When Isabella a human girl raised by faeries is found by a young girl named Elizabeth, she hopes they become friends. It is only when Elizabeth's life is in danger that their friendship is truly put to the test. Can Isabella save Elizabeth from death and persecution for being a Catholic? Read on and find out for yourself.

This was a pretty good story about friendship and more. If you enjoy these types of stories, then check this book out at your local library and wherever books are sold.

Started off interestingly enough and Sarah Singleton's writing is so beautiful that I wish I could rate this one higher. Unfortunately the plot began to drag after the first few chapters and I couldn't connect with either of the two main characters. Towards the end the pace began to pick up, but the happily-ever-after relied too heavily on deus ex machina for my tastes. A disappointing read.

This book was...ok. The story had a lot of potential but the writing style felt dry and plain, which made this a bit boring to read at times.
I kind of liked that some aspects of the story reminded me of other books such as Howl's Moving Castle (the crow people) and The Picture of Dorian Gray at the end.
I appreciated the different take on faeries the author put forward, but there wasn't enough of it - all of the talk of religion, though relevant to the tale, left less room for the more interesting parts, such as exploring the shadow land and conversing with the faeries.
There also were a lot of grammatical errors and repetition of certain words within a couple sentences of each other. For example, "Soon they would have him, soon. He was exhausted, his muscles giving out, his heart thundering. Soon he would be..." (there's more to that sentence but that could be a spoiler). You get the idea. There was a lot of those errors throughout that made the read irksome.
Overall, the ideas and ways that everything was tied together was interesting, but those moments were few and far between, sadly. Like I said, this book has potential, but the writing style let it down.

I'm not going to leave a bad review, that would be unfair! However, this book wasn't quite what I thought it would be. I felt it dragged a little at times to create 'twists' that didn't quite hit the mark for me. Would I⁰⁰ read it again? No, probably not. I do think it has its place though, wouldn't recommend it to readers I know, but in certain circles, it seems to have almost a cult following. Just not my thing

This book is like a synopsis to an incredible story of two young girls and how their lives intertwine in the shadow land and the real world. The book is written for a younger reader unfortunately because if the author took the time to really develop her stories then this story would be a fantastical journey.

This story has some interesting information on religious history surrounding Catholicism and The Church of England entwined with a bit of Mytholgy/Paganism with the shadow world and faerys, also referred to as "crow people". I really liked that Elizabeth and Isabelle became friends and the historical link between their families.

Set in the Elizabethan period yet far removed from either the royal court or the drudgery of peasant life, this features the daughter of a merchant who serves as a companion/lady in waiting for the childless wife of a noble at her country manor. It's also one of those rare books where Queen Elizabeth is the villain, as her anti-Catholic policies have led to persecution and torture of anyone suspected of aiding priests who may want to foment a revolution to take back the throne, which has put our main character and her family at risk.

I know The Church as an authoritative institution got all up in corruption, but then as now, The Church =/= the worshipers =/= the faith, so as a technical Catholic I connected strongly to her devotion. As an alumnus of St. Ben's/St. John's, I also latched right on to the idea of a secret sect of monks carefully preserving a hidden library from those who would destroy it. I'm pretty sure 50% of my remaining attachment to the religion is pride in being connected to the people who made all the pretty things.

As for the part that makes up the "fantasy" label on the sticker -- I tend to zone out immediately when the word "faerie" is mentioned, so I appreciated that we did not dwell long in the shadow realm, and that the "crow people" were ultimately tied up enough in the idea of archangels to keep the story sufficiently grounded in realism for me.

But for the most part, it's a story of friendship between Non-Queen Elizabeth and Isabella, a girl who has just come back to her body after 300 years in the immortal realm, doing whatever they can to protect the former's family from an overzealous priest hunter (speaking of which, I had a great deal of fun picturing Kit as an evil Jon Snow). I got quite swept up in the action, and by the halfway point I had to finish the book before I could go to bed.

While tending to the saint's shrine in the woods near her house one November day, thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Dyer comes across a Green Girl.

Isabella Leland's bones have been at rest in the human world for the past three hundred years, while the rest of her has lived among the Crow People. The world in which she wakes is very different from the one Isabelle once knew. A Protestant queen now resides on the throne and practitioners of Catholicism, like Elizabeth and her family, have been forced into practicing their faith in shadow, lest they jailed or even worse.

The stakes are raised when Elizabeth's older brother secrets an exiled priest from Oxford into the Dyer home for safekeeping. With Queen Elizabeth's priest-hunting spy (Kit Merrivale) hovering about the estate of Spirit Hill, where Elizabeth serves the Lady Catherine Melibourne, returning home to aide her family becomes impossible. Elizabeth has no choice but to ask for help from mysterious Isabelle, who has ventured beyond the forest in search of her new friend.

Both girls must reach out to overcome the threats and fears inherent to life as outsiders, if they want to survive this ordeal.

