Bryce has lost everything he loved. Michael is rebuilding a life built on lies. Is their love worth fighting for?

In the high-stakes world of professional hockey, Michael “Zeetoo” Zhang had the potential to shine brighter than his older brother. But he chose a treacherous path, and the scars of past failures and the constant shadow of his brother’s success haunt him. After a run of bad luck, and angry at the world, his resentment intensifies when he’s arrested, then sentenced to work supervised hours at an inner-city community garden. He’s already lost hockey and his house; how can he afford to lose anything else?

Bryce Kincaid is chased by his own demons, and years after the mistakes he made, he’s determined to never lose control again. He’s built something stable and good from the wreckage of his life, and the last thing he needs is a pampered celebrity anywhere near his beloved community garden project. When Michael arrives, he’s a broken man wrapped in a fiery package. But the gardens work their magic and reveal a vulnerability in Michael that Bryce can’t resist, he’s terrified to open his heart, and their growing relationship might be nipped in the bud.

To change his life, Michael must confront his past and fight for a future he never believed he deserved. But when that past threatens to destroy everything Bryce has built, their love could be over before it’s begun.

I'm kinda confused about what it is that I just read in all honesty.

I detested Michael immediately and I've already forgotten the name of the other MC unfortunately, but he was a strange character too. I don't really understand where they fell in love because there's no conversations between them at all?! They have dinner together at Easter and kiss, then they talk briefly and agree not to be together because of their addictions, then all of a sudden there's a huge time jump, Michael has changed personality entirely and they can't get enough of each other. 😐😐😐

Basically the entire relationship appears to have happened off page, as well as all the character growth. Both MCs were completely different people by the end, but where was their journey to get to that point? Also that poor kid being shunted back and forth between LA and Arizona seemingly every few days... It seemed ridiculous considering the MCs were both financially struggling too.

I also really didn't care for the mobster plot line. It felt way too forced and it dragged on for so long to then be resolved far too quickly and in an incredibly vague way. It felt like it had been introduced as part of a plot checklist for external tension and as a result was really half heartedly done.

I just don't understand why this book exists when everything happens off page...

4.5*

Addiction is a cruel and vicious disease but, even knowing that, when I started reading this one, I really didn't like Michael Zhang at all.

He's selfish, comes across as a whiny child unwilling to accept any responsibility for the situation he's found himself in, he's horrible to his older adoptive brother, he's opinionated and he's still not willing to do anything to improve his life, only wallow in his misery while blaming everyone else.

Of course, though, this is all a front for a scared man who's never dealt with the abandonment and self-doubt he's harboured since his adoption at the age of five (no issues with his adoptive parents or with Charles, his older brother, Michael does acknowledge to himself that they've never shown him anything but love).

But when he meets Bryce, at the urban garden project he's been ordered to do community service at, having tanked his pro ice hockey career with a DUI, you can see that he's desperately trying to re-establish who he is if he's not Zeetoo, younger brother of LA Storm captain Charles.

I liked how this had a slow burn vibe, even though the attraction was there from the start. Bryce has his own demons he's dealing with and Michael's gambling past isn't going away either, with threats from the guy he'd owed money to, now affecting the project.

No spoilers, but I liked the way both men knew that they had to deal with their own issues first before they could even think about a relationship, Michael knew he needed professional help and Bryce needed to sort out the situation with his ex-wife, their son, and her new relationship.

Once they do get together, the connection just grows ever stronger as they deal not only with the lives their addictions have put them in, but also the possibilities of a brighter future. I loved them as a pairing, both supportive and bringing something joyous to the other which helped to keep the demons at bay.

Overall this was my favourite so far in the series and, while I think the set up for book three was a tad clunky, I have to say I'm definitely looking forward to it!

#ARC kindly received from the authors. I am voluntarily leaving a review

This one is on the heavier side, as both of our main characters deal with addiction (Bryce to pills and Michael to gambling), and they're both in different places on their recovery process. It is treated with the respect I've constantly seen from both RJ and VL.
As for the romance itself, it was on the sweeter side, which let a balance to the darker sides of the story. I really liked them together. I do wish we'd been able to see more of Michael healing his relationship with his family, especially his brother. But that could still be a good short so it's not something I'm mad about.

