Tales of Lilleforth #1

Il favorito del re

Rate this book

I’m sorry but this was so dreadfully boring. It wasn’t even that the book was bad persé, it’s just that it literally bored me to tears.

Nothing about this relationship managed to capture my interest. They had no chemistry or tension, and none of their interactions were particularly fun to read. It was insta-love to the highest degree, and nothing interesting happened between them.
Thus, despite the intriguing promise of a romance between a king and his stable boy, I did not care for these two at all.

I also wasn’t a big fan of the writing, because even though this is a moderately short book, it felt incredibly long. I couldn’t help but skim over half of it since most of the scenes were just completely irrelevant to the story and were unnecessarily dragged out.

The King's Delight is a sweet and kinky story of a King and Groom. King Leopold and Felix are instantly attracted to one another and have an arrangement, but soon they come to care for one another and fall in love. I loved the bit of Daddy/boy play with spanking. It was sexy and hot! I also enjoyed the humour.

I would say the story was low angst and a fast read, but I enjoyed it to the end! It didn't take itself seriously, and it was very whimsical and a nice read between heavier books. I was initially drawn to this book because of the cover, and glad I picked it up! Sarah Honey is a new to me author who I will definitely keep on my radar!

If you're looking for a light, low angst, sweet and kinky read, this is it!

yeah well, it was okay-ish.

I liked that everyone was really cool at court that for one king Leo was gay, as was the groom Felix, but also that no one who knew batted an eye at them having a fling. It was nice for a change not to deal with homophobic assholes.

What was annoying tho was that Leo is supposed to be 32 but mostly appeared to be not much older than Felix who is only 23.

Other than their fling, their growing feelings for each other and a bit of spanking there was not much happening that could really hold my interest. But I liked the cast of side-characters.

Overall it was somewhat entertaining and full of humorous banter but plotwise neither overly captivating nor memorable.

Nothing here grabbed me, I’m sorry to say.
This just felt like a lukewarm version of a scenario I’d read quite a few times before.

So, to pinpoint this further:

.) Felix was the best part for me, even if his ‘rebellious’ behaviour caused more eye-rolling than chuckles.

.) Leo is totally overdrawn, imo. He is the king, but mostly behaves like a moany teenager. While this (maybe?) could have been amusing, it somehow didn’t hit the right note.

.) The plot is so simplistic and easy, I could hardly believe it. There is quite a bit of potential for at least a little bit of tension, but no, it’s all resolved in a jiffy. And there is very little depth in anything.

.) There is virtually no world building as such, although we do get lengthy description of what seemed really uninteresting details.

.) The humour fell totally flat for me, causing more frowns than laughs.

And finally …I have no idea why the author thought it was a good idea to include some mild BDSM (spanking) in what is otherwise a super fluffy fairytalish story.

I started skimming towards the end, but nothing really held my attention.
Sorry, not for me.

This was enjoyable.

I really liked Felix and Leo, they had good chemistry together.

Felix is around 23, and for the past 6 years he's been away learning how to groom horses and take care of horses. While away, he's gained some experience sexually and has learned he likes to get spanked/whipped and has had his fair share of dalliances. But now, he's feeling the need for something a little more permanent with someone.

He's sowed his wild oats and is now feeling the need to just find one special person.

But when the king, Leopold, 32, sneaks into the stables of the palace at night, to get away from his responsibilities as king for awhile and ride his horse, he and Felix run into each other.

Felix is now the royal groomer, and he's in the stables that night, and he hasn't seen the king in the flesh since he was 12 years old.

So safe to say, he doesn't recognize him, especially when Leo is covered in different clothes that are a little less royal so he could escape detection.

They immediately have an attraction, and they immediately start something sexual together. When Leo calls his horse by her name in the middle of things, to get her to leave them be to their exploits, Felix realizes that he's about to have sex with the king.

With the cat out of the bag, they agree to a sexual relationship. Felix has wanted more with someone, but he just wants Leo too much to say no, and what's one more casual relationship before he finds that special someone, right?

Of course, fairly quickly, these two form a deeper connection, and it doesn't take long for these two to go from casual, to more, even thought they try to deny it.

I do think this was a little rushed between them. There were times I wish the author had spent more time on these two as a couple and really took her time to establish their connection. It was pretty much about sex right away and any connection they made was in between the sex, so I just wanted more of those moments.

