Hank is an “obnoxious” goose. He really is! But he’s trying to change. Hank is trying to HONK less, listen more, and stop popping other people’s balloons. It’s hard to change though. With effort, forgiving friends, and determination, Hank might just get there. Balloons are very “poppable” though.

There are some big sized words here like—obnoxious and considerate—that made me pause. Are they too much for young readers? Maybe. I like that Hank is teaching kids about manners and consequences. Maybe readers can learn the meaning of the words right along with Hank.

We all have to keep trying to get along. I just think Hank needs a bit more time. Keep trying, Hank!

I had fun here. It's a very fun story to read. Hank’s side eye is one of the best in print. :)

Hank the goose doesn’t just go honk: He interrupts, hordes the goodies and provides lessons on how not to be obnoxious in general. Author Maudie Powell-Tuck and illustrator Duncan Beedie combine to make a most delightful book to teach youngsters polite behavior.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Publisher Spotlight and Tiger Tales in exchange for an honest review.

Listen, idk if Stella liked me honking at her as much as I had fun honking at her. But this was great.

Helps that my husbands best friends name is Hank so picturing him as a goose was even better

Hank Goes Honk is a funny and heartwarming story about a very rude goose who learns an important lesson. Hank doesn’t think twice about being loud, grabbing what’s not his, or interrupting others, but soon, he realizes that BEING OBNOXIOUS can leave you feeling pretty LONELY.

With bright, playful illustrations and a relatable message, this book is a great way to introduce young readers to the importance of friendship, kindness and thinking about other people’s feelings. Hank may start off as a troublemaker, but his journey toward becoming more considerate is both funny and sweet.

Although it’s marketed for kids aged 3 to 7, I honestly think Hank Goes Honk carries lessons that even adults need to be reminded of. The themes of empathy, self-awareness and being considerate aren’t just for children, they’re life skills we all can continue to grow.

Perfect for read alouds, classroom discussions or just a gentle nudge for the loudest person in the room, Hank Goes Honk is a delightful reminder that kindness matters at any age. :D

Am I the only one that started feeling sorry for Hank?
The bunny with the balloon is sweet as is all the other critters that join in with the adventures.

I adored this beautifully illustrated picture book about an annoying goose named Hank! This book is funny with colorful imagery and a perfectly unlikeable main character who teaches young readers the importance of being considerate to others in an easy to read and relatable way. Parents and children alike are sure to enjoy reading this one. Highly recommended, especially for fans of The Pigeon books by Mo WIllems. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

My favorite element of this book is how big words get defined for the reader. I know kiddos that will appreciate that. As to the not having friends because you are a bully.....I like other books way better for that messaging

HANK GOES HONK is a colorful picture book about manners and being kind. Hank is a goose who is labeled obnoxious due to the behaviors he does, such as interrupting others, only talking about himself, and popping other people's balloons. Hank begins to realize that this is making him lonely, so he decides to change, and he begins to be kind to others, which works well until he sees a balloon and pops it. He blows a new balloon for bunny - but will he pop it?

What I loved: This uses a narrative flow of the book being spoken to the reader that will work well for preschoolers and early elementary school readers. Hank's poor behaviors are clear, spelled out and described as well as the consequences of these poor behaviors - such as no one wanting to play with him. The story then goes on to show how this can be corrected by being kind, changing his fortune over time. This sort of example is great for young readers who can follow along with the laid out problem, consequences, and also the solution.

The illustrations are very vivid and colorful with cartoonish animals that steal each scene. Some word art adds to the story with the loud HONKs coming across visually where they appear. The font was clear and easy to read throughout, making it a good pick for reading aloud.

As a note, the book does not end definitively with the text asking Hank whether he is going to pop the new balloon without an answer (he is just staring at it). The interpretation is left up to the reader, which some young ones may like more than others.

Final verdict: HANK GOES HONK is a colorful picture book about learning to be kind and make friends that will work well for preschoolers and early elementary school aged readers.

