This was a good podcast style thriller that was an enjoyable read. It was laid out in an easy to read style that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Aimee was our morally gray main character, but man she has gone through a lot. The way this is written pulls at your heart strings, gives an origin story, if you will. You read this and sympathize with Aimee, but also think WTF Aimee?! Overall, a good read

Aimee had worked hard to blend into the background after a rough start to life. She has fought her way back from addiction, but now that is being tested. Some podcaster is digging into what happened during the camping trip with her fiancé and their two best friends. Her fiancé and her best friend went missing and are presumed dead, leaving Aimee and his best friend. The podcaster keeps asking, what would Aimee do. But the real question is what wouldn’t she do?

Thank you to Love Book Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

Short chapters and a compelling storyline make for a dangerous combination that will keep you up way past bedtime reading this thriller!

This is a fantastic concept for a thriller. It is fast-paced, and the different elements – podcast snippets, flashbacks, and differing POVs make it an intriguing read from start to finish. But it was a hard read for me, because it rubbed up against a few of the trigger warnings I tend to avoid. So, if that’s a thing for you, be sure to check them. It has some of the big ones in it, and they’re prominent, often, and early.

I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with both of our leading ladies in this book. They both had a morally grey thing going on, but I could also kind of understand where they were coming from to some extent. Seeing the story unfold from both of their perspectives was a really interesting experience. If you think you can handle the warnings, it would be something worth experiencing. The ending left me a little uncomfortable, but I also felt like maybe that was the goal. Honestly, I felt like maybe the whole thing was meant to make me feel uncomfortable like it was a social commentary, and I get that message loud and clear!

The twists and turns that got us to the end of this one were wild. I know lots of people that will love this – all my no-trigger friends!

Anyone who loves a good, twisty complicated thriller with podcasts, multiple POVs, timeline jumps, and more! It’s got great writing and a wonderful storyline, but some rough content warnings, so check them out!

Content Warnings: SA, SI, Murder, Death, Child Abuse (including SA), Incest, Kidnapping, Imprisonment, Infidelity, Betrayal, and Probably More

Aimee Dunn has a lot of problems. She has a dark past. In 2001, she went on a camping trip in the mountains with her boyfriend and a group of friends. What she didn’t bargain for was that her boyfriend and another girl would disappear. Never to be found again.

Skip forward to now, she is a recovering alcoholic and substance user. She has got her life back on track and is currently working as a carer.

Bea Yorke is a true crime podcaster who starts to dig into the mysterious disappearance of the two people in that ill-fated camping trip twenty-two years ago.

The past will come to haunt Aimee and Bea with disastrous consequences.

Now I must admit that I am by no means a crime afficionado, but I have read some. However, my knowledge of Scottish crime fiction is limited to Val McDermid and Ian Rankin, so this was a new one for me.

I have to say that I enjoyed this one. The story is set in Glasgow and Y.M. Miller really evokes the grit and grime of the city. I must say that she does not paint a pretty picture of Glasgow, carefully describing the disparity between the haves and the have nots.

I loved the characters in the book, particularly Aimee who is so grey that she is nearly black. She is a morally complex character that is shaped by both past events and what is happening now.

The plot itself goes to places that I did not expect, and whilst there are some of the familiar tropes associated with crime fiction, they are used well and merge seamlessly into the story.
After reading this book, I realised that I have Y.M. Miller’s other book, The Therapist and after reading this book, I will be reading The Therapist as soon as possible.

If you like your fiction dark, and with characters that border on darker side of grey, this is definitely a book for you.

This was one of those books that had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. Aimee was painted as a tragic character, which she was, but she was so much more. She was definitely a product of her upbringing. On one hand, in her job as a carer, she was kind, caring and patient. On the other. She was a psychopath, which becomes clearer as you read. Throughout the entire book there was the mystery of what happened to her fiancé and best friend who had mysteriously disappeared while on a camping trip twenty years earlier. Was Aimee responsible? When a podcaster becomes interested in the mystery and
is able to convince the police to reopen the case, secrets are revealed and all signs of seem to point to Aimee as the person responsible. However, Aimee has managed to hide herself away and can’t be found. There is such a huge twist (or two!) at the end of this book, especially as we finally get to see the ‘real’ Aimee. This book is expertly crafted with lots of little caveats to keep you turning the pages, dying to find out the truth. The setting of perhaps, the seedier side of Glasgow, is perfectly described and perfect for the story. The author has put a lot of heart and soul into the book and in doing so has created the most perfect of thrillers!