Which, the sex was great, and the chemistry in those scenes was great, it just took me awhile to buy the connection of more between them. It did come eventually, for sure, but it just took longer than I would have liked.

Also, near the end, I felt the problem of Leo potentially having to marry a woman to provide an heir was solved too easily. It did wrap things up nicely and these two did get their deserved HEA, but it just felt too easy, the solution that came about. I would have liked to see it be a little more complicated.

But also, for the scope of this story, an easy solution was kind of needed, to wrap this story up in a timely manner, so I didn't dock too many points for it.

It was a little disappointing, but overall it didn't bother me too much. So that, and their relationship being a little too rushed at first, had me giving this one star off.

But, the rest was enjoyable and these two did have chemistry and a certain charm to them. I enjoyed this, overall, so I definitely recommend this.

It just had a few areas that could have used improvement. It was good, though. Two thumbs up from me!

M/M, hea, ku, royalty/Commoner, BDSM
Spice: medium
Angst: low

Plot: Leo is king and Felix takes care of the royal horse. When Felix subdued a horse thief in the night, he's surprised to find the thief is the last person he thought it would be.

My opinion: this story was funny and spicy and while not the most unpredictable it was still enjoyable. I liked Felix and Leo's banter along with Matty's and Leo's friendship.

A silly, funny, low-angst, fairytale-worthy-happy-ending story in which the sassy groom (Felix, and do not be calling him a stableboy!) and the down-to-earth, pouty king (Leopold) are united by their love of spanking (the king) and being spanked (Felix). Also their senses of humor, the fact that Leopold finds it refreshing to spend time with someone who's not deferential to him, and their love of riding. A riding crop also features, in the same configuration as the spanking, and in the absence of horses.

The sex scenes are reasonably hot -- there's little reliance on lazy romance-novel language, which is always nice -- though not in a league with the very best (R.J. Moray, Jess Whitecroft, Daniel May, Misha Horne). That might be my idiosyncratic taste talking.

This isn't a deep book, but it's a lot of fun. I giggled or snorted or laughed out loud several times (Felix, having been cropped and then screwed into the mattress: "You need to lie down and hold me now. I'm a poor, delicate creature and I deserve to be coddled"). High-quality silliness that I think lots of people will find a solid comfort read.

The King's Delight had all of my favorite things:

1. It was short and sweet
2. Low angst
3. Funny without being try hard
4. Under negotiated kink with zero daddy
5. Horse

I really had a good time reading it. Sometimes you want a lowkey book with horses and some spanking. Not at the same time, um... Anyway, The King's Delight was also erratic's delight to read. Highly recommend!

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

"The King's Delight" was freaking adorable.
Lovely and sweet, with a smidge of action and a whole lot of humour and spice (and spanking!)

I absolutely adored it!
Felix and Leo are fantastic protagonists. They're vividly sketched, wholly endearing and hugely lovable. I thought they completed each other perfectly, and the snarky banter between them gave me life. Their romance was fabulous too! I can't tell you how many times I swooned, and I can't tell you how damn swoony Leo was! His pet names for Felix were absolutely LETHAL.

I also looooved the side characters, and I kinda wish a certain badass princess would get her own novel. I have a huge crush on her *sighs*

The writing flowed easily and beautifully, and the plot was fairly simple, but 100% perfect. Even though I'm a sucker for angst and drama, I loved how low-key and sweet and light-hearted this novel was! It was the perfect read for this time of year.

Thank you GRR for the ARC. I received it in exchange for an honest review.

The good
+ Felix not reining himself in when around Leo
+ Felix's father. Seriously, he deserves a 'Best Dad' mug
+ Mattias. He's a great friend
+ Plenty of time spent with the horses
+ Their arrangement. They were so into each other!
+ Felix's boldness in expressing his preferences in the bedroom
+ Leo (sometimes subconsciously) showing Felix he's more than just a convenient bedmate
+ Sophia
+ Felix's fighting skills
+
+

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o I was a little lost on the ages of the main characters. I think they're in their early thirties? [Edit: It was kindly pointed out to me that Felix's age is mentioned in the first sentence of the book. In my defense, I was not yet paying attention...]

I really enjoyed this book. Both characters were a delight, and their banter was great. Actually, most characters were just great (except you, , you little shit). This was lighthearted and oddly romantic for a casual arrangement. I'd definitely recommend this book.

