ABOUT THE AUTHOR
GL Robinson is the godchild of Georgette Heyer. She writes Regency Romances in a very proper English style with a good dash of humor. As the product of a convent boarding school in the south of England in the 1950's and early 60's, she has a very proper English style herself, which you will be able to tell if you listen to the recordings of the first chapters of her novels on her website: https://romancenovelsbyglrobinson.com, where you can also sign up for a free short story.

She met her American husband in Brussels where she was working at the time the UK joined the European Union (or Common Market, as it was then called). After retiring from a career as a French professor in upstate New York, she happily swapped Existentialism for Romance and since 2018 has written 11 Regency novels. They all feature feisty heroines against a real historical background. She has also begun a contemporary crime trilogy featuring hunky ex-special forces Miles O'Malley. She's in love with him, but don't tell her husband!

This book wasn't perfect. The pacing was too slow through the first half and I could have done without some of the heroes side of the story. I don't need to read about how often he takes back his philandering first wife before he finally divorces her. I preferred Octavia's side of the story.
Octavia was what made the story a delight.
She grew up with her absentminded scientist father, and learned to fend for herself at a very early age. The servants were more her family than her father. But her father did teach her about science.

I loved the way she always seized on opportunities and made the best of her circumstances by making them better. She was kind hearted and so very unprejudiced. I guess nobody had taken the time to teach her prejudices.
At first, I wasn't sure what to make of the story until the scene that reminded me of that scene in 'Pretty Woman', where Julia Roberts tries to buy a dress in an expensive store on Rodeo Drive. Except Octavia did what Julia Robert's character was too spineless to do. I loved it, and laughed out loud!

After that I devoured Octavia's journey through life.

Now Dorian on the other hand, was a rather pathetic excuse for a man. He's handsome and feckless and shallow as a puddle. But he is at heart, a nice person. The only mean thing he did was when he said things about Octavia at the ball where they first met. Things she overheard. And yet she was still besotted with him, even knowing that his character was lacking.

They never see each other again, till the second half of the story.

Dorian comes back to town after his father died and finds that things weren't quite as he remembered them. He does apologize to Octavia when they meet again 20 years later. Twenty years that have changed Octavia into an intelligent kind woman that the towns people look up to and trust and like.
The more he learns of his father, the more he reassesses his life.
There is some danger and intrigue in the second half that shakes things up.

I did feel that Dorian redeemed himself, and at one point he stands up for himself and Octavia quite nicely. He finally has matured at the ripe age of 45ish.
I wished the author had shown him coming to care for Octavia more slowly instead of the epiphany he has after getting to know her for weeks. The title of the story must be referring to Octavia's love for him. He never cared for her or even thought of her over the years they were apart. He was mildly interested in her character when they first met, but that didn't stop him from treating her poorly. And yet he did recognize her almost immediately when they met again, despite only having met the once 20 years earlier.

So all my stars are for Octavia and since she loves Dorian and is smarter than him, well I think they will be quite happy together.

Safety is OK.

I am leaving goodreads by the end of May.

Title : “I Have Always Loved You”
Author: #GLRobinson
September 21, 2024

This is my second book by this author. The first book I read was Repairing a Broken Heart, which I gave 5 stars! That being said I Have Always Loved You by GL Robinson presents a mixed experience for me. On one hand, I appreciated Octavia, the heroine, who is exactly the type of character I love: intelligent, assertive, and patient, without veering into arrogance. She’s relatable, someone who works hard and values the people around her. But then we have Dorian, the hero, who comes off as immature and spoiled, making selfish decisions that left me frustrated. His infatuation with Lillian, a shallow woman using him, underscored his lack of backbone and conviction. I generally struggle with male leads who don’t grow or realize their mistakes sooner.

The story itself is told from both perspectives, which I usually enjoy. However, the issue here was how little time the two spend together. For the first 75% of the book, they’re living separate lives, and by the time they do reunite, it feels rushed. There was little in the way of real relationship-building between Octavia and Dorian, and when the romance finally surfaced, I didn’t feel the chemistry between them. Love at first sight on Octavia’s part didn’t help either, especially when it seemed unearned given Dorian’s flaws.

I did appreciate the author’s writing style, but the story leaned too heavily on separated lives and felt more like a reflection on individual regrets than a true romance. The detailed sick-bed care scenes dragged the pace down and even bordered on uncomfortable. While I could see the resilience in Octavia and the way she made a life for herself, Dorian’s redemption fell flat for me.

Ultimately, the book lacked the emotional depth and connection I usually crave in second-chance romances. It’s not without its merits, but I couldn’t fully immerse myself in their journey. A solid 3-star read.

