An Exciting Time Travel Adventure

I have really enjoyed reading this time travel series. The writing is very good. The characters are diverse and memorable. The plots are intriguing and full of action. I hope to read more in the future. Or maybe in the past.

Still waiting for the meat of the time travel

I’m writing this review on the last (at least currently) of the Yestertime series so as not to include any forward looking spoilers. I gave the earlier books 4’s because they were interesting and I thought that they were building up to a greater explanation of what some of the details were about time travel. But, there was nothing more to come. The books are fairly interchangeable, and you don’t even have to worry about events happening out of order (a nice benefit of the topic). But, I was left at the end of this book no more enlightened than I was at the end of the first one. There are also several logical holes, the most obvious of which was when the resort portal was covered up by demolition, why didn’t the waste material just keep flowing through the portal? It was still open. Maybe it would have eventually piled up enough to counter the force created by the weight of material falling through, but not before the demolition crew noticed something pretty strange. Another was when the rope to one of the characters was cut by the portal. When did that become a thing and what is the timing? Many other similar logical bits of static occur through the series. Lots of people die, which is not a particular problem for me in fiction, but when they arbitrarily die for no obvious reason, and at the rate that they do in the series, it makes it difficult to have any investment in them. When the old lady was killed, I was at the point of “Well, there goes another one…”. Overall, the stories were interesting enough, but there was little to no advancement of the framework. Still entertaining, but knowing what I know at this point, I probably would not have invested the amount of time necessary to get so little real sense of what is going on. I should note that I really do not like any media that leaves things as “an exercise for the viewer”. If I wanted that kind of exercise, I’d write my own material. I want things to make sense and be consistent. I’m OK with progressive disclosure, but there has to be at least SOME explanation. Last note, why was there “one Portal Finder to rule them all”, and how would that even work retroactively? That made no sense at all given what has been disclosed to this point. Very unsatisfying from a “how does this all fit together” viewpoint.

I read the first three books, which I enjoyed, in this series of four a few years ago and never realised there was a book four. The third, if I recall, ended on a satisfactory enough note that I didn't feel the need for another to finish the story, but had to read this when I realised. It only took a few minutes to remember the characters and what had happened to them. This isn't an overly fantastic time travel story - if one can suspend belief and imagine that in the future it could be possible, then the premise isn't hard to accept. I like Andrew Cunningham's work and I did find the premise of how time travel came about, the characters and their stories and mishaps - and, as with some, happy outcomes, really believable and, as usual with this author, well thought out and written. It is necessary to read books 1-3 in order to know who the characters are and what happened to them. It all started with a man sheltering from the rain in a cave... I recommend the voyage through these books for a good read about time travel and how a group of ordinary people deal with it.

I really enjoyed the first three "Yestertime" books, which seemed to conclude as a trilogy. Now, here is a fourth book, obviously retconning the "Yestertime" plotline to avoid the solid conclusion offered in the third book. This book is easily as interesting and exciting as the earlier books. Existing characters are joined by new characters in an entertaining mix. A few new twists spice up the narrative. My only real issue here is the one that I have with numerous other time travel stories. That is, without a firm set of "rules", restrictions or limits to time travel, the stories can go anywhere and anytime in chaotic, mind-twisting ways. The very restricted structure in the first book keeps getting "looser" in the subsequent books. Things like changes to things in the past not affecting current history, or the creation of alternate timelines, or more than one "version" of a person existing simultaneously allow for chaos and doubts about what is "real" or not.

Best in the series since the first one.

This novel, book four in the series, was for me the most enjoyable since the first. It is a bittersweet story, as most of the major characters survive and end up safe and reasonably content, but all experience some loss and sacrifice. The narrative jumps between threads, as small groups of travelers are separated from one another. The difficult form is handled deftly by the author. All of the characters are human, people the reader can care about. I suspect that this might be intended to end the series, and if so, it is well ended.

Tying up loose ends

Several new characters became couples, who ended up in different years due to portal malfunctions. Good effort by the author developed these characters quite fully, so that the resolution of their eventual fates proved satisfying to the reader. The author did not attempt to explain or resolve the many paradoxical issues associated with time travel, but the life stories of the various characters against the bizarre background of time travel worked quite well.