This wasn't bad I was entirely entertained for a day.
Those two aren't your typical hockey romance guys. They are quirky, struggling and oh so real AND they are able to communicate. They talk about their misunderstandings, their hangups and actively working on the relationship they are building.
The 'I love yous' totally blindsided me and a lot happened off the page- but I'd still give other books by this author duo a try.

I am really loving this series, the ladies can write!!! Michael the professional hockey player, is confident on the ice but always feels second to his brother. His addiction is gambling which leads him to trouble. Bryce a recovering addict, pain pills, with a soft heart for people who need a helping hand. His gardens bring peace to those who need it and Michael needs it.

I enjoyed the two completely opposite men, yet they got each other. It took some time, therapy and planting seeds and watching them grow for Michael to realize his family and friendships were always there for him. Bryce makes big steps with his son and his ex-wife. Having someone to love makes a difference in life, they found that with each other.

It was a fabulous book, a lot of soul searching, laughs, tense moments, forgiveness, a definite must read!!! Can’t wait for the next book!

Second is a good addition to the LA Storm series, though a little darker than the first book as Michael Zhang has to work through his community service at a local community garden and battle his demons regarding what got him to that place. Bryce is the manager who runs the gardens and is happy to have those needing to work off their sentence there, it's helped him to find his place in life while dealing with recovery.
I have to say, it took a while to warm up to Michael. He's a real a-hole to pretty much everyone, thinking that he's owed the world and they're all against him. Whereas Bryce has worked hard through trauma, recovery and having to be apart from his son. Working in close quarters together, Bryce's calm nature and understanding has Michael on a slow turn in the way he thinks.
It's an emotional time, full of hurt/comfort vibes. Michael has a lot to work through, personally and with those close to him, including his brother, Charles, and teammates from LA Storm. However, what led to Michael's arrest follows him and may mean trouble for those he loves.
I found this to be a good story, a nice slow burn romance that definitely has some hot moments but it's the support that they offer each other that shines. I really enjoyed how Michael came to his HEA whilst also knowing that it's a continuous journey. Him and Bryce together, along with Bryce's son and the family they have around them, make all of the rough times worthwhile.
**Content warning - addiction, recovery**

This was a terrific second book in the series.
Thankfully for disgraced hockey player Michael, once he hits rock bottom the only way is up, even if it’s not easy, and in this story, he gets to learn that the hard way, as he goes from the lowest of lows to the high of a life restored. Along the way, he meets local community garden manager Bryce, who has already made that journey, and with his help, Michael finds his own path to recovery. Addiction is a hard subject, and these two authors have done an admirable job of depicting the struggles and aftermath they go through, while preventing it from becoming too heavy with Bryce’s adorable son Leo, who provides relief from the darkness.
Filled with strong characters, this slow-burn story was a sometimes difficult but sweet and heartwarming read with some angst and heat, and I was held captive by every page. Highly recommended.

Michael (“Zeetoo”) Zhang is not easy to like at the start of this book. Entitled, resentful, self-important and hell-bent on self-destruction, he has a chip on his shoulder the size of Los Angeles. I’ll admit, I was worried the authors had dug too deep to make him unlikeable.

Bryce, on the other hand, is introduced much more softly. An ex-addict, struggling to maintain a long-distance relationship with his son, it’s clear he’s made mistakes and has baggage but that he’s trying to be better.

Yet, despite my initial hesitation, these men wrapped themselves completely around my heart. Michael’s redemption arc was *chef’s kiss* and the relationship built between him and Bryce in a healthy and solid manner. Secondary characters (Leo, Mrs. Cho and Jackson) make the book more interesting and robust.

Tackling recovery from addiction with sensitivity and care, the authors have created a wonderful story of hope and love. 5 stars.

I've read the majority of books by these two authors, and each time I find myself amazed with the story told. Each is powerful, touching on topics often not addressed in romance, sucking the reader into the darker side of everyday life. Addiction was a great addition to the reads from these ladies.

