American feminist author and cultural critic who wrote Lesbian Nation in 1973 and was a longtime writer for The Village Voice. She was also a leader of the lesbian separatist movement of the 1970s. Johnston also wrote under the pen name F. J. Crowe.
Why don’t I ever hear anyone talking about Jill Johnston? I was totally intrigued after seeing her speak in Town Bloody Hall (1979) and decided to read her work. There are parts of this book that came across to me as art of the kind that maybe Burroughs was doing but from an entirely different angle altogether, and then other parts that were more straight ahead but always still experimental. Some of the strongest writing comes near the end as if the entire book had been building toward it. Very interesting, occasionally frustrating, frequently brilliant. Recommended.