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Children's literature is filled with animal characters who don't always behave at their best, allowing young readers to recognize themselves and others as well as some of their behaviors that might be problematic but doing so with humor and little judgment. In the case of this picture book featuring bright colors, large fonts with repeated sounds that almost blare off the page ["HONK HONKHOOOONK! HONKETY HONK," for instance], Hank with his adorable earflap hat is a rather obnoxious, loud, careless, self-absorbed goose. He interrupts others--a habit that is demonstrated right in the middle of the narrative--and behaves rudely, swiping the cherries from the tops of cupcakes, pecking book pages, and bursting balloons. Clearly, all this behavior has consequences, and Hank finds himself being shunned by the other animals. On his own, he decides to make some changes, and for the most part, he improves. But Rome wasn't built in a day, and despite immersing himself in a book entitled "How to Be an Im-PECKABLE Goose, Hank just can't resist a couple of his bad habits, shown in vivid full-page illustrations, one of which consists of those pecking actions of this goose and bits of a book's pages, all littered across a red background while Hank busily reverts to his former ways. The other animals forgive him, holding their breaths as he gives a new balloon to Bunny. The final double-page spread showing the balloon and Hank's face up close make it clear that Hank still has some work to do. This one is perfect for sharing with others, but they may not recognize their own annoying behavior in Hank.

Hank interrupts (HONK) everybody.
So if I tell you a really great story about a (HONK)
and a (HOOONK!)
You won't hear a (HONKETY HONK) word.

Do you know anyone like Hank? Kids will see many a trait of a terrible friend in the Before Hank. Being that obnoxious can make for one lonely goose. So Hank picks up a copy of "How to be an In-PECK-able Goose" and gets to work. He makes progress and I love the little motivational sticky notes on his bathroom mirror that say things like "Inhale HONKS Exhale HUGS" and "Less HONKING More HEALING." It isn't easy, but kids will be wanting to high five the new Hank. Well, until he gives in to that urge to pop Bunny's balloon. . . Try again, Hank. You can do it!

Thank you to NetGalley and Publisher Spotlight for my copy of this book!

Hank is grumpy goose (unsure if I've ever met a happy goose, but I've definitely met a few silly geese (every time I look in the mirror)). When he realizes his anger is hurting potential friends, he endeavors to behave better!

This book was so funny! I started reading it and immediately knew it would be PERFECT for Story Time with toddlers who love silly books with loud noises, and pre-schoolers who benefit from stories about good behavior. I'd also recommend this book to a parent looking for books on anger management or ADHD symptoms.

This picture book has bright, bold illustrations and a simple storyline related to an "obnoxious" goose who constantly interrupts, pops people's balloons, and generally makes a nuisance of himself. Although this book teaches about manners and good behavior through this negative example, it mainly plays the goose's behavior for laughs and ends on an ambiguous note. Although kids might find this funny, it wouldn't necessarily be the most helpful teaching tool for an adult looking to correct a child's behavior.

I received a temporary digital copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This book is funny and will be funny no matter who you share it with and what age they are. Hank is a honkingly rude goose who interrupts and pecks and pops, so rude that he’s become isolated and lonely. As we all go about our work of reflection and reimagination and reinvention so goes Hank trying to change and like so many of us Hank may need to take a deep breath and try even harder. Graphic layouts brilliant and bold in bright, pleasing hues march and hop and pop through Hank’s transgressions and lead us right to a moral cliffhanger, one that our littles will be only too willing to fill in the big blank with their own preferred surprise ending.

We had a lesson today on taking risks and being okay with making mistakes. Our YDC taught the lesson and at the end of the lesson she has brought in two (boiled) eggs...although she didn't tell them they were boiled. She called out a name and tossed it to some kids. The first two caught them (and let out a BIG sigh of relief because they didn't know they were boiled). The last one dropped the egg and was embarrassed and we talked about how it was okay. It was a boiled egg and no harm done. Her relief was huge. We then talked about the things she could say to herself when she makes mistakes. It all seemed very real after feeling a little embarrassed and worried about the interaction.

Hank Goes Honk is a fun addition to the "bad" character trying to be good cannon. In this case, it is a goose who is obnoxious. With humor, Powell-Tuck demonstrates how selfish behaviour ultimately makes one lonely and how support is available to those who try to change. Obviously instructional, Hank Goes Honk adds fun to a lesson on consideration of others. And Beedie's illustrations are so expressive - it's worth your kiddos looking at the book for the pictures alone! If you liked The Bad Seed, you'll want to read Hank Goes Honk.

