Eduardo Sangarcía nació en Guadalajara en 1985. Es maestro en Estudios de Literatura Mexicana. Autor del libro de cuentos El desconocido del Meno (Fondo Editorial Tierra Adentro, 2017), su obra ha sido distinguida con premios como el Julio Verne de Ciencia Ficción por “Ecce Homo” (2005) y el Latinoamericano de Cuento Edmundo Valadés por “El elefante”. Buenísimo, fuerte, doloroso, originalmente escrito, excelente libro, bien merecido premio.

A mi me encanta la forma, me entusiasma la valentía de hacer las cosas de manera novedosa, creo que le funciona bien, aunque leo que a algunos les cuesta trabajo al inicio.

Me lo leo sin detenerme, adictivo.

Y claro, muchas referencias no conozco, ignorante yo.

My Review: It is astonishing to me that this is a debut novel. Assured, boldly complex storytelling voice meets trenchant story of a woman's fate being determined by men who only see her surface beauty and project their own sin and evil onto her.

I can't shake the uneasy, repellent lushness of Anna's torture by the churchmen. It is a big hurdle to me when women's suffering is presented in a prurient way; I was also a bit underwhelmed by Klaus's characterization stopping at stoical devotee of Anna's.

Antes de hablar de la historia debo tocar el tema más emblemático de la novela: la forma en que está escrita. En un principio, y en especial si es tu primer libro del autor, sera complicado en lo que te acostumbras en que toda la novela no existen los puntos finales. Luego hay secciones que son algo complicadas en lo que decidirás cómo leerlas con un uso irregular de la doble columna. Pero la interesante historia sobrepone a estas dificultades iniciales.

La historia es muy interesante ya que analiza al fenómeno de las brujas desde un punto de vista muy diferente: el humano y mortal. La mayoría de los libros de ficción hablan sobre cómo fue la vida de las brujas, pero son raras las que hablan sobre toda la experiencia a detalle sobre el proceso de encarcelamiento, juicios y finalmente la hoguera.

No diré más pero si diré que es muy interesante. Hay mucho simbolismo con mucha critica histórica, religiosa y social. Muy bien!

guadalajara-born author eduardo sangarcía’s english debut, the trial of anna thalberg (anna thalberg), is the tale of the titular peasant, the accusations of witchcraft made against her, and the ensuing case to determine her guilt — and ultimate fate. set hundreds of years ago, the novel blends classic elements of the genre, but it is sangarcía’s prose style which stands out most of all, as the mexican short story writer and novelist’s chapter-long sentences add a richness to the foreseeable narrative (though the ending is unexpectedly solid!). the trial of anna thalberg is a satisfying work, sort of a monte cristo meets kafka meets the crucible. centuries come and go, corruption and persecution stay exactly the same.

what lies above is the same as what lies below: sound and fury reign even in the celestial spheres. there is no end to it, woman; that is why i sleep.

Una historia escrita de una forma muy interesante, me atrevo a decir que original porque hasta ahora no había visto algo así. Un tema conocido por todos, la cacería de brujas no es nuevo, la historia es interesante, con unas frases muy buenas de reflexión y crítica.
Tuvimos la oportunidad de leerlo en conjunto y llegamos a la conclusión que está historia se presenta para recordarnos que no debemos olvidar nuestra historia, porque de una o otra manera la “cacería de bruja” la seguimos viendo. Seguimos viendo la ignorancia y la “fe ciega obsesiva” en muchas personas que en lo personal me causan terror.
Es una historia que le doy 4 Estrellas porque el final me agradó, aunque pudiese llegar a ser predecible, me dio una grata satisfacción.

Anna Thalberg has the misfortune of being both redheaded and pretty in a village in Germany where those conditions are apparently unusual enough to arouse suspicion and resentment. A neighbor denounces her as a witch and her fate is sealed.

