Meurtre Mafia

Rate this book
Kojack has been running the Meurtre (Murder) Mafia since its' original founders Adair and Orlando stepped down to become husbands and fathers. Leaving the game for a woman is the furthest thing from Kojack's mind. He's having his way making money and entertaining some of the baddest women in the world. Kojack doesn't have plans to change for anyone or anything. Until he meets Rae. Being forced to step up and look after the feisty beauty in the most intimate way forces Kojack to realize he can't keep running from love forever. But an unfortunate event threatens the bond the two have built because he fears that Rae is blaming him for her misfortune, and she's pushing him away. It's never been Kojack's nature to chase anyone or anything other than the money. Kojack bottles his emotions up and keeps pushing until one day the pressure that's been building causes him to act out in ways that he may never be able to come back from.

Rae Webber is trying to navigate through life the best way she knows how. After losing everyone close to her, she is simply existing not even realizing the extent of her own internal struggles. One night changes everything and Rae is tossed into a whirlwind of pain and mixed emotions. Kojack is a constant in her life that she's grown to crave, but she's smart enough to know that just because she wants something doesn't mean she needs it. Just when it seems that life is easing up off of her a bit and she can breathe again, Rae is faced with more turmoil and in the end she decides that choosing herself may mean walking away from the very person that saved her in more ways than one.

Natisha’s pen game really is effortless at times because the way this story just flowed like melted butter was….whew 😮‍💨. I’m telling y’all at the beginning of this review to get 👏🏽in👏🏽to👏🏽this👏🏽story!!!! I enjoyed this book soooo much!

Rae is at a point in her life where depression has consumed her. She’s suffered loss after loss back to back and after the final loss which was the result of her brother’s incarceration, she feels so alone in the world. She has at least one close friend but no one to truly have unconditionally to herself. After crossing paths with Kojack for the first time, he definitely wasn’t someone she wanted to get to know. These two both had mouths on them and neither was willing to bite their tongue when it came to giving it how they received it! The disdain was crystal clear which eventually made the sexually charged energy that much more potent!

Kojack oozed sex appeal with his French and Creole speaking self! The man knew he had the juice and so did everyone else. Every woman wanted the 🍆 and every man admired him and wanted to be part of his team. Kojack was about the money and the money only. If you could provide him something warm and tight, even better but he was not looking to settle down. He is now the head of the Meurtre Mafia after two of his mentors gave up the life to become family men. Kojack said it couldn’t be him and just know he ate those words like a five course meal at a fine dining restaurant!

Once these two were able to call a truce and really get to know each other on some chill vibes ish, they realized that they were exactly what the other needed all along. They both provided a level of peace and form of safety that neither had ever experienced and once they both fell, it was a whole vibe!

There were sooooo many moving parts in this story that I can’t even begin to cover them all in this review. This was a beautifully chaotic journey to HEA and I enjoyed every single page!!

4.5 ✨

I found myself engrossed in the story from beginning to end, and I believe that speaks volumes. I liked Kojack and Rae back and forth the banter was entertaining. Rae was different from Kojack's previous ladies, and he quickly learned that he couldn't treat her like any of his others. Their connection seemed genuine and organic as they were still getting to know one other, but I wish we had gotten more out of them.

Plot: 📖📖📖
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Action: 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Troupe: urban fiction
Triggers: mental illness, domestic violence

Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it. The narrators carried this story for me. There’s no romance in this story or affirmations of love and devotion. It’s full of drama and some action.

Rae is struggling mentally and financially but is doing what ever she can to make ends meet. She really goes through it. I do love that she holds her own and isn’t a pushover.

Kojack is a piece of work. He acts like the prize throughout the entire book and even puts his hands on Rae at one point. He’s far from crush worthy imo but I don’t think the book was intended to be a romance.