The King's Delight is indeed a delight for the reader.

The whimsical, edgy tone is rooted in the Merlinesque back-and-forths between the king and his saucy horse's groomer. Add to that a cheeky chancellor, who once found and rescued a lost boy-prince from the woods, and the wit reminds us on every page we are in the hands of a writer who knows the territory.

The territory is a kingdom without a queen or an apparent heir. Yet love is spankingly near when the new groomsman on his first day on the job seduces (and/or is seduced by) a certain disguised royal with a fondness for arses!

DNF @ 25%.

The King’s Delight by Sarah Honey is not my delight. I don’t care about these characters. The writing doesn’t hold my interest, and as I suspected, the humour doesn’t work for me. It’s any easy and light enough read, and there’s nothing wrong with the writing. It’s just not sucking me in.

Felix is the Kings royal groom. His father is captain of the royal guard. Felix's main job is to take care of the horses which includes Kinge Leo's precious horse Blackbird. One day while on duty he sees a mystery man trying to take the royal horse. He stops him and makes a proposition to the would be thief. Turns out the "thief" is King Leo.

King Leo finds himself highly attracted to Felix and his honesty. The two start a secret relationship. Problem is King Leo is at an age were he needs to get married and produce an heir. So there is a time limit on his and Felix's relationships. However, the more time these two spend together the closer they get and the more an end is dreaded.

This is a cute low angst romance with a HEA and a sprinkle of kink. I enjoyed it very much.

This is a cute, low angst read that I’ll forget easily but was a great palate cleanser. I did get bored and skimmed a few times but honestly the book is written well and edited well, it just wasn’t very emotional if that makes sense.

I really liked the cover!

Although Felix and the King, Leo, moved on rather too quickly into the horizontal tango - and the smuts were a bit too much for my taste preference, but this one was still enjoyable. It was light, despite there were kidnapping and injuries.

The solution to Leo's proclivity for male partner and problem of providing an heir was a bit too easy. But hey, it gets Leo and Felix together forever, so I couldn't really complaint about that either, could I?

Pretty curious with Mother's story

2.5 stars. Enjoyable on the whole, but kinda unremarkable? The new royal groom mistakes the king for someone else, gives him a lot of backtalk, the king is pretty amused about this and they end up having a sexy interlude that leads to more. It's a fun little premise, and there's plot stuff happening in the background, but it was all just a little flat to me. I wanted more chemistry, more horse stuff, more close-up views of the administration of this kingdom. I could see how the author wanted me to care about relationships outside of the main one, and laid the foundations for that, but it didn't really bear fruit. As for the main relationship... it was cute! Not anything to write home about. There's fair bit of sex and it's fun and kinky and good, but also somehow really flat?? IDK, I just wasn't feeling it. Not that the book was bad in any way; just not a new favourite or anything.

It's like a modern fairy tale. It's fluffy and without much drama, just with a bit. But it all turns out well and in the end everyone is happy and lived together for all eternity. So, for me especially the ending is a bit too fluffy and over the top cute.
Otherwise the book is very well written, I like the style and I like the characters, especially the banter between the king and his groom.
Leo and Felix immediately fall in lust with each other. Maybe a little too fast, but it's nice how the relationship develops bit by bit. I could almost have done without the actual plot of the book, the relationship between the two is the better part of the book. And it's a pretty sweet thing when they discover that their kinks fit perfectly.

Leo’s voice was barely a breath in Felix’s ear. “I promise, sweetheart, that if you misbehave, I won’t hesitate to put you over my knee and spank you till your arse is pink and tender. And if you’re a very good boy, I’ll fuck you afterwards and make you feel it.” Felix couldn’t hold back a groan. Leo tipped Felix’s chin up with a fingertip, holding his gaze. “I need a yes or a no, sweetheart.”
“Y-yes,” Felix stammered out before Leo could change his mind.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

The King’s Delight is a quick, fun read that focuses on the relationship between Felix and Leo. It includes fun tropes like mistaken identity and unrequited love. There was an interesting mix of more contemporary social sensibilities (the king can and does take male lovers) and nebulously historical norms (pretty uncritical acceptance of hierarchy). I thought the juxtaposition worked well most of the time thanks to Honey’s consistent writing and character portrayals.

