Can't Help Falling in Love: A Novel

Rate this book
A struggling waitress and the heir to a major Seattle company stumble into a high-profile fake engagement while simultaneously trying to keep up with their own love lives in this flirty fall rom-com!

Lexi Danby is looking for some no-strings, fall fun. Once a college track star, she was forced to drop out when her father passed away. Now she’s trying to make ends meet while putting herself through school and caring for her grieving mother. When her comically bad waitressing lands her directly in the path of a handsome, charming stranger named Will, Lexi may just have found the distraction she’s been looking for. Their first date looks promising until a misunderstanding at a party thrusts Lexi and Will into a fake engagement they can’t talk themselves out of. And Will turns out to be a member of Seattle royalty.

Will Grand is heir to a major company, and Seattle’s most eligible bachelor. But he’s been placed in charge of an important merger with a company that values family above all else, and needs to show them that he’s settled down. While a fake engagement is advantageous from a business standpoint, it’s not so great for a budding relationship with a woman who’s wary of commitment. With a woman who Will is beginning to care about much more than he could have anticipated.

As Lexi gets a taste of Will’s glamorous world and the pair keeps up the pretense of their fake engagement for the press, they decide to see where a more casual relationship takes them out of the spotlight. And amid apple picking in comfy flannels, outdoor breweries in the crisp air, and fun Halloween preparations, Lexi starts to realize the scariest part of the season might just be taking a chance on love.

Once again, Sophie Sullivan has crafted another delightful, heartfelt romance, blending the tropes of fake dating, meet-cute, and friends-to-lovers, all set against the backdrop of Seattle. The story revolves around the endearing duo of Lexi and Will, who come from vastly different backgrounds, lending the narrative a touch of Cinderella-esque charm. But fear not, for Lexi is no damsel in distress; she's a tough, determined heroine with a heart of gold, always putting others' needs before her own and doing her utmost to stand her ground and survive without seeking help.

Lexi Danby's journey begins when she reluctantly drops out of college, her promising future as a track star eclipsed by the sudden loss of her father and the mountain of debt and bankruptcies he leaves behind. As the sole breadwinner, Lexi juggles two jobs while also caring for her grieving mother, putting her dreams on hold to keep their heads above water.

One of Lexi's jobs is waitressing, a role she may not excel at, but she gives it her all nonetheless. Fate intervenes when she serves a charming stranger—Will—who maintains his smile even after she spills soda on his book and botches his order. Little does she know, Will reappears to rescue her from an awkward encounter with her high school friends dining at the restaurant. With Will's help, Lexi pretends he's her boyfriend, leading to an invitation to an engagement party—a night of mischievous fun that Lexi sorely needs.

However, a minor misunderstanding during the party spirals into town-wide gossip when a newspaper column misinterprets Will and Lexi's relationship as an engagement. Lexi discovers that her fake date is none other than a member of Seattle's elite, a sought-after bachelor whose mother incessantly tries to set him up with socialite candidates. Now, Lexi must navigate the charade of dating Will to save face for both of them, shielding him from his mother's matchmaking while preserving her own reputation among her friends. But what begins as a pretense soon blossoms into something real, as sparks fly and Will's family begins to endorse their relationship. Can they defy social barriers and find their happily ever after, despite their relationship starting as a lie? Dive into this charming tale to find out—it's guaranteed to leave a big smile on your face and warm your heart, much like Sullivan's previous works.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press / St. Martin’s Griffin for providing me with a digital review copy of this sweet, swoon-worthy romance in exchange for my honest opinions.

Once I got past the ridiculousness of our main character's waiteressing abilities - I realized that I actually really liked her!! In any sweet story like this with two genuinely nice characters - it's easy to cheer them on even when they don't know they need cheering on yet!!

I also highly like the nuances of a relationship where one person has their life together and the other is still figuring things out. That style of relationship has the potential to quickly become a power struggle, but I really felt like they loved each other in the end and respected each other for their respective strengths!!