Yestertime Time Series Travel 4 Books

All four books are absolutely fascinating, albeit confusing where the actual time travel is concerned. Time travel as depicted in the books is not glamorous or easy to do. The characters involved in time travel are continually stressed regarding transportation, money, clothing, fitting in with the time, and safety. Are these four books worth reading? Definitely!! Just don't plan on getting anything else done until the last word of book four is read!!

adventurous

I loved this series! Full of adventure, just enough romance to be appropriate without going full on crazy on it. It was perfect. The adventures just kept coming. I read the entire series in less than a week (it took that long because I had life happening also). I loved the stories. All of the characters were fully developed, no one was given the short stick on development. Some stories I wasn’t ready to leave, but I get that it had to happen. The only thing I felt like didn’t get a conclusion was Cyndi.

Hopping about

This book should be a board game. The players could be dealt cards to use as they move about based on a roll of the dice. As they reach roadblocks, they must draw from center piles of cards first to find their fate and then judiciously select cards from their hand to move either backwards or forwards. Ultimately, the winner will be returned to the starting point and be declared a winner. BTW, foxholes are from WWII. It’s trenches in the first war. Work on your characterization; they’re flat.

This book started piteously slowly. I had read the previous three so I knew the characters and wanted to see what happened. So I plodded on. Luckily the story improved. The people who fell through the portal were eventually split up so the narrative divided into different stories with different outcomes. In the end I was pleased that I persisted. Usually you shouldn't have to 'persist' to enjoy a book so it must be clear that this isn't among my favorites but it's not bad.

3.5 Bringing closure

The author finished a very good, science based, time traveler series. There was repetition in each book, but the reminders were necessary to bring this story to a believable epilogue. I enjoyed the series and characters. The author made time travel stories about relationships. I would highly recommend this series to a wide audience. Resilience and adaptation are central to the success of this series.

Excellent series

I had not read a time travel book before, being a huge fan of psychological thriller 's. yestertime, book one, came up on my kindle, I am now hooked, have read them all, and enjoyed them, really good character 's that you care for. Fast pace, but easy to keep up. A couple of sad deaths, but that was how it was then. All the old character 's, plus some new ones.

Best rendition of the complications of time travel

I've read a lot about it and this illustrates the complications, the temporal perceptions involved by the actual time travelers. He examines some of the contradictions and cndomdrums crested. Also has a character ask not "where are you from"but " when are you from.". Captured the allure and sadness of time travel for me.

Hard to put this book down!

This was by far the easiest and most exciting and innovative of all the books in the series. We meet our old friends along with several new travelers. Each has a different and special story to tell and hopefully the series will continue with more adventures.

Brilliant Series of Fantastic Books

What a series of amazing books. I truly loved every single page. The series is so well written and even if you don't believe in time travel, this series will make you believe, as I do. I'm just so sorry I have just read the 4th, and last book, it makes me sad. Also the history connected to time travel is amazing; I love all Andrew Cunningham's books, what a beautiful mind. Thank You.

A great ending to a great series

I had enjoyed every book in this series and was not disappointed with this Book 4. I think there’s still a story in what happens to Nathanial and would love to see Mr. Cunningham write it. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good novel with a time travel premise.

Amazing series

I envy the writer's depth of research required to write these novels. I certainly hope they are novels. Seemed so real. Recommend whether your interest is history, relationships, mystery, or time travel. A must read for anyone curious about possibilities. I wonder which time Mr Cunningham is truly from....

nice wrap-up to the series

This was a good 4 volume story line. A unique take on time travel with lots of twists and turns to keep it interesting. This final Book in the series wraps it up nicely, closing out the story line for all the main characters. Thanks for an entertains read Mr. Cunningham!

Good clean story

As a lover of time travel yarns this one keeps your attention until the end. Back and forth in time not knowing if you are going to survive. Worthy of a movie I'd pay to see.

the last book is great

I really like the way Mr. Cunningham jumps back and forth explains and talking about each character! It makes me sad that this is the last book in the series! If you enjoy time travel stories, this is a great series. I suggest reading them in order!

Portals only going one way to a particular time is clever

I liked the jumps to different times within one book rather than all of it about one time. I can see some travelers opening their mouths and ending up in assilems.
