The Centurion: The Balance of the Soul War

Rate this book
In 1943, Jerald C. McIntire is supposed to die in a grenade explosion in the Ardennes forest in World War II. He miraculously survives, but from that point on Jerry no longer needs to eat or sleep, he has no emotions, and he never ages. After several suicide attempts, Jerry discovers he can't die. But how is this possible?Nearly twenty years after his first brush with death, Jerry learns that he somehow broke the realm of the natural order. Even God Himself isn't sure how it happened, but Jerry is the only man ever born without a soul. The archangel Michael informs him that in the Soul War, good and evil are bound by certain laws and honor checks. Jerry, however, is bound by nothing and can therefore serve as the Master's Centurion-an agent of God bestowed with the name Jericho. Jericho roams the streets of New York City, keeping order between the agents of Heaven and Hell, the angelus and the demonata. When a rogue deity, an ancient Hittite dragon god, comes to Earth and begins preying on both angels and demons, Jericho must step in to maintain the balance. But he stumbles into a much larger plot-one that threatens to irreparably damage the Balance of the Soul War and end all things.

It deserves 5 stars...

But its only going to get a 4 from me. This was a unique plot. At least it was unique to me.

I enjoyed reading it - however, I found myself very distracted by all the amateur mistakes in formatting the book. I don't think I found misspelled words but I did find an occasional incorrect tense, or adjective.

What was truly distracting was the formatting. I would stumble on a paragraph that was randomly split into two paragraphs (mid-sentence.)

The really weird thing I kept seeing was mistakes with the use of quotes for dialog. At one point, the dialog had 《》those symbols for quotes. For a while the quotes opened and closed like this " " and then they switched up and opened and closed like this ,, ".

Often after dialog from one character, instead of starting a new paragraph, the next sentence appeared following the dialog making it confusing on who was doing the talking.

I'm making myself dizzy trying to explain these things. Like the random . In the middle . of a . sentence.

If it hadn't been for lacking a good editor this book could have been nearly perfect. I still recommend it. Just hope the author sees this and realizes its worth the extra time to get someone professional to edit the manuscript.

This was my first read by Sean Patrick Little. A good friend lent it to me. This book took me by surprise as I had no idea what to expect. The story line took me by surprise. The author has a great gift for story telling. I would highly recommend any of his books, you will not be disappointed. The saddest part is this book is out of print.

I enjoyed reading this one. As always with this author, the characters are well written and there is plenty of amusing banter to lighten things up a bit. The Survivor Journals series and the Abe and Duff series are also well worth checking out if you have not already read them.

This story captured my attention from the start. The premise of the battle for souls is defined well by Little, creating a new view of spirituality in our world. Looking forward to a sequel! :)