I received an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own, and I am sharing this review voluntarily. Many thanks to the author, the publisher, and BookSirens.

Octavia isn't really the sort of person to fit in with Society, so when her one season ends in regret and a broken heart she flatly denies, she returns to the country to settle down as a highly successful apothecary. As heir to an earldom, Dorian is highly popular, until he runs off with another man's wife - as a result of which he is disowned by his family and forced to leave the country. Now, years later, he's finally back in England and thrown together with Octavia - and finally realising that she's the sort of woman who's actually worth pursuing. But can they overcome the past to develop a future worth having?

I had somewhat mixed feelings about this book. It's an unusual sort of romance in that most of the book is setting up their pasts, with almost no time in which they're even in the same country, let alone interacting with each other - but I felt it worked well anyway. I enjoyed the writing, and particularly enjoyed getting to know Octavia. On the down-side, Dorian felt weak, which I didn't love. Still more, I disliked the fact that the story is based around one of the main characters running off with another man's wife (and then going on to live with her for years). I guess you could say I liked Octavia's side of the story but not Dorian's? However, if I ignore what brought Dorian to that point, I did appreciate the satisfying ending they both get, so overall it's a positive feeling. I'd just say that, while the content is clean, things are going on that I consider morally wrong - so if you object to that, you might prefer to avoid this book. Otherwise, it's a clean and well written story. 3.5 stars for the mixed feelings...

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Octavia is the daughter of what might be called a mad scientist who lives a fairly lonely existence. When her Aunt takes her to her first ball she has a dance with the dashing Dorian, only to be heartbroken when she overheard him making disparaging remarks about her. Over the years she never forgets him, meanwhile he has to flee the country after shocking the ton by running away with another man's wife. Many years later they meet again under some very strange circumstances.
What I love about this author's Regency books are that they are so much more than a boy meets girl story. Dorian comes across as a spoilt aristocrat, however learning about himself and realising his failures over the years. In the meantime Octavia has a new life as a village apothecary and her warm and caring nature has come to the fore. I really enjoyed how these two's stories intertwine and how they can be resolved. I can definitely recommend this book for those who enjoy stories that are different to the norm.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however this did not influence my review of the book and have already pre-ordered the ebook.

When Dorian betrays Octavia, something breaks inside her. She spends her days trying to accept and adjust to her new life, but not everything is the same anymore. Will time be able to heal the wounds and bring back Octavia's smile? Or will she never be able to forgive Dorian's betrayal?
On this occasion, author Robinson delights the reader with a beautiful story where romance is the protagonist. On each page, the reader navigates the feelings and emotions that Octavia goes through in an unparalleled way. This author knew how to intertwine aspects of literature and real life in an unparalleled way.
I recommend this novel to all those who are lovers of the genre and want to navigate the story of Octavia and Dorian.

I`ve found my new favorite author and rate this title head and shoulders above its peers of the genre. Multi-layered in its appeal, at times tongue-in-cheek, occasionally boasting an extraordinarily endearing turn of phrase, and always a welcome depth of emotion in a genuine voice, making everything come intensely alive. It showcases dilligent research and a strong female lead, without descending into any stereotypical traps. I was highly absorbed throughout the Regency tale of a second chance at love, and when done, wished that I could have remained with Octavia and Dorian in their world for much, much longer, and also wished I had the opportunity to award more than 5 stars. It may sound strange, I can`t quite explain it, but somehow I feel a much better and finer person for having read it and want to thank GL Robinson for giving me the chance to do so.

2 stars mostly due to preference. I don't know why the FL gave the ML the time of day. I guess the hearts wants what the heart wants.

I do like the FL very much except for her choosing the ML and I did like the descriptions of their lives as the times goes by.

ML is such a thoughtless/selfish person IMO though and we didn't really see him change at all (only implied at the end by his thoughts).

A slow-to-get-there second chance regency romance with the plain looking Octavia Banbury falling in love with the charming, cocky Dorian Fairfax, heir to the Earl of Ashton, at first sight but he terribly disappoints her when she overhears him telling his friends he had won the bet between them by dancing with her the plainest woman at the ball. Later, she sees him all enamored with the beautiful Lillian Marlowe, a married woman, who he leaves the ball with and she later hears fled to Italy with her. As the story goes on telling of both Octavia’s life and Dorian’s life in the first person, I became amazed at the intellect and strength of Octavia and dismayed at how Dorian allowed his life to crumble especially dealing with his son. Twenty years past and then one day Octavia sees the one man she has always loved again but just what is he doing there? What happens to him next may be even a bigger shock. A great story of how difficulties can make you stronger, misuse or abuse often leads to rebellion, the sins of the father often continue with the son, and that mistakes can be forgiven and made right?

