Power and Treachery

Rate this book
Friday, 6am. Three powerful people die simultaneously at a luxury estate on the banks of Loch Lomond.

When the G7 summit comes to Loch Lomond, DI Jade Tanner and her team are on high alert. But they aren’t expecting three delegates from three of the most powerful countries to all die in suspicious circumstances - in separate locations, but at the same time.

Are the deaths linked? If so, how did the killer or killers get away? And can forensic psychologist Dr Petra McBride help Jade solve the case before there’s an international incident?

Power and Treachery is the third part in the bestselling McBride & Tanner crime series, featuring characters from the DI Zoe Finch and Dorset Crime series.

My name's Rachel McLean and I write stories you can't put down, with characters you'll be rooting for.

I'm best known for my Dorset Crime series, which has sold over a million copies. The first book in that series, The Corfe Castle Murders, won the 2021 Kindle Storyteller Award.

Here's what Clare Balding (the lead judge) had to say about the book:

'I particularly enjoyed the detail of the landscape and the humorous oddities of Dorset life. I enjoyed the richness of the characters, complexity of life for a working mother who is thrown into a new environment and has to prove herself, all over again.'

But The Corfe Castle Murders is by no means my only book. I've published five series and am working on two new ones, all of which connect. You'll find characters from each series in one or more of the other ones, so you (and I) get to follow them as they take on new challenges.

For example:

DCI Lesley Clarke is Zoe's boss in the DI Zoe Finch series and then moves to Dorset where she becomes the star of the Dorset Crime series.
DS Mo Uddin is Zoe's best friend and sidekick, then moves to Scotland for the McBride & Tanner series.
DC Tina Abbott is a key character in the Dorset Crime series and plays an important role in the new Lyme Regis Women's Swimming Club series of mysteries which stars her mum, Annie.
Zaf Williams starts off in the DI Zoe Finch series then moves to London and is one of the stars of the London Cosy Mysteries series (along with his colleague Diana and Gus the cat).
Dr Petra McBride appears in no fewer than three series and I'm planning a new series for her in 2026.
And not to be outdone, Zoe Finch has two series in which she stars: the DI Zoe Finch series of 'Deadly' books, and the Cumbria Crime series.
Once you get to know these characters, you'll find plenty of books to keep you entertained. And I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.

You can read a full list of the series and books on my books page. Each series is designed to be read in order but which series you go for first is really up to you.

I enjoyed this British detective story set in Scotland with familiar characters and a good plot.

The story had a political feel but with undercurrents of something more. I liked that the personal lives of the detectives developed the characters as well as suiting the plot.

Well-written and engaging.

Jade and her team are told to leave but not one to give up easily Jade instructs her team to try and find out of any links to the victims.
What they find out uncovers more secrets that have close links to someone in the CCU team.

Power and Treachery

I’m getting used to the Scottish series now and I have to say it’s really good. If anyone has any doubts then give it a go. I’m sure you’ll see it’s worth it.
This particular book was a political drama and a nasty one at that. People politicians dropping dead from supposedly natural causes!! Zoe, Mo, Patty, Stuart & Petra all get together to solve the case. Which gets blocked at every turn.

What a Great Plot!

Such an interesting premise...and it helps that I am in the exact locale at which the story is based. So mentions of roads, lochs, villages, etc. are newly familiar to me. Stuart is becoming more human and the romance is starting to heat up. What will happen to Petra? And will Jade ever get some rest? On to the next exciting installment...

The kind of story that makes you hope there’s more to come.

A good storyline with intriguing characters that you want to find out more about.
I wasn’t sure about it at first as I find political plots with obstructive people a bit stressful but the team soon sorted it out.

Make sure you have chocolate royals, or tunnocks tea cakes, or whatever you call little biscuits with a dome of marshmallow over a dob of jam, covered in chocolate when you’re getting towards the end. You’re going to want to eat some.

Good read

Good to read about Jade and the team again. It certainly gives room for thought that this kind of thing could go on and would be covered up y the powers that be of course. However I enjoyed the book.

Liked the first 2 books better. The characters are likable, but none are fully developed. Three murders within an hour or so at a G7 summit didn't feel realistic, nor did the investigations (or lack thereof) seem possible. More murders ensue and the conclusion felt rushed and implausible.

A page turner

An international summit ends abruptly when three delegates die, simultaneously, of supposed natural causes. The team are taken o of the case for political reasons but follow the information they have. A bit of a weak ending, I thought.

Power and Treachery

Another great book from this author. I certainly didn't see the extra little twist towards the end.
Like all series by this author the stories of the main characters build book by book.
On to the next one!

enjoyable but not overchallenging crime story- there are minor links to other series by the author which clearly make sense if you have read them as well