I thoroughly enjoyed OUT OF THE SHADOWS. Sarah Singleton seamlessly mixes folklore, history, and theology without once sacrificing character or plot development. Ms. Singleton gives the perfect amount of detail in all three subjects so we're never overwhelmed by too much information.

While the greater themes of acceptance, worlds of larger possibilities, life as an individual on the fringes of acceptable society, and trust resonate throughout the text, the heart of this novel is a friendship between its two young girls and the loneliness it fills.

Written by Sarah Singleton, Heretic is a novel set in the Medieval and Elizabethan Era in England. Singleton narrates the story of two young girls; Isabella who has been living in another world, known as the Shadow Land, for 300 years since the Medieval Era. And Elizabeth, who lives in the Elizabethan Era. However their lives are not as different as they seem. Against incredible odds they become friends, make sacrifices for each other and their families.

Singleton uses very descriptive language in the novel that helps the reader to understand the situations the characters are in and what they are feeling. Having said, this can be a weakness because sometimes in very in depth parts the language becomes confusing and can bore the reader.

There are 2 plots and settings in Heretic that intertwine to add an effect to the story. Singleton uses flashbacks to portray the second plot, which is Isabella’s past in the Medieval Era. This helps the reader to understand more about why Isabella is, the way she is. The main plot is set in the Elizabethan Era when the Dyer family are in grave danger. These plots are interesting because they link and add an extra twist in the novel.

The characters in Heretic are very well developed and the language that describe them and their emotions is exceptional. Occasionally Singleton drags on in particular parts of the novel and can bore the reader.

Overall, Heretic is a very good novel. I personally would give it a 6 out of 10 as sometimes it drags on too much. I would recommend this book for people aged 12 and above as long as they have a good understanding of complicated language and are interested in the Medieval and Elizabethan Era.

Heretic is a novel written by Sarah Singleton. The main plot of the story is set in the Elizabethan era, another through the flashbacks to the Medieval Era. The story is about how two young girls meet, one a green girl who has lived for over 300 years in the shadow land (named Isabella) and the other a young girl trying to escape the possibility of her family getting caught for hiding a Catholic Priest (named Elizabeth). Throughout the novel, Elizabeth and Isabella build a friendship that faces life threatening decisions depending on whether or not they trust each other.
It is an outstanding novel as Singleton uses a mixed genre so it could appeal to more people. Readers of Heretic also learn alot of history throughout the book so the novel might be strongly encouraged by teachers. Singleton also goes through flashbacks and uses much descriptive language which makes the story and outline easier to understand.
However, the story does have a feel of confusion as the novel goes through flashbacks and uses two plots. This makes the story hard to follow and sometimes having flashbacks in which are unnecessary at times might cause the reader to lose concentration. The story also features a mixed genre which might not appeal to some readers.
This book would be relevant to young teenagers. I would recommend it to teenagers between the age of 12-15 because it would be too confusing for younger children and too easy for older children.
I rate this book 8/10 because even though the descriptive language made it a little easier to understand, flashbacks and two plots sometimes made the story a bit at times confusing. I did enjoy the book.

Settingnya di Inggris; tahun 1540-an. Ceritanya tentang Elizabeth yang bertemu Isabella; seorang gadis yang 'nampaknya' seusia dengannya --sekitar 12 tahun. Isabella si gadis hijau. Hijau?

Saya belum tahu akhir ceritanya; tapi saya sarankan temen2 baca aja sendiri. Narasinya mantapppppppppp, tema n cara penyampaian ceritanya orisinil n natural, plotnya --huihhhh; kaya film!

The novel Heretic is written by Sarah Singleton, it is set in the Medieval times in England. It is based around 2 girls both at a young age becoming friends, and helping each other with fixing the complications and problems with their families. It is a mixture or genres, the novel is a fantastic mix of the 2 genres fantasy and adventure.

A good book encourages an emotional responds from the reader. As I travelled alongside Singletons characters I found myself throughly involves in her intriguing plot. Will they survive? Will they get there?

Recreating the Medieval Past was achieved by Singletons descriptive writing. Singleton described Isabella Leland as a moss coloured girl with dark brown hair like a mat down to her feet. The Faery Queen was the fairest of all the faeries, she has gold and black jewellery down her arms and neck. Jet black hair to her feet with 2 plates decorated with pearls and sapphires and a crown with 1 big gem that looked like the a crescent moon. The way Singleton put so much detailing into her characters and settings helped you imagine it in your head.

Alongside the books good points there seemed to be some bad. Singleton had to many things going on at once, which makes it hard for you to keep track. Through out the book Singleton had flash backs containing the girls lives before that point and how they got there, with all of the changing, it makes it hard for the reader.

Overall I rate Heretic 3 out of 5 because of the uniqueness of the book.

Kisah mereka hampir sama, hanya berbeda 300 tahun lamanya. Perjuangan mereka untuk menyelamatkan satu sama lain benar-benar menyentuh. Padahal Isabella belum lama mengenal Elizabeth.

