The graphic novel adaptation of Clean Sweep, book 1 of the Innkeeper Chronicles by #1 New York Times bestselling authors Ilona Andrews. On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian bed and breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor. Her biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is ... Her broom is a deadly weapon, and her inn is magic. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina. And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night. ... Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive ex-military new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.
The love affair I had with Ilona Andrews is well and truly dead. DNR. Laid to rest.
I had hoped this graphic novel adaptation would restoke my love of their work, but it did the opposite and reaffirmed my lingering beliefs. Plus I was also annoyed that the thinly plotted Clean Sweep was split into two graphic novels, which is...obnoxious.
Anywho, not for me. I'm tapping out.
The illustrations are nice, minus how dirty they did Officer Marius. The one Black character and the coloring looks like that? As the kids say, bomBASTic side-eye.
As an Innkeeper Chronicles fan, I couldn't not read the Graphic Novel version. Clean Sweep has been formatted into two volumes so I read this first volume.
Oh the fun of seeing all our favorite Innkeeper characters in well drawn artwork and the sassy dialogue and thought balloons. I enjoy that there are some subtle difference in the storyline from the original. The crackling energy between Dina and Sean is great. The action scenes make you feel the energy and pace step up just viewing the artwork and quick read dialogue boxes.
I am in a fever to get my hands on the second volume and recommend this edition to fellow fans.
I found the changes between this and the original text really interesting--not just the subbing out brand names but introducing a fake dating ish plot line. The art is also fascinating to me, not entirely my favorite style, but it is impossible for me to not have a good time in this world.
This was everything I wanted from this graphic novel. As a huge fan of the books I had high expectations coming into it but I loved it so much. Dina and Sean are perfect, Soren and his facial hair aren't my favourite and I'm undecided on Arland's appearance. But all the little story details are amazing. Loved the coffee scene, so funny. And all the banter, particularly between Sean and Dina comes across so well. Love it. Cannot wait for the next volume.
Since I love the Innkeeper Chronicles (5 stars all around), my 4.5 star rating for this is just based on how it’s been translated into a graphic novel. It was a little wordy but overall, I think it was well done!
Loved this adaptation! I really enjoyed seeing this story this way, while also hearing all the voices from the GraphicAudio editions in my head. 🤭 The expansion of some scenes is nicely done! I also loved the art style overall, especially the occasional chibi panel (angry chibi Dina is so funny 😂). The only drawback I found to it though was that everyone looks the same age! Even when a character is supposed to be in their 50s/60s, they basically look the same age as Dina and Sean. I also thought Dina's thought bubbles were a bit clunky in terms of providing information and I think if I wasn't so familiar with the story already, I might have found those a bit awkward to read.
Still it's it as bad as the graphic novels that are published in 6-12 parts so there is another book to come. It's quite an accurate rendition of the story except they have made Dina very immature and juvenile, same with Sean. Thickness over most when the two are interacting with each other and is even shown in the hardworking the drawings going very childish. Not a fan myself but some I'll like it I'm sure. Hope we don't have to wait too long for book two........
I loved the novels, and this was the perfect comfort adaption/reread. The innkeeper chronicles are literally one of my favorite series of all time, and I can’t get enough. We’ve got laughs, romance, and the number one book world I’d want to live in. Recommended to everyone with a pulse because I love them that much.
Love triangle: Check Vampires: Check Werewolves: Check Werecats: Check Snarky remarks: Check Headstrong female lead: Check Dripping Sarcasm: Check Did it make me smile: Check Did it make me blush: Check Did it make me want more: Check Witty references to other books or series: Check, check and double check!!!
Man I loved this. It made me even think about picking up the real books but then I saw the covers and I just noped out. I'll wait for them to make a manga adaption of the second book. Because wow. I mean really, we had a good thing going here and then both of them left. Like seriously?! And I feel like her "permanent" guest has a past that might be coming back for her. Also I know this isn't over yet!!!! And I loved the fact that so many reference where made to certain books, movies and series, one of my best friends series got dragged trough the mud and I loved it, marveled at it and truly enjoyed it. I think that sometimes reading a graphic novel or manga makes it easier to read but I often miss how you can read between the lines. Didn't miss that here. Of course I can't compare it to the book since I haven't read that. But still. Loved it!
As an Innkeeper Chronicles and Andrews fan, I couldn't not read the Graphic Novel version. The first novel in the series is Clean Sweep and it has been formatted into two volumes, so I’ve read this first volume and am not so patiently waiting on volume two.