From a loving and indulging home, with a professional career, Michael was felled by a hopeless addiction to gambling. He lies, cheats, cuts off his family and close friends, and then sees his life disintegrate as the debts pile up, the story successfully demonstrates how any addiction can become all-consuming. Michael 's and Bryce's stories were a startling look at how addiction affects lives. From the loneliness, desperation and sheer hell, this story will take you there. Michael is initially a very hard character to like, even though you know he's broken, he was such a bitch at times, you just wanted to throttle him. His arrogance and entitlement, blaming everyone for his addiction was like watching a car crash. It tells a compelling story of the impact gambling has on people's lives, and on those who are closest to them. The love story between Michael and Bryce is slow burn, it has to be to allow Michael to discover how he has hurt others, and to overcome the shame of his behaviour, to feel that he deserves Bryce. His romance with Bryce was beautifully organic, and I loved how it grew and evolved, allowing both guys to learn from one another, and accept that their addictions changed their lives irrevocably. Realistically, their rehabilitation and recovery wasn't done at the end of the story, both were working hard to stay on that road, however, I had no doubt that they would get there, and be happy together.

I really liked this book. Its had a very different feel than the first book in this series.

I really enjoyed the harder hitting aspects of this book. Its was interesting to me to read about two main characters dealing with different forms of addiction but helping each other rather than making each other worse, which is usually what's written about.

I liked the two characters and how their relationship developed, it read very natural and believable. It was a nice alternative to the more heavy aspects of the story.

Michael's story starts as one of addiction and family heart break but ends with love and happiness!

Hockey is a big part of this story but not the main factor. Dealing with life's issues and finding a supporting partner is Bryce and Michael's story

And oh bless Mrs Cho and Leo!

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
SECOND is the second book in the L.A. Storm series. It can be read as a standalone without issue.

Michael “Zeetoo” Zhang has always felt second best in his life. His adoptive brother is also a professional hockey player. So, he's always been compared to him, even the Zeetoo is because Charles was on the team first. It's annoying always trying to measure up to him his entire life. When one bet leads to another and another, while drinking, and one misstep has Michael losing everything, he hates that his brother is the one stepping in and helping him, giving a place to live. He is a hockey god, he shouldn't be living in a pool house on his brother's property. When he's forced to do community service as part of his sentence, he never expected to find some sort of peace in the community garden. Was that because of the sexy man running the garden or some solace he found among the planets?

Bryce Kincaid is fighting his own demons. After getting hurt and developing an addiction to pain pills, he lost everything that was important to him. His wife, his son, and his music career. He's slowly but surely finding out who he is now as a person and what he wants. He loves running the community garden and watching nothing become something. He loves his bees and taking care of them. What he doesn't expect is the attraction to the cocky hockey player. They both have addictive pasts so they shouldn't get together, but what if being together helps the both of them heal in ways they never expected?

I was so invested in this story. I loved the little bit of angst thrown in with the money shark. You knew he was popping up eventually, but you just didn't know when. Seeing how Michael was finally able to live his best life and give up the pain he's felt of not being good enough. Healing his relationship with his brother and falling for Bryce was so sweet. He was so unlikeable in the beginning, but I kept rooting for him!

I can't wait to see what's next!

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the second book in this hockey based series. I think you could read this as standalone, but you should really go and enjoy the fun of Finn and Cam's story in SCRIPT, and the bonus novella SPARKLE.

It is really difficult to like Michael at the start of this story; he is deep in a gambling addiction which is destroying his life. His hockey career is possibly over; his house is gone; he has to stay with his brother who is successful, team captain, family man, and genuinely all round good guy. Laid truly low, Michael ends up having to do community service in a city garden project.

Here he finds an immediate connection with Bryce, his supervisor, but they both recognise the attraction only complicates the situation – however much they wish otherwise. Through their closeness and the understanding that Michael gains from the garden and its patrons (a shout out to Mrs. Cho), we see him redeemed, and finding his place in the world. He had a lot of demons to slay, and he worked at them to reach a happier, more fulfilled and contented life, reconciled with his family, and starting his new family in Bryce and his son, Leo.

