Having purchased this book, I decided to read a biography of da Vinci before starting on it. I was glad to have done so and felt better prepared for tackling this book. There are biographical notes for each section but they are relatively brief and do not give a rounded picture of the man. The text associated with the notebooks mostly concerns a history of each following da Vinci's death. However, already being aware of the historical context, added to the enjoyment of reading/looking through this volume. I recommend it as an adjunct to any biography of the man.
This was a far smaller format than I expected. Nevertheless, good quality images. What struck me as curious is that no where in the book, it is mentioned that Leonardo wrote right to left and mirrored. It was not until half way through the book that I googled what was going on, whether they scanned the pages mirrored by accident or what happened? For a book on Leonardo, I would expect this to be mentioned. Besides this, it has a high focus on the painting and only very limited information on his science. It is written like 'This codex is about movements in water', which does not dat anything on what he said on the movements of water. All in all, a bit too generic for my taste.
