She’s at his beck and call. He’s under her spell. Can a master and his mistress unshackle their guilty pleasures?

River Rogers endures the abuse of her cruel husband until she can finally steal her children away to safety, returning to the only man who’s treated her as someone special and barges into the playboy mobster’s sprawling mansion, ready to offer anything he desires.

Cruz MacKenzie revels in dark urges. But when the self-proclaimed witch spies the ripe, sexy, but desperate survivor who broke his heart by leaving the last time she was there, he’s torn between his urge to protect her and the desire to claim her innocence. Determined never to lose her again, the high-powered Chicago criminal offers her an ultimatum… leave forever or forfeit her freedom for one year.

Now contractually enslaved to her guardian, River’s hard labor, and humiliating punishment at his sensuous hands is made bearable by focusing on healing her children. Cruz hesitates to satiate his cravings while longing to pour out his black soul to his generous prize.

With a traitor in the house seeking to destroy them both, can this wounded pair break the chains of trauma?

The Devil You Know is a pulse-pounding standalone dark romance novel. If you like brooding heroes, a gothic atmosphere, and steamy chemistry, you’ll love Kay Freeman’s suspenseful tale of dominance and liberation. Buy The Devil You Know to play with fire tonight!

Trigger Warning:
Age 18+ Content.
This book is not for everyone. This Gothic Suspense Romance Novella contains power exchange dynamics. The hero is morally gray and not a warm and fuzzy character. Both the hero and heroine are survivors of physical abuse. He’s a victim of child abuse, and she is a domestic violence survivor. The hero’s mother suffered from drug addiction, and his father used his religious fervor as a weapon. Her mother committed suicide. The book also contains graphic descriptions of sexual activities. If you find any of this objectionable or triggering, stay clear. However, with all this said, the book is healing and hopeful and ends with a positive, loving relationship.

I want to start with... 3 stars does not mean I didn't like this book. The writing is good. The banter didn't have me laughing tho and somehow, I couldn't really see the plot. Parts seemed researched, and more seemed not. If this had been a full book, and contained more actual story and plot between the 'ok' Dom/Sub parts, it could've easily been 4 stars. It's too short for the premise.

Thank you @KayFree78949595 @lovebookstours for being part of this tour and reviewing this book. The Devil you know is a very hot and steamy read but I enjoyed it immensely. I read The Devil you know in a couple of hours. I felt like I was taken away from my world and drawn into River and Cruz world. Loved the characters especially River and Cruz and i loved how he protected her and her children. I didnt aways like the way he treated River though. I really didnt like Bones he was horrible and creepy . The story is dark an gothic which i loved . Loved the writting style and the plot. The story was very easy to get into and hooked me in straight away. This is the first book i have read from Kay Freeman i will be reading more. Cant wait for the next one 5 stars.

3 stars out of 5 stars for The Devil You Know by Kay Freeman. The book falls somewhere between dark romance and erotica. Parts of the book are unique, such as the MMC being Wiccan and the FMC being Christian. Spirituality is shown in a positive light for both as the two of them come together in prayer.

I feel the plot falls short. There were many different ways to take the storyline, but no direction is fully pursued. As a reader, I was left with more questions than answers.

‘The Devil You Know’ is a dark, gothic romance which is more novella than full novel. It is a quick read but make sure you check your triggers in advance because the novella touches on some dark topics. Cruz and River are well written characters and they are multi-layered and believable. If you are looking for a novella with mature themes and a lot of suspense then I’d definitely recommend ‘The Devil you know’.

I received a gifted copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.

Wowzers 🥵 This is definitely a book for a certain older age group. It’s a dark gothic romance. The characters are incredible and very thought of well. There are a lot of triggers.
I throughly enjoyed this juicy dark novel.

The devil you know, with its gothic setting, dark and almost supernatural themes, made for a quick and interesting read. It had creative and mysterious characters with a subtly suspenseful plot. Cruz, the mysterious anti-hero with some Hugh Hefner vibes, and River, a strange beauty trying to decipher the results of her past trauma from her dark innermost desires. It is definitely not your typical love story. Nevertheless, it was worth reading.

ARC Reader

“I stare at River’s face, wanting to stay lost in those blue eyes that look up, admiring me. And I realize the trouble I’m in.”

I went into this novella understanding that it came with several trigger warnings. So, as one does when picking up a gothic suspense romance, I was mentally prepared to read a lot of challenging and controversial topics. But I’m the type of reader that needs balance and rounded characters. If they are completely dark, they aren’t nearly as interesting as they could be. On the flip side, if they are completely light, they aren’t as interesting. Even the grumpiest of grumps should have a sweet side when it comes to those that they love, and the sunshiniest of sunshines need to have some fire.