Such fun to see all my/our favorite Innkeeper characters in well drawn artwork with the sassy dialogue and thought balloons. If you’ve read or listened to the books then you might notice there are some subtle differences in the storyline from the original. The action scenes make you feel the energy. And, Sean and Dina’s relationship is popping with energy. You can feel the blooming romance. The artwork is artistically beautiful and engaging!
If you haven’t dived into the Innkeeper Chronicles then I highly recommend you do. The novels are a delight to read or listen to. As for the GN I enjoyed the artwork and seeing this adaptation. As a fan this was a treat!
First impressions: I just got the paperback in the mail and the artwork is beautiful! I finished it in one sitting and what a fantastic adaptation!
I hope they do the entire series.
My daughter took it from me to read now lol I’ll report back when she finishes it too lol
***** Full review: This is a book I pre-ordered the second I heard about it. I love the Innkeeper series so much, and I was beyond excited to dive into the graphic novel, even though I don’t usually read graphic novels.
First thing I want to talk about is the art. It’s beautiful. It’s perfect, the stylistic choices, the changes in the panels from anime to chibi art (reference is my daughter who is an artist) for emphasis, or for humor. It’s an amazing use of stylistic choice. For someone who isn’t a graphic novel or manga reader, I really enjoyed the art. While I can appreciate some of the mangas out there, I really don’t love some of the styles. I feel like the way this book was adapted allows for people who love graphic novels, and people who are new to the genre to both be happy with the art.
This story begins with Dina, an Innkeeper (she runs an intergalactic bed and breakfast, so to speak), noticing that there have been a lot of dog killings in her neighborhood recently, and she’s beginning to think something is hunting in the area. Something not of the earth. Her newest neighbor Sean Evans is an alpha strain werewolf, a bigger and badder version of werewolves, and she lets him know that something is killing in his territory. He calls her crazy, and she tells him that if he isn’t going to take care of it, she will. Enter lots of flirting, learning that there is more to the world than meets the eye, and that there’s a big giant universe out there. It’s amazing.
The next thing I want to talk about is more of how this book makes me feel. It leaves me feeling as if I don’t want to leave the world. I would up re-reading the entire Innkeeper Chronicles series because I just didn’t want to leave the Innkeeper world.
And then, something amazing happened in my household. My 10 year old saw the book and took it. She read this graphic novel cover-to-cover. Luckily the graphic novel isn’t inappropriate in any way (there are like 3 swear words, and maybe one joke that went over her head). And when she was done, my teenagers each took turns with it. My 19 year old has it at the moment and won’t give it back. I fully expect Lord Arland fan art by the end of this.
The main thing I do want to emphasize is that things have been changed slightly to make the graphic novel smoother, and the ending really is a cliffhanger. Which if you’ve read the novel Clean Sweep, you know what you’re getting into. That being said, the graphic novel ends at about where the halfway point would be in the novel. And it works. I wasn’t frustrated or upset. It really was a good spot to end the story. And I eagerly await the next installment of the graphic novel, because it is just the coolest thing ever,
It's been 10 or more years ago when I read Clean Sweep for the first time so I don't know if the graphic novel version is true to its original version. Since I know that with different media, there's will be change here and there. Reading this graphic novel make me want to do a re-read to compare the story.
Art wise, the art is not my favorite although the lineart is clean and defined. Plus point, the illustrator, Shinju Ageha is an Indonesian like me! I like that many Indonesian illustrator know work for webtoon, and I'm glad that Shinju Ageha got chosen to bring Clean Sweep characters and story into webtoon format. I don't remember much the novel version, but this webtoon version is pretty much humorous with some of tongue in check dialogue. The book also just covered episode 1 to 25 that published online first in Tapas. I hope volume 2 will be published too in 2024 so I can read book vol 1 and vol 2 back to back.
A nice addition for Ilona Andrews fans and also nice introduction to new reader to the world of the Innkeeper Chronicles
This volume also felt slow. It took a long time to get rolling. I think part of it was due to laying the groundwork while other parts of it felt like it could have been due to it taking longer to get all the information I needed for the world.
The art for this wasn't my favorite. It wasn't bad, but the anime style feel to it didn't feel right. With the monsters and magical aspects, I think something that would have made it a little more different would have helped.
There were also a lot of internal dialogue that I struggled with from time to time as it felt like it the inner and outer dialogue could be repetitive.
Overall, it wasn't bad but not something I'm sure I want to continue or see how I feel about the novel.
FYI, this is about 75 percent of the original story and stops a little into Chapter 12 (pg. 157), which on Tapas is at chapter 25.
As a fan of the Innkeeper Chronicles I was excited to get a graphic novel version of the story. I really enjoyed seeing this story brought to life in graphic format. I also think they did a great job at adapting the novel into the graphic novel without losing any context of what is happening. I did think this was the full novel in graphic format, but I think they chose a good spot to stop for volume one. Now I just wish volume two was out so I could continue this version of the story.
