They said she was the illegitimate daughter of a recently deceased millionaire. Because a horrible accident had wiped out her memory, she was recuperating at the Yorkshire estate of her father's cousin - enigmatic James Bentley.
She wondered about James's relationship with her father's wife, Laura. And she was puzzled by the reasons behind Laura's incredible malice toward her.
While Jessica desperately tried to piece together her memories, she had to struggle with her compelling attraction to James. If only she didn't feel he was keeping something important from her...

Re Dark Mosaic - AM is giving us more of her singular brand of skeevy squickiness - which I must admit I have enjoyed a time or two, but this one just sorta missed the boat for me.
Maybe AM was having some writer's block, cause she had to go to that old HP standby, AMNESIA. Which as we all know is a guaranteed place in the firmament of HPlandia. But this is AMNESIA with a twist, the h has a doppelganger, but isn't actually related to the woman who could be her double.
The two ladies meet on a train and the h is a textile designer who is seeking a position outside of the rising expense of London and her unrelated duplicate is a streetwise illegitimate young lady who has just inherited the whole of her unknown father's vast textile empire. We find that the doppelganger's late, unlamented father was also married and the widow wife has pretty much been left high and dry when the will was read. The widow is NOT happy about this, in fact she is pretty much fit to be tied and plotting revenge.
The H is a 'cousin' of the deceased's wife and has been in love with her for twenty years. It seems he met the wife first and took her home, but she wasn't into poor horse stud owners and threw herself at the H's wealthy cousin instead. She married the cousin and then continued to try it on with the H, (and probably succeeded once or twice,) for the next few decades.
The H did marry another woman, but he did not love her like he did his cousin's wife and she died right after having the H's daughter. The daughter hates the widowed wife, she accuses her of being slime swilling parasitic witch. She isn't wrong in her estimation, the widow wife never has anything good to say to the daughter and is maniacally possessive of the H.
The widow wife is now all aflutter, cause her deceased husband pretty much cooked her mercenary goose when he left everything to his unknown daughter. The widow wants to overturn the will, cause all she got is a life share in her former house until she remarries and small annuity. She is clearly angling for a proposal from the H, and she is also determined to usurp the woman who actually inherited.
In the way of HPlandia, the train the young ladies are on has a massive wreck and only the h survives. She is incorrectly identified as the illegitimate heiress, but she can't say whether she is or not cause AMNESIA strikes once again. So when she wakes in the hospital, the H is sent by the widow woman to distract the h while the widow plots to get the will overturned.
The H is attracted to the h, but he fights it in his manipulations with the widow wife to cheat the h of her presumed inheritance. (Both the H and widow believe the h is the illegitimate daughter.) They keep the h in the dark about the will and the extent of the inheritance and the H keeps her sequestered on his horse breeding and training estate while the h recovers.
The h strikes up a friendship with the H's daughter and quickly finds out about the will, the H and widow woman's machinations to keep her ignorant and also concludes that the H was having a retaliatory affair with his cousin's wife.
In fact most of the middle of the book is a frustrating back and forth between the H and h where she makes some accurate assessments about just what kind of relationship the H and widow have and the H acts all offended, doles out a few punishing kisses and the h retreats behind AMNESIA confusion.
It was highly irritating, cause the h was right and because of AM's plot devicing, the h did not follow thru on the logical conclusion to the her assessment. Namely that the H and widow are working together to disinherit her, along with some H subbing the h for the woman he currently can't have because of mourning periods and he wants the widow to dance to his tune. The H is tired of being the widow's lap puppy. But instead of domineeringly seducing the widow and making her suffer, he takes his lust out on the h, who utters an unknown man's name unconsciously as the H is ravishing her luscious lips just for a little extra plot manipulation.
This goes along for the majority of the book, until the h's sketch book is recovered and the h realizes who she really is when she meets her former tutor who seduced her, stole her textile designs and is now trying to steal the rest of them.
The h gets a job at a textile firm and leaves the H and the whole incestuous widow wife situation far behind. Then the H's daughter calls her up and asks her to come over for supper, the H is supposedly away out of town and the daughter misses the h's friendship. The h shows up and the H cuts his losses by proposing to the h, after a suitable boudoir bounce.
The widow wife got the dead husband's estate as the next of kin after the named heiress's confirmed death and dumped the H, so he figured he would get back at her by marrying the h, who is a pushover anyways.
The next time we see the h and H, they are riding horses and the h announces her pregnancy and the H is gloating that he has another thing to rub in his ex widow wife lover's face for the HEA.
This book was pretty ick and sadly, it wasn't even well done ick. The story was so lackluster that I don't think even AM believed the H really loved the h and she sure did not convince me that the h actually bought into the H's version of things. The OW widow wasn't even entertaining in evil schemingness, she was just sad and pathetic, as was the H for being so obviously whipped by her.
For skeevy squick factor tho, this one gets major points - so keep it in mind if you swallowed poison and need to vomit but have no syrup of ipecac handy, a quick read of the last 30 pages may save your life and you can thank AM's HPlandia.

James is a a$$hat masquerading as the hero of the story...since there were no other main men in the story I think he won default the role of hero. The story begins where two young ladies who resemble each other are both on a train.... the story truly takes off as the train crashes and only one survives...with amnesia.
