If it were not so well written it would be three stars.
I really liked the main female character Charlie and the two side characters Bill and Gus (they appear in several books) but Ace (the male lead) felt very one dimensional, he was all about the sex. Now anyone familiar with this series knows there is a mysterious corporation that is the villain of the series. The "oucasts" of which Ace is one are the failed remnants of where the genetic experimentation (done by the Government) went wrong. Outcast nd.on the run for decades the "outcasts" are now being accepted as valued members of the P.S.I. This does.not.men however that the corporation does not want.to capture them or the young children (mainly girls) who escaped.from their facilities over twenty five years ago.................. Now Ace is a horse shifter who has a very volatile relationship with his shifter side and spends his life hiding. Charlie, is a young woman who.has a great affinity with animals especially horses, her ranch borders the.compound which featured in the previous book, hence Ace's proximity......he is seriously drawn to Charlie but resists people close to him are not safe........he has a decision to make , is Charlie safer with or without the him............. Young Charlie is a delight, Gus and Bill are always good fun as are the twins Mac and Car ................. But although well.written the.plot left me feeling something was missing, the story, after a slow.beginning (a flashback) skips over any story right to the two leads bonding what plot there.is seems more about setting up future books and introducing new characters. I enjoyed the book in parts very much I just feel.the author rushed to the finish.................
After 28 books in The Immortal Ops, PSI Ops, and Outcasts series which I have read and loved all, this one is my least favorite.
I felt there was a lot of repetition and redundancy in events and characters. Add to that, there is a missed opportunity to have a well-thought-out relationship between Ace and Charlie.
I love Gus and Bill. I think they perfectly represent the fucked up state men who are bred to be soldiers become. I loved that in every book they appeared, they were helping the shifters find their mates. But it reaches a point where "enough" is just "enough". Why is 70% of this book Bill and Gus????
And to have an epilogue featuring Ace and kid-Charlie and then they meet again at the 55% is ridiculous. Out of the 31 chapters, Ace and Charlie had roughly 7 or 8 chapters!!!!!! not nearly enough to build their relationship like the other men and their mates in the other books. Not to mention to get out of the awkwardness that Ace met Charlie when she was four!
Instead of giving Bill and Gus most of the book, maybe cut back a little to have few chapters between Ace and Charlie!!! the 200 kph "I love you" did not make sense.
And Charlie's character was very disappointing. I truly had high hopes for her from the epilogue. figured she'll have a better back story. She was reduced to a 30-year-old crybaby who puffed her eyes out because her crush did not want to sleep with her after finding out she is the kid he used to babysit!!!!!!
A lot of infor was rushed at the end and many did not make sense. This did not feel like the usual well-thought-of plotline I am used to from Mandy.
and I want to state out something I say it all the time. I DO NOT LIKE OR CARE ABOUT THE SIDE-KICK HORNY FRIEND THAT PUSHES THEIR BUDDY INTO GETTING LAID.
It was still an enjoyable read. I will definitely continue reading the series. I want to know if the Scottish twins each get a mate or if they share one! what happens with Jessie?
Ace is an 'Outcast' - a defective model of the genetically engineered super soldiers who didn't quite fit the mold. The government had a price on his head and would collect of they could find him. But things have been changing in the PSI Ops world, and lately, the Outcasts have been helping the Immortal Ops - natural-born supernaturals - hunting for shady scientists and criminals. In particular, The Flock, owners of a Spa and Wellness retreat, cover for a bunch of zealots planning on eradicating humans for the superiority of supernaturals. They are part of the Corporation. This is all weaved into the beginning of the book if you haven't read the rest in the series.
Twenty-five years ago, Ace - manipulated horse shifter - was working as a ranch hand 'Joe Barnes' at Samuel’s ranch, where he found himself being an unintentional babysitter for Samuel's four year old daughter Charley, after the random things she had done to chase off the nannies. She called him her best friend, and was a veritable Dr Doolittle, able to talk to the animals; hearing their voices.
After a horrific night where Charley is apparently killed by a mountain lion and Ace is captured and held and tortured for five years by The Corporation, he refuses to let himself get close to anyone again. Unfortunately for him, erratic regulars Bill and Gus, get involved.
Bill and Gus are the hilights of this series, and I suspect given the hints, we're going to get a Gus transformation and story at some point.
The research Roth has conducted into caring for horses and other equine knowledge is extensive. As with all of her books, she makes sure she knows her stuff before committing it to the page.
There's plenty of action. The childhood bits with Charley are hilarious and she's just as much fun as an adult CJ. Ace is a grumpy grump to start with, but yeah, things change there too.
