A Gift of Death

Rate this book
A Gift of Death, is on tour. The three band members, Sarin, Vee-Exx, and Arsenic travel the country playing their dark brand of music for screaming fans. Their violent lyrics and goth style draw people to them. But, something else is drawing people to the mysterious trio...something sinister. They feed off the energy of the crowd, but desire something more: blood.

Cameron Snyder is an outcast. His love of death metal, extreme horror and his home life have left him on the fringes of high school society. When a prank goes too far, Cameron decides he's had enough. A relic of his dead father calls to him; a Colt 1911 handgun. He knows his life is not worth living, but can there be salvation? He then discovers a secret involving one of his favorite bands. A secret that could lead to immortality... or death.

Nestor and Cyril Visser run a private investigation business. A man shows up one day with a strange request, a deep knowledge of their past, and unlimited money. His request: find his son's killers and execute them. There's a catch though, he thinks the killers are vampires.

A Gift of Death combines heavy metal, revenge and bloodshed galore.

I went into this one blind. And when I say blind, I mean I didn’t know anything except that it was written by Daniel Volpe. No cover, no blurb, nothing.

In hindsight, this might have been a good thing. I am not a huge fan of the vampire genre – the stories became so bogged down into teen romance, it was sickening. This gives me a very natural knee-jerk reaction of not really wanting to read books about the blood-sucking V’s.

But, every now and then, a story comes along that is just so damn good, especially when Nosferatu becomes a cold, heartless monster of the highest degree, that it is 100% worth the read. Daniel Volpe has exceeded – hats off to you – all my expectations in this one.
*****
A Gift of Death (AGOD) is a death metal band with three members:
Sarin, the lead singer, Vee-Exx on guitar and Arsenic on the drums. And, for an Indie band, they are top notch…might it be because they’ve had some time to practice, you think?

Cameron Snyder is an outcast. Not the good kind, mind you…like a John Travolta in GREASE. (I am truly sorry for this analogy, but at the start of this review I challenged myself to use a totally PG movie in this extreme horror review – so, there you go.)
Cameron is at the end of his rope and he wants his life to end. At least, the life he has been living so far. And he might just know about a way to achieve it – knowledge is power, after all.

Nestor and Cyril Visser are Dicks. Professionally, as in Private Investigators. Personally, as in assholes. Will they have what it takes, though, when somebody offers them a large amount of money to kill vampires?
*****

Not since DRACULAS with Strand, Crouch, Konrath and Wilson, have I been blown away by a bloodsucker book as much as this. Add the elements of heavy metal, revenge and a gore fest of the highest degree, and you’ve got an extreme horror worth reading.

I’ve been reading this author’s rise in 2021, starting with BILLY SILVER, and it is my opinion that this is his best work to date. While he eased up on the sex descriptions – don’t get me wrong, they are still there and still very descriptive – I think he got the balance right.

Yes, yes, yes – horror readers should get their copy as soon as possible, because this one is worth the time and money.

This is a book about a metal band named A Gift of Death. What is so special about it? Well two of the band's members are more than human. Besides there are Cyril and Nestor, two private dicks with some nasty habits and a long family tradition. Cameron has a troubled life at home and in school. What is the connection between all those characters? The author comes up with an extreme modern horror tale that was very compelling and page turning. I also liked the twist at the end. Well done tale that reads like a movie. Beware strong language, devouring sex scenes and outright horror eating your heart out. Really recommended!

This was a lot of fun. While not a long adventure, it was well paced, graphic, and the ending was not what I expected at all, but very satisfying. The characters were all unique, fleshed out, and kept you guessing with each passing chapter. Each scene was written to make you feel the full effect of the immediate situation, as if you were standing there as an onlooker. The vivid details during the more intimate and horrifying scenes were also done very well, too. My only critique here is that some of the descriptions of the vampires became a bit repetitive, but overall, I really had a really good time with this story.

A Gift Of Death is an extreme metal band, consisting of two vampires and their familiar.

They travel across the country doing shows, feeding, and fucking.

They leave a trail of bodies on their way and one of them just happens to be related to a guy who figures out they're vampires and gets in contact with two ex-vampire hunters who are brought back into the game due to a massive payout.

They're on the vampires trail...

There's way more to it than that but that's all I'll say, just go read it.

It's not your typical vampire story.

If you're into horror, you need to give this a try, it's so much fun!