This is, sadly, not unrealistic. It is not a spoiler to say that Anna is doomed, since the author makes that clear from the outset, and if you are looking for a tale of miraculous escape, look elsewhere. To say I enjoyed a book based on the historical truth that women (and sometimes men, but mostly women) were tortured to extract confessions and then executed -- that there was, once one had been accused, no possibility of escape since torture would continue until a confession was inevitably provided -- would be, well, sick.

And yet this was a beautiful book, with its share of courage and commitment, selflessness and loyalty. Amidst the horror and depravity of the (again, sorry to say, historically accurate) bloodlust of witch trials, there are enough threads of human nobility (of mind, of manner, not of "bloodline") to sustain a reader who doesn't enjoy just being depressed for no purpose. I wouldn't describe the book as depressing at all, actually, unless of course it reveals to you for the first time that this sort of thing actually happened, which is truly depressing. But if you already know that, then this is a beautiful book.

It's also very short, and idiosyncratic in its presentation. Just a few hours cover to cover.
This is a short book, idiosyncratic but compelling in style. I wasn't familiar with this author (a writer in Mexico -- the book is translated from Spanish and as far as I can tell the translation is brilliant) but will look for other books of his.

From the instant I delved into Eduardo Sangarcía's "The Trial of Anna Thalberg", I found myself immersed in a world of moral ambiguity, individual integrity, and societal scrutiny. The narrative vividly portrays Anna, a character whose depth and complexity serve as the novel's greatest strengths.

The storyline unfolds with a blend of suspense and intricate legal intricacies, maintaining high tension while delving into themes of justice versus morality, and the public's impact on individual lives. Although I found the pacing to be uneven at times, with certain parts dragging, the story's essence remained compelling. The narrative is steeped in moral intricacies that I found both challenging and captivating.

Yet, I couldn't shake a hint of disappointment with some secondary characters, who felt more like plot devices than fully developed individuals. Due to this and the pacing issues, I rated it 3 out of 5 stars. It's a admirable book, stirring frustration and prompting reflection on its moral themes.

Set in the 1530s Holy Roman Empire during the Protestant Reformation, the short story begins with Anna in her hut preparing supper for her husband Klaus. Then two men burst in and handcuff her, in a very rough manner, they place a hood over her head and throw her in the back of a wagon. She’s been taken away to the Marienberg Fortress, on the assumption that she is a witch. There, she will be hung and then burned at the stake which her village is very happy about it. When Klaus returns from his days labour in the fields, he cannot find Anna and their hut has been ransacked with all their valuables that they had taken and everything else, not of value left behind, his dinner burning on the fire. The village is silent when he knocks on their doors asking for help to locate his wife. But one man comes forward and tells Klaus what has happened, and so begins his journey to go to find his wife.

After reaching the fortress, Klaus is told that Anna is not going to be released because she is a witch and they have testimonies regarding it. So he turns and leaves and goes in search of his priest, Father Friedrich, hoping that he will be able to help in the release of Anna. . To find out whether Father Friedrich and Klaus were able to free Anna or what did they fail and she was burnt at the stake? You’ll just have to read the book to find out which won’t take long as it is only a short read.

During the course of reading this book the testimonials are then presented to the reader. They are mainly based around superstitions rather than actual facts, and I have to say the names of these villages are so unreal and unfortunately, some are totally unpronounceable. But then the book has been translated from the Spanish language version, and I have to say the punctuation is terrible, there isn’t any. There are no question marks, quote marks or full stops, there are just a lot of commas. However, it is a very good read. Although It made me sad thinking about how the people in the past were actually tortured and killed for being witches who were in fact just normal people who are maybe a little different but innocent nonetheless.

Dios no aprieta, solo ahorca, quizás para hacerte confesar.
¡Qué libro! Narrado de una forma singular que al principio cuesta trabajado, pero que luego se siente fresca y renovadora, el autor nos enfrasca en esta historia llena de suspenso y oscuridad, oscuridad que termina por ser iluminadora. Es una historia irremediablemente anclada al presente, es un reto, porque absolutamente todo es un riesgo, este libro se arriesga y gana, y como fijo Cristina Rivera Garza, si esta es su primera novela agárrense.