In the case of the world in the aptly named The Devil You Know, love interests Cruz and River were absolutely rounded characters. Both of them had layers that gradually came out throughout the book as they were dealing with their own internal and external conflicts. Told from an alternating first-person point of view, Cruz and River each got to showcase the level of trauma they have experienced through the years due to parents and spouses, respectively. Yet, despite the difference in their circumstances, they wound up at the same place—The Palace.

As soon as the novella opens, you discover that The Palace is a house where Cruz dominates over a consenting group of women. Kay Freeman does an excellent job of immediately painting a scene that you can visualize, from Cruz’s first intimate engagement to the physical space. This is something that rings true throughout the story, as you wind up in scenes that evoke visceral reactions out of you as the reader. But beyond that, looking past the intensely sexual content, is Cruz’s concerns about and feelings for River. She really was the one that got away.

In River’s own introduction, we find her escaping one horrible man, only to land in a situation with another horrible man, as she flees to protect herself and her family with the help of—you guessed it—an arguably less horrible man. You want the best for River, right from the start. And as you get to know her, the more that you want to see her conquer her problems and become more courageous. Alongside Cruz, despite his methods not being the most orthodox, River is on her way to improving her self-image which has long since been tarnished. Even contractually bound to him, she is freer than she ever was.

While there is certainly care and thoughtfulness behind the relationship, the alpha power dynamic can be considered a little much. Before reading, you must be aware that this is not your typical “I will kill for you and I hate everyone but you” relationship. Still, there were a few times I personally felt that the novella could have gotten even darker, at least from an emotional standpoint. I found myself occasionally searching for elaboration on character backgrounds to make the world-building even stronger. How did a particular character end up in this position? What would the fullest extent of a character’s fear look like?

Of course, there is no getting around the fact that this is a dark romance, through and through. However, that isn’t to say that it is without some reprieve from the questionable morals and actions that permeate the plot. For instance, you have the pleasure of meeting Alex and Joy—two children who I feel take the entire story up a notch with their adorable nature. You need the energy that they bring to the table as you continue on toward the eventual happily ever after. Alex and Joy are, therefore, the key to keeping this novella as round as possible.

If you are looking for a light-hearted romance that comes complete with lots of laughs and next to no graphic scenes, The Devil You Know is not the right fit for you at the moment. However, if you are looking for something with explicit spice and mature themes that keep you on the edge of your seat, add this to your TBR. Kay Freeman has a way of pulling you into a literal dungeon and making you want to stick around. But before you dive into how River can come out on top after so much keeping her down… Get ready for a wild ride on the road to finding out the price of disobedience toward a morally gray man who sits on his very own throne.

I was really excited to pick up this book after reading the blurb. I didn't get great vibes from the start and about 15% in I was about to DNF due to the staccato vibe in the writing style, the cruel vibes I got from the MMC (unnecessarily cruel and mean without point. I love bully books, but this is not that.), his lack of compassion for her situation and her children (even internally, but especially towards her) and the very odd feeling that it was supposed to be a paranormal book despite the blurb never actually stating it as such. I think the part that really turned me off at this point was when he punished her in front of everyone with whippings and didn't even provide aftercare. That's not a Dom/sub relationship, that's abuse. But when I got to 28% and he told her "Essentially, you don’t exist unless I want you to. If I want to [hide my snake in a warm cavern] in front of you, I will.” I was all but done. I don't like cheating, and this didn't seem like just a threat to keep her submissive. I read on to be sure and he almost immediately had her pull him out of his pants to put on a condom so he could put his equipment in another girl's butt. I noped right out of there. I know they weren't together yet, but I can't handle it when an MC goes to pound town with someone other than the other MC(s) outside of love triangles. I hate it even more when it's used as a punishment. Just nope. This MMC isn't morally grey, he's morally corrupt even towards the FMC and I want nothing to do with it.

This book is definitely not for the faint hearted. With a fistful of trigger warnings including abuse, domestic violence, drug addiction, suicide and graphic sexual descriptions along with a morally grey lead, please make sure you're happy to read along.

That said, I loved this!

The trigger events really worked with this and made each of the characters actions and development make sense.

I did wonder whether I'd missed a previous book as River was returning to The Palace having been there previously and met Cruz...but this was just hinted at to form the connection they had together.

This was full on right from the start and I loved the tension that was building throughout. It was hard to work Cruz out at first and I liked that I was forever wondering whether he'd continue to be bad, or whether he'd change for River?

