ummmmm, 4.5 rounded up bc why not?
Let me start by saying thank you to everybody for the birthday wishes!! I know nobody asked, but I'm still going to tell y'all that I had a great 21st birthday yesterday, if you were curious. It was a lazy birthday where I stayed home with lots of mouth-watering food and cake, just how I like it (I wasn't in the mood to dress up and go out - can you tell I'm getting old?? 🫣🙂↕️)
Anyways, about the book. I might be a little generous with the rating, but at the same time, it was a fairly entertaining book. If we're basing it on feels alone, I would say 3, but Colin wanting to work as a game programmer (I think that was it but I have a terrible memory as we all know) added 0.5 of a star because this is necessary and relevant STEM representation that I live for. Summer being a girl's girl and kind of a badass added another 0.5 of a star and then the fact that this was my birthday read added 0.5 of a star making it a total of 4.5 stars. (side note - but this is my second high rating back-to-back after I had a 5-star read last weekend so I'm going to say that my May reading has been pretty good so far after the atrocity of most of my reads in April if you know what I'm talking about!!)
There was a lot of push-and-pull in the book and I didn't hate it. In fact, I actually thought it was the kind of push-and-pull that was rational. They both obviously are very different personality-wise so it makes a lot of sense, at least to me. I also didn't hate the grumpyxsunshine trope in this book, which I am pretty sure is a first because I despise that trope like no other. This is what I meant by sunshine female that is not stupid and by that I mean one that doesn't act like a 10-year old child. It is 100% possible to write a sunshine female that doesn't demean an entire gender and this book proves my point. Summer was one of the best sunshine females, if not the #1, that I have ever read about and I don't say that lightly. Also, grumpy men usually get on my nerves so much because the reasons for them being grumpy are usually laugh-worthy, but Fitz was grumpy with reason and it felt justified. Idk, but this is the first time I can say I genuinely liked a grumpyxsunshine book, so I'm just going to go with it.
I can only think of two reasons for not giving this an actual 5 (ik I rated it a 5, but it was still a 4.5), because it is very close to a 5 for me. The first would be that this book was kind of short and I don't make this complaint often, instead I usually make the opposite, but for this book I can think of a lot more things that were left un-dealt with that would have made more sense if clarified. I'm talking a couple extra chapters minimum could give us the information because the book kind of ended abruptly for me. The other reason would be the treatment of Hunter. I mean, this was probably a set-up for his book, but Summer and Fitz seemed a little dismissive of his feelings. Yes, it isn't the end of the world when someone doesn't return your feelings and it is possible to get over it, but sometimes it felt like these two completely invalidated his feelings.
I loved the Dean cameos and now I miss him so much (aside from Little Dean bc that was kind of traumatizing)!!
Jake Connelly? No words for this man, please he seems so hot!! He literally oozes sexyyyyy and I'm here for it all!! This next book is going to hit so hard bc he'll be there!!
Brenna Jenson? Yessssssssss!! honestly, I feel like I'm going to love her so much and its a good thing that she's also next.
Hunter Davenport? On my knees!! My baby deserves so much and I have faith that he'll get it. Literally so sat!! #hunterstanforlife(for now)
