People often ask me that Ishan you are 31 and still fond of reading children books. Now who will tell them that I am born devouring Champak , Nandan and Comics and if someone throws light on my childhood, he will find a fun filled life with characters like Chacha Chaudhary, Billu , Pinki and cricketers . My train journeys and life use to revolve around these fictional tales which were as real for me as it can get.

Fast forward two decades , there is hardly any author who write stories that cater to children needs and rightly so , GenZ hardly reads and even if they do , they don't reflect much. So when I come across this book , couldn't stop myself from picking this up.

The book covers some of the most enthralling stories with an embedded message in most of them . Some tales like Masala Papad has a humorous touch to them while some others like A Pinch Of Salt has a deep hidden moral message. The author employs simple yet profound way of story telling and the language is beginner friendly. The adept use of vocabulary adds much more relevance to the overall complexion of the book.

In the age of gadgets and technological advancements when everyone is glued to their screen , such books come as a breath of fresh air which can actually revive the reading culture amongst the young generation. The illustrations in the book further makes it a fascinating journey. The cover page instantly draws you to the work and the interesting characters further helps you to stay glued .

All in all a pretty entertaining work .

Short stories are always a great option for breaking the flow of a continuous binge novel reading spree, and if the short stories are a quirky mix of fun and learning, then that’s a bonus for sure. This book is a collection of 25 such stories, ranging over a wide assortment of topics like moral values, folktales, imaginative narration, and many more.

The stories were a mix of hit and miss for me, with the majority of them being quite a hit. I loved the section that had stories about kings. The ones that were a miss are the ones I think could have been a bit more descriptive. I felt like the story ended too soon.

I loved the fact that all the stories have illustrations in them because illustrations always make the stories more interesting. If I had to choose my favorite story from the collection, it would definitely be Gulgul. I just loved that story so much!

If you are looking for something fun to read and love short stories, then you can surely go for this one.

In the vast expanse of children's literature in India, filled (and almost overcrowded) with titles of Ruskin Bond and Sudham Murthy, Ollie Grover's debut offering, "Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad, and More: Unusual Indian Tales for World Kids," emerges as a delightful breath of fresh air. With its eclectic mix of stories spanning various themes and genres, Grover's book adds a unique flavour to the literary landscape.

"Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad, and More" is divided into four distinct sections — namely, "Extraordinary Stories of Ordinary Humans," "Tales of Kings and Kingdoms," "Tales of Human Cleverness," and "Animal Fables" — each offering a diverse array of tales that captivate and enchant young readers.

In "Extraordinary Stories of Ordinary Humans," readers are treated to narratives that celebrate the human spirit and individual identity. Among these, "Dheema" stands out as a poignant reminder that even those deemed 'good-for-nothing' by societal standards can lead meaningful lives defined by their own virtues.

The second section, "Tales of Kings and Kingdoms," contains stories akin to the various mythological tales we are told as children, containing and imparting moral and social values. "How the Watermelon Got So Many Seeds" and "Old but Wise" are two of my personal favourites.

The section titled "Tales of Human Cleverness" contains a selection of stories that have more to do with wisdom than cleverness. But true to the section title, the said wisdom is placed cleverly in between the pages. Amidst these narratives, "The Pace of Progress" emerges as a gem, offering sage advice that transcends time: "If you go slow, you'll get there faster. If you hurry, you'll surely be delayed."

Finally, in "Animal Fables," readers are transported to a world where humanoid creatures and anthropomorphic entities navigate moral dilemmas and life lessons reminiscent of the Panchatantra tales. Through these stories, Grover skilfully weaves together themes of empathy, resilience, and friendship, leaving a lasting impression on young minds.

One of the highlights of Grover's debut title is his versatility as both a storyteller and an illustrator. The illustrations that accompany each tale breathe life into the narrative, offering young readers a visual feast to complement the richness of the stories. However, while the illustrations serve as a delightful addition to the book, the style could benefit from a touch of refinement. At times, the artwork feels somewhat generic and reminiscent of school textbooks.

While "Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad, and More" offers readers a commendable variety of stories, there is room for improvement in the book's structure. Presenting multiple anthologies, each with a singular theme might offer a more cohesive reading experience, avoiding the impression that the book serves merely as a portfolio for a pitch.

Ollie Grover's debut title is, all in all, quite a delightful addition to the realm of children's literature in India. With its engaging storytelling, vibrant illustrations, and diverse themes, "Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad, and More" promises to captivate young readers and ignite their imagination. While there are areas for improvement, Grover successfully showcases his talent as a storyteller and sets the stage for future literary endeavours in the realm of children's fiction.

Each story is skillfully categorized, fitting seamlessly into sections such as "Extraordinary Tales of Ordinary Humans," "Tales of Kings and Kingdoms," "Tales of Human Cleverness," and "Animal Fables."