Twisted Ride Into A Vampire Lair!

Backstory:

Cameron Snyder has a bad life and it seems that everything is spiraling out of control but the only thing that keeps him going is wanting to see the heavy metal band, A Gift of Death, in person and he will do anything to see them. When Cameron follows the band after a concert he spies on them finding out that they are not all what they seem and it makes him want to actually hook up with them and leave his life behind.

The metal band have unique tastes as they lure certain concert goers into their van for a night of blood and mayhem as they need to feed, but what they don't know is that there are vampire hunters on their trail (the Visser brothers) and when the Vissers' catch up to them it will be survival of the fittest!

That is about all I can give on a backstory as if you want to know more you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This is my first time reading this author and I can say that I was quite impressed with not only the story but the writing style. This book was soaked in blood and lots of graphic detailed carnage of the vampires feasting on their human prey! Lots of erotic horror mixed in with all the vampire action as well.

I definitely needed my gore suit for this book as there was so much splatter that it is wonder my kindle wasn't leaking blood and gore bits! The vamp action was fast paced and once things started happening with Cameron, the metal band, and the vampire hunters with all of them converging in the storyline this book exploded with action which kept me awake as I was wanting to see what would happen next!

Looking forward to stepping into more of this author's work as he has quite a few books out there to check out. Giving this book four "Vicious Vampire" stars!

A GIFT OF DEATH [SARIN TRILOGY BOOK 1] [2023] By Daniel J. Volpe
My Review 5.0 Stars Out Of 5.0 Stars

I likely bought this copy of Volpe’s work sooner rather than later because the cover art was so colorful (later I would think aha “psychedelic vampire”). The thing is Cover Art is a consumer seducer older than I am (egad!) but I have found that Daniel J. Volpe is always good for that gamble.

First, I liked the Chapters 1 – 12 and more specifically the chapter designations. Each chapter in effect told its own story. Chapter 1 A Rose of Red and White performed “double-duty” I thought. It provided a glimpse into what the novel “A Gift of Death” was about, and secondly it showed you in no uncertain terms what the dynamics of the book were all about in brilliant colors of crimson and gushing currents of red blood and gore.

We are introduced to Trina whose best friend Kathy had bailed on her for the concert. Her favorite band was getting their first headliner and Trina thought the lead singer Billy Silver was hot. Oh Jeez, that only reminded me I have not read “Billy Silver” yet! No excuse.

An unexpected band was announced by the MC and the lead singer Sarin announced their name to the audience…” A Gift of Death.” A second girl on the guitar was introduced as Vee (short for Vee-Exx), and the boy on the drums was named “Arsenic” but Sarin added, “We just call him Nic.” Trina discovered that she was unexplainable sexually attracted to Sarin, the lead singer, in a big way to the extent she started to question her own preference for boys. Trina found herself near to the black camper outside after she left the venue. It was just in front of her car and the sexy drummer was languishing against the side of the mysterious black camper smoking a cigarette and toying with his phone laughing. Nic told her that Sarin had taken a liking to her and Trina was soon in the black camper meeting the band members. She did not know that in a few minutes she would experience intense ecstasy quickly followed by her life’s blood pouring out of her like a crimson river as she died.

In the aforementioned chapter I know I rendered it as kind of tame (shucks! A WHOLE lot tame), but Volpe fans reading this review know exactly how that “ménage a trios” went down and I am not talking about Heavy Metal. You know how Amazon downloads Samples? And if you like it, you are hitting the “By Now” button. In this case do not bother, believe me this is a read you want to read!

Chapter Two is titled “One of Them” and it tells the gut-wrenching tale of a young guy named Cameron Snyder who took the Graduate Course in the “School of Hard-Knocks.” I felt so sorry for him I felt like stroking him like one of my beloved cats and giving him a saucer of milk. He was bullied, mistreated, maligned, and looked upon like a piece of garbage by family (that is a joke), schoolmates, girls, and even strangers like crud on their shoes. He loves gore and Heavy Metal so happenstance places him in close proximity to the black camper when it is stopped in a lonely spot. It transports his new favorite band “A Gift of Death”. It is just luck or maybe someone is looking out for Cameron down there but he peeks in the camper and in one “freeze action shot” embedded on the back of his retinas he knows that they are vampires and were feeding.