Early Thoughts:

Started reading this advanced reader copy and literally the first thing I could think of... how can anyone be THIS bad at serving tables? It's not rocket science, but listening to the main character, Lexi, is quite literally a train wreck - but I think it's also from losing every ounce of confidence in her life.

NOTES:
- Meet cute at a restaurant

**Thank you St. Martin’s Griffin for the advanced reader copy. All thoughts are my own. - SLR

Can’t Help Falling in Love by Sophie Sullivan
Contemporary romance. Fake relationship troupe. Closed door. Alternating POV.
Lexi Darby is determined and working toward her goals. She’s working a full time day job, going to college one class at at time with her degree only a couple classes away, and she’s trying to figure out the waitressing job she’s had for a few weeks. She’s had more disasters than success as a waitress but she’s trying. Lexi lives with her mother as they both recover from the loss of Lexi’s father and his surprising amount of debt left behind.
Will Grand is a busy CFO of the family business. When drops of liquid end up on his book by accident at the restaurant, he’s charmed by Lexi rather than upset. She’s clearly still learning the waitressing gig. Even getting the wrong sandwich is a sign to accept change in his routine. But when she sits at his table and tells a couple of women that there’re sharing everything including his soft drink, he realizes she’s hiding that she’s a waitress. Getting an invitation to a party, he helps get her out of the situation and they agree to a date. Having them announced at the event as an engaged couple wasn’t a big deal since he didn’t know anyone. He and Lexi had a great time and he hopes to see her again. When an announcement shows up in the paper saying Seattle’s most eligible bachelor is off the market, Lexi and Will let it stand as they deal with family and work and growing feelings for each other.

We all have bad days, good days and everything in between. Your life may not be as you expected or wanted. Know that everyone has their own stumbles and uncertainty, even if you don’t know about it.
A swoon worthy romance. He’s sweet and supportive. She makes him happy. They make each other laugh.
I highlighted a lot of phrases and thoughts from one or the other that resonated with me. The strongest reason to read - they made each other laugh.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

lexi and will were so sweet together, and i truly could not get enough of them!! “can't help falling in love” is the sweetest fall romance that will tug on your heartstrings and leave you laughing all the same. this was such a good take on the classic meet-cute, fake engagement trope—one of the best i’ve read in a long time! it was so refreshing to read about a fake engagement where the couple wasn’t at odds with each other, but instead focused on getting to know one another and letting their love grow naturally.

this story follows lexi danby, a former track star whose dreams were cut short by her father’s passing. juggling two jobs along with caring for her grieving mother doesn’t give lexi any time for love, let alone to think about it, until she meets will. a mishap at an untimely high school reunion/engagement party lands her in a relationship with seattle’s most eligible bachelor, and as lexi and will continue the ruse, their relationship evolves—maybe even into something like love?

i loved this book. it had such a refreshing storyline and was just honestly so sweet. the portrayal of both romance, along with grief and healing from losing someone you love, was so beautiful. i also absolutely adored all the side friendships throughout the story, as well as will’s dynamic with his sisters. i found myself rooting for lexi and will the entire time, and i wholeheartedly recommend this book for a good laugh (and cry) as well as to get yourself in the mood for fall!

this was my first sophie sullivan book, but definitely not my last! “can't help falling in love” comes out in just a few days, and i highly, highly recommend checking it out! a special thank you to netgalley and st. martin's press for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve read a lot of fake dating/fake engagement trope books up to now and it can be tough to find an author who can take that plot line and make it completely their own.

Sullivan has created a book that will not only stand out but stand on its own because of her great character development.

I have to say I completely fell for Will. He is just a sweetheart of a character. He is so swoony, loving, kind, and the chemistry between Lexi and him is off the charts.

I really did enjoy Lexi’s character as well. She’s strong and independent, almost to a fault, because by the end of the book, I was really annoyed with her. I wish the author had chosen a different route in terms of her stubborn, unwarranted end-of-story drama. It changed the whole vibe of the book for me.