This was a book which brought out the less glamorous and difficult journey that some sportspeople may take when faced with the challenges of addiction in all its forms. The authors have done a really good job of making someone who could have been irredeemable into a man that deserves the attention of Bryce and the happy ever after they create.

I am looking forward to the next installment already!

Even with 30+ books in their Hockey Universe, Scott & Locey keep producing amazing stories with so much emotion that your heart can't help but melt No matter how many tropes & pairings the duo creates they keep finding ways to bring originality to said characters and as far as my mind is recollecting, I don't recall any of their athletes and the men who love them facing this kind of struggle(A bit cryptic I know but I don't want to spoil anything😉).

Michael and Bryce are complete opposites from occupations to homelife to emotional states, at least on paper. As Second progresses a few cracks begin to appear that give us a peak that they may not be as opposite as originally thought. Not to spoil anything but sometimes the struggles a new couple faces should be proof that they should not be together and then again it's those same struggles that make them perfect for each other if they are willing to put the work in. Scott & Locey have perfectly balanced both sides of those coins. It's easy for a reader to sit on the outside and want to smack a character(Michael😉) with an iron skillet to make him see sense(trust me I'm that reader most times😉) but when you start to look at life from the characters view you begin to understand why they are the way they are, doesn't mean you don't still want to give a good whack but you understand him😉.

As I've said from their very first hockey collaboration, Changing Lines, I don't know which author writes which character but they have always created a realistic cast. Michael and Bryce are no different, realistic fictious gems that I just want to wrap in loving Mama Bear Hugs until all the pain and drama disappears.

Now, having said that, don't think Second is bogged down in depressing, angsty, heartbreaking melodrama. Yes, there is some of those elements but the hurt is well balanced with comfort, healing, and humor that sucks you in until the last page is swiped and then you want to kick yourself for not reading slower to savor the deliciousness of Michael and Bryce's journey.

Just a couple of things to finish off:
1. As always, most of the Scott/Locey Hockey Universe is a collection of standalones but again as always there are a few mentions of past characters and teams. You don't have to read them first to enjoy Second but I warn you, when these other characters make an appearance or mentioned by current MCs, you will definitely be intrigued with wonder over their journeys and with 30+ books in the universe, that is a rabbit hole you might want to start at the bottom(or beginning as it were) to work your way out of instead of falling further in😉. But seriously, however you choose to read you won't be disappointed nor will you be lost(I do highly recommend reading the original Railers and Owatonna in order as the holiday novellas further the journeys of already established pairings).

2. In the Scott/Locey Hockey Universe there have been a few entries that had very little actual hockey in them for various reasons, ie: off-season, injury, possible retirement, etc. Second falls under "etc". This doesn't diminish the brilliant pull of the story in any way but I just wanted to mention it for those who need to have a lot of on-ice time in their stories, there is some here and it definitely plays a part in Michael's psyche but not nearly as central to the story as in others.

3.25/5 I enjoyed this by the end, and I’m sure there’s an argument for seeing the shadows before you get the bright dawn (or whatever, lol), but I found Michael so incredibly toxic in the grip of his addiction that it was hard to read. He is absolutely not ready to face it, blames everyone but himself for his behaviour, pushes others away, and is pretty awful. It was hard to like him, and there were so few moments of him being decent at the beginning that I even found it difficult to empathise with him. (I also love low-angst, though, so this may largely be me.)

It took until 33% for him to sort of admit there was a problem, and 44% to properly admit it. We get one time jump of a couple of months to allow him to make some progress, but it still didn’t really feel like enough time. He also talks a bit about his group but almost never about therapy after the early forced sessions when he isn’t taking it seriously. I certainly hope it’s all still happening, but it wasn’t totally clear to me that he was actually sorting out his underlying issues apart from the fact that he seemed to actually (mostly) be behaving so much better.

It was clear that Michael was terribly unhappy (and was making others unhappy), and I wanted him to acknowledge his problems so that he could start working on them. I wish it had happened sooner so we could get more progress and dating time. Although it gets a little messy, I did appreciate that Bryce and Michael decide that the beginning of his road to recovery is not the time to start a relationship. But we don’t get a lot of time with them actually dating, just a sort of jump to “now it’s okay for us to be together, so full speed ahead”.

