Some secrets are best left in the dark, in a place where hearts exist bound by barbed wire.
Seth loudly resents the concept of biology choosing one’s mate. Determined never to fall for the “fated Korrena” trap, he picks fights and carelessly sleeps around to hide from the he’s secretly in love with his best friend’s little sister. But Riley believes so firmly in the poetic nonsense of Korrena pairs that she has “saved herself” for her future pair. When her prince shows up, it will break his heart to lose her—so he’ll take her in whatever way he can have her.
Riley has always relied on Seth to keep her on task and look out for her. He makes her feel safe. But a shift in his attitude lately has her off-balance. There’s that new scent he wears that no one notices but her, and the subtext in his teasing, especially when they’re alone. What she wouldn’t give for Seth to be her Korrena… but he doesn’t believe in that, so she hides her feelings. She’ll take him in whatever way she can have him.
She wishes he wouldn’t see her as a child. He hasn’t seen his “Firecracker” as a child in a long time. The slow drag of Seth’s tongue over the cut on her finger obliterated thought. Seth-freaking-Emerson, her childhood friend who had always been like a big brother to her, was tasting her blood…
Book four of the Blackthorn Saga featuring two side characters as the main characters. While it's best to read the previous books, there's enough information it can be read as a standalone for newcomers to the series. Ruinous Secrets is a full-length (132k words) new adult paranormal romance by author Stephanie Denne. The dark and mysterious world of the Blackthorn Saga is a new take on vampire romance in an academy setting complete with a king and his court, fated mates, magic, and more! Blackthorn Saga takes a new approach to the fated mates trope and the toxicity around the jealousy and possessive behaviors that can come from it, allowing the characters to evolve and grow across multiple books to find themselves and find a true, organic love without just bending to "destiny."

I have been trying to leave a 5 star rating for this book since December but Goodreads doesn't like my account for some reason so despite not being able to leave my stars that will not stop me from giving Stephanie her flowers as they are much deserved!!
With that said, RUINOUS SECRETS IS A 5-STAR READ!
As I am now properly addicted to the Blacktorn Saga (who am I kidding? I've been addicted since book 1) and this is the 2nd time Stephanie has so graciously allowed me to read an ARC, I will be breaking down all of the things I loved about Ruinous Secrets below because everyone needs to know how amazing this series and Stephanie is-
. Right off the bat the first thing I noticed that was a great improvement in this book over the previous books was that Stephanie was incredibly concise with what she decided to mention in the book. She would jump to new scenes in lieu to dragging unnecessary details out. It felt refreshing and like we got more story because of it
. The character development was seamless and well thought out despite the MMC being a very very minor character in the previous books. I was instantly hooked and in love with the new details Seth brought to the table
. Normally I DESPISE the friends to lovers trope but this time it was so FRESH & DELICIOUS!! They way Stephanie formulated this story and developed the romantic plot was so original to me. The girl cooked. You won't find anything like this anywhere!
. LET'S TALK RECAPPING!!! As Ruinous Secrets can be read as a stand alone (don't do that. Read the entire series. You'll be addicted. TRUST ME) Stephanie did a great job quickly recapping books 1-3. It wasn't something that dragged on. It never felt boring or like it was not enough information but at the same time it left a little air of mystery so that if you haven't read books 1-3 it entices you to go back to the beginning (which you should if you haven't read them but you should really do yourself a favor and just read them. If you're reading this review because you're wondering where to start, don't ignore me. Exit here and start at book 1. I know what I'm telling you)
. GROWTH!!! What more can I say? The growth as a writer from book 1 to book 4 is unreal! Each book keeps getting better and better. I really can't believe Stephanie started this series a year ago. I really hope she's proud of the author she has become. I have honestly enjoyed experiencing her journey and despite me not knowing her irl I feel extremely proud. GO STEPH! YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR!
To finish up this lengthy review let's discuss the characters a little bit-
Our queen Riley being on the spectrum was incredible! I felt like my best friends were represented in such a beautiful and heartwarming way. Riley's thought process, behaviors, and how Seth treated her felt so real and endeared me to her even more.
