Sensitivity: Poems of a Highly Sensitive Teenager

Rate this book
Sensitivity should not be a curse,

when it’s really a great condition.

A collection of poems related to sensitivity, especially the trait of high sensitivity.

My experience being HSP, in verse.

A poetry book to light up your soul and wrap it in a big hug. To help you transit your own path, recognizing the gift you have always had.

What you need but don't know how to name. Until now.

I happened up on this through IG and I am so thankful that I did. I have raised four kids and my youngest is 19 - so I have been through so many emotions of a teenager. But - I havent really thought about it as much as I should have from THEIR perspective. My favorite poem is Authenticity. I challenge you to read it and to talk about it with your kids and see what they have to say.

This is a collection of poems written by a teenager with the "Highly Sensitive Person" trait. You can read more about HSP elsewhere. It is becoming better-documented to the point where my psychiatrist even recommended I look into it, and it describes my lived experience to a T. I enjoyed reading the author's reflections on her trait. The book was originally written in her native language of Spanish and I felt this translation was unfortunately rather clunky at parts, so I think it would be best read in the original language. I can tell she is a very talented poet and hope she continues to write.

Might get a little personal...

My friends and some of my family used to describe me as the biggest introvert on the planet.
But after reading the poems, I realised there are sensitive people around the world. Ever since I was a young girl, I liked to have my space. I was highly sensitive and I used to cry for the smallest of reasons. I had many thoughts which I never shared with anybody and wrote all of them down in my diary. I still look at those sometimes and wonder how I was so mature at that age.

The main point of this poem book is that Sensitivity is not a curse, it can be a blessing.
And I agree with it 100%
It's okay to be yourself. Especially when things get hard, know that you're not alone. You'll get through it.

I loved the poems in the book. I must admit that some of them stood up more than the others because of how relatable they were.

I loved the writing style. It's my first time reading a poem book that's outside of my school work so it was a wonderful experience.

I would definitely recommend reading this if you are looking for a comfort book filled with poems that are absolutely beautiful.

Not in a braggadocious way, but I have read a lot of poetry in my days walking this planet. I welcomed it into my life as a teen, I studied it in college, and I've used it as a safety vessel for most of my adult life. I can honestly say that what I read in Any Pasqual's "Sensitivity" was some of the best poetry I've read in a while. Any's vision and use of words is second to none. I truly felt myself back in that college auditorium reading some of the Romantics or cross-legged atop my bed in high school turning pages through classic poems of the greats. Her poetry makes you feel, and that I would say is the theme of this anthology. To feel.

I'd like to talk about a couple of my favorite works here. Starting with "Wind, What I Feel", which absolutely blew me away. I immediately felt like I was in the midst of a classic poem by Keats or Shelley. Any's use of the elements and their playing upon each other gave conflicting imagery but also a sense of unity. It's hard to explain, but I just KNEW that poem was going to touch me on a level that inspired me. Just like the old times!

Another poem that stuck out to me was "If I Could", which hit me so hard, that I had to immediately go back and read it again. And once I finished, I found it and read it once more. I'm not sure if it was the sublime repetition, the soulful, contrasting imagery, or the gut-punch ending, but whatever Any tapped into for this one, she should set up a timeshare there. It melted me and put me back together at the same time. Just simply put, a chef's kiss.

Other personal favorites of mine include a couple of shorter poems like "My Home" and "These Walls Cry Out Your Name". "My Home" felt, to me, like one of the defining poems of the anthology. It summed up an HSP's perspective very well for me. Your home is where you should feel comfortable, and love, memories, and fantasy (stardust) make for a better soul cement than brick and mortar. To quickly describe how "These Walls Cry Out Your Name" made me feel, I would say one name: Emily Dickinson. Ooooh, the feels in this one and the heartache the narrator leaves us in the last few lines simply take you on an emotional journey like no other. It's heavenly and sad in the same quiet breath. Any's longer poems are just as impactful and poignant, but these short ones really packed a punch. "Cycles" reminds me of Robert Frost in its simple structure, but ruthless, primal look at nature's seasons. Finally, I won't analyze it here, but "Silence" is also a short poem with cannonades of power behind each word. Check them all out!

Combining plenty of emotional feelings with the Romantic ideals of the classics, I found myself completely wrapped up in the pieces here. I only touched on a few poems here, but I assure you, the pages are completely dripping with beautiful prose and tangible emotions that just tug your heartstrings into an "annoying symphony". I would 1,000% recommend this book to anyone interested in poetry that touches on topics like all forms of love, brilliant introspection, relationships, and words that inspire and feel. The poems here filled me with remembrances and inspired me to pick up my own pen and find that love of poetry that I used to exude.

5 stars out of 5 for the pristine emotions throughout the art.

What a magical, beautiful read this was. Beyond outlining the power of living as a Highly Sensitive Person, this collection of poems is truly an ode to the splendor of humanity. The minutiae of life, the pedestrian and explosive moments, the quiet beauty of seasonal transitions and love. It's got a great deal of variety in terms of length, tone, topic, and emotion, and there's something for everyone in these poems.

There are some ethereal poems that draw allusions to nature, wind, light, frost, and the seasons, plus some deliciously modern poems that reference bits and pieces of day-to-day life. As Any Pascual flip-flops between long poems and short, visual allusions and broad storytelling, she captures a bit of wonder and magic in each piece.