One of the girls jessica has just been identified as the heiress to her recently deceased fathers estate, she had no idea about him and neither did his family.... a hateful bi7ch of a wife Laura, a cousin James (who has loved the hateful step monster for 20 plus years, they (laura and James) unite to "manage" Jessica while she dfoesnt have a memory...Laura is hateful to her (as well as to the male leads 16 year old daughter) which he allows as he is so P whipped by this evil hateful vain and insidous old bitty that his stupidity in admiring her as well as slobbering over her apparently her whole marriage as well as dry humping her leg since the death of his cousin. (sorry.,..but read it..and then deny it)... the heroine of course is NOT jessica, she is ceci a textlie designer who is strapped by a lack of memory between the p whipped male lead and the hateful old step mother, where they jerk her and he more or less bullies her the entire time... but come across a few kisses for our heroine (while still bagging the old bag) and she is in LOVEE... there is a absolutely unbelievable HEA that doesn't entail the evil old bitty getting hers (in fact she gets the whole cake..the heroine gets the stupid man)...hated it!
this was just outrageous! hero was actually in love wid OW who was totally callous and bitchy. yet, james wud find all sorts of excuses for her. he let himself be manipulated. he watched her marry his cousin, yet still yearned for her and believed she loved him!? it was also unbelievable dat he wud fall for ceci. she's really just a kid. how can a man of his age be attracted to her!? the book is worth a read. i disliked it as hero was so dumb!
Ah gross she called out another guy's name while he was making love to her..ok..no! This was not my kind of book at first I did not know where or how they where going to have her recover her memory. I did not like that she was a foolish idiot who slept with her tutor yuck. I hate books like that but it was not a bad book just not my cup if tea.
2006 Review Although I thought it was sort of typical storyline girl is mistaken for the other girl, amnesia, etc. Iliked the heroine and I thought she was cool. At first I wasn't too sure of the hero but I'm glad the author made sure that the reader knew the hero didn't sleep with the father's wife, etc. I like my heroes, ya know, pretty much clean and definitely holds the heroine as number one, hee hee. I also liked the ending. I thought it was sweet that the hero had to get his daughter's help to hook up with the heroine AND I also liked the fact that we got to see what happened to them a few months later after their "happy ending" instead of sometimes having the standard ending of them just kissing, going to have sex - the end.
Loved this one! The amnesia plot was fun, and though a few more “illicit” kisses wouldn’t have hurt, the fact that they eventually consummated was both sweet and HOT!
The age-gap was elegantly managed, adding to the frisson, and it was nice that she got to be a career girl (at least for a time).
These books have to fit in a certain length and the denouement is rather quick. It could easily have had another 20k words or so: instead there’s a big jump-cut after The Revelation and the Larry stuff is shovelled in there as more of an afterthought.
But still, an interesting and sexy read, which I highly recommend!
Can't remember much of the book but my ratings have always been based on fairness and likability for me, so the book have been on of those 'on the fence' type novels for me. As I usually rate them three stars. Certainly because they are enjoyable but something always holds me back from four staring it!
Usually, I like amnesia stories, but this one had too many flaws. I didn't appreciate the h unwittingly taking a dead girl's place. While the deceased young woman was no one to rave about, I still didn't like it that she had to die for the sake of the story.
I also didn't like it that at the beginning the h was in love with the OW, someone he should have gotten over long ago, as she dumped him to marry his rich cousin (the father of the dead girl, who everyone thinks is the h, including the h). He got married and had a daughter with a woman he married because she was the opposite of then OW, sweet, kind and gentle, rather than a self-centered, selfish gold-digger. He got a bit of revenge in knowing that he was reasonably happy in his marriage, while the OW was only financially content.
Still, he never stopped loving her, and after both his wife and her husband croaked, they resumed their affair. Talk about STUPID!!! You'd think he'd have more pride than that! He even planned to marry her as soon as the will was settled, and took her side over his daughter's, when it was plain that the OW was nasty to her and made snarky comments that made the girl even more self-conscious. She had a bit of a mouth on her as well, but who could blame her?
Both the H and OW want to keep the h in the dark about her inheritance for the time being, as she intended to sell the properties and businesses, which would put people out of work, and take over the mansion where the "grieving widow" lived. Of course, that was the real daughter's intentions, the h knew nothing about anything, having survived a train crash with belongings of the daughter being mistaken for her own.
Yes, the whole thing was way over-the-top, and for all its promise of drama and entertainment, it all fell really flat. For most of the book, the H and h don't have much confrontation, emotions are held in check (except for two kisses, one that happened after the H got drunk after arguing with the OW, and the h calls him by another man's name, talk about awkward) and his thoughts seem to be more with the OW, while the h's time is mostly spent getting to know his daughter and trying to recover her memory. That's pretty lame too, as there are only little bits and pieces that don't lead to anything, until the end.
Then, it's as if the author had a sudden adrenaline rush, and everything happens at once. The OM makes a very brief appearance, the h faints, the next thing you know her memory's back and she's working where she was supposed to be before her memory went bye bye. (How convenient! After all those weeks the job was still waiting for her!) It seems the OM was her tutor at design school that she made the mistake of getting naked with, while he just used her body to steal her designs! And yet, she still thought longingly of him while making out with the H, even if it was subconsciously. Talk about DUMB!!!
And now, with the H so hung up on the OW, and the h so hung up on the OM, we're supposed to believe that they just tossed all those feelings aside and suddenly realized how much they love each other, instead! OH, COME ON!!!!
The OW an OM disappear from the story without any good-bye confrontations (totally ridiculous), and then the H and h hit the sheets like a couple of horndogs, and the next thing you know, they're married, she's pregnant, and the daughter's delighted at being a big sister, even if she'll be almost 17 by the time the kid pops out.
This book never should have popped out of the h's head!