I felt like the vandalism was a little too oblique for the person responsible, but I’m glad it all worked out. The fact that Michael hid the blackmail threat for as long as he did made me a bit warier about his progress. (I know progress is not linear and takes time, etc., but this is actually pretty major, and a big link to the gambling and addiction. Deliberately ignoring it seems really counterproductive and not a good part of his recovery.) Jackson’s about-face about Bryce seemed too quick, but I guess we only had Bryce’s feelings about what he felt before, so maybe it wasn’t quite as dire as Bryce felt it was.

I really liked when people actually accepted new information and grew and changed. I liked the community garden, the outlook that Bryce usually has, Mrs. Cho, and Leo (and his new love for karate and hockey). And Charlie, who never gave up on his brother, no matter what. It was lovely to see that relationship improve, Bryce and Michael move forward together, and Michael figure out what he actually wanted to do with his life.

This book starts out with Michael hitting the bottom. He does something that is harmful not only to himself but to his family and teammates as well. On leave from his hockey career he is ordered to do community service at the local community garden. From day one he makes sure he lets everyone know he's not there willingly. This is a spoiled, man-child that has never taken any responsibility for his actions. It's always someone else's fault. That is the way of addiction. Bryce runs the community garden and he is the one to make sure Michael does his time. He isn't easy on him but he isn't harsh on him either. He understands where Michael is coming from since he's a recovering addict himself. He patiently keeps up with the teaching and support each day. Each of these two have their own issues to deal with and they are slowly getting through them as they let their insta-lust move into love. Michael's chances of returning to the LA Storm is up the the air. Mending his relationship with his brother and teammates is on shaky ground. Then he's being blackmailed on top of it. Bryce has to face the changes that are happening in his family as he's dealing with vandalism at the garden. Will these two be able to get their lives in order and work out the issues or will everything be too much?

This book hit really close to home as I have several siblings that are addicts (one died from his choices with drugs). It is told in a very respectful way to addiction; probably a little too soft IMO. Addiction is very hard on the addict but in some ways it's more hard on the family. Feelings of not being able to save them from themselves, can't do enough to help and then finally having to let them go. Michael and Bryce's rock bottoms came before they could do any unrepairable damage. The supporting characters are all well used. The blackmail was a nice touch of the horrors addicts sometimes face. I can honestly say that for the first 1/3 of the book I didn't like Michael at all but it is so accurate to addicts that it didn't sway my opinion on things to come. I really liked where he ends up and can see both Michael and Bryce having good lives. I would've liked more time with Zee-One and Zee-Two and their healing. These two authors work very well together and this book is just one example of how well that is. Definitely worth the read, as well as the rest of their co-written books.

I received a free copy. This review is submitted voluntarily.

Michael Zhang is a disgraced hockey player who just keeps spiralling downward. He lost his last poker game in a big way and has no luck convincing the loan shark to lend him more money, unless he agrees to throw a game. Since he isn’t playing now, it isn’t an issue except for the daily calls reminding him that the debt is increasing at $500 per day. He has an accident that results in him being charged for DUI. He’s required to live in his brother’s pool house (the brother, Charles, is captain of Michael’s team, the LA Storm) and he is sentenced to community service at a communal garden run by Bryce who is a recovering drug addict due initially to pills prescribed as a result of an accident. He lives in a small flat near the garden with his landlady living in the flat below. Michael has a giant chip on his shoulder, and he takes his anger out on everybody around him, including Charles and his family. Michael and Bryce slowly overcome their baggage and their difficulties and fall in love, moving toward their happy ending.

