Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Tony Tony Chopper. Man. Reindeer. Legend.

I really liked this omnibus, although yet again I struggled with the rapid change in action scenes when the pace picked up. Chopper's arc was surprisingly touching too.

As we finish up the Drum Island arc and move on to Alabasta, we are introduced to several key characters, including:
- Humanoid reindeer and pirate-admiring young doctor Tony Tony Chopper
- Luffy’s older (adoptive) brother, “Fire Fist” Ace*
- Gender-queer secret agent Bon Clay
- The Bond villain-ish Sir Crocodile, and…
- A beautiful and mysterious lady in a cowboy hat (currently Crocodile's right-hand woman)

* Although THANK GOD the anime changed the Whitebeard Pirates insignia that’s tattooed on his back! Seriously, Oda…if you need a footnote to make us not be primed to hate the character, maybe pick something else.

Continuing on from the last volume: the Straw Hats have to get a dangerously feverish Nami to Drum Island’s one remaining doctor, who lives high up a mountain. Sanji and Luffy take on the task, with Sanji first nearly dying to make sure Luffy and Nami survive , and then Luffy having to carry BOTH of them Considering the levels of Looney Tunes resiliency Luffy has, it is impressive how well Oda conveys through the visuals how tough this climb is!

It appears that Oda heard “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer” and thought: “Cute song – but it’s kinda fucked up that Rudolph only gets to be accepted because he is USEFUL.” Chopper starts life as a reindeer calf rejected by his herd – but his blue nose doesn’t DO anything. Things only get worse when he eats the human-human fruit, He’s taken in and named by the quack Dr. Hiriluk, but he still has an immense fear of rejection. Which makes it so heartwarming to see his face when he asks how Luffy can stretch like he does, and Sanji cheerfully replies “He’s a monster!”

Luffy also becomes very persistent about Chopper joining the crew before he even KNOWS what the reindeer’s most useful skill is – medicine. He just noticed that (Actually, manga/anime Luffy pretty much ALWAYS tries to recruit people before he witnesses their key skill, but usually after he’s seen something that reveals their character. I noticed this because live-action Luffy does it the other way around, like a more normal person would!)

Getting the explanation of why he’s called “Tony Tony Chopper” – he’s a tonakai (reindeer) with “strong antlers that look like they could chop trees” – explained the running joke where, later on, people keep calling Chopper a racoon dog. Not only are tanuki shape-shifters, but the words sound similar…so even if Chopper explains, people might not hear him right!

Vol16

Chopper’s two mentors are kind of terrible doctors in different ways. Hiriluk
Actually – is Dr. Hiriluk meant to be an inversion of Dr. Frankenstein? He does all kinds of weird experiments, but instead of making a monster and abandoning it, he FINDS a monster and calls it his son. Hmm…
Dr. Kureha, who becomes Chopper’s next mentor, is a VERY skilled doctor, but It’s just as well that young Chopper learned to combine the best aspects of his mentors/adoptive parents – meticulous knowledge, imagination, and persistence.

Funnily enough, the main antagonist of the Drum Island Arc just feels in the way of all this – which is exactly how Luffy treats him: with vague annoyance that they are even having to deal with this dude. King Walpol is an extremely selfish man
Luffy (grabbing Walpol by the face): I don’t care if you’re a king or not. There are things that matter more than power…
Walpol: …The Drum Kingdom is – uggh! – a member of the World Government! You’ve committed an international crime!
Luffy: I don’t care about that, either.