Chapter 3 was titled When in Rome (and that really is a kind of double-endendre or play on words (Daniel, you clever boy!) but disgusting enough I do not want to write a word about it. The chapter introduces two brothers, sociopaths who are without a human bit of DNA. Cyril Visser and Nester Visser are both contemptuous, but Nester edges his brother out as even less human due to cheating a poor whore and that “When in Rome” reference. The reader is left wondering where these two “frankfurters” are going to fit in to the story line.

Chapter 4 is “Fish Food” which is about a bit of clean up of something that needs to go. In the talented hands of Volpe, it is well worth the pages, and he really does it justice.

Chapter 5 “Pay Day” is about our two favorite disgusting brothers from “When in Rome” (the Visser Boys playing P.I.). They are approached by a benefactor to annihilate “The Gift of Love” notably the two female vampires Sarin and Vee. Surprise! The Visser Boys have Vampire Slaying in their bloodlines. Oh No!!! you screech to yourself!!! They wouldn’t! They couldn’t! No hints from me. I am in the vampire camp, though. But that is not a hint because you already gleaned that, I am positive.

Chapter 6 takes us back to Cameron in “Nickle Plated Death”. A terrible “trick” as in life altering was done to him by the one girl who was civil to him. I should say the entire domino effect could not have been accomplished without her. Cameron is left with no place, home, school, town, etc. that he can even hold up his head. He makes plans to kill himself.

Chapter 7 “Bone Saw” elevates the novel to another level in my opinion. Volpe provides the background information on Sarin and Vee, who were turned during the Civil War and The Roaring 20’s. Knowing their original names and in Sarin’s case her occupation and her experiences provided an enrichment of her character which tended to humanize. Okay, just a little for the hecklers out there.

Chapter 8 “The Trunk” I will say that the two brothers I love to hate are back and well, I am sure you can guess what they are up to at this time. So let us just move ahead.

Chapter 9 “The Hope They Give” In this chapter, Cameron who has left town to try to find the Heavy Metal Band finds where Vic has pulled over with the Black Camper with the girls. He and Vic meet, talk briefly, and separate. There is a surprise in this chapter which changes the complexion of the group.

Chapter 10 Granny Banger is primarily recounting the exploits of the Visser brothers. They are making plans to destroy the vampires, no surprise there.

Chapter 11 Last Meal The title refers to the downtrodden Cameron. A wary Nic holding a gun. An attack by the Visser Brothers on the vampires. Cameron was thinking that it was his last meal driving down the road. The girls were enjoying one of their female fans as though it was their last meal. This was the most tense, nerve-wracking chapters.

Chapter 12 A Gift Of Death The last chapter was simply great. I love you Volpe!!! It is not all good, as they say. But it rounded out a really terrific vampire tale for me.

Pat stood frozen, watching the woman rip his friends apart. He’d forgotten about Cameron standing in front of him. He turned and looked into the dead, black eyes of the boy he so loved to torment. His bowels and bladder voiding.
Cameron took in the fear-filled smell of piss and shit.
He smiled at his bully. With a mouthful of fangs.

These Vampire's don't sparkle..

I'm always on the look out for blood sucker books that is more in tone with vampire movies of the 80s/90s and this book does have that certain feel too it.
Tho not lost boys on bikes in Santa Cruz, more lost girls in a heavy-metal band with a human guy drummer, who drive across the country in a blacked out van, playing gigs and preying for young pretty girls offering them a different kind of candy. The seducing kind, which ends up in a blood lust feeding frenzy and a deadly orgy.
Then following the band, add a high school unloved bullied virginal fan with a gun. Dumb & dumber the hitmen brothers who will also hunt a vampire or two and you kind of have the gist of this book.
Plenty of blood, some humor and sexual depraved moments.

I freakin loved this book! The death metal vampire band, the desperate teenager, and the two nasty private investigators made for a gritty story filled with blood. I especially appreciated the look back at the turning of the lead vampire Sarine, that was awesome! Just a great read all around and I'm hoping for more AGOD in the future! 5/5 fanged skulls 🖤💀

Well, Daniel Volpe has done it again.

I have officially read all four of Daniel’s novellas now and I’m blown away by his talent. Somehow, in each one he has a different writing voice and I’m fucking here for it.

In The Gift of Death, he interweaves six characters lives into a seamless story of lust, revenge, and want of acceptance. Even though the characters are extremely and disgustingly flawed, he makes each one human (ha) and the reader can’t help but feel for them. Cameron wants acceptance, Nestor and Cyril want a better life after death comes for a loved one, Nic just wants to live and have as much sex as possible, while Vee-Hex and Sarin have their own tragic backstory to deal with.