Seth Emerson.. where do I start? sometimes baby girl is an ex-slutty, secret Dom that wants to teach you how to achieve the big O while getting nothing in return but to see your unadulterated pleasure
This man is a dream come true and I never knew I could have these kinds of dreams (you know which kind)
And finally if all of the above doesn't convince you to read one of the BEST romance books you will read this year please see the below abbreviated SPICY SCENE-
when she asks for it harder and gets it but immediately says, "It's too much... I can't..." so he says, "You can, and you will. You asked for this. I can feel you. You're burning up for this. For me. Isn't this what you wanted?" the words rough and strained between thrusts
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ♾️ I loved all the books so far, but this one was definitely my favorite. I saw myself in Riley so much and I just loved this addition to the story of the blackthorn saga so much
If you know me, you know I don’t typically read childhood friends to lovers, it honestly just has never been my thing. But Stephanie had me wrapped around her finger with this trope. I loved it, I devoured it and kept wanting more. Our book deals with side characters from the previous books Seth and Riley but can be read as a standalone which is amazing! Seth hates the idea of choosing a mate, whereas Riley wants nothing more than to have her ‘ Korrena’. Seth and Riley were the perfect definition of pining for one other and I loved every second of it. Seth had me giggling and kicking my feet in the air like a schoolgirl whose crush finally acknowledged her and he needs to be protected at all costs. Riley reminded me of myself with her ADHD moments, and I really resonated with her character, protect her at all costs also please she's adorable. I loved the worldbuilding, even though this was my introduction to the Blackthorn Saga I loved every part of it and felt like there was enough for me to have an understanding. And Stephanie's take on vampires was wonderful :) I’m excited to read the first 3 books to gain even more of an understanding of this delightful world. First of all I did not read the first 3 books but it was pretty easy to catch on so loved that for me! This new idea/type of vampire is so refreshing, I love vampires but every now and thn I do love a new idea vampire. This book was a rollercoaster for me because at one point I was squealing like a little girl with my feet kicking in the air than the next moment I was crying into my pillow yelling at my phone, cursing Stephanie like ma’am you say sike rn you did not just do that to me?!?! I love the ending and can’t wait for the next book especially because a new group member is supposed to drop like yessss tell me who it is RIGHT NOW 👀

“loving someone and having them, and loving someone and not having them, were two different things.”
when i started the book, i was worried that since firstly, i didn’t read the first 3 books from the series that i would not be able to grasp the storyline despite it being marketed as a standalone. if anything, finishing this book made me realise that i NEED AND WANT to read the first 3 books in the series.
riley’s little moments reflect to me as someone with adhd and seeing it in words, validated even as fictional plot warmed my heart. and seth, ah where can i start about seth other than i wanna kiss his forehead for his patience and gentleness and his littlest thing he caught even without words spoken than made his relationship with her more sweeter. even sweeter than warm vanilla cookies, winks.
the writing, storyline and world building and lores aren’t complicated for someone who had not yet read the rest of the series and definitely was easy to go through and understand. if you are a fan of fantasy and fated mate + childhood friend to lover, this is a go to. i most certainly am will be getting the other three, it was definitely a sweet push to get me reading outside of my comfort genres and tropes.
the preorder is now live here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C... which is currently at a discounted rate between now and release date of january 25th 2024.
the writer had allowed me advance access this book for review consideration but all opinions are my own and i appreciate it ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡
I’ve been waiting for this book since I read the first in the series, as much as I love all the characters I just fell in love with Riley and I’ve been hoping she’d get her own book, I was so excited when Stephanie revealed at the end of the last book that I was getting what I hoped for ! What can I say, I was not disappointed at all, it was everything I hoped for and more, no spoilers here but I got everything I wanted, I’m so ecstatic, this is such a fantastic book, a great addition to the series abd im looking forward to more in the future I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. i absolutely DEVOURED it in less than 24 hours. it was THAT good.
i related to riley's struggles in such a deep level. it was so comforting to feel so seen and understood. to have a representation so accurate in a fantasy book of what it is like to live with adhd is so important and riley's story will always have a special place in my heart.
and seth... he's literally the guy every girl with adhd dreams of (at least for me). he's so understanding and supportive and just PERFECT in every way. i love him so much omg 😭😭 he's set the bar SO HIGH for me. i will never settle for less.
thank you thank you THANK YOU SO MUCH STEPHANIE for this amazing book. i truly can't find the right words to express how much this story meant to me.
and also: the plot, the characters and their development, the world building, the storylines, the writing, the plot twists... fucking WELL DONE 👏🏻
This is my favorite book out of the series so far! I think a lot of my love comes from how relatable I found Riley to be. I identified a lot with how she was feeling, her inner thoughts and reactions to what is happening in the book. All I wanted was for her to be happy and you can see how Seth helps with that from the first chapter. The plot of this book is a lot of waiting around and then one very action packed part but I didn’t think that it made the book slow. I think that has to do with how the world is already established and the overall story the series is telling has already been explained so this book felt more like a full on romance novel over any fantasy storyline that the series has. That being said you do see some more of the world building and I cannot wait for the next book to see what will happen with bringing magic back and how that will be explored.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
➡️ Childhood friends to lovers ➡️ Fated mates ➡️ Paranormal Romance ➡️ ‘Touch her and die’
‘Riley has looked at you, like you alone hang the moon and stars since you were kids man, how do you not see that?’ 🌙 ✨
Thanks to Stephanie for the arc of her newest book. I fell in love with her writing on her first 3 Blackthorn saga books. She writes her characters so well. There’s no ‘insta love’ each pairing has a believable build into what eventually becomes their relationship.