A few of the team appear or get a mention, such as Mac, Car - cousins to Striker - Armand, Casey and newbies Jesse, Robert and Teddy are introduced as well as Charley's actual BFF Lindy. As well as the ongoing evil dudes story, we have romance, a tonne of laughter, lots of fighting and we get the steam and the HEA.
I've waited a while for this one and I can't wait to see where it goes next. Absolutely loved it.
Well worth the wait. Another great read from Mandy M Roth. As with most of the I Ops world Mandy gives you back story to the main male character, this shifter story starts twenty five years ago, when horse shifter Ace Hargraves was going by an alisa he had only been using for three years, Joe Barnes, a ranch hand who knew he shouldn't have gotten himself comfortable and stayed in turn one place for so long. He knew being an outcast, trouble would come knocking, by either his own government who were trying to eliminate him for being the failed experiment, or worse The Corporation who would want to torture, test and his only knows what else.
Charlotte (Charley) Eyres the only daughter of ranch owner Samuel is four years old at the time, or as she liked to tell everyone she was nearly five! She went out of her way and follows Barnes all around the ranch everyday, telling him he was her bestfriend. Charles also had a special gift, she could talk to the animals around the ranch or as Ace thought it was a girls wild imagination and she just had one sided conversations with the animals which included horses, turtles, hawks and a mouse she had named pockets. On one night all hell broke loose on the ranch, when men from The Corporation came calling and a huge fight broke out, fearing for her safety he tells Charley to run to the main house, but next he see's while being tracked was a large Mountain lion kill Charley right before his eyes. Or so he thinks.
In this book we are blessed with our two new favourite twins Mac and Car, and everyone's best off couple make a return and yet again steal the show a little, Bill and Gus. We have an alpha male who opens his mouth and puts his foot right in it, a lead female who doesn't listen to what it's worth. A couple of major fight scenes, romance, a sexual encounter, plenty of laugh a loud moments as Mandy's humour shines through. And with all her books the HEA. This is a stand alone but I strongly advise you read in book order otherwise you will get spoilers.
Ace is laying low, working on a ranch, trying to hide from his past. Being an Outcast, he has to because he's wanted by the organization. His boss's daughter, Charlotte or as she demands to be called, Charley, is always under foot. As he's told her many times, he's not her babysitter. She talks to, or appears to talk to, all the animals and according to her, he's her new "best friend". She's annoying and runs wild around the place, add on the fact that she's has a mind of her own, a knack for trouble and doesn't listen! So why does he feel so protective of her? After an attack on the ranch, he believes her dead and he's captured. Fast forward twenty-five years. Charley's all grown up and runs an animal rescue. She has memories and flashes of people and events from her past but her father tells her what she thinks she remembers, never happened. The man she remembers never existed. Yet she knows better, she could never forget what she saw or her best-friend. Oh but fate strikes again and along with Bill and Gus, bringing things full circle! This story is amazing and I love both of the MC's! Full of intense action, lover's quarrels (from two different sides), steam, unknown secrets revealed and too many laugh out loud moments to count. (I kid you not, I laughed until I howled several times) Bill and Gus are two of my favorite book characters of all time! Did I enjoy it? YES! Do I recommend it? YES!!!!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
In this newest book in the Immortal Ops/Outcasts series and while it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the previous books before reading this one as it introduces a lot of the characters that are seen in this book. Former Immortal Operative Ace Hargraves is a genetically altered super soldier who has spent decades on the run from the government, all while helping others. But the time has come for this horse-shifter to do something to help himself if he wants to protect his mate and live to see another day.
So while this one was good and I enjoyed that Ace got his HEA with Charlie. I was hoping for more when it came to Charlie and her family. I honestly would have thought her Dad and "Uncle" would be a lot more involved in her life even if they didn't agree with her choices. And it was kinda left hanging as to what happened to them, which I didn't like. I loved seeing the Twins and Gus and Bill, as they are always good for a laugh. I do feel like I need to know more about a certain cat, but I need a story for one of the twins at some point first!! All in all, still a good read. I just felt like some things were left out, whether on purpose or forgotten about-I don't know but I am hoping it was purposely.
Nothing is as it seems I love my time spent in Mandy’s Immortal Ops / PSI / Outcasts world. This story centres around an Outcast called Ace who can’t move past the horror and loss of what he lived through many years ago. Bill and Gus are back and in their own whacky way add to the story with much fun, seriousness and hilarity, cryptically leading Ace back to a place from his past where he needs to be. Unbeknownst to him his future and his mate are there. With danger fast approaching, the past is coming back to haunt him and this time Ace must protect his mate. Surprisingly, with help being revealed from an unexpected source this adds another layer to the future stories that will come from this - I love it. I also really enjoyed the humour between the operatives and Bill, and love that Gus and Bill have their own agendas in the Immortal Ops world. Would loved Charley and Ace to make appearances in future stories.
