Rate this book
Garfield’s back in this brand-new full-color compilation comic strip book—truly a must-have for fans!

While Garfield is best known for his insatiable appetite for lasagne, he also believes in voraciously eating “hole” foods! In fact, making donuts disappear might just be Garfield’s superpower (along with taking marathon naps). Fans of the fat cat won't want to be disturbed as they happily devour this latest batch of scrumptious comics.

James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.

Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.

Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.

Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.

Garfield’s 76th book, Donut Disturb, is just as clever, heartwarming, and relatable as all the books to precede it. My partner and I have read every single Garfield strip, and my tween is now reading her way through the Garfield books (she’s on no. 25).

We are Garfield stans, and for good reason: he’s lovable, says what we’re all really thinking, and is the best (and worst) of cats. The supporting characters, Jon, Odie, Nermal, POOKY, and more, are integral to Garfield’s love and our love of it.

I’m abundantly thankful to have known Garfield my entire life and to get to introduce my kids to him through books and film. If you’re a cat person and looking to add a bright light to your life, pick up any Garfield book and spend an hour reading it. Your heart will be happier having done so!

A collection of comics featuring Garfield, Odie, Jon, Liz, Arlene, and others.

There are a few more donut comics than usual in this collection, which I think is what prompted the title. There's also an extra funny series of comics right around Garfield's birthday about getting old. Otherwise, it is the typical, entertaining collection of humorous bits with Garfield and his community.

Notes on content:
Language: None
Sexual content: Garfield and Arlene meet for dates, but they just talk about food. Liz and Jon talk about going on dates but he usually says something goofy. It isn't mushy, really.
Violence: Garfield keeps smashing a spider, but it never dies.
Ethnic diversity: Mostly animal characters, the few humans are white.
LGBTQ+ content: None specified
Other: Constant jokes about eating too much, not exercising, and failed diets.

For some reason I keep hoping that Garfield is still funny. He's not, particularly. Here's my review of Easy as Pie (his 69th) book. It pretty much applies to this 76th book as well, although this one did have a few nice updated touches: the characters use smart phones, Jon has a girlfriend (and is not always a hopeless tool), etc. But overall, really skippable.

It is such a benefit book I loved it so much, it brought me so much joy and happiness. This book is the best book I've ever read before and the joke on the cover is funny. I had donuts this morning so that's why it's also pretty high too.

I hadn’t read Garfield cartoons in years, since the newspaper. Thumbing through this book was a nice bit of nostalgia, but don’t get me wrong—it stands on its own, too.

Highly enjoyable to thumb through casually.

pookie's mom is a sheep, Odie ties Garfield's tail in a knot, the dog gives barking lessons, Garfield surprises everyone at his own surprise party, and Jon forgets the charcoal in his grill.