I don’t know if the authors did much research into addiction (they most likely did a lot), but they sure nailed the attitude addicts have in blaming everyone but themselves and being angry all the time. A late friend of mine said that addicts had PhDs in manipulation and it’s certainly evident here. Both have secrets that they would prefer not to tell the other, but they form part of their backgrounds and their addictions. While I realize that this is a work of fiction, but a lot of the actions of the two MCs are true to life. The plot doesn’t have many detours but the ones it has are very necessary. One of the joys of a series is revisiting people who appeared in previous installments. This is no exception, though the fact that it’s only the second volume means that there are only two characters who fit the bill. Of course, the fact that there is a hockey team involved there are more returning characters. Michael’s arrogance followed by guilt limits the exposure to them, other than his brother Charles and his family. Bryce spends a lot of time navigating his ex-marriage, but his part-time son Leo is a big help in getting the two MCs together.

I’m looking forward to the next installment in this series. Based on the blurb (not always reliable), it will take up another area that should be very interesting.

Second is book two in the latest hockey series, L.A. Storm, by writing duo Scott and Locey. Again, as with the first book in this series, although one MC is a hockey player and professional hockey is a huge motivator, we don't actually see any puck action on the ice. I think these stories are going to be more character driven, with great personality development, wonderful relationship building, and a good plot thrown in to make a hat trick.

Michael “Zeetoo” Zhang is our hockey player, and he starts out as a total tool. His gambling addiction has brought him low, and his bad additude and the chip on his shoulder make him downright mean. Losing everything has brought him to Bryce’s community garden, and he doesn't know what to do with the pacifist-vegetarian-zen-yoga-gardener. Michael's words, not mine.

Bryce is a recovering/ed addict, and father of 7 year old Leo. He is definitely a free spirit, and passionate about his love of nature and his unsheltered friends. But his kind nature has a calming effect on Michael, and along the way, hope seems to be something worth fighting for.

I love the way the authors allowed the addictions to play a major role in the budding romance. It allows the relationship to build and the feelings deepen over time, so that when they come together and ignite on the pages, it doesn't seem rushed. And, when huge life decisions must be made, needing the other man's reassurance seems natural. But, along with the addiction comes a price, and they must face the fallout of past decisions as well, dangerous as they may be.

I really liked this book, and I think fans of Script will enjoy this story as well. It is on a heavier subject, but along the same writing style rather than sports heavy like many others by RJ and VL. However, I don't think you would lose a lot if you haven't read book one and pick this up. I'm looking forward to seeing what the authors have in store for Bryce's brother-in-law and Oliver, the new guy on the team. I'm thinking it might be a little darker yet…

Happy reading!

This was an age gap of about 10 years with Bryce being older. This was a bit of a slow burn because halfway through the book they’d only had one kiss that didn’t last very long.

This is a L.A. Storm book, but Michael wasn’t even really on the team or anything the whole time. Barely any hockey. Not a bit fan of Michael. He was a hot mess and didn’t seem to think he needed help or that he was the issue.

I’m honestly not sure what I thought about this. Michael annoyed me for most of the book, we didn’t see much outside of the main characters. We got a couple scenes with people but no one was majorly in the book, not even their families.

Some typos/inconsistencies:
Tony’s last name changed (Langella at Loc 247 and Micheletti at Loc 1253) - ex-wife’s bf
There’s a section at 66% where it’s like Michael is talking to himself three times in a row during Bryce’s chapter.
“Bryce was wringing his hands beside me.” Should be Michael since it was Bryce’s chapter - 75%
At the end of chapter 18, Bryce told Jackson that looper was after his boyfriend and Jackson (Jack) said he’d come because he threatened his nephew. Then in chapter 19, Jack’s acting like he didn’t know his nephew had been in danger and accused Bryce of being the one to have Looper’s henchman come smash the garden up.

There wasn’t much romance either since both men were addicts and had to take things slow especially with Michael being newly overcoming his addiction. He didn’t even really seem to get over his issues with his brother and feeling inferior, jealous, etc. I wanted to see him actually make amends and work for his recovery if we were going to make the entire book about addiction and the havoc it could cause. 2.5-3 out of 5 stars?

Michael: hockey player, adopted, not sure about his sexuality (didn’t talk about previous hookups or anything but he did said he’d never been in love before), gambling addiction
Bryce: 7 year old son Leo, has an ex-wife, NA meetings, bisexual, 38

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the second book in this hockey based series. I think you could read this as standalone, but you should really go and enjoy the fun of Finn and Cam's story in Script, and the bonus novella Sparkle.