Wow… this book was DARK! Aimee had such a hard life and I loved the way the story switched between the different timelines to allow us to fully understand her. I really enjoyed the podcast take in this book and have enjoyed a few books like this recently and I think it’s a great aspect in a book! Bea was brilliant and I really liked listening to her POV and the podcast episodes.

I have always been drawn straight into books which are set in Scotland and this one being in Glasgow which is just up the road from me was definitely… interesting. I think the author captured the city to a T and I loved the Scottish slang coming through in the dialogue. There was a point where she even game me some flashbacks of my old Bergaus jacket 😅.

It’s very clear that Aimee is quite evil and twisted and I totally suspected her for everything, thinking I had it all figured out… I was wrong… I did not see that twist coming at the end at all!

The book gave me Lisa Jewell and John Marrs vibes and reminded me of several of their books all merged into this one action packed story!

What a brilliant, twisty and dark book that explores what lurks in the deep dark corners of Glasgow… loved it!

Disclaimer: I read this book in less than 24 hours as I could not put it down!

You know that I love a dark thriller and this gave me that in spade loads, it was creepy, murky and gritty and I couldn't put it down.

The book is well written with a compelling story line that follows Aimee, who is haunted by events that happened in 2001, although she has managed to overcome and get her life back on track so things are starting to look good for Aimee Dean, that is until Bea who has an award winning true crime podcast also becomes interested in those events and starts bringing everything back up to the surface.
The characters were well developed especially Aimee and Bea whose point of views were given in alternate chapters which really made me fell like I knew them. Although I kept feeling like I shouldn't and maybe it was going to come and bite me, I really like Aimee as a character, she was exaxtly the type of character I love in books like this where they are morally grey and you don/'t know how trustworthy they are and I loved her for that.

I am a massive true crime lover, I love true crime podcasts and watching true crime on tv, streaming platforms and YouTube, so this is an element I love finding in books and this is one of the best I have read.

I would highly recommend.

What Would Aimee Dean Do? Let's see, her boyfriend, Ross and best friend, Nicole, disappear on a camping trip, never to be seen again. Twenty plus years later, Bea, a podcaster for The Vanished and Forgotten, brings the story back, trying to solve what really happened to Ross and Nicole. The guests include Andrew, who was Ross's best friend and also on that fateful trip, Sarah, who was part of the friend group and there that weekend.

So, I really liked the podcast section of this book. I find true crime podcasts intriguing and that part had me turning the pages. It was scattered throughout the story and shows how Bea was diving into the investigation. Due to receiving "evidence" Bea goes to the local police and from there, two officers reopen the investigation. This book starts telling the story of Aimee as far back as 1997 and brings us up to current time.

What I didn't like about this book was that there were too many storylines going on. First, Aimee's father is in prison and is trying to get out. Then you have missing campers. The podcast storyline. Aimee is a night carer for terminally ill, or patients recovering from surgery and there is a story going on there, in which she is seeking revenge. I feel the reason we were taken back to 1997 was to get a feel for Aimee, since her childhood trauma, but her father's storyline just kind of died. I think the there was some missing piece in the very end of the story (last chapter) and it left me feeling blah.

Yes, we find out what really happened to Ross and Nicole, but there were just some unanswered questions that I had throughout the book. To me there was way too much going on in this book and if it was just the missing campers and the podcast, I would have liked it better. This book was not my favorite, but maybe you'll love it!

This book gave me chills. Aimee is the sort of main character who made me feel uncomfortable to read, she’s not easy to like and you know that something is just a bit off about her. I think for some people that could make this book harder to read but for me, I think I felt this way because the author was trying to make me feel this way - it added to the question of did she/didn’t she throughout the book.

I really enjoyed the mixed media portrayal in the book - the interspersing of podcast episodes to tell the history and introduce the various side characters was clever and really worked for me. It also helped to break up the intensity of Aimee’s chapters.

There are many plot twists throughout this book, this really helped to keep me guessing.