Here were some of my favorite lines:

I vibrate at the frequency of a world where sensitivity is synonymous with love, peace and happiness.
What I do not trust is people forgetting their past.
Nor am I going to talk about the love of my life (which is myself), although sometimes I do rely on my ideas to love me.
All has always been about the balance between love, desire, and fear.

Poetry always takes me forever to get through, as I usually only read a handful of poems a day and usually by different writers. For this particular book, I'm glad I took my time and savored it. There was so much to sit with in each verse. In addition to the author telling her own story, she invites each of us to explore our world in step with her.

At the end, in the dedications, the author also peels back the veil and lets us into her world with heartfelt thanks to many of the figures who inspired her or her works. Even here, removed from the rhythm of her verses, Any's wisdom shines.

Highly recommend this collection of poems.

A true talent

Sensitivity: Poems of a Highly Sensitive Teenager by Any Pascual is a heartfelt collection that captures the ups and downs of being a highly sensitive person (HSP). Through her poetry, Pascual explores emotions with honesty and warmth, making this book feel like a comforting conversation with a friend.

One of the strengths of this collection is its uplifting tone. Pascual doesn’t just describe the struggles of sensitivity—she also highlights its beauty, treating it as a gift rather than a burden. Her words offer reassurance to anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by their emotions, wrapping readers in a sense of understanding and belonging.

While some poems stand out more than others, the overall collection is engaging and deeply relatable. Pascual’s writing is simple yet expressive, making it easy to connect with her thoughts and feelings.

Overall, Sensitivity is a touching debut that celebrates the power of emotions. Whether you’re a highly sensitive person yourself or just appreciate introspective poetry, this book is a gentle reminder that sensitivity is something to be embraced, not hidden.

Best Sensitivity Poems

Any Pascual uses poetry to express her youthful emotions, moods and thoughts. I like how her poetry has a certain warmth. She loves her mother and expresses love for her granparents. It shows emotional intelligence to be able to understand the dynamics, the mood changes of youth and the beautiful haikus leave you thinking.
The poems have a unique flow. Each topic deep dives into the daily feelings of self doubt, transforming from a child into adulthood, the hardhips and love that she experince are insightful to what other teens may be feeling too. Each poem is highly relatable. Though we are all different and traveling our own pathways of life, we all have a common need to be heard and to be understood.
The poetry is dramatic, heart felt and honest. The journey is enlightening. It brings awareness to the way you make people feel is reflective, and taking more care to ensure the things that we say and do are thoughtful and kind. This is definitely a great read.

Beautiful, honest and raw

What a beautiful book of poetry this truly is!
I love Any Pascual’s optimistic but honest way of expressing her emotions- using her ‘highly sensitive’ feelings to create stunning poems that will resonate with so many other people too.
Through carefully crafted words and raw emotion, Any bravely pours her heart and soul out - giving us an insight of how she feels about being sensitive- and how she feels about others and life situations . My favourites were ‘ New season’ - loved the beautiful imagery in this, ‘Home’ and ‘Love’- the sentimentality and use of emotional language in these two poems is beautiful!
Such a talented writer and still in her teens!
Watch this space for this young lady! A beautiful and very recommended , heartfelt read!

Although the title states these poems are from a teenager, they aren’t juvenile in any way. They also aren’t mature in theme either, I think they are suitable for all ages. I really liked that they weren’t all written in the same style, pattern, length or subject nature. I particularly like haikus and there were a few throughout the book. The poems aren’t heavy emotionally, but they are about deeper feelings at times. There are poems about being a sensitive person as the title would suggest but also poems to the authors mother, spirituality and even poems inspired by other poets. I did struggle with some of the longer monologue type poems but they each tell a story. I love that the author wrote this book of poetry and published it in both English and Spanish.

I liked how the author poetically describes and compares the journey through life as a sensitive person with various things like driving a car. As someone who is also quite emotional and sensitive, I related and nodded in understanding while reading the poems so many times, some of them touched my heart and soul. Additionally, some poems dedicated to people from the author's life were truly beautiful gestures, they reminded me of some people from my own life and I liked that. I struggled a bit to read some longer poems that were like monologues, but overall, I really enjoyed the book!

I came across this book on IG and was drawn to it by the title. As a parent to a sensitive teenager, it was an immediate buy for me. This is a well written and compiled collection of poems. If you’re or know anyone that is highly sensitive then this poetry book is a good resource to understanding them. I’m glad I read this book as a poetry lover and a mother to a sensitive teen. I give it 4.5 stars and definitely recommend it to all freestyle poetry lovers.

I am so glad I came across this lovely autobiographic poetry written by a young author. Even though what the author is sharing is deeply personal, there is so much to connect with and feel that there are pieces of you in it too, even if you do not consider yourself a highly sensitive person.

Everything in the collection flowed wonderful and I would love to see more poetry like this.

Touching educative collection on sensitivity

This collection was filled with poems and lots of prose that gives insight on the struggles of living with sensitivity. It definitely worth the read if you love prose. Support others, understand and love them for who they are. You never know what they're facing.

Definitely recommend.

Any sheds light on her being a HSP and writes things as they appear to her. An interesting perspective to read from. It can be difficult for sensitive people to share their world with us, I congratulate her on trying to bring the world in on her personal feelings. What a great accomplishment for a young author. Interested to see how her work grows with her.

poetry from the heart

Any sent me a message letting me know her book of poems was available and I decided to click and read. I think the last collections of poems I read was in tenth grade English. Her words evoked emotion and her phrases insightful beyond her years.