This was a dark, dark book with some very profound observations on religion and humanity. While this was set in the Protestant Reformation, I found myself surprised by how many passages I felt could still ring true in today's world. While this is about one woman and what happened to her during the Wurzberg witch trials, it is scary how it might feel like these things could still happen in our modern day world. Indeed, the tag line says it all: "Does evil lurk in the shadows of the forest, or in the human heart?"

Quelle lecture difficile, de par la construction des phrases et la mise en page. Une majuscule en début de chapitre, un point à la fin, party de virgules entre les deux. On finit par trouver le rythme, mais c’est vraiment épuisant! J’ai dû sauter plusieurs passages car bien que le style d’écriture soit riche et épatant, j’ai réalisé que je ne comprenais même plus ce que je lisais. J’ai maintenant besoin d’une bd pour reposer mon cerveau!

Vaya sorpresa que ha sido Anna Thalberg, una novela distinta y refrescante en el panorama de las letras mexicanas. Siendo honesta, los tres primeros capítulos me sorprendieron bastante, y no estaba segura si estaba disfrutando la estructura narrativa de la novela. La historia se sitúa en la Alemania del siglo XVII, en donde una joven campesina, Anna Thalberg, es aprehendida por la Inquisición tras ser denunciada por una vecina celosa de la joven, ya que, según ella, está provocando la lujuria de su marido. Una tarde, mientras el esposo de Anna está fuera de casa, llegan los enviados de los inquisidores a detenerla, destruyendo su casa, y llevándosela para su juicio. Su esposo nunca más la verá y Anna será sujeta -como miles de otros hombres y mujeres en esa época – de una tortura brutal para obligarla a confesar su adoración al diablo y sus pecados.

Como en tantas otras historias, Anna era una mujer inocente, víctima de una época de furor y rencor entre vecinos, amigos y conocidos. Despertando dudas al llegar a la población después de contraer matrimonio, los vecinos la envidiaban por su belleza, recelaban de su color de cabello cobrizo y sus ojos, y solo eso la hizo sospechosa de brujería. Todos declararon en su contra, negándose a prestarle a apoyo a su marido y antes bien, aprovechándose de la situación, saqueando su casa y sus pertenencias, mientras él intentaba rescatarla.

Si bien el argumento de la novela no es nuevo, sí lo es la forma en que Eduardo Sangarcía construye esta historia. Como mencioné, los primeros capítulos me destantearon bastante, ya que carece de signos de puntuación. Para los puristas de la literatura (entre los cuales yo misma me considero), este tipo de experimento puede no resultar de nuestro agrado pero en este caso, puedo decir que el autor hizo que funcionara y que, de hecho, aporte al relato. La prosa sin puntuación, atropellada, refleja el terror, la ansiedad que están viviendo los protagonistas, sumergidos en un espiral de eventos e injusticias que no pueden detener ni controlar. Por ejemplo, los capítulos de cuando el confesor intenta obtener la “verdad” de Anna son ingeniosos y contundentes -un coro de voces en donde se simula el diálogo, pero en donde uno de ellos no escucha mientras la otra le abre su vida. Visualmente la escritura rompe también con lo estándar, pero contribuye a adentrar al lector en los pensamientos de los protagonistas. Con ello, se transmite el terror y el dolor de esta mujer, atrapada en un infierno en la tierra. Como ella dice, “antes de conocer al inquisidor, no había conocido mayor mal.”

Asimismo, considero que Sangarcía logra recrear esa Europa que recién intentaba salir de la Edad Media y en la cual sobrevivía la superchería, el temor a lo desconocido, etc., y esa construcción del ambiente y el contexto me pareció espectacular. Con frecuencia me he preguntado porque en México no se escribe mucha novela histórica y más aquella ubicada en otros países y épocas. Creo que en parte por el rigor de investigación que ello conlleva, la responsabilidad de recrear contextos históricos de los que no somos partes. Sin embargo, esa cortísima novela del autor lo logra de forma estupenda. Sin duda un texto sorprendente y rico en donde se puede ver el oficio del escritor.