I assumed that we would just learn about Cruz and River's development as a couple - but was pleasantly surprised towards the end when we learn about the plan to overthrow Cruz as leader.
This developed quickly over just the last few chapters and although I could have read more about this plan and the characters involved, I think that the pace of this worked really well to build the excitement for the final events.

I wonder whether we might see a sequel coming, where we see the future for Cruz and River?

A brilliantly gothic, dark romance quick read which was full of excitement and dark tension. Loved it!

Spice Rating: 5/5🌶️
This book was excellent. I read it super quickly and couldn’t get enough! I really enjoyed the thriller aspect of this book, with a pretty serious plot to go along with the spice. This book certainly holds nothing back and the characters are real, flawed, and really flawed! I also wholeheartedly appreciate that their relationship began on not the best terms but that by the end it showed that these sorts of relationships can be healthy and don’t always have to be toxic! There a lot of misconceptions about the bdsm community and I think this book handled it well! As a Wiccan myself, I would have loved to have that explored more, as it felt a bit superficial to me, but as someone who is Wiccan in a relationship with a catholic, I really related to their dynamic there! Excellent quick read!

I received an ARC of this book to read for free, and this is my unbiased review!

This book was kinda cringey at first just because some parts of it wasn’t my cup of tea. What may not be my cup of tea may be others cup of tea and that’s okay! However, I did starting loving this as I got into it. I mean, who doesn’t love a man who is willing to take in a DV survivor along with her kids who have also suffered abuse from their father? And a dom and sub that ends up falling in love and deciding to be each other’s forever? Because I do. I wish there was a little more to it for sure especially that ending which leaves me questioning if there will be another book to it? 👀

A decent read, but not fantastic.

While it's a little too quick to be realistic, River's growth is visible in how she learns to stand up to Cruz and his sometimes unreasonable demands. Cruz however, while he eventually acknowledges he loves River, flip flops back and forth between being a decent Dom and a complete a$$ hat. The author makes it clear at the beginning that Cruz is morally grey and he does make sure he has consent for everything he does, but sometimes it just seems like he's being a jerk for the sake of being a jerk. In the end he does the right thing but it felt forced. The Wicca/ magic element is mostly ignored outside of one "love spell".

This book was not for me, but one person's yuck is another's yum. 🤷

I received an ARC through book sirens, and I'm leaving my honest review voluntarily.

I have rarely come across a book, with an older FMC, and I was thrilled from the start!

River, scarred & damaged by her past brings her to the front door, of the devil she knew, someone who once held her above water, who saw there's so much more to who she is, and her worth before she herself could.

I know, I know, Cruz is a morally grey character, but don't we love those? The alpha who goes soft, just for that one person?

Because this author delivers exactly that, and what a whip that is!

A first read for me by them, and I hope this isn't the last we see of Cruz & River because it's so easy to slip inside their world.

If you like BDSM, a scared FMC, that finds herself & her strength? This is definitely for you!

And a touch of wiccan wisdom, of course.

The Devil You Know is a steamy, gothic novella. Exploring themes of bdsm, it's sexy and gritty. River is desperate to escape an abusive marriage, but has she escaped the frying pan to be met with the fire? Cruz is a control freak and wants River to be his slave. If she agrees, he'll rescue her and her children.

Cruz is frustrated by Rivers' continual breaking of his rules by challenging him and refusing to be as subservient as he wishes. But secretly he likes her just as she is. And secretly, River is excited by Cruz's dominance.

When Rivers' children are abducted, Cruz proves he is a man of his word.

I think novellas are difficult to write well, and I'm generally not a huge fan of short stories or novellas. But I do think this worked quite well and I did enjoy the gothic steamy romance.

Amazing read! Once I started I couldn’t put it down. The plot was great and well developed. Cruz and River were made for each other. Both haunted and most definitely flawed. This is a dark romance; however, I expected darker than what I got. I loved the BDSM aspects and thought the author handle them extremely well. I loved Cruz and River together. Chemistry between them was there and hot! There were some twist and turns along the way. Ending with on I didn’t expect. I loved that they reached their HEA. This book left me wanting more! More dark romance. More Cruz and River. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us next.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a well executed dark romance mystery with fairly high heat levels. There were several ways the plot could’ve gone in this one and although the storyline that was followed through is the most simplistic one, it is also the most realistic one.
There were certain points that I would’ve liked to be clarified before the wrap up, like exactly how Bones and Gus’s plans overlapped, how did they work together and then against each other, how did Bones get himself fatally injured etc.
Bottomline being there was enough in this story that it could’ve been a full length novel and fun to read.
Thank you for sharing the ARC with me.