The world building is not over-complex or hard to follow. A fresh take on the vampire trope.
An easy read with just a little spice that had me engrossed from start to finish.
I hope to see more of Stephanie’s writing and I’m excited for what’s next.
Obsessed. This new take on "vampires" had me racing for the opportunity to ARC read this one.
Riley is anxious, scatter-brained and constantly second guessing herself. Her ADHD comes through on multiple occasions, and as someone also dealing with that, it was an excellent representation.
Seth makes you want to reach through the screen and shake him. He spends so much time trying to screw his way through Riley's opposites that he misses what is truly right in front of them.
Their love is something they fight HARD to get to, with both of them getting in their own way most of the time.
Also, that secret - swoon.
I eagerly await the next installment and continuation of this story. Dominic interests me and I am intrigued to see how it all plays out.

I almost didn’t finish the first book of the series. I thought Blaire was too whiny. But I pushed through and I’m so glad I did!! My coworker went to high school with the author and recommended the book/series. She hadn’t read them, and I did tell her the first book was difficult for me to get through. But by the end of it I was hooked. I’ve finished the series and love these books! I’ve recommended them to so many people. I love the character development and story line. Very unique and intriguing. Stephanie-please keep writing!! More with this story line and whatever other brilliant ideas you have!!
I’m not joking when I say this book absolutely destroyed me in the best ways possible. I don’t even have words to describe how much I loved this book and I am so sad it’s over. Riley and Seth’s relationship from the beginning and even in the first three books was something I enjoyed. The banter, the smart remarks to each other but the care and love they had for each other? MY GOD. 10/10 will forever recommend this series to everyone! (Plus Seth saying “good girl” 🫠)
I spent most of this book kicking my feet and giggling. Crying a little, being slightly angry were also other reactions to this book. I honestly don't know how Stephanie does it but these books just keep getting better and better!
so i was originally kinda annoyed to get thrown into two new povs in the middle of the series. well, this is now my favorite book in the series! the couple was phenomenal and the fmc was just so lovable
I’m so glad I can across this series! Love the characters, Riley and Seth are my faves! Honestly this book made me laugh, cry, and I can’t wait to read on!
4.5 stars! Not gonna lie, I was really looking forward to Seth and Riley’s story. And it most definitely did NOT disappoint.
For the first three books we’ve seen glimpses of a very intriguing relationship between these two. A lot of banter and back and forth between them, and I think it was pretty clear that Riley most definitely was crushing on Seth, and then there were hints that he was watching her more closely as well. But it was also clear that anything between them would more than likely be complicated, and most definitely full of delicious angst.
One one hand, Riley is this badass little spitfire, more than able to hold her own, but still young, and considered the ‘little sister’ of the group, often to her great frustration. Pining away for Seth, she also is one of the best friends to Blaire, while being a supportive sister to the often frustrating Aiden. And when things start to heat up with Seth, Riley finds herself with warring emotions, elation and confusion, because boy of boy does he not make things easy or clear for her.
Seth has never truly been fully on board with finding his Korrena, or mated pair. He thinks Riley’s obsession with it is ridiculous, but he also cares about her and supports her. But Seth, oh he has some secrets, and one of those secrets could seriously rock Riley’s world. Too bad it doesn’t go quite as planned.
This story takes an interesting journey, the characters weaving their ways in and out of each other’s orbits. As I mentioned, the angst is high, the tension, palpable. Riley also deals with ADHD on a pretty deep level, though it’s never quite addressed as such, it definitely presents that way. The way Seth sees her, the way he supports her, is so fantastic, but he also finds a way to break her heart, and that is heartbreaking as a reader. Their back and forth, the chemistry and the heat, is most definitely a ride. Their path to each other is fraught with self doubt and so many obstacles, and I very much enjoyed watching them truly find each other the way they did.
This book most definitely is able to stand on it’s own from the first three books of the series, but I do highly recommend reading from book one. Not only is this a fantastic series, but for this story in particular, I think the build up that is laid down throughout the rest of the books just adds to the satisfaction you get when they finally find their well deserved HEA.
