Sentinel will suffer my wrath, even if I need to destroy the city.
My time in prison didn’t change my goal. Superheroes are a menace, and I’m going to expose them as the arrogant cowards they are. They’ll call me a villain, but I’m doing it to protect Vanguard. But after being defeated by the Centurions, I no longer have powers. This could be a problem, one I will fix by any means necessary.
My presence has brought one of the world’s greatest heroes out of retirement, or so I thought. If he thinks he can charm me into helping save the city, he’s got another thing coming. I’m nobody’s sidekick. When my arch nemesis goes missing, I’ll need to save him... so I can kill him myself.
Vanguard will never forget the name Damien Vex.
Sinister Passion is a M/M, dark, snarky romance with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It features brooding villains and sex, but not always in that order. This is the conclusion in the Villains of Vanguard Trilogy.
Ryder acts as if he doesn’t watch sappy movies. He won’t admit to daydreaming about ex-boyfriends and asking “What if…” He’s a closet romantic who gets anxious about first dates. In a world filled with turmoil, he’s wants to drown in warm, fuzzy moments that make his heart swell. He loves bringing his chaotic dating life to the forefront. While he calls himself a romance writer, he likes to think of it as fanfic about his life. Someday… it’ll become a reality. Until then, he’ll invent dreamy men that make him tear up at their insistence that love always wins.
Ryder lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, living his happily ever-after. When he’s not writing, he can be found working on book covers (which means he’s admiring huskular bears with more than a little chest hair.)
Vex won me over immediately, I love the little evil bean.
In the beginning Damien (Vex) is the Bad Guy of all bad guys, and he likes everyone to know it. Then, as is the downfall of all canonically grumpy characters in romance books, he falls kersplat in love with someone and finds all these desire to destroy the world slipping away 😂
Won-ho, Damien's obsession *cough* crush, is not impressed by Damian and that has him running around all in an overdramatic tizzy trying to get his attention. Damien did his best impression of one of those male peacocks strutting around with a false sense of grandiosity, in a lovable way though, we supoort his quest to woo Won-ho. He's like those extremely dramatic mega villains who go on little monologues inside their heads about how they could destroy each person they interact with, then someone will talk and distract him and the evil internal edge lord monologuing will be forgotten. 😂
Damien is like a hyperactive puppy in his need for revenge. He, along with the extremely sassy secretaries of Vanguard, who all seem to enjoy pushing poor Damien's villain buttons, deal with his previous villainous aspirations and try to balance those with his new relationship. I found it surprisingly good considering the book mood I'm in. Hands down my favorite of this series. It's ridiculous and despite the seriousness super human plots come with, it has all the light hearted silliness you'd want in a book like this. Definitely recommend.
Wow, Damien and Won-ho are far and away the most engaging couple of the trilogy! (I think I'm also just a huge sucker for the trope of an evil asshole with a soft-spot for their partner.) We also got to see the culmination of Latoya's machinations that've been hinted at in the previous books. And, that final fight sequence was a highlight for me—intense, exciting, super high stakes. If you couldn't tell, I'd say this is easily the best book of the trilogy.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Simply amazing! Ryder outdid himself with this book. I think this is his best yet.
This the last in the villains' series and we get the biggest and the baddest of the bunch-Damien Vex. He is the one villain who almost defeated the city's top superhero team-the Centurions. He was defeated by the upstart Deviants in the last trilogy. He has made it his life's mission to defeat their leader Sentinel. Anyone who has read comics knows how that usually turns out. Lex Luthor has never defeated Superman and The Joker has never defeated Batman so it's not a spoiler to say that Damien doesn't get his wish. However, Ryder does give Damien a bit of revenge, but no spoilers on that front.
This is sort of a stand-alone, but you really need to read the first two in the series to get the entire picture. Carmen LaToya runs the superhero groups in Vanguard, but it was revealed in the last two books she is the Big Bad of the series. Damien is determined to bring her down after one of her minions attacked Won-Ho Jung, who was the original hero in Vanguard, but who is now Damien's new boyfriend. Damien is very possessive.
It was part of Carmen's plot to take Damien and the others out of the picture. She had come up with a plan to acquire a serum to allow her to steal super powers. She finally got the last part from Damien. After trying to take out Damien and the others, Damien starts plotting to get rid of her. No more spoilers.