I thought Talia was my favorite but nope. I have a new one. Keep your eyes on this emerging author.

El Don de la muerte es como un tiro: rápido, sangriento, letal. Antes de que te des cuenta, te lo has terminado y tú has acabado cubierta de sangre. Y sonriendo.

I freaking love a good underdog story, while there is vampires and monsters here the heart of the novel is a poor rough livin kid that just wants something to go better. His mother is a waste of space literally… and he’s bullied by the typical high school limp-dicked bullies.

On the flip side, (if I wasn’t already smitten with Talia 😻don’t judge me) Sarin is super sexy, along with her partner Vee and drummer Nic, they travel across country rocking out leaving gore and corpses in their wake.

There’s also the retired monster hunters, who were interesting characters, that’s all I’ll say about that. (Coughs *the fetishes* coughs)

(I do wonder if Lance Beauregard was a nod to a certain person…. But he was a douche canoe, spoiler he died… )

Long ramble short… really enjoyed this book, was equal parts raw emotion and viscera.

Haha I give this one ten bloody tampons.

Daniel Volpe takes a well-aimed stab at contemporary vampires while serving up multiple memorable characters in a clever take on some naughty nosferatu hunting in plain sight. A roving metal band whose music you can almost hear blaring out of the book, Volpe's Sarina and Vee are as vicious as they are voluptuous, leaving a trail of discarded groupies behind without so much as an autograph or the proper amount of blood left for a pulse. Along with a couple of overpriced and horny Van Helsings hot on their tail and an angsty high schooler who's hoping to go out in a blaze of gory, this is one tour well worth the price of a ticket. Volpe's knack for painting with words ushers you through the doors of sticky-floored, sweat-smelling, beer-drenched concert venues as if you're holding a VIP pass, with a perfectly-paced mashup of monsters and metal that really rocks.

I’ve been waiting for this book ever since Daniel first announced it and it lives up to my expectations. The opening chapter was a whirlwind of emotions for me, making me feel nostalgic for the days I used to go to metal concerts, to disgust at some of the acts that happen in the first act. A Gift of Death is as entertaining as all of his other books, and is so hard to put down. Daniel is a wizard at creating memorable characters and it always amazes me. It takes a lot of talent to flesh out 6 characters while still being novella length, but I felt like I really knew each of them by the end of the book. If you’re a fan of vampires, metal, or fantastic storytelling, this is the book for you!

This is the first book I've read by this author and it definitely will not be the last, it gripped me from the first page to the very last I couldn't put it down until I found out what the outcome was, I even stayed up late to finish it.

This book is horrific, graphic and plenty of gore for the avid horror readers delight. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book is not for the faint of heart though be warned.

I hadn't read a book about vampires for a long time and what a vampiric delight of horrors this was, and it won't be the last book I'll read by this author too.

Fantastic read!!!!

A VERY dark tale.

I enjoyed this one, even though there was a bit too much erotica for my tastes.
Vampires have sucked for way too long, Daniel Volpe fixes that. Sparkles and romance are replaced by savage brutality and filth. There were a few too many character arcs for the length of the novella, and It felt a bit short as a result. A good book overall though. Recommended.

Great read

I really enjoyed this read, it was thoroughly enjoyed, filled with captivating characters, my favourite being cameron. Mainly because of the bullies that tortured him through school, and him having such a hard life at home on top of that. But he was a bold character, that made his mind up eventually and went full steam ahead to get what he wanted. I was proud of hi m, if you can be proud of a fictional character. I hate when people look down on others for no reason. Anyway the book had a great storyline that kept you entertained and captivated with every turn of the page. Lots of blood and gore with a tantalising amount of sex mixed in. Also had a few surprises along the way too. I'd definitely recommend.

Wanting to broaden my horror horizons, and despite being something of a wimp, I grabbed hold of this one. My initial misgivings were confirmed quite early on after a certain scene with a lady in a motel but once we got that out of the way, the rest was just pure fun! Loved the way the story builds to its climax with all the different characters and our gory vampires-no messing about with these, either; vampires, as vampires should be-and finished this one quickly over a couple of days. Looking forward to reading more along the same lines (unless they contain scenes of Emotophilia, of course...)!!