Overall is a decent book filled with drama and some action,

Must Read

It was easy to tell Rae had abandonment issues. Her mother being murdered when she was a young child, losing her father due to a heart attack, losing her brother and man to the system, as well as trying to keep up with a sinking business her brother left behind. It all took a toll on her mental. Dealing with a man like Sammy wasn't Rae first choice but she had to do what she had to do to stay afloat. She also learned that letting Sammy in her and her brother business wasn't the right move. It was a huge mistake. Kojack was a very arrogant hoe. Being handsome and rich had women flocking to him but he was single and honest about his hoeness. I knew from the beginning that Rae was going to give him a hard time. Kojack is used to women falling at his feet. Rae wasn't one of them women although she was smitten with him. He was wrong as hell for dealing with Devine knowing she worked for Rae. With Rae giving him the cold shoulder. I believe that is when Kojack realized he had feelings for her. Kojack may have been the head of the Meurtre Mafia. However it didn't come without problems. He didn't have the best relationship with his father because his father hated what he did for a living but Kojack found out his father had no room to judge when he was being foul behind his mother back. Kojack was glad his mother left his controlling father and he was able to take care of her but that didn't go how he wanted it to. Finding out his little sister was pregnant and the circumstances surrounding it had Kojack pissed. Smooth was a bum. He thought because Kojack was his brother. It allowed him to have his hand out instead of making a way for himself. Kojack tried to put his brother little brother Tevin on but that was a bad move. Tevin bit the hand that fed him by betraying Kojack. All Kojack wanted to do was take care of his family but sometimes family could be your biggest downfall. Sammy was in his feelings when he found out Rae was dealing with Kojack. Kojack car getting shot up and Rae getting shot. Had Kojack on the hunt for who did. I already knew who was behind her shooting. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Rae and Kojack situationship was complicated from the beginning but they did find some common ground until all his family problems boiled over and had him taking his anger out on her. Kojack swore up and down that he wasn't the type to settle down with a family and kids. Rae definitely came in a changed his perspective.

Y’all I downloaded this book a few months ago and just decided to read it without reading the synopsis again. Why I thought this book was about a bodyguard falling in love with the woman he protects? 😅😂 I was so confused while reading the beginning of Meutre Mafia lol.

Anyway, since the Big Bad was handled and Kojack and Rae got together early on, I wasn’t sure what the rest of the book was going to be about. I kept reading though and was thoroughly entertained. The story moved pretty fast in the beginning, then dragged a bit once Kojack and Rae got together, but then things sped up again in the end. (Almost like it was rushed.)

For the most part, I liked Kojack and Rae. My opinion changed about Kojack at the end though. Given where the book ends, I don’t think Rae should’ve gotten back with him. I understand he was really stressed and upset and blah blah blah, but the 🥷🏾 still choked her ass. They could’ve had a healthy co-parenting relationship instead [and down the line if Rae is like “I *gotta* be with KoJack”, send his ass to therapy].

The only change KoJack made was his stressors. Who’s to say when other things cause him stress (because they will), he won’t do the same thing? Especially since he’s not consistently vulnerable.

Rae and Kalia’s friendship brought me joy, and I liked that the author featured it a lot throughout the book. Tank had a few lines that had me literally laughing out loud, but he had me making this face when he messed up in Greece: 😬

A part of me does think this story could’ve been a novella. The action and relationship happens pretty early on and everything after just felt like filler story. I was still entertained, but not as hooked as I was in the beginning.

It only takes that one !

Natisha you never fail me!!! This read was really good. Kojack was living his life by his own rules and thought he had everything set with how his life was going to look. Rae had been through so much and it was wearing bad in her mental. Their first encounter was not the most friendliest but the attraction was instant. They both had some growing to do and really learn each other once those feelings set in. Kojack spent so much time worrying about the people he loved but really didn’t take time to poor into himself. His parents and siblings were draining. His mother should’ve blamed him for her grown sons acting up and her daughter not listening but needed to learn the hard way about life.

