Alpha's Captive

Rate this book
Brandon lost the love of his life, Roxbury, years ago. Their love was platonic, of course, no matter their secret dreams, because having a huge crush on another Alpha? No way. Alpha males did not get crushes or fall madly in love with other Alpha males.

It simply wasn’t done.

Roxbury is forced by his father to join the navy and his ship is attacked by pirates—when the cannon smoke clears, and Roxbury is missing and presumed lost at sea—Brandon wants to die too. But life goes on as it always does, and years later, he becomes engaged by his family to a suitable omega. First, however, he has one last sea voyage in service to the king. The ship is attacked by pirates, and Brandon encounters the last person he ever thought to see again. But Roxbury has changed, and he holds an old grudge against Brandon. He takes him captive to hold him for ransom but finds that the burning attraction he felt for Brandon is far from cooled off. As their powerful love struggles to survive, can they learn to trust each other again and stand together against the forces trying to tear them apart?

Alpha's Captive is an omegaverse, with strong, dominant Alphas. Kidnapping, knotting, possessive Alpha, but no dubcon, and no multiple partners.

I had a hard time listening to the audiobook as the narration wasn't at all my thing. But the premise sounded good and I kept listening. Unfortunately it fell flat for me and I completely lost focus and dnfed it near the end.

This book is a hot mess. I'm surprised I didn't give up on this book.

This series started out really great, Alpha's Kiss was so good. It had loads of magic and Lex and Rory had serious chemistry which made it delightful to read but this series has been downhill ever since. Atleast, it was easier to read Alpha's Touch even though I wasn't a fan of the book.

This book was not only not a fun read but also hard to get through. Mostly because it's boring. It took way too long to get started. For context, the prologue is a tenth of the book. Then when we finally meet Roxbury, Brandon and him are just stuck in a repetitive loop of having the same emotions over and over again and not really getting anywhere. The last quarter of the book is the most enjoyable part of the book because finally, something is going down and it also made me realise just how much the rest of this book dragged.

The plot is boring and the characters are no better. Brandon feels seriously undercooked and while Roxbury does better in comparison just because he has more of a personality, it is clear to me that neither character is very fleshed out and I wasn't invested in them or their story. Brandon might genuinely have been a better character in the previous books than he was in his own story.

I feel like it is easier to overlook bad parts of books that have enjoyable elements but when nothing is working out everything just feels worse. Roxbury has this habit of calling Brandon dearie and the moment that word would show up I would immediately be reminded of Rumplestiltskin from 'Once Upon a Time' and be completely pulled out of the story.

A major criticism of mine with regards to the previous book was how sidelined the magic felt and it was nice to see a bit more of that element be incorporated into this book. Unfortunately, it only makes a resurgence in the last quarter of the book.

We do get to meet Rory again but I didn't like how Rory's magic seems to have all been forgotten. Rory is supposed to be really powerful and I hated that he doesn't get to do anything with it. This would have been a great opportunity to show us how much his magic has grown since we last met him but instead in the final showdown, he does nothing. What even is the point?

I feel like one of the biggest things that the book had going for itself was the Alpha-Alpha relationship. It is an allegory of homosexuality in the omegaverse but the author does nothing with it and this was one of my deepest disappointments with the book. The book starts with Brandon realising that he can't fall for another alpha but by the end of the book, it is barely an inconvenience. These two are kissing in front of the world and nobody has any problems. They are just A-okay with it and that can certainly be a take but then what was the point of Brandon not being allowed to fall in love with another alpha.

I hate it when authors try to tackle issues in the omegaverse that could really be complex works with great commentary, like how sidelined betas are in the omegaverse, an infertile alpha or even an alpha-alpha relationship in a world where only alpha-omega relationships can lead to procreation and then proceed to do nothing with it. Why not just make it an alpha-omega relationship then? Brandon had already been established as an alpha but Roxbury could have been an omega, but the author probably couldn't see an omega as a pirate which is weirdly just misogyny manifesting itself in another iteration in fantasy.

Also, Queen Rozamond is an established bitch but it is a bad look when she is also the only female character in the entire book. In hindsight, I realise there are at least three female characters in the first book and all of them are villains to varying degrees so I guess the writing was on the wall since the beginning but it is impossible to ignore now.

The book gets better near the end but it put me through too much for me to even begin to like it. I still want to check out Asher's story and I really hope it will be the end of this series.

Brandon and Roxbury were best friends growing up and Brandon was hoping that they could have a relationship. Being sat down, at age 16, and told by his cousins that two alphas could not mate, he was disappointed. When Roxbury was expelled from school, he asked Brandon to run away with him. Brandon’s cousins came in at that time and stopped him. Fast forward 10 years, and Brandon ‘s family found him an omega to marry but he needed to do one more job for the king. When his ship is attached, he found that Roxbury was not dead as he was told. This started their story as how much they overcame to be together. Loved this and cannot wait for more.