The novel, Heretic, is written by Sarah Singleton. Heretic is an interesting Fantasy book that twists the normal world with the supernatural world. Isabella Leland and Elizabeth Dyer are the main characters and form an unlikely friendship. The novel is interesting, including flashbacks to help understand Isabella and the reasons behind her actions. Sarah Singleton constantly changes the point of view in the novel, so it is quite easy to understand the characters thoughts and opinions, yet the constant changing of the point of views can make it hard to follow. Due to the genre of the book, Fantasy/Adventure, it is hard for some people to relate to. Heretic is very fascinating book, but has quite a difficult plot line to follow and there are a lot of fine details to remember. This story is about two young girls, one who has lost her family and one who is in danger of losing hers. When Elizabeths mum is taken away for suspicion of hiding a catholic priest in their house, Elizabeth and Isabella must help the family. Help is needed from the faeries that Isabella spent hundreds of years with. When Isabella is forced to choose between her brother, her only relative, or Elizabeth her only friend, the girls friendship is put to test. I gave this book a 7/10 due to its interesting content. I suggest this book to children between the ages of 12-15.

Heretic is an adventurous, dramatic and mysterious novel which was written by Sarah Singleton, which was set in the Elizabethan era, It has very detailed, disruptive flashbacks of the medieval period. The main characters in this book are Elizabeth who lives in a time where being a catholic was a horrible thing, Isabella who is from over three hundred year ago and also the priest that Elizabeths family needs to hide and look after named Thomas.
I think that is good in the book how Sarah Singleton has made a few different Genre’s in the novel, so a lot of different types of people can read and enjoy it too, because it is like the books that would usually love.
However there is also a genre that some people may not like or enjoy. Suspense was greatly used as was the use of flashbacks of Isabella’s life which explains the mysterious girls past and gives more of an understanding, which left me wanting to keep reading. I also found myself getting confused as the scene kept changing over and over every paragraph at the ending, That made me have to think more which lowered my enjoyment levels. Over all, Heretic was an amazing and knowledgable book, that I enjoyed. But I would recommend it for ages fourteen and up, I also give this book a 3/5.

Heretic written by Sarah Singleton is a book that is set in the Elizabethan Era. It is about a girl called Elizabeth finding a green girl in the forest that has been living in the shadow land for 300 years. Her name was Isabella. Sarah Singleton has used descriptive writing which clearly describes the setting and appearance of characters so we can picture what the scene looks like. This book shows how Elizabeths and Isabella’s friendship strengthens as they go through risky and tough conditions together. Heretic gives us a taste of fantasy with mythical creatures mentioned in the book. This book also has a mysterious side to it as we didn’t know what Isabella was until the end of the book. There are a few downsides to this book. In my opinion, i think there was too many things going on at once. They would suddenly go from Isabella to the priest then back to Elizabeth which confused me from time to time. Also, i found the flashbacks not very engaging as i felt as if they were just dragging me on. The ending of the book was a nice typical happy ending. I recommend this book to people between the ages 12-16 as the book can be quite confusing and younger children may find it hard to understand. Overall this is a good book for young teens.

Heretic a novel by Sarah Singleton is set in the Elizabethan era. The Novel is about two girls (Isabella and Elizabeth). They are both not accepted in society and are considered outcasts. Through their differences they find friendship. The novel has an important life lesson that through friend ship you can overcome hardships.Heretic also has historical elements throughout the novel. It talks about the religious prejudice that went on during the Elizabethan era. Heretic is a very engaging book that uses descriptive language and suspense. There are elements of mystery in the novel.Singleton keeps the reader in suspense as she has the reader guessing what is going to happen next.Singleton has written a outstanding novel. It is hard to find an imperfection in The novel Heretic. However I would probably point out that when Singleton uses flash backs to go back and forth the from medieval time to the Elizabethan era the reader might lose interest as the story line keeps changing. Sarah Singleton aims the book Heretic at young teenagers but she does not talk down to them. She uses a varied range of Dialogue. Heretic would be a great read for teenagers but may also appeal to some adults. I give the book a 9 as the novel engages the reader throughout the book.

The novel Heretic was written by Sarah Singleton. This book is about a girl named Elizabeth. Elizabeth finds a girl named Isabella in the forest who has been dead for three hundred years but has been living in the faery world. That night Elizabeths brother Robert brings home a heretic priest to hide in their home, but he gets found by a priest hunter and Elizabeth and Isabella must help save him and her family. This novel’s strong points were that the main characters in the book were about the same age as the readers, so readers could relate to the situations and the characters quite realistically. However a weakness in this novel was that Sarah Singleton changed from one characters point of view to another and this meant that it was sometimes hard to follow who’s point of view was being told. I would rate this book a seven out of ten as I found it hard to follow at times and various plots and events in the novel were far too drawn out, making it easy to loose the readers interest instead of keeping them captivated and engaged. I would recommend this book to people in the age range of eleven to fifteen. I recommend these ages as the book is quite hard to follow and it would be hard for younger children to understand the events taking place in the book.