Si bien, no conecté con la historia tanto como me hubiese gustado, principalmente por el uso de un lenguaje muy pesado, quiero resaltar algunos puntos positivos: odié a Vogel, que fastidio de personaje, el autor arma a un sujeto que de solo imaginarlo te transmite muchísimo malestar y le da cohesión a la trama. Y la forma en que terminó la historia también me pareció estupenda, el último capítulo es muy satisfactorio y la frase final, sorprendente.

No tengo más que decir, solo que tal vez le dé una segunda leída en algún futuro no muy lejano: pienso que este libro es como esas canciones que no te convencen tanto la primera vez, pero ya después les vas descubriendo cosas.

una historia de injusticias, celos y dolor pero sobretodo el horror de una época. Entre los siglos XV y XV tuvo lugar la etapa más cruda y cruenta de la Inquisición en Europa, siendo en este momento en el que encontraremos a Anna una inocente campesina que es acusada de brujería por sus vecinos únicamente por el simple hecho de recelar se su belleza.
A lo largo de estas páginas con una gran maestría y pluma impecable del autor conoceremos de la mano de Anna la maldad humana pero también la inocencia, una inocencia e incomprensión de la crueldad humana que nos llevará a plantearnos junto a los personajes los propios designios de Dios, o mejor dicho, los que el hombre decide que sean, usando el nombre de Dios con el fin de cometer estas atrocidades.
A lo largo de estas páginas conoceremos parte de la negra historia de nuestra raza, consiguiendo que empaticemos con la protagonista y nos den ganas de gritar planteándonos ¿Porqué? ¿Porqué tanta crueldad? ¿Porqué tanto odio sobretodo a las mujeres?
Un relato desgarrador e interesante que no podrás parar de leer. ¿Si lo recomiendo? Por supuesto.

J'ai choisi ce roman par hasard, en me promenant dans les rayons de la bibli et j'ai tout de suite été happée. Une lecture difficile en raison du thème mais poignante ! Au niveau de la forme : admirable. Je n'avais jamais rien lu de tel ; les pensées des personnages se chevauchent sans qu'on s'en rende compte... C'est la première fois que je lis un roman où j'ai accès aux pensées et aux paroles des personnages de façon simultanée ! Du grand art.

L'histoire m'a intéressée mais je n'ai pas aimé le style. Un phrase commence par une majuscule et se termine par un point et les règles de ponctuation contribue à lui donner un rythme. Malheureusement ce n'est pas le cas ici.
J'aurais préféré une histoire plus dense, plus développée avec notamment une fenêtre sur la vengeance mais écrite dans un style qui respecte les règle. L'auteur est allemand et peut-être que ces règles n'existent pas de l'autre côté du Rhin, mais moi, ça m'a dérangée dans ma lecture tant et si bien que je me suis demandé si j'allais arriver au bout.

Imagine being torn from your home, arrested, but unsure what the accusations against you are initially, and feeling even more baffled as you are physically and emotionally tormented, your dignity shredded, as you fight the mendacious claims your fellow townspeople have made.

Imagine arriving home to find your wife missing, and setting off on a fervent search to find her, and then save her, while your indifferent neighbors fail to give you answers and hunger rips away at your belly.

If you cannot yet feel the desperation, the exasperation, and the confusion, you will as you consume Eduardo Sangarcía’s feverish prose. He delivers you into this historical setting without letting you take a breath through a series of run-on sentences that properly convey the precise anguish of it all.