It is really difficult to like Michael at the start of this story; he is deep in a gambling addiction which is destroying his life. His hockey career is possibly over; his house is gone; he has to stay with his brother who is successful, team captain, family man, and genuinely all round good guy. Laid truly low, Michael ends up having to do community service in a city garden project.

Here he finds an immediate connection with Bryce, his supervisor, but they both recognise the attraction only complicates the situation - however much they wish otherwise. Through their closeness and the understanding that Michael gains from the garden and its patrons (a shout out to Mrs Cho), we see him redeemed, and finding his place in the world. He had a lot of demons to slay, and he worked at them to reach a happier, more fulfilled and contented life, reconciled with his family and starting his new family in Bryce and his son Leo.

This second installment of the LA Storm series brought some intense subject matters for the MCs to face. The fame and fortune side of the professional sports world has its pitfalls and one of the MCs starts the book at rock bottom. Definitely check out content warnings as the books deals with gambling addiction and discussions of prior drug addiction.

Michael Zhang has reached the bottom when the book opens. His gambling addiction has led him owing lots of money he doesn’t have to people he really shouldn’t be owing money to at all. A major lapse in judgment results in a brush with the law, his older brother helping out again and a community service stint where he meets the sunshine gardener who manages the place, Bryce. However, Bryce knows the path Michael has been on - he’s battled his own addictions and his problems cost him so much that he still deals with while trying to manage co-parenting with his ex.

I appreciated this being a slow burn romance - both characters realize that they need to sort out things on their own and Michael must prioritize his recovery first before diving into a relationship. An open discussion about addiction and recovery for both characters - one being new on his journey and one being a little farther along but still working every day on his recovery.

A well-earned HEA for these two and I liked that their epilogue gave a glimpse into the new path they are on. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series as Jack seems like such a grump but one who is extremely protective of those he care’s about. I read a complimentary copy and this is my honest and fair review.

A very touching story.

Both Bryce and Michael are recovering addicts; Bryce from drugs and Michael from gambling. There are parts of this story that aren't pretty – because addiction and the problems it causes for Michael are pretty awful – but it is ultimately an uplifting tale of two men who fight their demons so they can be together.

Both MCs have family conflicts. Michael is resentful of his older brother who is also a hockey star and captain of the L.A. Storm. Bryce has issues with his ex-brother-in-law and his ex-wife's new boyfriend. These family dynamics have a huge impact on this story and I loved how everything played out.

This was a great slow-burn romance. Michael finally decides to face up to his addiction. Even though he is very strongly attracted to Bryce, he's afraid that a relationship with him will be trading one addiction for another. I thought it was great that he was able to figure that out and waited until he was in a better place before starting a real relationship with Bryce.

Even though Bryce had a rocky relationship with his ex-brother-in-law, Jack, Jack really came through for Bryce and Michael when they needed him. I loved the teaser for the next book, Shield, and was happy to learn that Jack will be one of the MCs in that story.

A copy of this book was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Michael:
Full of himself, entitled brat who thinks world owes him something without giving anything back, who doesn't know how good was what he had until loosing everything and even then he acts out. He doesn't realize that addiction is shaping and destroying his life and affecting the lives of the people closest to him and trying to help. The road to recovery and to finding the roots of his addiction is hard.
Bryce: A father and recovering addict who worked hard to make something of his life and attone for past mistakes.
Can two recovering addicts make it work?
The odds are not in their favor.
This is a very realistic and brilliantly written story about the downward spiral any addiction inevitably leads to. People often don't realize that gambling addiction is one of the most difficult addictions to fight off, because it takes over your mind so completely. There's no detox, just one step at the time for the rest of your life. I've seen it first hand and it didn't end well...
I loved the individual POW's, but I missed more in depth interaction between MC's, so I couldn't escape the feeling that the second half of the book was a bit rushed. This book should be longer.Nevertheless it's a great read and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