However, Can’t Help Falling in Love gave me so many feelings. The story is fresh, unique, and so relatable in many ways. It’s a romance that is sweet, heartwarming, and memorable. Another winner for Sullivan and me!

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for giving me an early copy in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, I DNFed this book at 50%. However, I have read enough of it to provide appropriate feedback.

This book follows our two main characters, Lexi and Will, who find themselves in an awkward situation. Everyone thinks they're engaged! While Lexi works her second job as a waitress, a group of her old high school friends stop by. After seeing them for the first time in years, Lexi doesn't want them to think she has led an unsuccessful life. But after her friends mistake Will, a patron of the restaurant, for her hunky boyfriend, things spiral from there. With neither Will nor Lexi being in a place where they can have a long-term relationship, will these two crazy kids end up together or just as a one-time fling?

Let me start with the things I liked about the book.

-It's set in Seattle. That's cool. I, too, am a PNW girly, and I love Seattle. It's always fun to see it represented.
-I like Will's friends. They seem nice.

And that's it. I wish it wasn't, but there just was not enough in this book to keep my interest.

Moving into the dislikes.

-It was crazy to know that Lexi is in her late 20s and still obsessed with high school. Why would she care what these people think? There is literally a line in the book that says, "Maybe there is life after high school and heartbreak." I cackled when I read that because it is an insane thing for someone close to 30 to think. Lexi has been out of High school for almost a decade. I'm pretty sure most people stop thinking about it as soon as they graduate. This immediately makes her feel very childish and unsympathetic to me.

-When describing this book to people, I often say it feels like something I would read in High school and be super excited about. It just matches what a 16-year-old thinks about people in their late 20s. There's even a moment where one of her old friends talks about making partner at her law firm. PARTNER. OF A LAW FIRM. BEFORE 30. That's crazy and so unrealistic. A quick Google search confirms that making a partner happens much later. I know this is a small detail, but it really threw me.

-Now, I don't mind fake dating I would even say I enjoy it. But we can all admit that the way the couple enters fake dating is always a little cringe and contrived. Because how could it not be, right? People don't find themselves in fake dating relationships this often. So my one rule for the 'fake dating inciting incident' is that even if it's cringe, it has to be kind of silly and fun. This book fails at that pretty hard. It is only cringey. I cannot fathom why Lexi would not correct these people nor why Will would have any interest in this charade. The whole scene is uncomfortable and deeply unbelievable. If Will weren't a random stranger and maybe a regular that she occasionally flirted with or had some kind of repertoire with, it would make this scene a little better and more believable. But he's a complete stranger who's had his order messed up, and a drink spilled on him. In what world is this man going to bat for this woman?

-The two main characters have absolutely no chemistry. The banter is stilted and rarely funny. And every conversation these two had was roughly the same thing. Both character's inner thoughts were wildly repetitive.

-The escalation from fake dating to fake engagement was crazy. It felt like whiplash, and I could not figure out why her friends would have made that mistake when they first showed up at that party. There was nothing from their first meeting to suggest that these two people were engaged. Why would they think that? Better yet, why would Lexi and Will go with it? And WHY would they repeat the lie later? I cannot understand the logic of this book.

-Lexi and Will are way too into each other for people who barely know each other. Lexi is weirdly possessive, and Will is way too into it.

Outside of the above-listed things, there were several inconsistencies that I will chalk up to being an ARC, but I'll still mention them in case some of them were on purpose.

-When Lexi takes a fry from Will's plate, she describes it as tasking like sawdust, yet everyone ever in this book says the food at this restaurant is good. So why does the fry taste bad?

-When we first meet Lexi's mom, she refers to her as both mom and Gwen. This was so confusing that I thought a third person was in the room. She does this later in the book as well and I would highly advise the author to pick one and not have them both.

-When Will has his little sister over to the house, he offers her a bottle of water, but a couple of paragraphs later, a sentence says he took a sip of his pop. He is not drinking pop.

Overall, this book feels half-baked and lacks all of the charm needed to be a fun fake dating rom-com.