A very good adaptation that's true to the original written work. I waited until this was in physical form before reading it and it's a treat that everything is in color. The banter works really well in graphic novel format (even more amusing actually) and even though I knew this story I still got sucked in and enjoyed myself. This is such a fun series! Would love it if it continues.
I liked a lot about the graphic novel. The story translated and the art color panel was pleasant. I did not like that the Dina and Sean were shown as bobbleheads. Otherwise, the fiction book translated nicely.
4.5 stars. This was such a delightful surprise. I’d never heard of this series before. I was at the library and I went to the adult graphic novel section to grab a different book for a reading challenge with the prompt “read a graphic novel or comic book romance.” The spine of this book caught my attention. I was debating grabbing this one for the reading challenge, but I couldn't tell if there was romance in it or not, so I decided to stick with that other book, but I decided to also check this one out anyway and I'm so glad I did. I LOVED this. I loved the art in this. I loved that it was so colorful and I just found it very visually appealing. I think I'm really going to love the romance between Dina and Sean. I can't say for sure, because we haven’t really gotten much yet. I kept hoping something was going to happen, but nothing did. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love what we have gotten so far, but like just kiss already damn it! We may not have gotten to the actual romance just yet, but I loved the sparky moments that we did get. I also don’t love how much of a jerk Sean was at first. But I loved the little moment they had in the woods when Sean was shirtless and all concerned about Dina and when Dina was in trouble after the attack at the supermarket and she called Sean for help. I’m all here for a love triangle – I think that’s the direction this is headed. I think that will keep the romance from getting stale in what I think is a pretty long series. But I am firmly Team Sean all the way. I definitely want more of this world, but I haven't decided yet how I'm going to go about it, because there are too many options. Should I go back and start at the beginning with the original novels and then continue on from there? Should I read the next graphic novel since there’s only one more that’s currently out and then continue on with the original novels from book 3 forward? Should I just stick with the graphic novels and read them as they come out? I just don’t know. But I will definitely be continuing on with this series in some way. I enjoyed this so much.

I really love the Innkeeper Chronicles, and it’s nice to see them in a new medium. I read a lots of comics these days, so this was right up my alley.
That being said, I was a little bit disappointed in this adaptation. Not just that the characters did not appear the way I expected (Lord Soren, the stalkers, and Dahaka really threw me off), but the overall feel of the series was different. Dina is far more bad ass and competent in the books than she seemed here. There’s a lot of tweaking that has to be done when you adapt into a graphic format, so I shouldn’t be surprised that everything was a little more simplified, but the story is much less compelling without more background. IMO this is good for previous readers of the books, but only average for a new reader.
Costco was replaced by Kirara, which made less sense to me since they’re in rural Texas, but whatever. I noticed a few inconsistencies, but I can overlook those. Something that hadn’t occurred to me reading the books is that technically they shouldn’t have had to have a barbecue to cover up the smell of boiling the body. Dina has nearly absolute control over the grounds, and can bend physics to suit herself. She should have been capable of containing the site and smell of anything on her property. But oh well it was a necessary plot point.

I already read The Innkeeper Chronicles previously and love that series, so I was interested to see it in graphic novel from. The art style isn't my favorite; it skews a little too cutesy and the dark panels were too dark. I thought Morais was just a shadow when he first appeared. Gertrude Hunt wasn't quite the way I pictured it and felt too suburban and close to the road. While I don't love the art style, I do love seeing a series from my favorite authors come to life visually so I'll definitely pick up the next volume eventually. I'm super interested to see if the next novel gets adapted as well and we start to see some more of the aliens. Give me Orro and the Chickens!!
The Innkeeper Chronicles: Clean Sweep The Graphic Novel by Ilona Andrews (Author), Shinju Ageha (Illustrator) – If there was one book that I can’t seem to stop buying different editions of for the experience, its this one. I have read the standard ebook, the physical book, the normal audiobook, the dramatic audiobook, and now ladies and gentleman I present you: the graphic novel! I loved it in this iteration too! If you like books that ride the edge of urban fantasy and sci-fi, this is right in that niche! Happy Reading!
I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel. The characters have depth and personality and the world building is done well in this format. I enjoyed the various mythical beings and an explanation of the complex magic systems. I’m eager to continue reading to see what happens next.
** For those who read reviews please note that I do not typically give a graphic novel higher than ⭐️⭐️⭐️. I tend to save higher ratings for books. This doesn’t mean a graphic novel / comic isn’t good. It’s just my style of reviewing**