Ground Training Mandy Roth due 3/14/24 5 stars Ace & Charlie
Wow was I happy to see and read another OPS book. I have them all and most in audio as well. I refuse to admit how many times I read and reread them.
Now to this amazing book. Put Bill, Gus, Karr, and Mac in the same story and it's bound to have some great laughs. Add a past and a present that run into each other, secrets discovered, answers found. And it is another un-put-downable story. Of course, Mandy's books almost always are.
Charlie runs a rescue and is a traveling vet. She's living on the homestead she grew up on. You need to read to find the connection to Ace. No spoilers. But. Never fear there are loyal if weird friends, and enemies that we've seen before.
The chemistry is sky high as is the big horse that rescues her and she rescues him. I can guarantee if you are a fan you won't miss this one. Read it and you will be a fan.
Charley knows her dad is hiding something but she is determined to reclaim her past. Ace hasn't quite accepted the losses in his past. That us until he is forced to by circumstances. Ground Training is the latest in Mandy M. Roth's Immortal Outcasts series. I enjoyed returning to this world Ms. Roth has created. Ace has a kind heart that he keeps well barricaded. That is until a spunky almost five year old decides he is her best friend...and then he loses her. The past a present collide when Aces horse forces a shift. Can Ace accept the past isn't as he remembers? Can Charley accept that her memory isn't as flawed as she thought. Will they survive to see their future? I cannot wait to see as Ace and Charley learn to trust in each other.
Ground Training is the fifth book in yet another incredible series. Ace Hargraves is another in a list of people that were made into something more than human. Just trying to live the best life he can, hiding from anyone who could harm or re-capture him, one of the outcasts. This is the story of Ace and Charley, along with so many of everyone's favorite characters from previous books. Follow along with Ace and Charley trying to get their happily ever after. Of course there is a lot of action and plenty of belly laughs. As always, Ms. Roth never leaves you with anything other than a great story. Here's to hopefully a very long list of books to add to this amazing series! 10+ Stars Ground Training
Do not drink while reading! Seriously! I laughed. HARD. I loved this book! Ace cannot get over his past. A horrible event that happened twenty five years ago that left him captive and those he cared about dead. Charley can communicate with animals. She loves horses and is a veterinarian. There is one man that she has thought of for the past twenty five years. A man that her father will not admit is real. These two meet again in a very unusual way and it takes a bit for them to come together. No spoilers! There is an HEA. This book was funny, serious, hot, and caused me to stay up way to late reading.
Twenty five years ago, Ace was lying low, working as a ranch hand and going by the name of Joe Barnes. He is a misfit, an outcast, a genetically modified horse shifter whom even his own government want killed. It comes to a head when an attack leaves the owners and a precocious four year old dead. Now back in the area Ace is still trying to come to terms with that nights events when he meets a Vet called CJ. Litterally fur might fly with these two. I really enjoyed this story. It had plenty of action and loads of humour. An absolutely great addition to the collection.

This is the Fifth book in the series and we are back in into the immortal outcasts series. Once more the author doesn't disappoint in the least and we get to see a bit of where the previous book left off after the battle in the wellness center. This book is about Ace and Charley and i have to say that i loved them both so very much. Fast paced and with much action lots of fun and of course we got to see some of my favorite characters. I love the twins and i love Bill and Gus!(they so need their own books!) I absolutely loved it!
Love the series and the characters and loved this book. Ace is a horse shifter. Twenty-five years ago he worked on a ranch where a young 4 year old was constantly hanging around him being a pest. One night all hell broke loose that put everyone in danger. Ace thought for sure everyone had died and in particular the child who was called Charley. All these years later he's brought back to the ranch where he finds not only that Charley is alive but she's his mate. Fantastic reading.
I adore all of the PSI-Ops and Immortal Ops books. Ground Training was fantastic to add to the mix. I really like Charlie and Ace. There was also a good mix of operatives along with Bill and Gus who are my absolute favorites for being bat-s-crazy. They story was a good journey with the details and characters helping to bring everything together. I like that the was a bit of previous stories to build on this book, but not enough that you lost enjoyment if you hadn’t previously read prior ones. Can’t wait for more tails, or fins, furs etc to make their way on to my reader.
It is now Ace’s turn to find his mate. The problem is the person who is his is someone from his past that he thought was long dead. Charley is a strong character who I just adore. This is a quick paced book but has the same elements as the other books. Yes we do get to see two of our favorite characters from the other books Gus and Bill. New characters are also introduced so we know there will be new stories to come ( fingers crossed).
