Six friends break into their English teacher’s classroom on the last day of school, seeking revenge for the failing grades they earned on their final exams. Chaos and destruction ensues.
When one of them is found dead in a bathroom stall, the partying stops. Suspicious of one another, they try to flee the school, only to find the doors locked and a deadly storm raging outside. Trapped for the night, they wait for help to arrive.
But they are not alone. A killer hides among them, one determined to fill the halls with blood.
A story that was very fast-paced and kept me turning pages racing to the finish. But for me the kills were too quick, and credibility discarded too quickly. The twist at the end was unexpected but kind of left me feeling cheated. If you like gore and high body count, this one is worth a read.
I would have rated it higher had there been more suspense and not just kill after kill after kill without much foreplay. Also I think the author missed out on a chance to document the killers descent into insanity more. There was an opportunity to bring some amount of empathy to his plight which would have produced for me a better conflict between the victims, the killer, and the killers rapidly changing persona.
“We broke you! We broke you! You can kill me, but that won’t change anything.”
An English teacher at his wits end finally plummets into violence as a way to escape the hell his life has become. Donavan Blackwood is living a life in shambles as the students seem to get worse with every passing year and his wife Justine becomes more insufferable each day. Blamed for their lack of success in careers and children, she's quick to point out all his shortcomings and offers nothing for assistance. Gaining traction and only five years before he can retire and claim his pension, he's disgusted when the principal; Mr. Brown offers him an improvement plan that basically offered the athletes and seniors a hall pass for failing his class all semester. Refusing to comply and facing termination, it's the final rope to snap that set this harmless man into the homicidal maniac who would take the lives of countless students that night. After confrontation, he stabs his boss to death before cramming his body into the truck of his car. Spotted by a fellow student, he's quick to kill him also (Collin Jones). Returning home to yet another argument with his wife, her blowing cigarette smoke in his face was the final spark before he proceeded to stab her dozens of times. With three bodies to hide and limited daylight, he would go miles from home and push each body twenty feet deep into the ravine. With this new sense of rage overtaking him, he sets out on the ultimate killing spree that'll leave countless teenagers dead.
Murderer. The title clung to him like a second layer of skin.
Seth Brantley and his girlfriend Carli West are celebrating their final toast as seniors when their friends Berry Stranton and his girlfriend Emily, and their friends Justin Thomas, Olivia, Liam and Peter. As they decided to slash the tires of their most hated teacher, it'll set in motion a chain of events nobody ever saw coming. Already murdered three people, the tires were his breaking point and when he returned to the school near midnight and discovered his heavily vandalized classroom, the hunt was on. Seperated each student, he began picking them off and torturing them to death. When they first discovered Liam with his throat slit in the bathroom, they began splitting up searching for a way out. As each door was padlocked shut, the windows were bulletproof leaving them isolated. Phone reception was missing due to the horrific storm outside, and their teacher had all the rage to keep his killings going all night long. Next Emily was killed, followed by Olivia and Peter. With only Carli, Seth and Justin left, they each will fall to horrible torture. Justin sacrificed himself for a chance for Seth and Carli to escape, but he would ultimately be severely injured and left to drown in the swimming pool. Capturing Seth brought great elation to him as he died horribly, and he would have Carli last who managed to break the chains and run to the abandoned middle school. With her legs cut by the saw and a noose around her neck, she would be killed in the end and he would be left alive with a vendetta againsts even more of the town.
The stench of death hung heavy in the air. He breathed it in, smiling at the sea of corpses beneath him.
I’m giving this 2 stars and honestly that’s generous. This book had SO much potential to be a great slasher. It was an interesting take to let us know who the killer was from the start, even though I am not a fan of that. I would have rather the first few chapters been of the kids and showing us more of them being rude and showing how “bad” they were or at least give us more of Mr. Blackwood with his students to show us his decent into madness because honestly it just comes out of nowhere and he just snaps and starts killing people.
Honestly the kids in this book did make stupid choices, but the killer is an almost 60 year old man and you’re telling me at one point when all 5 are there they can’t over power him? They don’t even try. There were a few times at the end where it could have been ended and knowing this man has killed your friends you take the time to go untie your boyfriend instead of beating him in the head with a baseball bat that you just hit him with. Like you knocked him out and then think he’s down for the count? No! Keep hitting him.
It all seemed a little too good to be true that he was able to do and get away with all of this from the start, like how did he even know these kids were going to the school to drink and wreck his room? He had no reason to go back up to the school at all to find this out and then have the time to go get enough chains to chain up every single door in the building. I’ve read a lot of horror and extreme horror and I know a lot you have to take yourself out of reality for it. But this was just too much haha
Also the ending is very anticlimactic and I’m sorry I’m all for a book giving a twist and letting the bad guy win, but this was not one of them. The main girl, our could be final girl, literally did nothing to this man. The only reason he had to dislike her was because her friends were dicks to him and he didn’t like them. She should have won. There was no reason for her to die and him to walk away.

A very dark book about a man broken to his core and spirals out of control. The book was pretty good. A lot darker than I thought, something about the main character Donovan and the overall book didn’t sit well with me. Ominous at times. The book was gorey and had some senses of hope for the characters. The characters were kinda shallow and the story really didn’t get you invested in who they were. The book started quick and kept my attention the entire time so, I guess the character depth wasn’t that important. The author did a great job of explaining and depicting the brutality of the killer. The kills weren’t inventing or anything special but, you really felt every one of them. Overall, the book was decent. Probably wouldn’t read it again though.
Not the ending I was expecting. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. This is really a 4.5/5 and a great introduction to slasher/extreme horror. Once I picked it up the only reason I put it down was because I needed sleep.
**slight spoilers ahead.** I just want to know how he didn’t get caught in such a short amount of time? Granted Don was slowly becoming in hungover throughout the entire novel, but…why didn’t he just let Carlie at least TRY to escape? If she was his “best student.” That was genuinely the ONLY thing I didn’t really like.
For what it intended to be, it was great. But I will say, the Teacher was the worst character. So so whinny. I almost couldn't continue reading due to his incessant crying about everything under the sun. & I'd like to add, it's incredibly alarming that there are people like the killer running around with that exact line of thinking.
This was one wild ride for sure. Started as a revenge against students and I couldn’t help myself but want the main character to cause at least a little more damage. Overall good story, moved quick, kills were bloody and believable.
Absolutely loved reading about the teacher’s defeat in the beginning, causing him to flip out and go on a crazy-ass rampage. Reminds me of the Douglas performance in “Falling Down.” The grammatical quips were hilarious as well. Kindle edition is still $0.99. Buy this shit!
I’m glad I gave this novel a shot. It is entertaining, tense, and fast-paced. The characters are well-written and it takes place in an interesting setting. Definitely a modern slasher must read.

One of the better horror novels I've read in awhile. I've read a few of Mauve's other books and this one doesn't disappoint. It moves along very quickly and has great atmosphere.
It was a really good book! The murder scenes were filled with gore just how I liked them but I wish I didn’t know who the murderer was only a few pages into the book.
Great read, easy to follow but predictable at some parts. Should definitely come with trigger warnings. I was rooting for the students to be more honest.
I'm not going to lie, but if I were Mr. Blackwood, I probably would've snapped years before he did. So if you're a teacher or you hate your coworkers, you may want to read this book