This story can be read on its own, but to know all the characters, it's good to read the first 3 books of the series. I loved Ruinous Secrets with Riley and Seth. My heart broke then healed then broke then I was in a chokehold... I wish I lived in this book. The end had me crying so much and clutching my heart.
If i could, I'd give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ruinous Secrets has my ❤️
I went into Ruinous Secrets expecting a dark fantasy romance with a childhood friends to lovers trope with some slow-burn tension, and instead, I got a gut-punch of emotion and characters who do not leave your head, even after the final page.
Denne has a way of weaving aching vulnerability into her worldbuilding without ever letting go of the danger and grit that makes dark fantasy so addicting. The plot moves fast, the stakes are always rising, and yet somehow the most devastating moments are the quiet ones. The glances, the silences, the choices not made. It’s not just about what Seth and Riley do, it’s about what they feel but can’t say.
Riley, the fmc, is strong in a way that’s uniquely her. She’s misunderstood, smart, soft where it counts, and relentless when she needs to be. Seth? Ruined. Powerful. Calculated. Yearning. Their chemistry is electric, but what hit me hardest was the emotional tension. The restraint, the longing, the trust that has to be earned drop by drop.
Now let’s talk spice. It’s there. It’s earned. And it simmers. Denne doesn’t throw it in for shock value. Every intimate moment feels raw and earned, a culmination of emotional risk and high stakes. My favorite moment was when they were sealing the bond and Seth was keeping Riley out of her head, making sure she was there with him the whole time. He loves that girl so deeply, and you can feel it in every single moment between them.
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5
I would give anything to read it again for the first time. If you’re into: 🖤 Childhood friends to lovers 🗝️ Fated mates 🌤️ Grumpy x sunshine 🔥 Tension that turns into heat 💔 Emotional damage (but the good kind) 🗡️ High-stakes fantasy Then Ruinous Secrets needs to be on your shelf.
I normally shy away from series books where one should probably read the prior books to understand or care. The blurb on this intrigued me enough to check out the prior books. I kept delaying because those didn't interest me, and I've been burned by entering in the middle of the series before.
The writer's new take on the vampire lore is a very interesting twist with fated mates. Riley and Seth stayed with me, so I took a chance. I'm glad I did. There is something about the two independent, strong willed yet vulnerable characters that draws the reader in. The author did a wonderful job of world building and retelling important information that you didn't miss not reading the other books & the reader knew what was happening. The only thing really, I felt I was missing was the story between the two prior characters, but we got a cliff notes version that satisfied the need to know. Riley is younger than Seth but has always felt tied to him. He felt the pull earlier than most and probably because they were so close growing up. The reader does want to shake Seth who because he doesn't receive acknowledgement right away, decides to ignore it. Everyone else can clearly see it but these two miss the signs. The story between the two unfolds beautifully with angst, humor, 'I told you", 'Are you really that oblivious', jealousy, protectiveness, love, and a feeling of finally it's right with the world.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is my favorite romance story in the series. I really like Riley and see a lot of myself in her. I also really like Seth. I really like friends to lovers (especially childhood friends) and idiots in love as tropes so this was fantastic. I wanted to throttle them (lovingly). There is one thing that gave me an ick and I'm hoping I'm just misinterpreting it but SPOILERS Anyway, Seth can be my book boyfriend 100%
I was honestly hesitant when I started this book because it wasn’t about the main couple from the other books but I can understand why the author chose to focus on another couple. The first couple was settled and it would have been dragging out their relationship to continue the plot of the story from their perspective so I do kinda like how she’s continued the series with another couple so we can find out more about the plot and unravel it as we read.
It’s something new that I haven’t seen before. All other books are focused on the romance of one couple and one problem and once that problem is solved or prophecy is fixed or curse is broken, the couple lives happily every after. But with this series, the initial couple is happy and solid in their relationship whilst the main plot is still unsolved and continuing so it does make sense for the series to continue with other couples.
I did however hate the back and forth of both the MMC and FMC saying the other didn’t love them. This was one huge miscommunication trope which I absolutely hate but I do love the banter between them.
I was absolutely enamored with it—each page was a delight, and I found myself yearning for more. Although this marked my initiation into the Blackthorn Saga, I was captivated by the intricacies of the worldbuilding. Stephanie's fresh perspective on vampires brought a delightful dimension to the story. Even as a newcomer, I felt that the narrative provided sufficient depth for me to comprehend the intricacies of the world.
I'm genuinely excited about delving into the first three books to uncover more about this captivating world. The writing, storyline, and worldbuilding, including the intricate lore, proved to be remarkably accessible for someone unfamiliar with the series. Navigating through the narrative was a breeze, making the entire experience not only enjoyable but also encouraging my eagerness to explore more of this enchanting series.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