I’m going to wait to talk about Bon Clay as a character until their first arc is complete, but…OMG, translators, what are you doing? I get you may have skipped the slogan on the back of their coat in volume 15 because finding an appropriate explanation of “okama way” is tricky, given that the first word is a slur this character is proudly reclaiming. Some AMAB-people-with-femme-aspects-of-their-presentation in Japan have actually done this, and I’ve seen it pointed out that “queer life” would probably capture what Oda is going for here. But to have this character declare in volume 17: “I am a follower of the ‘oh come my way’ lifestyle!”? WTF is THAT? Considering they managed to get in Bon Clay’s song that goes: “This world is made for men and women. But when you’re me, you’re a man and a woman. That’s why I’m the strongest!”, AND the Q/A bit where someone points out that “Bon Clay” is based on a term for “year-end-festival”, like the female calendar-based code names, “so Bon Clay is a little of both, right?” and Oda responds “That’s right”…HOW do you screw up the rest? Of course, they also managed to mistranslate “Kung fu dugongs” as “kung fu jugons”, even though there’s a picture of the critter, so…yeah. Anyway, that’s one big reason this set of volumes can’t be quite a 5/5 for me!

The Straw Hats finally reach Princess Vivi’s country, the Egyptian-inspired island of Alabasta. She explains that the coup she is trying to stop involves Sir Crocodile framing her father, King Cobra, for capturing all the rain for himself at the expense of drought in the outer provinces, which has led to a simmering rebellion. She wants to find the rebel leader, who she’s actually known since childhood, and tell him what’s going on. The team have a bunch of desert adventures, including bumping into Captain Smoker again, and meeting Ace – everyone being amazed that this mature, well-spoken guy (who seems to be allergic to shirts, LOL) is related to Luffy! But finding the rebel army proves harder than Vivi anticipated, leading Luffy to declare that he doesn’t care anymore; he just wants to go punch Crocodile. Which is hilarious, and very Luffy, but he actually makes a good point: If Vivi actually trusts the Straw Hats to be her friends and help her…then it is silly to have the pirate who likes punching things wandering around trying and failing to carry out a diplomatic mission, when they KNOW who is pulling the strings!

CHOPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!

Seguimos :)

Drum Island Arc was a straight banger; expertly done and unexpectedly emotional with a wonderful new character.
And I have a feeling Alabasta Arc is gonna be even wilder since it's the conclusion and climax of Alabasta Saga. The plot is becoming more interconnected and serious, and I'm loving the crew more and more. Plus the goofy humor is growing on me and I'm finding it hilarious.

As vital as Chopper is to the One Piece story, his introduction is pretty weak, even more so when compared to the other Straw Hats that have joined so far. Yes, there's the usual emotional trauma backstory that tugs at the heartstrings, but the overall arc is weak, the most glaring problem of which being Wapol (heck, I have read this before and forgot about him). A forgettable villain, especially as it's early on and there's very little competition, has a huge impact when the sad backstories become a predictable sad fest. The rest of the collection is just set up material. It is certainly not bad. However, it doesn't hit the highs of previous entries.