Grover’s writing style is a delightful blend of simplicity and depth. With an engaging narrative voice, each tale unfolds seamlessly, capturing the essence of moral values while maintaining a light, enjoyable tone. The transition within stories is smooth, enhancing the reading experience. Grover’s adept use of vocabulary adds richness to the narratives, ensuring both entertainment and enlightenment.

The cover and title perfectly encapsulate the whimsy and intrigue within. The vibrant cover art alludes to the diverse adventures awaiting within the pages. The title, while playful, hints at the eclectic mix of stories, enticing readers to dive into this literary treasure trove.

What makes "Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad and More" a recommended read is its ability to tackle significant topics and historical facts with a light touch. Grover masterfully integrates important themes into each story, fostering thought and reflection without overwhelming the reader. While stories like “Wooden Box” and “Masala Papad” infuse humor, stories like “Respect” and “A Pinch of Salt” deliver profound messages. Within the tapestry of these stories, diverse characters come to life, each with their unique trials and lessons.

Although there’s a slight imbalance in the male-to-female main character ratio and 2-3 stories might feel familiar, the collection remains fresh and an ideal bedtime read. However, it’s worth noting that some stories contain themes of death and murder, which might require adult guidance for a really young audience. Nevertheless, with appropriate narration, these tales can cater to readers of varying ages, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable reading experience for all.

In conclusion, "Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad and More" is a literary gem that effortlessly merges entertainment with moral teachings. Grover’s compilation is a must-read, providing a wholesome experience for readers of all ages, offering tales that resonate long after the book is closed.

Book review of Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad, and More by Ollie Grover

This book is a collection of multiple short stories for children. I was hooked on the stories and flew right back to my childhood days after picking up this book. To any adult in their 20s and 30s, this will be a sweet reminder of their Champak and Nandan days.

The writing style of the author is curious and captivating. It reels the readers into the world of these characters. The characters and their disputes put the readers in detective mode about how the resolution would be determined by the authorities or people involved.

The stories range from human tales to animal fables. I personally enjoyed the section ‘the tales of human cleverness’. The stories left me anticipating how they would end, knowing well that the protagonist was going to win in the end. The suspense, even after this knowledge and an urge to finish the story, simply displays the brilliant ability of the storyteller.

Apart from these stories, I want to talk about the illustrations. They are absolutely gorgeous. The cover is a treat for my eyes. I cannot recall the number of times I’ve sat silently admiring the cute and colorful artwork on the cover. I got to see an aesthetic and appealing cover design for a children’s book after a long time. It is marvelous. Not only was the cover exciting, but the illustrations in between the stories were a delight to watch as well. After reading all those stories, one glance at the illustrations brings back all the details of the story in pictorial form. I was able to imagine the actions. Such a coordinated effort by the author and the designer creates a wonderful result.

Overall, I absolutely adored this book. I will recommend this book to all the parents who are ushering their children into the world of reading. Whoever is going to pick up this book will be filled with delight and love for the stories. So if you are planning to give a gift to any of your young reader friends, then this might be an absolutely wonderful pick on your part.

These adjectives sum up my experience of reading Gulgul, Ginmi, Peepal, Papad and More. I found myself having a constant smile on my face when my 11-year old niece and I were reading the book together.

This book takes us on a wondrous journey described across 25 Short Stories writ with humour, moral introspection, and diverse cultural backgrounds with a tinge of phantasmagorical elements.

The author's vivacious narrative style breathed freshness and unique personalities into the characters which made the Short stories more appealing to read. Some of my favourite Short Stories include Wooden Box and A Pinch of Salt.

One of the aspects that endeared me to this book is the author made distinctive attempt to impart life lessons while making the storyline fun to read. These stories have the power to mould young impressionable children who have restrictive attention span and malleable mind. Hence it is important to make the stories appealing to hold the attention span and at the same time impart wisdom. The author has done that beautifully through this book.

I would recommend all the folks to get the adventures of Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad and More by Ollie Grover for the young minds in their life.

As a parent who reads aloud to kids regularly, I am always looking out for short stories which are fun and meaningful at the same time. Gulgul, Ginni, Peepal, Papad and more is a fantastic book of short story collection for kids.

The author brings in very relatable characters and circumstances in the stories. The stories can open up some really interesting conversations with children relating to the characters and stories and how they would deal with such situations.
The illustrations, though few, are very aptly done. The title of the book is very innovative and can be understood perfectly upon reading the stories.

The language is simple, the stories are funny and interesting and convey important messages in a subtle manner making them a perfect bedtime read for children. The stories can be easily understood by 5-year olds, read on their own by 8-years and up and can be enjoyed by adults too. A great book to read in case one is facing a reading slump.
