Secret Michigan is a fantastic guide for anyone who is interested in Michgan's mysteries. I'm a lifelong Michigander and even I didn't know about half of these places/facts/stories. I love learning new things about my state. The stories in Secret Michigan are fascinating, interesting, and definitely made their way to our "To See" list.
Of course, I've been through The Tunnel of Trees, been captivated by the collections at the Gilmore Car Museum (a MUST SEE for car lovers), visited the Tawas Point Lighthouse, eaten donuts from Cops & Donuts in not only Clare but Mount Pleasant, too, and walked through Fort Michilimackinac on Mackinac Island, plus many other places identified in Secret Michigan.
If you plan a trip to Michigan, add a few places from Secret Michigan to your itinerary.
I'm happy to include the paperback I received as a review copy on my bookshelf.
Do you ever think you'd like to learn some weird and wonderful things about where you live or travel? Perhaps there's a secret speakeasy in your town, or you're headed somewhere new and would like to get off the tourist trail.
Well, if you live in or are coming to visit Michigan, I've got the book for you!
As you can tell from the title, this is one book you'll start and then not want to put down. Who knew that we had SO MANY oddball things in our beautiful state? Yes, Michigan is much more than the Great Lakes, my friends.
Secret Michigan is a very easy and quick book to read. It touches on some of the most unusual and interesting places to see in Michigan. Each place is succinctly listed in 2 pages which includes a listing of exactly where it is located and an additional comment.
Although many of the places were already familiar to me, it was nice to be reminded. The choices are varied and good. My only complaint is that the descriptions were too brief. It would have been more interesting if the stories were expanded with quotes or actual stories. This is a good book for someone who wants to skim the surface of Michigan has to offer.
I really enjoyed this book. It has a little something for every one. Fun facts to history. Some places I have been to. Some I was right by them didn't no they were there. Others didn't know existed and I want to go. How fun for Amy to get to do all these things so we can learn about them. The way she weaves in the history and fun facts really makes you appreciate her writing. She did her homework on all the places and it shows.