My thoughts :: 💭
⤷ So far since starting my one piece journey, I have rated each ‘book’ in the series either a high 3 stars to 5 stars, however in (mainly) volume 18 I felt there was a certain situation which I did not appreciate at all, so this is unfortunately a low rating but we’ll get to that in a minute! First I wanna start on a happier note which was volumes 16 to 17. I thought that these were incredible and seeing the kind of person Luffy is, is just so entertaining. I feel as though his character the kind of person he is, is so integral to the plot and his reactions to important themes, he is what we need more of in society! Obviously we don’t want stretchy guys going around punching bad people, (lol) however I feel as though his motivations and morals are definitely something we could do with more of in the society that we live in today and going to Drum Island only emphasised that. This island again deals with oppression, greed and corruption especially from the government and ‘king’ who holds all the power over the vulnerable citizens. I’m sure there will be ongoing exposure to these themse and they will most definitely be prevalent throughout the entire manga! I really love chopper and his backstory, Oda obviously wants all his readers to be depressed with the way he has to ensure every character we know and love has the most painful childhood/life ever… nonetheless, I love that each character has these backgrounds as it motivate them to pursue their dreams and become good people and sort of avenge their loved ones that they’ve lost in hopes of making them proud which I love. In chapter 17 we learn more about chopper and how he wants to become a doctor, like his tutor and fatherly figure, mr hiriluk. He is just such an adorable character who suffers from being excluded and beaten by his own family just because of the way that he looks and I just feel like Oda has a very subtle yet successful way of discussing very political and pressing matters in society through characters like chopper; people who cannot change what they look like or how they are perceived by others and the abuse they face (such as exclusion and physical abuse) because of that. It is so important to recognise this for what it is and I think he does a great job of portraying that kind of oppression, that many don’t seem to recognise these days. Now onto the problem I found in volume 18 which at first, was really enjoyable as the straw hats were making their treck to Alabasta which I am super excited about. I already know this is gonna be super tension-filled with many unrevealed secrets and identity’s so basically just everything you want in a story! Along the way, Luffy found trouble as usual but through that we did meet a special character who is Luffy‘s brother, Ace, who also ate a Devil fruit. It was very interesting to see that kind of dynamic between Luffy, who has never really had a sibling and I’m intrigued to see how that kind of relationship will develop in the future when they meet again. Unfortunately the one and only spoiler that I’ve gotten from one piece even before I started reading or watching it was something relevant to Ace and although I’ve been spoiled, I can pretend I never saw it and love and appreciate his character for who he is, I’m upset the spoiler was so big as it did kind of ruin things for me but I won’t allow that to disengage me in the relationship he has with Luffy. The problem I found with this volume was the homophobia and this may not seem like a big deal to other readers and can acknowledge that it’s very minor in terms of the wider story however because it’s more of a personal issue (I am part of the queer community) I just felt a little uncomfortable with how comfortable other characters were (obviously no character from the straw hat crew) with being homophobic towards Mr . 2 who is a member of the Barack works. :( I’ve met Bon clay and I don’t remember this kind of language being used in the anime but Ive see it in the manga and I was just so blown away by the ease they found in referring to him with such language and although Bon clay refers to himself as an “Okama” which at first I did not think much of it as the meaning was unknown to me … that was until I got a bit further into the story and I saw how a character used a slur when speaking about him! I was like shocked because this kind of stuff is very disgusting and disheartening to see. (They used the F slur when describing Bon clay, if this is just my manga being translated that way, I’m not sure, because some online manga can have mistranslations but nonetheless). At that point I thought let me do some digging because I know he himself sung about about how he’s ‘not a woman or a man’, so I assumed I would now start referring to him with non-binary pronouns, but when I searched it up, this was the meaning it gave me:

“Okama (お釜 or オカマ) is a Japanese slang term primarily used to describe effeminate men, gay men, male cross-dressers, or transgender women. It is a complex term that can range from a self-referential identity to a derogatory slur, depending on context.”

Taking into consideration that Bon clay uses this term himself I can get behind that, as it may be a way of uplifting himself and being confident/comfortable in his identity, but when other people use it, it just feels derogatory and it made me super uncomfortable reading it. So that part of volume 18 I did not like at all and I hope it won’t continue as I read more. I understand that society might still be confused about gender identities that challenge the norm, however it’s still not right to use slurs and terms like this… The rest of the omnibus was really fun and that is why I did rate it 3 stars, I will be continuing the series because no matter how personal it is, it is still a very minor issue with a side character so I won’t let it deter me. I want society to be kinder to people similar to Bon clay and I hope this doesn’t make anyone think that it is okay to use this kind of language to describe people in the queer community! Even though I came across this problem, I’m still glad that we have many diverse characters, as this is a political manga for sure (no way you can disagree with that) and implementing characters like Bon clay not only shines necessary light on minorities within society and their treatment (similar to chopper) but also shows that we (queer people) are people, just like everyone else, and not some “anomaly” or “alien” in society. Bon clay brings comedic relief in such dire and dangerous times for Alabasta so I appreciate him a lot for that and also appreciate Oda’s choice to have queer characters in his story. So many shows and forms of media are trying to erase us and in times like this, reading one piece is every more important for me and definitely hope to see more queer identities as we progress further, sorry for the long review, thank you for being on this journey with me! :D

🎶 :: listening to the OP soundtrack or songs related to the anime immerse me completely into the story and makes the experience 10x more fun, give it a try!

This is one of the strongest volumes so far.