3.5 Stars- This was cute rom-com set in the fall in Seattle. Lexi's life has not gone as planned after the death of her father. She is working several jobs trying to make ends meet after finding out her father has lots of debt. Currently she has a second job as a waitress which she absolutely stinks at. While there she meets Will. There is an instant attraction but while serving him she meets a couple of former friends from high school. Feeling like a failure, her and Will pretend to have a relationship. Things spiral from there as Will is Seattle's most eligible bachelor and when Lexi and Will are seen together a rumor starts that they are engaged. Now both of them have to figure out how to get out of the lie except the feelings between them seem very real.

The beginning of the book had me laughing out loud and really enjoying the chemistry between Lexi and Will. As the book progressed it lost me a little as it delved more into their home life and relationships. Overall, it was enjoyable but just a little slower in the middle than I would have liked.

The most hilariously awkward meet cute opens this story! An initial misunderstanding results in a phony engagement that is publicized in the press, despite Lexi and Will being an odd couple to begin with. Despite their disparate histories and situations, the two decide to date while remaining publicly engaged.

Lexi and Will were so lovely together! You can see they're falling in love from their banter and dates. I adore the bond that eventually forms between Lexi and Will as well as how things turned out in the end! I loved the way they were pretending to be in love and then gradually began to develop a true relationship. They genuinely complemented one another, and their chemistry was obvious.

This book has the feel of a genuine love story. I felt it was really well written, and I liked how the novel dealt with such a difficult subject as mourning. The author's realistic and relatable portrayal of the characters and their worries in the writing is impressive.

Put this on your to-read list if you're searching for a charming, well-written romance that follows the tropes of a fake relationship that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy!

I read Sophie Sullivan's book: "How to Love your Neighbor" and since then I always wanted to read more from her. I think that her writing is stunning, it flows easily and her characters have been pretty relatable to me.

"Can't Help Falling in Love" is a cozy, friends to lovers with one of the most adorable meet cutes I have ever read about. That whole sequence at the beginning was so fun and made it even more easy to connect and care for both of our main characters.

I also appreciate the attention to detail when it came to the setting because I was able to picture almost every single description. This was a great fall romance read with a mix of humor, friends to lovers, marriage of convenience and kind of "insta-love" but not in a bad way. I think that Sullivan did a wonderful job balancing that initial spark between Lexi and Will, without making it seem like it was just attraction between them but rather genuine care and love for each other. It was so sweet seeing them taking the time to know each other.

Overall, I throughly enjoyed this!! It was very cute.

Can’t Help But Falling In Love is a super cute heartfelt romance that takes place in Seattle. I could definitely see this as a Hallmark movie. Lexi is a former track star whose dreams were derailed by personal tragedy. Now a waitress, she juggles multiple responsibilities: helping her grieving mother, managing debt left by her late father, and balancing work while finishing school. The story unfolds when a chance encounter with the charming Will sparks an unexpected and intriguing connection. The romance begins with a fake engagement that turns into a genuine relationship. This story is swoon worthy with themes of grief, healing, love, and second chances. Lexi's journey from heartbreak to hope is portrayed with depth and authenticity, making her eventual growth and the romance that blooms feel both gratifying and believable. It’s a very easy read, uplifting, and a little drama. Barely any spice maybe 1/2 🌶️ but you can feel the love between them. I would have liked more because of all the build up.

Sophie Sullivan has gifted readers with another fun, heartfelt romance that starts off with the most adorable meet-cute ever! Okay, spilling soup on the hot guy, Will, sitting at a table, reading a book may not be the best way to meet a guy, but it gets the conversation started! Can things get any worse? Yes, apparently they can when former track star Lexi tries to keep two old friends from finding out she’s working as a waitress and things go downhill fast!