I always enjoy a thriller where you can’t work out by the end if you should like or hate the main character by the end and this book definitely fit the bill.

This book is dark and gritty. Readers should absolutely check trigger warnings before picking it up.

For me, this was a great thriller, interesting, twisty and kept me guessing right to the end.

One of my second loves after reading Thrillers is listening to true crime podcasts, so the mixture of two in this book really piqued my interest.

I really enjoyed this book, it was gritty and grim with the main Character Aimee having a pretty miserable life, she survived a rough childhood to then end up with an alcohol & substance addiction which she has worked hard to beat, she's now happy to just blend into the background but podcaster Bea arrives and starts digging into her past and what really happened on that camping trip. I really liked Aimee as a character she is well written and well developed, she is also a very morally grey character that you will go from feeling great sympathy for to screaming 'what the hell' Aimee??
The story is told through alternating POV chapters with Bea's investigation for her podcast and Aimee's flashbacks to the camping trip, this really helped the story emerge and build up slowly with the events of the night unravelling.

This was my first read from this author and I really enjoyed it.

I really liked the way this was written, the author used plain everyday language, which made it feel more realistic. I also like the way there was a split between a more traditional narration, and the transcripts of podcasts which slowly revealed more and more of Aimee's past. The mentions of covid and the cost of living also root the story very firmly in a time and place which adds to the realism.

Aimee is complex, which is not surprising from the abuse she suffered for much of her life. As such I didn't have a strong like of dislike of her. Her relationship with the lady she cares for feels honest and genuine. You can see the lovely caring person she can be. Yet there's also a much darker side to her.

I really liked Bea, I'm a massive fan of true life podcasts and hope no-one I listen to is putting their lives in danger!

This isn't your classic whodunnit, the murderer is obvious from the beginning. But there is still enough mystery to keep you reading tight until the end. are in time, makes them relatable.

We are introduced to Aimee as a 40 something year old carer struggling to make ends meet whilst living in the glorious Gorbals. She’s haunted by an event that happened 20yrs ago involving her then boyfriend and best friend, the full truth of events is still unknown. Simultaneously a podcaster is trying to get to the bottom of what really happened that day, interviewing other people who were there. But no one can track down Aimee to hear her side. Does Aimee know what happened to them?

Firstly I loved that this was written about an area I know well being a fellow Scot. I loved the little nods to the dialect too. I have to say Aimee’s not the most likeable character initially but as the story unfolds you really begin to empathise with her. I enjoyed the different time lines going from the event 20yrs ago to the present. I hope we meet Aimee again in a future book.

There is one thing I love in a thriller and that is lots of plot twists that you don’t see coming. This book was jam packed with them. The story moved fast making this a super quick read. None of the characters could be fully trusted. It is told in various POVs but mainly Aimee and the true crime pod caster, Bea. Absolutely none of the characters are to be trusted, and none of them are particularly likable, Aimee included. It dealt with various traumatic issues in an interesting manner, however, if trigger warnings are your thing you may want to check those out before reading this one. Overall I enjoyed it and was thoroughly entertained. I know some readers don’t like unlikable characters but I personally think that’s the author’s point and let me say, “nailed it!”

‘What Would Aimee Dean Do?’ is a dark thriller about a woman with a dark past involved in a mysterious disappearance twenty years ago. This novel is a real page turner and it really keeps you guessing. One minute you are shocked by Aimee and the next minute you are feeling sorry for her.

This is a quick read, with nice short chapters and I often think the best thrillers are written this way. This novel draws you in and covers some pretty gritty and disturbing subjects so if you have trigger warnings it’s best to check them before reading this novel. ‘What Would Aimee Do?’ pulls no punches and is a thrilling read.

This book was a great read. Caught my attention from the start, dual timelines, multiple POVs - everything I love in a book but especially in a thriller!

Aimee is a character who keeps you guessing. A great lead who has a lot going on and keeps you wondering about her motives, whilst also keeping you empathetic towards her personal struggles too.

I loved the podcast angle as I am a huge true crime podcast fan - so this is a massive win when I see this incorporated into a book nowadays.

I loved this book and it kept me on the edge of my seat and I really did enjoy it from start to finish. But I have to say that the ending I did not see coming! It was a really great finish to the read.