Rae spent most of her time battling her inner thoughts and being negative, that it was hard to accept the good coming her way. Now, the situation with him choking her was dead wrong but I also feel like once he had time to reflect and really get his mind right that it was for the best to separate. Their communication was horrible. Rae also assumed a lot and wanted to fix things that he wasn’t ready or knew how to be vulnerable with her just yet and she was pushy. But in the end I am glad that they worked everything out, to embrace the love they had for one another.

Story 4/5

With this being a “mafia” romance those usually include some darker moments/themes than your usual contemporary romance stories. There’s street violence, possessive MMCs, and even some that will yolk their ladies up in anger and beg for forgiveness then makeup later. So it’s not unheard of.

But this story features the FMC getting briefly choked after withholding her mans keys & an argument. Then for pages upon pages she talks about how she will not forgive an abuser, be in a relationship with domestic violence, blames herself for his actions etc. - that completely changes the way you would perceive their relationship moving forward. Obviously they have a HEA although she called him a woman beater *record scratch*.

There is a lot of good mess in this story aside from my prior comments above that I enjoyed.

Narration 4/5
Winston James & Lauryn Nichols are two of my favorites to narrate an audiobook. Usually I have no notes about their performance but I had a few issues. Kojacks family is of Haitian descent and his mother/father have accents. During some of the parts where they are speaking Winston’s accent would go in and out. We could have committed to speaking in the accent or left it alone altogether.

Sometimes I wonder about books like this. I wonder what it would be like if a great beta reader and better editor had exerted more control. The idea, concept, and bones of the story are decent. The execution just isn't there.

#ProblemsOnProblems
When I start speed reading by skimming everything, I know it's a problem. When I am skim reading and stop caring, that's when I DNF. Here, I can't tell if it's just a fictional street Mafia story OR if it's meant to be a romance with dark themes. As a romance, there's a lot lacking to be desired.

#RomanceWithNoRomance
We don't see quite a few moments of two desperate people firming a romantic bond. We get the MMC hoeing around, kinda getting into an argument with the FMC, then tossing her aside while he gets his rocks off with another chick in the stable, then "oh my bad. I 'cheated' because you were acting sad, to the "main couole" banging again and maybe really feeling each other. That's the romantic trajectory.

Overall
As a street fiction drama, you have some good parts about street moves, as a romance it leaves me stale. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Good read

Eh, so it was okay. There were some mistakes that bothered me. For instance, it was mentioned a few times how there were 7 kids, including Kojack, in his family. However when the kids were named there were 8 in total.

Another mistake I noticed is there was a chapter where the clothing described that both Kojack and Rae wore changed in a few sentences and that annoyed me. As a reader, I noticed it right away so as an author you should pay attention to details like that.

Also, how does one get shot in the jaw and the neck but is able to perform oral sex only 4 days after being shot? Bffr.

Lastly, Rae was too weak and stupid for Kojack. Oh my gosh she irritated my soul. She went from being so called done with him for sleeping with multiple women and worried about catching HIV from him but then proceeded to have unprotected sex with him a week later. Yeah, no. I normally love Natisha Raynor’s books but this one just wasn’t it.

Meurtre Mafia

This was an interesting read. I was engaged throughout and thought the banter between Kojack and Raven was funny in the beginning. As their relationship progressed, it was easy to see that both were fighting their feelings until they weren’t. I’m glad the drama with other women died down before they made it official. It seemed that communication was their biggest issue. I will say I’m not a fan of third act breakups that don’t give me much insight on how the characters grow separately before reconnecting. I feel like we got a glimpse of Kojack, but not much on Rae. I really wanted to see how she’d level up. I also wanted to see more of a resolution between Kojack and his family. That said, it was still a good read. Hopefully, we get more from Kaila and Tank. I feel a storm brewing there.

They Didn't Know, They Needed Each Other!!