Ryder outdoes himself with this book. Damien finds love with Won-Ho and we get to see a softer side of him. However, he doesn't become some big marshmallow. He's still the big bad from the first series. He has new goals now that don't include mounting the heads of dead superheroes on his walls. They still include running the city and crushing his enemies while using his powers to make spicy times with his new lover.
The writing is excellent. The plot is just wonderful. The characters are so great. Won-Ho is one of my favorites of all time. He is so well written. I can't say enough good things about this book. Go read it.
What a surprise this one was. Damien Vex, the big bad lurking around both the Heroes and the Villains series, gets his own story and it couldn't have been more different than I expected. Damien always gets what he wants. He wants Won-Ho. Won-Ho does not want to be got. Cue a completely new experience for Damien. Courtship! Watching Damien navigate his way through liking someone, respecting their feelings, going at their pace, becoming friends, holding back and learning to respect and love someone, was page-turning. Yes, he was Damien in all his villainy glory but we learnt his history and saw how much good he does quietly and without fanfare. A complex man who lets Won-Ho in and finds true love. Damien and his little therapy group are such fun. The Doc and his 'passenger', Diesel and Clint, all three driving Damien up the wall, just like family do and, turns out, they're actually his friends and weird found family too (not that he'd ever admit that). There's so much more to the story and you'll have to read if yourself but I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't tell you to read at least the other books in this series. This can be read as a stand alone but you'll get more out of it if you have prior knowledge. Even better, go back to the start and read the Heroes series. I'm so glad Ryder is giving us a third Vanguard series. I can't get enough of his burly bears! Oh, and I didn't see this coming but Damien is my absolute favourite now.
He's completely unlikeable. Damien Vex is a villain, and he's not looking to redeem himself. He was caught and sentenced for his crimes (invincible Nemesis, Men of Vanguard #4) which he's far from penitent about, except that he's sorry he was caught. So when he's broken out of Cold Iron, a prison for powered villains by Carmen LaToya, former director of the Centurions superhero group of Vanguard city, he's surprised when he's ordered to attend weekly group sessions lead by Doc and two other villains, Diesel (Corrupted Desire) and Clint (Reckless Impulse). The three of them are assigned tasks to perform very surrepituously by Carmen in exchange for their freedom. But does she have an ulterior motive? Damien is pretty damned sure she does. And this leads him to meet Won Ho, a very hot Korean beefcake with a history of his own. The more Damien gets to know Won and his story, the more Damien changes for the better.
For a superpowered story, this read a bit predictable. Damien is self-aware of how cliche some of what's going on is, but wryly so, and that's part of the humor. I could have done without the long and mostly dull sex scenes (including one in a museum while they're chaperoning with children down the hall- this scene gave me the icks.)
I feel like this really raises the profile of Doc & his vengeance demon Havre, and it feels like this is an oddly left out major character in the trilogy. Kind of a glaring blind spot and theirs is a story I'd enjoy reading.
Before the end, I was chewing my cuticles! I have never read O’Malley before this book, which was my mistake. This series is best read from book one. This is book three! So, I was left in a quandary over who these characters were and how they related to one another. Once I figured that out, the rest of the book became most intriguing and enjoyable. I love the banter which is witty and amusing whether in conversation or in thought. Each book is a standalone but interconnected in one “super” world. Damien and his fellow villains, Diesel (first book) and Clint (middle book) are meeting with Doc as their guide for after prison, Cold Iron. All Damien wants to do is annihilate Sentinel, the superhero who sent him to prison. Carmen LaToya got the guys out of Cold Iron but for what purpose? When Damien meets Won-Ho at the gala where he was on a mission for Carmen, something is triggered in Damien. He needs to know more about this elusive man. Won-Ho will be a hard man to reach. He has a past that is singular. Can Damien reach this amazing man? What was Carmen’s reason for setting them free? Basically, this story will give Damien Vex, super villain, and Won-Ho many firsts…Now, I want to go back and read Diesel’s and Clint’s stories even if I do know their ultimate ending. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews.
Third and final book of the Villains of Vanguard series, this can be read as a stand-alone. There is an overarching plot between the three books, but the romance, superhero action, and emotional growth arcs within each book are great on their own. The fact there is basically four plotlines in each book twisting and turning into fully realized whole cloth for a "simple" steamy MM dark superpower romance makes these gems.