Can’t Help Falling In Love revolves around the adorable duo of Lexi and Will - two vastly different people. While strong and determined, Lexi is barely making ends meet while caring for her mother, and she has major commitment issues. Will is at the top of his game – Seattle’s most eligible bachelor and the heir apparent of a major company and yet one of the sweetest, nicest, sexiest heroes ever! Will steps up in a big way for Lexi to help her save face. When news leaks that the couple is engaged, they decide to roll with it. Where will it lead them??

I like this one because it showed her struggling a lot. But trying to push through. Sometimes, it was a little annoying, it was like OK girl, get a grip already you're an adult. However, I really enjoyed his aspect and how he also was learning even though he, in his own way, seemed perfect. I loved their chemistry and how they went about things. Their fake engagement was a lot of fun. Overall, I think it was well, put together, and nice to listen to.

Can’t Help Falling in Love was a bland and boring millionaire (for lack of a better word) romance where the main characters fall in love within a day or two.

Both Lexi and Will are bland as characters.Lexi barely has her life together as she deals with the aftermath of her father’s passing and her mother’s breakdown. Will is looking to rebel against his mother’s romantic picks, but needs to focus on his family image.

The banter between Lexi and Will was decent and was a saving grace in this otherwise bland romance.

Instalove is the name of the game with Can’t Help Falling in Love. It was maybe a couple of days after their initial meet cute that they were professing their love for each other.

Spice level: closed door

Overall, Can’t Help Falling in Love was underwhelming, bland, and boring.

Book Title: Can't Help Falling in Love
Author: Sophie Sullivan
Format Read: E-book

Sophie Sullivan crafts a cozy fall romance that’s equal parts charming and heartfelt, with just the right amount of depth to keep you hooked.

Lexi Danby’s life hasn't turned out as planned since her days as a track star were cut short by her father’s passing. Now juggling school, a waitressing job, a retail job, and caring for her grieving mother, Lexi doesn't have time for love. But when a mishap at a party lands her in a fake engagement with Will Grand, a handsome customer who witnessed just how bad of a waitress she can be, Lexi finds herself navigating the complications of pretending to be part of his glamorous world. As they try to keep up the ruse, Lexi and Will’s relationship starts to evolve in unexpected ways, leaving them both to wonder if their fake engagement might lead to something real.

Likes:
•Lexi is incredibly relatable—her clumsy, down-to-earth nature paired with her resilience and playful banter make her a character you can’t help but root for.
•The story cleverly flips the fake dating trope by turning it into a fake fiancée, real dating scenario, which feels fresh and engaging.
•The exploration of grief, particularly Lexi’s struggle with losing her father and helping her mother heal, adds a touching layer of emotional depth.
•The autumnal settings, from apple picking to outdoor breweries, perfectly capture the cozy, seasonal vibe of the story.
•The humor in Will’s last name, "Grand," adds a fun touch, especially given his wealthy background.

Dislikes:
•Will, while charming, comes off as a bit flat—he’s almost too perfect, lacking the depth and complexity that would have made his character more compelling.

Can't Help Falling in Love is a delightful, cozy romance that’s perfect for fall. Lexi’s relatable journey, coupled with the fresh twist on the fake dating trope and the rich emotional undertones, made this a book I thoroughly enjoyed. It's a highly recommendable read, especially for those looking for a heartwarming story with a bit of depth. I’m definitely looking forward to exploring more of Sophie Sullivan’s work.

The most cutesy, happy, lovely romcom!

Lexi has had better days, but meeting Will Grand has her life looking up. When they get mistaken as being engaged on their first outing together, they just roll with it, not expecting it to matter. But then it’s in the papers the next day. Regardless, they still want to see where their relationship is headed.

I loved our characters, and the way thing were written. My only complaint has to be that there could’ve been just a little more conflict, to offer some believability. But hey, it’s a romcom and you definitely have a happy ever after feeling the whole time.

Thank you to the publisher for the gifted ARC

Fall is my favorite season, and this is definitely one of my favorite covers 🍁

This was my second Sophie Sullivan book, and I loved how she writes sweet characters that are easy to root for. Lexi and Will have an adorably funny meet-cute, and a misunderstanding leads to them faking an engagement.