Kojack met Rae though Sammy because he running the dirty money through the lounge. Rae couldn't stand Kojack because he was arrogant and use to having women at his beck and call. It wasn't until they hung out that he was soft with her. Rae put it on him, now she's the only person he wants to be bothered with. He knew he messed up for putting his younger brother on. The oldest brother was looking for a hand out knowing that he has a family to take care of. He financially responsible for taking care of everyone. He caught his daddy cheating on his mama, so she packed her stuff up and got the hell on. The vacation is everybody needed. Tank thought he going to talk with other women while he was there and thought he going to put his hands on Kalia but Rae put a stop to that. That's why he was looking for Kalia with a flash!ight. Chanel told Rae communication is the key in all relationships. Since Rae told Kojack she is pregnant he hasn't left her side. They have to daughter. Tommy and Chanel have a daughter too. Now Kojack oh know why Adair and Orlando was talking about. Family and retirement.

I think what was missing in this book is a trigger warning for domestic violence.

The MMC literally chokes her, with intentions to hurt her, and it was never forewarned.
I would've never read it if that was the case.

It wasn't a bad read, but again, the FMC was very weak minded, easily manipulated by the MMC, abused, cheated on, drugged through the mud, all in the name of love? Because there was no love. There were no acts of love.

I try to stay away from books like this because it does nothing but bring down the woman. But, I used a credit on it so I had to see it through. The writing was not bad, sometimes I'm just confused how black women authors can write about other black women in this light.

Love love love

Sometimes it be the least person you ever expected to cause you to turn your life around. Mr friendly …. lol. I love him and the chemistry between him and Raven. The moment she needed him the most made her care fare for him more than she really wanted too. The man she never knew she needed.. Love caught them off guard. But the man that set her up.. whew chile… . I knew Kojack wasn’t going to stop until he found him. And his dad!!! What in the world man..

Meurtre Mafia

So this wasn't what I expected. The two person point of view was not bad at all. It's like we got more though. We knew what they were thinking and i liked that. Both Kojack and Rae came full force into each other's lives. The timing was crazy but also perfect. They needed each other for sure even if it wasn't for the normal things. I liked their crazy story but I still have that lazy smile when reading about their love. Their was definitely ups and downs but it came together for sure!!! Really enjoyed this couple

Wow! I LOVED this book. The growth. The communication. The trust. The passion. All the hallmarks of a beautiful relationship were here. Books do not usually move me to tears but this book right here had my waterworks flowing. I was so touched by some scenes that water just escaped from my eyes. 😢😢😥😥 it's also rare that I remember the character names but Rae and Kojack will be with me for a long time. Rae was so strong and Kojack had such growth. By the end of the book he had definitely reached book boyfriend status.

Would love to read more about the friends and siblings.

Loved them

Kojack had it had for Rae and I love that for him lol I knew he loved her as soon as he stopped messing with Megan. They were each others people because it didn't take long for him to know that she wasn't to be treated like the females he messes with before. When she got shot I knew it was Sammy I thought he was mad she messed with kojack and not that he was trying to take the lounge from her.

great read

This was a raw and emotional love story with just the right mix of street life and heart. Kojack never planned to settle down, but meeting Rae changes everything. Their bond grows strong, but life keeps throwing challenges their way. Rae’s been through a lot and just wants peace, even if it means walking away from the man who saved her. A powerful story about love, pain, and learning to choose yourself.

True love!

Love can change your views on many things. Kojak, the head of the Meurtre Mafia had his hands full with his dealings and many woman. But that all changed when he met and fell in love with Rae. Their union definitely came with obstacles that they got through. This book was well written, flowed well and was quite interesting.

Another gangster love story

This book doesn’t rise to expectations. Everything just kind of sits; nothing special or extraordinary. The story just rides the mediocre train at the same speed from beginning to end. Based on who got shot and the shooting occurred it was obvious who was responsible.

This is a well written book and an interesting story. But I need to like the MMC to love a book. I listened to the audiobook and if not for Winston James, I may have dnf’d. That’s how much he pissed me off. I wanted to like Kojak but frankly he was a dick. If Rae was my friend/loved one I’d still have an attitude on her behalf.
