Against All Odds

Rate this book
Strangers. Reluctant partners. Star-crossed lovers.

A mayor's daughter.
A detective investigating her father's disappearance.
They were two people who had nothing in common except their aversion to each other. When they found themselves in a dire situation with no way out, they were forced to re-evaluate everything they believed in. After pride was swallowed, prejudices were forgotten and aversion turned into something else, all bets were off.
The risk was huge. The odds stacked against them were overwhelming. But love. Don't get me started on love. Epic.

I am not a fan of first-person POV, especially when the first-person narration is disjointed with lots of plot problems. It made it very difficult getting into this story and the first person POV effectively blocked me from relating to Tristin, the hot cop. Ally, our heroine, has some serious self-esteem problems, but she knows what she wants and is quietly aggressive when it comes to the hot cop assigned to the case, but she refuses to trust him.

And don't get me started on Tristin! The "I can't love you because I'm still in love with my dead fiancée" trope is the one I hate the most. He isn't encouraging Ally, exactly, but he isn't discouraging her either. Little signs keep egging her on. I kept wondering when they were going to get around to trying to find the guy who kidnapped dear old dad. An awful lot of the first half of the book was Ally trying to get Tristin to kiss her. The second half was all about them breaking up just to make up. Annoying.

Ally is the daughter of a rich hotel magnet, but she doesn't have a clue Daddy Dearest is a crook. The police are tossing his office, and he's been kidnapped. The hot cop, Tristin, is sure Ally is lying to him. And she is. But she is also gob smacked by him. Ally is way, way out of her depth with Tristin and the kidnappers which puts everyone in danger, especially Daddy Dearest who doesn't get an HEA and with the mess he left his daughter in, she almost doesn't either, but as they say: Love Will Find a Way.

I truly enjoyed the characters, plot, and ebbs and flows of the book. So much that I am looking forward to reading other books by this author. Much more than my idea of a typical romance there is a thriller component and a battle between the two main characters that had me happy, mad, and even crying!

I didn’t get past the first few chapters; I wasn't intrigued enough to continue reading this book.