SECOND is the second book in the L.A. Storm series. It can be read as a stand alone.
This book a little darker than the first book as Michael Zhang has to work through his community service at a local community garden and battle his demons regarding what got him to there in the first place.
Bryce is the manager who runs the gardens and is happy to have those needing to work off their sentence there, it's helped him to find his place in life while dealing with recovery.
I liked how this had a slow burn vibe, even though the attraction was there from the start. Both men have a past and present to deal with and needed the time to heal and grow.
Once they do get together, the connection that they share grows ever stronger as they deal not only with the challenges that their addictions have given them, but also the possibilities of a brighter future. I loved them as a pairing, both supportive and bringing something joyous to the other which helped to keep the demons at bay.
I'm looking forward to more in this series.

Bryce and Michael's road to romance was a rocky one.
Their individual experiences before they met, what they had to go through in order to be at a place that they could accept and be there 100% for each other was long. But they did it! They knew what frame of mind they needed to be in for it to be a healthy relationship.
I loved the support these two guys got from family, friends and in Michael's case, even though he didn't see it, co-workers.
From the minute I met Michael I wanted to hug him hard and long whether he liked it or not and I am pretty sure he would have fought me at that point. He was having so many issues and he lost so much. The fact that the stinker fought it for quite a while and had a snarky attitude etc. did not help him.
His soul needed help with the past and until he could accept it, he couldn't accept the love his brother and nieces had for him.
Bryce was dealing with what he did in the past and the results of his actions still bother him.
There was a lot of emotional therapy that needed to happen in this story for both Michael and Bryce.
I just love these two together.
Bryce's amazing son Leo and his landlord added so much to this great story.
I don't want to give any more away. Just know this is a great story.

5/5 honeybees
Now...can we talk about Jack?

Michael "Zeetoo" Zhang has always felt overshadowed by his adoptive brother, Charles, who is also a professional hockey player. Constantly being compared to Charles, Michael struggles with feelings of inadequacy. After a series of bets that involve drinking, Michael suffers a devastating loss, which leaves him homeless. He reluctantly agrees to accept help from Charles. Despite being a hockey star, Michael feels embarrassed to live in a pool house on his brother's property. As part of his sentence, Michael is required to do community service, where he unexpectedly finds solace in a community garden. Bryce Kincaid, who manages the garden, is battling his demons after losing his family and music career due to addiction. Despite their troubled pasts, Michael and Bryce are drawn to each other, finding unexpected healing and companionship in their shared struggles.

If you are expecting a book rife with hockey and team interaction, this won't be the book for you. This book deals with far more gritty, real world issues like addiction, self-destructive behaviour and taking a truly introspective look into what is important and real in one's life.

You'll probably start out truly disliking Michael... in all honesty there isn't much to like, but as he's exposed to the garden, to Bryce and to Bryce's son, you find yourself rooting for his HEA. This book is angstier, rawer and more real than the first book in this series and as long as you're there for it, you'll find a very satisfying HEA. It can be read standalone, but benefits from being the second book in the series.

Great read but a little angsty because both characters are addicts( both different) and want a relationship but can’t go from one addiction and think the other person is going to be that. Though their are a few struggles and the book goes about it fast so it’s not a long wait for them to do the whole relationship thing and it works out, yay! Their good together even though I didn’t like Michael at first, he was selfish, spoiled and mean, thank goodness Bryce came into his life and told him how it’s going to be. I loved Bryce and his son Leo straight away. Then eventually liked Michael:) . Different from the first book in the new series but I enjoyed it! Looking forward to grumpy Jack’s book next!

This is the second book in the LA Storm series and it can stand alone. I liked the first book much better as I wasn’t too crazy about Michael’s character. I figured he would get more appealing and grow on me, but his redemption seemed to be mostly off page and I needed more to connect with him. Bryce was easier to fall for and I felt more of the connection with him that I’d missed with Michael. I never felt invested in their romantic relationship and wasn’t so sure I could see them as even being friends, much less lovers. The addiction portion of the story wasn’t great for me either. I really think that my mood wasn’t right for this story (I’ve DNF’d many books lately), but it could be right for you. (3.5 stars)
