Apes alive! When Solovar, leader of Gorilla City, is apparently assassinated by pro-human extremists, Gorilla City's new government declares war on humanity. Part of their plot involves turning the JLA into human-hating gorillas to help carry out their bidding. Now it's up to Batman (the only member who wasn't transformed, of course) and Martian Manhunter to find a cure for their banana-loving buddies and prevent all-out gorilla warfare from encompassing every civilization from Atlantis to Themyscira.
JLApe: The Complete Collection reprints the entire crossover from Legends of the DC Universe #19, JLA Annual #3, Batman Annual #23, Aquaman Annual #5, Wonder Woman Annual #8, The Flash Annual #12, Superman Annual #11, Green Lantern Annual #8, and Martian Manhunter Annual #2.
More of a 3.5, but I recognize that that's because of nostalgia. When these comics first came out, I actually didn't regularly read DC comics yet. This was just at the start of my foray into reading DC at all. And, admittedly, the Grant Morrison run of JLA from the late 90s to early 2000s will always remain "my" JLA.
I miss Kyle Rayner and his regular banter with the other core seven so much.
This actual plot is nothing amazing. And the constant ape puns, and quotes and movie references, are a little on the nose. Still, it was nice to finally go back and read an "event" that I had read the first issue of back in the 90s, and then never actually got around to finishing before.
You know the story must be terrible overall if I'm giving it 2 stars even though it prominently features a fight between Superman and a giant, magic-fueled robotic gorilla mech piloted by the heir to Gorilla City.