Hank is such an adorable goose. When we see him, we can’t predict that he will be this rude and inconsiderate. He interrupts others and behaves rudely all the time. This would certainly make Hank lonely since others would start disliking him! Now, how can he make friends?

Kids and adults can very well relate to this topic. Nobody is perfect, but changes are not impossible.

Illustrations support this story beautifully well and make this story come alive.

Perfect for ages 3+

I think we've all known Hanks in our lives . . . rude, self-obsessed people (or geese) who can't stop talking about themselves, and have seemingly no regard for others. Sometimes the Hanks of this world can see the error of their ways, and make an effort to change.

You may not like Hank much in this story, but you'll probably be rooting for him by the end of the book. With cute illustrations by Duncan Beedie.

Thanks to NetGalley and TigerTales for sharing.

Hank is one rude goose! He is always interrupting his friends, stealing their food, and popping their balloons. But being so unruly is kind of lonely, especially when people don’t want to hang out anymore. Can Hank learn to be kinder to his friends?

Children will love Hank’s antics and silly sounds, and adults will love the overall message about kindness and friendship. It’s a great book to teach essential soft skills like communication and cooperation. I highly recommend it if you can get it.

Hysterical book about a goose being, well, a goose. He honks and pecks everything. This does not help him make friends in his community, though. Hank is lonely and willing to change his obnoxious habits to create a more compassionate friend. Change is imperfect, but trying matters so much!

I will buy this book for both of my school libraries. Any book that makes me pour over the illustrations for details that are not tied to the story and seem especially meant for the adult reader, is a win for me! Thank you, Maudie Powell-Truck and Duncan Beedie for this gift!

Hank is an impatient, obnoxious, and rude goose. After he upsets almost everybody, Hank takes a deep breath and tries to start over. Can it last? I like the ambiguous ending. Could work for a small preschool storytime or an offsite one. Could lead to a song about silly animals, like The Laurie Berkner Band's "The Goldfish" or a rhyme, like "Put Your Hands Up High." It might be fun to try reading the book while holding a goose puppet to make Hank come to life. Only if you had a stand to rest the book on.

I LOVED Hank Goes Honk! This adorable picture book follows an obnoxious goose who often interrupts with a loud HONK! The illustrations are perfect and Hank absolutely made me love him. I really liked the text in this book. It had a great rhythm and the multitude of loud honks is sure to delight kiddos.

Put this on both the secret reader shelf and the storytime shelf although I would not suggest them for either unless you want to address the issue of being obnoxious(author's choice of word, not mine). As an issue book it has a relatable story line with good illustrations to support the text. If parents, caregivers, and/or teachers are looking for help with constant interruptions and unintentional rude behavior, this might be a good choice.

Hank, the goose, has bad habits with interactions with other animal friends and is lonely. Will Hank change and how will he try to change? This title is perfect for story time or to instruct in a subtle way a new school class that is having some behavior issues. Fun way to learn human interaction skills. Hank Goes Honk was published first in Great Britain in 2024 and then in the United States also in 2024.
Looking forward to seeing Hank in two more titles to be published in 2025.

Very rarely does a picture book make me laugh out loud on first reading. Usually I need to be reading it to giggling children for the book to get me laughing too. Hank Goes Honk is hilarious all on its own! Too funny! I love that it talks about obnoxious behavior and how hard it can be to change your actions. I love that it’s interactive with very funny illustrations. This would be an incredible readaloud. ❤️

Both my two children and I really enjoyed "Hank Goes Honk"!

The illustrations really made the stop come alive right off the pages.
Creative and relatable, we all enjoyed Hank's complications with interuppting others when going HONK!
I also loved how my children continued the conversation about the books message well after we finished reading this title.

Hank Goes Honk was a super funny read ahha. My daughter was laughing out loud and so was I. Then we got to honk around for a bit haha. I was hoping this book would help my daughter understand that it’s rude to interrupt, spoiler she doesn’t care.the illustrations were bright and engaging.
I would recommend this books to everyone.