Finishing up our story with Chopper you get his full backstory. It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once. The storyline in the past is the best part though the one running in current time is nearly jut as good. Then we get to a short break where we see Ace, Luffy's brother, which is great. Also more of Smoker is always a plus. Then we get to see Vivi's past with kazo, and it's really well done. Infact I'm loving this opening to the next major arc more than I remember.

Here's to a kickass action packed volume! A 4.5 out of 5.

Favorite moment: ACE comes into the picture!

This is a love-hate volume cause even tho I love Chopper, his arc was annoying because of the doctor.
Ace was a really cool addition, I even forgot about him in this arc.

Ace is AWESOME
Tbh the first two volumes of this omnibus were a bit boring, I appreciate the story for our new crewmate but it felt like nothing happened for a couple chapters (for the over arching plot)
They keep building up Crocodile and his upper ranks, so I cannot wait for the upcoming battles.

Reread 2026: This omnibus volume finishes out the rest of season 2 and gets started on what will be probably the start of season 3 of live action. I will admit, the action scenes did make my eyes glaze over more than the first time I read this. Also- and this is really a general critique I have of the whole series- I wish Oda wouldn't constantly undermine emotional moments with comedy quite so often. This is definitely something the live action has improved upon, in that it trusts the audience to be invested in the scene by itself without constantly having comedy as a crutch or a distraction.

Original Review:
After getting a glimpse of Chopper in the last omnibus volume, we finally get a proper introduction and backstory of his character. The backstory was heart-wrenching, and overall I think this has been the strongest installment of the series so far. Excited to see the introduction of Ace, and curious to see how the Baroque Works/Alabasta story arc wraps up.

forgot to write a pre-read for this one… oops but it’s okay.

ok so the first two volumes are the ending of drum island which also mean the absolute travesty that is choppers backstory. why does everyone have a tragic past? why can’t oda just let them be happy and choose to become pirates because they think it’s fun or something?

the last volumes is the introduction the the alabasta arc which mean that we finally got to see one of my favorite characters, ace. we obviously got vivi’s backstory which you guessed it was just as sad as all the other ones. anyway we finally got a mr. 0 reveal, which i already knew but he is a great character so im great we get to see him.

this arc is their true adventure for this saga and its pretty long. as far as i’m aware the alabasta arc and saga are the fourth and sixth longest respectively in the manga at least as of now.

can’t wait to get into the next 3 volumes and get a refresher of everything that happened especially
knowing where the story is going :)

The First Two Volumes we start off with Luffy and Sanji trying to get Nami to the witch doctor on the top of drum drum mountain. When they finally get her there they had another problem the king that lived on drum drum mountain apparently he wanted his castle back from the witch and beef with Luffy and his crew. A battle took place and needless to say Luffy won with the help from Chopper a talking reindeer. Which the guys tried to eat earlier, that made me hold my sides laughing it was so funny. But after the battle Luffy asked him to join and with a little pros-wading from Nami Chopper said yes. They leave the ice land and continued to Princess Vivi's home land. Then we get a glimpse of the leader and second in command of Baroque Works, Mr. One and Mrs All Sundays, briefly.
In volume 18 They finally introduced Luffy's older brother Ace. He's not my favorite but he's close to it like number 3. in this volume they have the guys stopping at a busy port for supplies and of course in Luffy's case for something to eat. Where they attract to attention form the navy and the attention from his big brother Ace. Who works for Wight Beards crew another pirate captain who wants to be king of the pirates.

This volume is mostly dedicated to the end of the Drum Kingdom arc, and the start of the Alabasta arc.

While on the anime, that arc is what made me drop the series, here I feel the pacing works much better, and the plot is still funny and consistent, with some great action.

This is the closest I have come to giving a One Piece omnibus a 5 star rating. If I were reading these in single volumes I would have given volumes 16 and 17 all 5 stars. I love where things are going at this point. I love that the battles no longer feel kind of purposeless, I love the development of the characters and the dynamic of the Straw Hat Crew, I love our newest member Tony Tony Chopper, I love it all.