Affected by the pandemic, Bea loses her job. But with an interest in crime, Bea decides to start a podcast and her investigation crosses paths with Aimee, who has a secret. The chapters predominantly switch between these two characters so readers can follow the suspense as truths come to light. Both characters face obstacles and discover ways to overcome them. This is a suspenseful read and readers are privy to Bea's investigation and Aimee's flashbacks before the dark secrets are revealed.

Aimee lives a seemingly quiet life in Glasgow as a caretaker, haunted by her past. Her boyfriend and best friend went missing on a camping trip, never to be seen again. A gritty and chilling yet wonderfully written story unfolds in What Would Aimee Dean Do? Through podcast interviews and narrative, the absolute horrors of Aimee’s childhood are brought to light. And her past traumas make Aimee a very complicated character, beautifully written by Y.M. Miller. Settle in for an emotional roller coaster filled with so many twists and turns that will keep you on your toes until the very end.

It was an enjoyable dark gritty thriller. It was paced nicely and easy to read.

We follow Aimee, who is struggling to move on from a camping trip years ago when 2 of her best friends went missing.

This book had me guessing throughout, and it had so many different elements to it, lots of twists and plenty of wtf moments.

I enjoyed the multiple POVS and the flashback moments.
It's was an emotional roller coaster that kept me on the edge of my seat.

And even though it was a thriller, I was taking it all in ,acting like I was a detective in the case. And I truly enjoyed it.

I might be biased but I loved this book. The Scottish words really made me laugh.

So Aimee Dean is a home carer (same as me) who has had a terrible life so far. Poor girl has been through the worst. First at the hands of her father, then her boyfriend & best friend for missing in Glencoe with suspicion falling on her. A podcaster is looking into the cold case and brings it back to light. Meanwhile Aimee is not exactly innocent. This jumps back and forward and is full of twists. I loved it. Highly recommend 👌

This is an interesting book. The premise of the podcast and the troubled protagonist. At times it is hard to know whether to sympathise with Aimee or dislike her. I liked the split narrative between Aimee and Lea. There are also the different timelines. This book is definitely not one to read before bed, however is a good psychological thriller that keeps you guessing. Very atmospheric and good descriptions of Glasgow.

Aimee takes care of people who can’t care for themselves. She is in her 40’s and lives paycheck to paycheck. There are many backstories from her terrible and troubled past. This is a dark thriller and a quick read. It is a very interesting book and kept me guessing. The cover caught my attention and made me want to read the book. The cover fits the book incredibly well.

It starts off bam straight away but then it is a bit of slow burner I think but then all of a sudden bam again everything's happening. It was completely unexpected ending and think there was a section after a warehouse we could have seen more about but still a fantastic book, would definitely recommend.

This was a slow starter. It goes between Aimee and Bea. I wasn't sure how I felt about Aimee. I didn't like her dad how he threatened her. I didn't like the podcast bit. I did like DS Montgomery. I didn't like how Aimee got Fiona to help her. I did like Fiona sort off. They were confusing me. Twisty. That did surprise me. I wasn't sure how I felt about the end. Aimed is certainly a dark character. 5*.

This was a dark and gritty thriller with the perfect main character.
I was initially drawn to this book by its dark and creepy looking front cover.
I did wonder whether there may be something a little supernatural about it?

The events from 2001 have haunted Aimee for years, but now with her life back on track, things were looking up for her - until award-winning podcaster Bea decides to start digging into the case and details come flooding back!

There is a huge following for true crime podcasts and I've never really got into listening to them - but I love reading fiction where this device is used to investigate, uncover and reveal the story for us.

This story evolves as we alternate chapter pov's between Bea and her investigation and interviews and also the flashbacks of Aimee herself.

This presentation allows us to see things emerge slowly over time and at each point, I couldn't help making assumptions, judgements and theories of what went on in Glencoe on the night of that camping trip!

I really wasn't sure about Aimee for most of the book - I had my suspicions and loved how morally grey she was. A great character to explore throughout the storyline.

The writing style was well paced and I found myself racing through the pages to find out the big reveal.

A great read and my first by this author - I'll definitely be looking out for more from them in the future....