ARC review of 'The Devil You Know' by Kay Freeman

It's a dark romance story with quite a list of TWs, so don't expect something light and easy.
For those, who are not familiar with heavy topics, the characters and their behaviour may seem to look toxic and abusive, but it's the opposite.
Both, River and Cruz are victims of physical abuse in their past, and now their only copying mechanism is to inflict and receive pain. The only way for both of them is to clense themselves of their past by experiencing catharsis through deviant sexual activities. But the final result will bring River and Cruz freedom and hope for one healthy relationship 🖤.

This is a very dark romance. I’m still quite not sure if Cruz was a practicing witch or a priest of some kind. I know he was a dark person in love.
The plot is easy to follow even though The Palace was a place of many things. I like the relationship between Cruz and River though it’s dark and very sexual.
I also really like that this book is short and quick to read. There isn’t anything that doesn’t belong in the book.
I wasn’t quite sure about the rating for this book until the end. Because the ending really made the book in my opinion.

I am obsessed with this book! Wow! I could not put The Devil You Know by Kay Freeman down! And I am so hooked after reading the first two chapters that I ordered the next book!

What I love most is the anti-hero, Cruz, and his obsession with River. who has been through so much, and most recently, an abusive relationship with her husband. To protect her kids, she goes to Cruz, a pimp of the underbelly of Chicago, and literally makes a deal with the devil.

There's an amazing plot in this intense, fast-paced romance that kept me glued to the pages. And, I devoured the dark, steamy eroticism as Cruz pushed River into laces she had never known. Delectable!

I thought this novella had pretty great potential. Unfortunately for me the plot line missed the mark. I think it was set up for several pretty interesting story lines but nothing was pursued enough to be really captivating. This novella toed the line between erotica and romance but never landing solidly on either. I did enjoy the dynamic between the FMC and the MMC. I think if this was a full novel and the story line was developed a little more it definitely has 4 and 5 star potential.

River and Cruz have a past. When River comes back to Cruz for help and protection from her husband, his help doesn’t come without a price. She signs a one year contract to become his slave in exchange for his protection. But we soon find out there’s more going on than we thought. The suspense, the twists, turns, and uncertainty make for a good quick spicy read. This book does contain many triggers and may not be for everyone. But if you enjoy slave/master vibes, you’ll love this one. HEA ending.

This is a dark, gothic, romance novella that is explicit and touches on abuse - sexual, physical, and emotional - so be warned there are plenty of triggers in this.
I enjoyed getting to know River and Cruz a bit, though I'd have liked more.
Some parts felt very rushed - such as Gia towards the end. I'd have much preferred this to have been properly drawn out and explored in a full-length novel.
There's plenty of action and as this is the start of a series, I'm intrigued as to where it will go!

I didn't enjoy this book. I want to know the characters I'm reading about, and even though I've finished, I feel I really know nothing about them.

I think the story needed more details about their pasts. How and why was River being abused by her husband. What happened when she took sanctuary with Cruz the last time she ran away? More details please.

This is a short novella which I was able to read in one sitting, that’s how hooked I was. Drew me in and had me in a chokehold until the last page and left me very much wanting more. This genre is gothic or dark romance and it was completely captivating. The story was suspenseful and tense in places. One of those ones where you’re turning the pages, not fully aware that you’re actually holding your breath. A really good read.

I read this book on a total whim. It was of the genre I typically read and was by an author I'd never heard of. It was a quick read but I did have to put it down a few times because I wasn't personally in the mood for the darker content.

It's very well written and almost seems like it was meant to maybe be more? I could see it developing into a fuller book but it stands just fine as is. I enjoyed it and will certainly mark it as a recommended read!

Great gothic romance with paranormal elements

I just finished this contemporary gothic romance with paranormal elements, featuring an age gap romance between an older woman and a younger man. It's a dark and steamy read, not for everyone, so check the content warnings. This novel, the first in The Devil Chronicles Series by a retired art professor, is intensely captivating and thought-provoking, with complex characters and a satisfyingly twisted ending.

The plot and the concept was an interesting one.

River was with Cruz before and then she left to get married. Now she is back to escape a bad marriage.

The dynamic that they were going for was rough cause if they wanted to do the Slave/Master trope, I feel like Cruz needed to be more dominant in it. River was an awful sub because she would always fight back and never let go. I think she didn’t fully trust Cruz so she couldn’t let go fully.

This book satisfied my TW Obsession! A
great storyline with fantastic characters.
I did NOT see the bad guy, totally thought
it was gonna be someone else. Loved it!

I still felt like the tension could have
been built up a little bit more , hence
the 4.5🌟's, but all in all? Fabulous read!