Be aware the protagonists of this series are Villains (with a capital V) and Vex is no exception. He is dark to the core of his bones, so much that a shadow gem chose him to wield it. Whether in the boardroom or sitting high above the streets, this man has no patience for anything that doesn't make the world the way he wants it to be, and he wants to be on top. Then he meets a man who had no patience for hierarchy.
The romance in this book, I feel, is the strongest of the three books. Vex and Won are mirrors and complements of each other. Top tier powers. Best at their day-jobs and spandex-jobs. Bears.
But Vex doesn't bow to anything, not even love.
Then an enemy decides they can use Won as a piece in their chess game with Vex. Is it checkmate or will Vex change the game?
Having read the others, this was my least favourite. I think it was because Diesel was my favourite character. That being said this was still a good book and my rating shows that. Vex was a man of money and liked the best things in life, which we knew from previous books. In this book we find out the reasons he is like that and more about his ongoing feud with Sentinel. Some of the ways he contemplated revenge were genius, but underneath he has a soft side mainly thanks to one man. Won-Ho is that man. Whilst he was a superhero, he realised that not everything was black and white and he reactions fitted the situation. He was good for Vex, he made him think of the consequences. This book kept my attention from the opening page and some scenes made me laugh. "Don't lick the dinosaur bone" had me laughing out loud and I think that one line will constantly be in my memories. This was a slower paced book than the others as it was tying all the books up to a dramatic ending. This is the 1sr series I have read by this author so I am off now to read where it all began and to find the Dr's story.
Overall, I liked this story. I’m not much into comic book superhero stories, so much of the “powers” and fight scenes were quite cheesy to me. However, the romance between Damien and Won-Ho was great! Knowing this was an HEA story didn’t take away from their relationship’s development. As someone new to M/M romance, I must say I enjoyed this. The spice was perfectly executed. The only other issue I had was with Damien’s character. He is constantly saying how dangerous and menacing he is, but his actions really don’t show it a majority of the time. He spends much of his time helping others. Perhaps he is way more devious is previous books and because I’ve only read this one, I don’t see it. It just seems like he thinks way more of himself (as evil) than he should, and this part of his character is a bit tiresome to read over and over. Even if this isn’t my genre of choice, I enjoyed the read.
I really enjoyed Ryder O'Malley's Heroes of Vanguard, but I just might like the villains even better. I find the banter and dry wit of the villains engaging and snarky in a way the heroes aren't supposed to be, and the whole idea of having Doc to help them adjust to being on the outside again is pure gold. Although this book could be read by itself, you will understand the characters and what's going on more if you have read the first two books, and maybe the Heroes series, as well. Readers get to see a different side of Damien Vex in this book. He's a little softer with his fellow villains/friends and his new love interest, but he's no kitten (unless it's a feral one. LOL). That's a good thing, because we find out what Carmen's real agenda is, and it gives Damien and the others a new goal. I loved this series, and I can't wait to see what Ryder writes next.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
It takes real skill to take a major villain in a series and make him a romantic main character without totally having him lose his edge or desire to achieve some of his long-held villain aims. The author has done that here perfectly with Damien. He's still after revenge, but he's also discovered feelings he never expected to have for Won-Ho and those feelings are quite possessive, so when someone messes with Won-Ho they'll have Damien to answer to. Won-Ho also has to make some major adjustments in thinking when he realizes what he and Damien can be to each other. This has been a great series and I think this book is my favorite as we get to see two fantastic main characters get together as well as see plot points we've been wondering about and hoping to see resolved dealt with and a completely satisfying fashion.
In the finale of his villains series Ryder does it again. How do you redeem the biggest of the bad? Ryder took on the challenge with this series of books to make us readers fall in love with, and sympathize with, the bad guys. I know this couldn't have been an easy task. Over the course of 4 books (go get that newsletter) Ryder more than accomplished his goal. I was sad at this one ending as I really want to see what's next for our group of no-so-bad guys. Another hit in my opinion. Also, the steamy scenes shine again with the inventive use of powers. Thank you Ryder for another series of the people of Vanguard. Can't wait for the next chapter in the Grunts of Vanguard this fall!!!!
The Villains Of Vanguard series in this world is truly a great fun read. I loved this book so much which surprised me.
Won and Damien are great MCs and matched each other well. I enjoyed reading their story and this would’ve been 5 stars if there was just some more intensity and tension in their relationship - while they are very good together they really really lacked emotional depth that I could FEEL. I like to feel what I read and this missed that connection.