I had no idea what to expect from this 3rd book in the series. When I read the blurb and realized there would be pirates I thought it might be a little over the top considering the previous books. Like how are pirates now a thing lol. Well I was pleasantly surprised and the story actually made sense of it all. I had no inclination of Brandon’s back story and I loved the second chance they were given here. Make no mistake Brandon was never a captive he was pretty much in charge the whole time. I also really appreciated that an omega was thrown into the relationship like sometimes happens in these scenarios because these two absolutely deserved the HEA they got together.

This is a unique omegaverse story in which two alphas are a blood match, fated to be bound together despite having the same gender. Brandon and Roxbury have known each other in their school days. They were always drawn to each other as close, platonic friends and they even did a little making out to "practice" for their future omegas. Roxbury was a bit of a troublemaker and one day it all got to be too much. As a consequence, he was on the verge of being commissioned to a naval officer position by his wealthy father. Deciding to run away instead, he begged Brandon to flee with him. Through a mix-up, he had to leave without Brandon. Later, all assumed that Roxbury died in a shipwreck.

Now, ten years later, Brandon is asked by his cousin, who is also the King, to accompany a trade ship on a newly established route. Brandon is still suffering from an earlier head injury which has also affected his mobility. When the ship is taken by pirates, he is shocked to learn that Roxbury is still alive, but now working as the pirate ship's captain. The two are immediately at each other's throats, angry and hurt. Still, the hidden passion remains like it was never broken. When new dangers arise, can these two fight the darkness and make the right connections to find their path together? This book ends on a HFN for the MCs with an unsolved overarching mystery of black magic affecting the royalty and others. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Shannon West has done it again!!! She very skillfully weaves a tale of loss, unexpected reunions, and the challenges that define their complex past. Set in the unique backdrop of the omegaverse, the story introduces elements like kidnapping and possessive Alpha traits, adding a thrilling layer to the emotional depth of the plot. The well-balanced pacing ensures an engaging read from start to finish. In conclusion, "Alpha's Captive" is a solid recommendation for those seeking a riveting romance, enriched with well-developed characters and a satisfying blend of passion and tension.

This latest book was a really good balance of action and two stubborn men finding romance. For as much as they missed each other their reactions towards one another were entertaining. They quarreled with each other, and Roxbury went as far as to kidnap Brandon. I actually found this amusing! I really enjoyed the story and dynamic here. They are still wildly attracted to each, but they have to learn trust one another again as there are real foes they need to contend with.

Massive amount of royal intrigue and devious magics. True love and mates. Betrothals and a secret pregnancy's ramifications. Brandon, Alpha and Earl of Bedford loves Roxbury, Alpha and pirate "Captain Jack "who is declared lost at sea twice before we get to the happy ending.
Fantasy, magic, pirates, and sea dragons. Rude and overbearing Alphas mixed into royals and kingdoms.

Alpha's Captive by Shannon West was a fun read. It's about two best friends, Brandon and Roxbury. The chemistry between them was undeniable. But his alpha cousins caused trouble between the two. Now the drama starts. Oh, and we have pirates to deal with. Kudos!

This is a delightful twist on the typical omegaverse story. Brandon and Roxbury are both alphas, but fated to be together, in spite of family outrage and meddling. The sparks these two set off will have you craving a tall glass of ice water.

I liked both main characters but even with 200 pages it felt kind of rushed specially nears the end, I thought I still had like half of the book but all just happened so fast that I could not fully enjoy it, still a great book to start my year for sure.

I am really really hoping that the author continues this series we need 2 more books because Harrison definitely needs to get rid of his nasty Queen and find himself an omega for real and Asher needs his HEA as well!!

Alpha x Alpha

“This was no soft, silken-skinned omega in front of me. This was an Alpha, and he was all mine.” I do enjoy an alpha/alpha pairing, and Brandon with his Pirate Lord were fun.

There was so much yearning and unresolved tension between Brandon and Roxbury. Society frowned upon an Alpha/Alpha pairing but fate wouldn’t be denied. These two made me laugh with their bickering. These guys got a second chance and Rox certainly didn’t waste his opportunity, despite his foolish ideas.

Fantastic addition to the series!

Cooking with gas

The prologue was all I needed to know that this was going to be everything and more, I was locked in from the first page and couldn't put it down. Our MCs are truly destined to be together and watching them navigate the fact that they are two Alpha's drawn together, the hurt and betrayal of their past and the other intrigue that takes place was so good, further story building and character development from the previous books in the series.

This book felt like the perfect cressendo to the previous two books, super excited for the story to continue