The story deals with two main questions: how will a relationship between the king and the groom work out and what about the childless king’s line of succession.

On the whole, I thought this was a well-crafted exploration of two men from different classes falling in love while absolutely not meaning to. There’s just enough world building to make the semi-historical (riding horses, copper bathtubs, etc) aspects feel like a part of the characters’ world. If you like spicy romances with a literal bit of slap and tickle (pun intended), then there’s lots of Leo and Felix action and plenty of banter.

"I don't think I'm of the temperament to remain silent and keep watch over the royal arse."
His father gave a wry smile. "The correct term is His Majesty, King Leopold."
Felix shrugged. "You know I've never been good at observing formalities. Which is why, starting tomorrow, I have a job taking care of the royal horse's arse instead."

I really enjoyed Red Heir which this author co-wrote, and when I saw the synopsis and cover I was quite excited to dive into what I hoped was a similarly built story. The worldbuilding is basic fantasy, and I liked the cast of characters that inhabit the castle.

Oh, this was tremendous. His new groom was seducing him. This was the most fun Leopold had had in ages.

We jump right into the spice, not that I'm complaining. Felix was a bit of a minx and I super enjoyed the early scene before he realized who he was seducing! I was pleasantly surprised at the unexpected too, from the outside of this book it doesn't look like something that would have that kind of content! The spice kept the sweetness of their new relationship from becoming cavity-inducing. The plot stayed fairly drama-free from that point - the classic subplot of Leopold potentially needing to marry and sire heirs were there, but you knew from the start it wasn't going to effect the HEA. And to be honest - I thought it would be

"You called me your delight, yesterday. I liked it."
"That's because everything about you delights me. Shall I make it an official title, and appoint you the King's Delight?"
Felix huffed out a laugh of his own. "I don't need a bollocksy title, thank you."

Overall, this gave me that fun hint of Red Heir and Tournament of Losers vibes that was exactly what I was looking for!

I was so looking forward to Sarah Honey's first solo outing, having thoroughly enjoyed her collaborative stories with Lisa Henry.

This was such a joy to read. Funny, imaginative, and completely engaging! I loved Leo and Felix and the dynamic between them which was both hot, playful, and increasingly tender. I really enjoyed how the author conveyed a snapshot overview of Leo's realm and subjects, more than enough to convince the reader and maintain the plot but while concentrating on our couple's developing relationship and the issues that brought between the king and his groom. As genuinely delightful as the title. I can't wait for the next in the series!

A kinky fairytale!

Did I read this book mainly for the cover and the promise of a royal spanking? Yes, I did.
And it absolutely delivered on that part.
I was pleased to see that this wasn’t mainly smut, but there was also an actual plot and romance part!
I really liked the characters and the plot was also very fun, even if not extremely mind blowing, it was fairly obvious.
I would have loved to get to know the two MCs a little more and have more of an actual getting to know each other, conversations between the two of them part, because there actually weren’t a lot of sex scenes and it was meant to be a romance I think.
I was a little shocked about the ending, but it was also fun because I didn’t expect that plot twist at all!

This was a highly enjoyable, though plotless, romance between the king of an imaginary historical kingdom and his mouthy royal groom. It was sweet and sexy and really funny. With fantastic chemistry and banter between the MCs. I found myself smiling the whole time I was reading this. My one complaint is that it was too short and too superficial. Their romance is delicious, but we hardly get a glimpse of anything outside this. It felt like quite a lot of potential for world-building was never realized. It's listed as the start of a series, so here's hoping that we get a bit more depth in subsequent books.

This book was without a doubt a real Delight! If only real life were that easily rearranged!

Delicious, sexy, kinky, adorable, romantic, adventurous, delicate and rough! I had never read anything by this author before and now I'm going to have to read more.

This story was an insta lust that developed into love, dedication, changing mentalities in search of that mythical true love. And sexy AF, pink spanking sexy! Felix and Leo are so hot together it burns all if the kingdom to the damn ground!

What a lovely, fun, quick read!

Felix, a smart-mouthed groom
Leo, King of Lilleforth
A shared love of horseback riding... and spankings!

It's a low angst, kinky yet still sweet, fantasy romance with a HEA! Even the side characters were adorable, and I particularly liked what the solution to the heir problem was.

I loved it and had so much fun reading it!