I also wished this book was longer so I could see how their relationship developed and how they ironed things out as they got to know each other better. I’m going to go back and try the other interconnected series and see if I can get back into it.
I'm not sure what I getting into going into this, because Vex has been such an a$s in previous books. He's still kind of an a$s, but an a$s with ~layers~. Ryder O'Malley is really good at making interesting characters, and he absolutely succeeds in this book with Won-ho as the love interest. He's so unimpressed by Vex, and calls him on all his bull while at the same time bringing out his softer side. That Vex takes things so slowly with Won-Ho, and also has a green division to his business, and knows all his employees and looks after them and their families is such a surprise after how he showed up in the first series. The found family vibe comes through strong, and Vex puts aside one of his main obsessions to defeat the true enemy of the city. Definitely love this 'verse, and looking forward to more books!
I adore when a book lets you see new facets in a character you consider familiar (readers of the author's previous series set in this world will recognize Damien Vex) and you get that in spades here. Damien is still himself, with all his spikey OTT ambitions and focus, but his goals have shifted a bit, and we get to see a softer side in the love and dare I say respect he feels for Won-Ho, as well as his interactions with others he cares about. Loved the strong chosen family vibes and the chance to see things unfold in this one— well worth a read. 4.5 stars.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Damien Vex the only villain who almost defeated the Centurions, but is he really the baddest? There is someone worse right under everyone’s noses. Although Damien does get a bit of revenge on Sentinel in this book. The real bad person hides in plain sight. Plus Damien has a love interest that he has to work hard to win over. With all the Hero or Villains of Vanguard, the books are a funny devious adventure with great endings.
This book was the best!! It was so much fun to read, I love nothing more than when the big baddie falls face first into love ❤️. Aside from all the villainous-ness, I found the evolution of Vex an absolute joy to read. I adored this couple they were sweet, all kinds of sexy 🔥. This book it was the best in the series IMO. I would recommend.
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
Powerful! I've yet to read a book by this author that wasn't the absolute best. Ryder has a way pulling you into the plot and taking you for a ride. Damien Vex's character was so amazingly well done. Von-Ho became Damien's love interest and wow! I don't think I've seen a character so unimpressed with someone. Yet here we are. Damien's character has succumbed to a reader's delight of an evolution.
**I received this arc from GRR for my honest feedback.**
I love action, and I love superheroes whether in comics or books. If you also like that, I rec you read this book and series. Damien was so much fun, at least for me. Loved how their relationship developed, the banter was fun, and the cute silliness. It's a great mix of everything. The spice was great too.
He still wants revenge on them especially after his time in jail and being stripped of his powers. They call him a villain but he is trying to keep vanguard safe. He will destroy the city if he needs to so things are going to get dangerous for those in the city. Will he get his revenge? Will he get his powers back? Will someone become his new muse? See how it will all go
This was another great addition to the series I think I enjoyed this one the most, I wasn’t a. If lover of the superhero and villain trope until I read this author’s work and if you like comic books or this trope I would give this author a try.
Ryder knows not to take themselves too seriously and it shows. The books have a very old style comic book cheesiness about it with just the right amount of awareness.
It was interesting to try and get us to like Vex, but Ryder almost succeeds. But he still desperately needs a proofreader as this is full of the kinds of errors that a human would catch but spellchecker won't
A great and satisfying end to the series. I hope there are more books in this world. Only downside is I wish it was dual POV. I think it would have made the non-POV main character have more depth.
I am so glad this book was finally released as absolutely loved this series. I must admit until Ryder I was not a fan on the superhero theme but their books are just exceptional! I have thoroughly enjoyed each book and really do not want to give away spoilers, so please do read for yourself. All I can say is that Ryder has put together a well written story and plot that has brilliant characters. Highly recommend As a side note I have noticed a few other authors jumping on the Superhero theme but I tried one and literally gave up after I struggled with two chapters so am sticking with Ryder for my superhero fix!
Amazing story of Damien Vex, a villain out to get revenge and Won-ho, one of the first superheroes of Vanguard. Loved the workings of Damien's mind, his friends (that he denies are actually friends) and the real villain of this story. Throw in the fantasy world with numerous superheroes/villains, the bi-awakening and the love story and you've got a fantastic read. Part of the Villains of Vanguard series but can be read as a standalone (I did, but will be going back to read others in this series)