Will was such a golden retriever MMC. Even though they were at different places in their careers, Will never made Lexi feel less-than and was always her biggest supporter.

I love interesting family dynamics in books, and this one definitely had that. The side characters added to the story and I’m hoping we get a second book featuring their love story 🤞

3.5 rounded up

A sweet, feel good fake engagement, opposites attract romcom that sees Lexi, a struggling waitress falling in insta love with Will, the heir to a wealthy Seattle family business.

This was fun, with a lot of emotional depth and whimsy as Lexi is trying to help her mom find away out of her depression over losing her dad as well as trying to figure out her own life after her competitive cross country running dreams got dashed.

I loved the family and friend side characters in this book and how irresistible Will and Lexi were as a couple, with Will consistently trying to build Lexi up and get her to see what a great person she really is. Good on audio and perfect for fans of authors like Sarah Adams. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

This may be Sullivan’s best work yet! I will admit, I had my doubts when I started the book, thinking it was playing a bit too hard into the tropes. But, it surprised me in the best way possible. Lexi is a flawed but lovable character, one that I emphasized so strongly with. The book is poignant and while it remains in the romcom category for the most part, it doesn’t shy away from the messiness of life that includes family issues, grief, and insecurity. I truly loved this book and I think it’ll stick with me for a long time.

2.5 stars. This was really boring. There wasn’t any depth to the story or its characters, and the romance had me rolling my eyes.

Not enough fall coziness, not enough Seattle (2 irrelevant mentions of Pike Place Market does not make it a “cozy fall Seattle romcom”).

The meet-cute is genuinely adorable—man reading in a bar? Say less. (Even if it was Sandra Brown, which is basically the literary equivalent of catching a hot guy at the farmer’s market only to realize his tote bag is full of iceberg lettuce. Technically food, technically reading.) Unfortunately, the rest of the book is like cotton candy at a county fair: bright, fluffy, vanishes the second you touch it, and leaves you sticky and vaguely annoyed you spent money on it.
There’s fake dating, sure, but it’s the least dramatic fake dating I’ve ever read. They decide to go with it, immediately decide they like each other for real, then… spend the whole book reminding themselves the engagement isn’t real which… babe, if you’ve known each other for five minutes, that shouldn’t be a hard distinction to hold onto.
Here’s the thing: I don’t need toxic chaos or deathbed confessions to stay engaged in a romance, but I do need something.
Mini qualm: Romance novel mentions that only exist through saying their mom or sister’s reading list (are they too cool to admit they actually read the genre they’re in?).
+also can we talk about the bath scene? No. We cannot. Because I don’t support two consenting adults simmering like stew in a medieval bacteria cauldron. I said what I said.
Bottom line: this isn’t swoony it’s saccharine, this isn’t rom-com, it’s rom-calm. And if I wanted calm, I’d do yoga instead of reading 300+ pages of beige.

Rounding up to 4.5 stars. This is the first book I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. This was my first Fall themed book this September and was such a perfect book for that. It had plenty of heart warming characters while still dealing with some complicated family dynamics. Would highly recommend this book!

Lexi + Will

Lexi is almost 26 years old. She's still living at home trying to help her mom to start living again - ever since her dad died things have been hard. Her mom. Her dad's debts. She has to work two jobs to afford the last few college classes and to get everything else paid.
And now here's Will. They had a really fun meet cute at the restaurant where she's trying to be a waitress.
And now they're kind of engaged. At least that's what the newspapers say and what family and friends think. Will might be a little famous in Seattle. He's the heir and CFO of a huge company and one of the city's most eligible bachelors. Until Lexi. Now that they're 'engaged' they want to start dating for real because the attraction is insane.
But it won't be easy starting things with a lie.... and with Lexi being so scared of love.

I really enjoyed reading this. It's my first Sophie Sullivan book ... and I liked it.
I love Seattle books and I love fall/autumn.
It was a sweet and funny and adorable love story with a great cast of friends and family and a super cute cover! READ IT!