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was an enjoyable read, where we got to learn a little more about Ace, and more snippets about Bill and Gus (man I love those guys) Mac and Car yet again up to their antics…. The flashback was great to give us where it started for this couple, and it leaves it open for future books, like Charley’s dad and where he is, we are introduced to a new character Jesse……that will be interesting to see. This is definitely a book that needs to be read in order. Stubborn Alpha males, strong women and the best of the best Bill and Gus…..what more can I ask for…..
Loved it! Life has a way of circling back around and what was once a danger is still a danger. Twenty-five years ago, Ace was certain he failed in protecting his boss's 4-year-old daughter. It's not as if he hadn't paid in spades for his failure. But now he's back in Colorado and out to put his past to rest, except his past is back and with it a grown-up Charley who is so much more than the best friend she declared herself all those years ago. If you are looking for danger and action to go with your romance, you'll find it in Ground Training..
Not listening I absolutely love how the author makes fate intervene twice in this story! Reading some of the backstory adds a depth to the book that I didn’t even know was missing. Like all of her books, she takes us on a wild ride to the HEA with side quests for cupcakes and shenanigans that bring laughter and joy to some intense situations. The cast of characters includes some of my favorite misfits and new characters that I can’t wait to read more about. This author, and this series, continues to be one of my all time favorites, and this story is another jewel on the shelves of her library. I can’t wait to see what she brings us next!
Ms. Roth brings us back to her immortal Ops Outcast series and it was worth the wait. She writes of love, overcoming obstacles, and fighting for their love. Her characters are not always good or bad. They make choices; and, those choices take them on paths with more choices and more paths, kind of like real life but a lot more exciting. This book does not disappoint. I loved it! Thank you Ms. Mandy!
This took me a while to get into and I think it veered away from the usual shapeshifter military hero persona Charley is certainly a spunky verbal child who in her own right is a ms Dolittle. Her ability to provoke Ace is humorous in itself. Of course no story would ever be complete without our loveable Gus and Bill. What they bring to each story is the icing on the cake. Overall another enjoyable read.
Immortal Outcasts book 5. Ace aka Barnes and Charlotte aka Charley. They have history but it takes a while to come to terms with who they are. There are a lot of crazy situations that kept them apart. In true Immortal world fashion, there is some serious good vs evil. Now add Bill, Gus, Mac and Car and now this book kicks it up to level 10. Filled with twisty angst, drama ridden, gut wrenching action. I loved every minute of this book. Well worth the wait.
Loved the work Mandy put into the backstory on this one. The details of Ace and Charley were well done. I couldn't wait to hear how Mandy was going to bring them together. I agree with others that the ending felt rushed. I'm not sure if that's the case or I just didn't want it to end!! I also loved the appearance of Bill and Gus. I enjoy thier antics, but also the hints at thier past. I hope at some point we hear their full story!!
Undoubtedly another awesome chapter in the Ops series. I love it because it’s perfectly written for the rescue and not over the top. I could picture every action and nuance in the story. I laughed, cried and cheered the good guys. Enjoyed the hidden gems that seems to be leading up to an epic battle. Bill and Gus just get funnier with each book and I enjoy learning a little more about them with each story. Well done!!!!!
I have read this entire series and was so excited for this latest edition. Mandy M. Roth has so much talent, it shows in her awesome storylines. Her characters are such great beings that you want to be part of their lives. This was a great read I highly recommend this series to everyone. Awesome job story was well written. Looking forward to more of this fine talent.
I’m not sure when the previous book came out in this series but I’d presumed there would be no more. It took me a while to remember who was who but once I did I really enjoyed getting back into this series. I didn’t forget Bill and Gus, but who could. They are the real stars.
Dearest Mandy, do not ever stop writing, your stories are the best, your characters have me laughing constantly, I’m eagerly waiting for another slice of the Immortal madness universe. Ace and Charley, I sort of figured it out( no spoiler alert here) from the first few chapters, it’s one of the best stories of all the immortal ops tales, so far!.
I had already known I'd love Ace from Graham's book & I was hooked from the minute I met sassy little Charley. The interactions in this were perfection & Bill and Gus stole the show a little. It gave Sweetpea & Newt vibes but a bit more cowboy. It's definitely a fun read with some new characters I'm looking forward to learning more about in future books.
I loved this story. Poor Ace, he deserves to find happiness. So many years being tortured, and not just by the bad guys. He mentally tortures himself over what he considers his failures. And Charley, she is just so cool. I love her. She just may be my favorite of all the female main characters in all the ops series and their offshoots.