I will forever be haunted by The Trial of Anna Thalberg, and by the knowledge that had I been born a couple centuries earlier, I would have surely been burned at the stake. Envy, gossip, and lust are murderous things, and the terrifying trend of women’s history is trying so hard to reinvent itself. The raw relevance of this novel made it the scariest book I’ve read in quite some time. As an avid horror reader, you must know that sentence holds weight.

Anna Thalberg conoce la traición por medio de su aldea, cuando la mayoría de sus vecinos la acusan de brujería y le dan la espalda a ella y a su marido. Como resultado, está mujer deberá enfrentar un juicio que todos saben que terminará en muerte, y que, antes de ello, deberá intentar sobrevivir las inclemencias de un inquisidor que no conoce la compasión y pareciera deleitarse con el dolor ajeno.

Las obras galardonadas con el premio Achar casi tienen garantía. Esta es una novela de prosa diferente y con una combinación de recursos literarios inesperados. El uso del lenguaje es sumamente cuidado, se antoja elegante y preciso casi en cada palabra. La historia por si sola ya resultaba interesante y combinada con el estilo del autor terminar por ser una muy grata experiencia. La protagonista transmite su angustia en todo momento y se logra percibir la evolución del personaje pese a lo breve del relato. Aunque no es el favorito de la colección, resulta un gran libro.

La expectativa era alta para este libro y quizá por lo mismo me decepcionó aún más.

No entiendo el motivo del "estilo" de escritura, sin mayúsculas, puntos finales, etc... Además hay tramos en los que la redacción es cansada a más no poder "y esto y aquello y tal y cual y... Y... Y..." ¿Que acaso no se conoce las comas? Que bueno, si me dices que esta escrito así porque intenta asemejar la escritura antigua bueno... Te lo compro.

A mí parecer hay mejores formas de maquetar o destacar cosas en el libro, no esté doble columnado raro sin sentido. Para eso hay tipos de letra, guiones, etc... Que si, podrías usar la doble columna, pero ponlo en cursiva si es un pensamiento o pon un guión si es un diálogo.

Eso mi queja de lo "técnico" del libro, ahora bien... El contenido: SUPERFICIAL. No hay otra forma de describirlo, siento que se ha quedado corto en el tema que quería tratar, aunque sonaba interesante y prometedor termina siendo bastante mediocre. Ni siquiera sentí que me transmitirá el dolor de los personajes o sufrimiento. Además entre tantos personajes en un libro tan corto se queda bastante flojo con todos. Lo que si me gustó fue el final y con el final me refiero a la venganza de Anna jaja fuera de eso fue bastante mediocre.

No es mi tipo de lectura, aunque he de reconocer que me hizo releerlo en varias ocasiónes por el tipo de narrativa que uso el autor, a manera de diálogo pero con un dialogo diferente donde no resulta tan obvio entenderse, es un guión entre pensamientos y el subconciente, entre lo que se dice y lo que se piensa, y se agradece por que no me habia topado con un libro similar a este.

La historia nos cuenta el pasaje de Anna una joven que es acusada de ser bruja, pero ¿realmente lo es?

En general de esto va este libro, sin mayor pretensión que ambierntarnos en una época específica y mostrarnos personajes con errores y miedos.

En general me gustó. La temática es fuerte, dolorosa. El autor te transmite la angustia de los personajes y sientes la impotencia de ser testigo de las injusticias que se cometen por un exceso de poder en manos de gente mezquina.
Lo que no me gustó, en lo personal, fue la forma en que está escrito; para mí no aporta nada al relato y sólo complica la lectura. Siento que el autor sólo quería hacerse notar con esos recursos, pero quién soy yo para juzgar, al final le dieron un premio al libro.

Anna Thalberg, jeune femme éblouissante aux cheveux de feu, vit sa vie tranquille dans la pauvreté avec son mari Klaus. Mais dût à sa beauté et du fait qu’elle ne parle pratiquement à personne, sa voisine Gerda la déteste au plus haut point, surtout que le mari de cette dernière tourne toujours le regard vers Anna quand elle passe.