This book is different from the typical Regency or Victorian Romance in a number of ways. It has an unusual structure, alternating the point-of-view between the two principal characters, Octavia and Dorian, whose first encounter was brief, but painfully memorable to Octavia. Their second chance comes twenty years later, when fate brings them together again.

This isn’t a fairy-tale romance with clearly depicted heroes and villains. A lot of people are imperfect in the story. The noble Dorian doesn’t always act nobly, and there are painful consequences for himself and others as a result of some of his ignoble actions. And yet over time, coming to terms with the harm his actions have caused for himself and others allows him to develop some sort of relationship with his dysfunctional family . Octavia doesn’t have the prettiest face or figure, but she is Intelligent, caring, enterprising and spunky. And her loving, constant heart is a beauty that doesn’t fade with time and comes to be appreciated as it should be. I really enjoyed reading the development of character over time..

If there is anything worse then instalove it's one sided instalove. If there is anything worse then one sided love it's people getting away with murder. Well almost getting away with murder. Our fairly narcissistic hero is saved by our lovestruck heroine at the eleventh hour.
As to what happens to son and evil daughter in law who have been putting rat poison in dear old dads drink. Nothing. Nada. They get to live in the Earls townhouse even though they are loaded with money and could well afford something else. They do have to come out twice a year and spend a month with the earl so he can teach his son everything he knows. Unfortunately that isn't much. Maybe I'm being harsh but if my son and his wife tell me they hate me. Put rat poison in my drink and tell me they wish I were dead we're not doing Christmas. On another note when the earl goes missing from his death bed at the castle why are no alarms raised. The man can't even stand up . Where do they think he went? Made no sense whatsoever.
The only one worth knowing in the whole book was Octavia. She was a 4 star heroine stuck with a one star hero. Whatever happened to her aunt? She seemed nice also.

Not your standard Regency novel, this seems to deal with real problems of quite real people. That is to say real in the sense of their behaviour, not that they were actual people of the period.

While we are not spending time thinking about balls and routs, about beautiful gowns and other items of the latest fashion, we are looking at how to make ends meet, how to join in the life of a small town, and in general how for the chief character, Octavia, to make a place for herself in the society in which she now lives.

It is also a romance, because Octavia long ago fell in love with Dorian, a man she could not really aspire to, who hardly noticed her except for a disparaging remark or two. They finally meet again when Dorian has returned after his disastrous adventure running away with a married woman, and Octavia has become the village apothecary.

Perhaps you would call this a second chance novel, but then they never really had a first chance.

I received the book as an ARC from the author, and this is my honest review.

Quite Satisfying

This quick, easy read is perfect for sunning on the beach. I especially love the satisfying ending that wraps up all the loose ends and provides a lovely image of the future for all the characters.

There are a couple of parts where historical information was clumsily dropped in, but I'm so delighted to learn more about the time period, I chose to overlook the syntax and non sequiturs.

This is only the second book I have read from this author. The first book I read was about a bluestocking, and I was terribly disappointed. This one is markedly improved, and it's clear Robinson is growing in her technical skills as a writer. I especially appreciate her plot lines that step outside the formulaic version seen in many Regency romances.

Since food carries a prominent role in, this story, I will wrap up by saying this reads like a light, healthy meal without heavy sauces poured everywhere or sticky sweet endings. The story is truly quite satisfying.

Octavia Banbury knows the pain of rejection, for nothing more than being a Plain Jane without any dowry. She is further burdened with an indifferent father, who spends money for his laboratory and get-rich-quick schemes, neglecting his daughter and household in the bargain. Her mother abandoned her father many years ago. From this unpromising start, she meets all of life's challenges with enormous courage and good humour. She is trained in chemistry under her father's tutelage, so when occasion arises, she becomes assistant to an apothecary. She is good at sewing, so she earns a small additional income as local seamstress. Twenty years pass like this, until she finds the man she loves being poisoned by his son and daughter-in-law.

The best part in the story is the two lives move in two very different channels. Each recounts his POV independent of the life of the other party. Chicklit, yes, but one with operatic flourishes of high passion, grief, disillusion, near-murder, a dramatic rescue and finally, reconciliation.

A sweet slow-building romance between a spinster and a disreputable, scandalous heir to an Earldom. The story spans twenty years between the Hero and heroines life. It shows you the different lives that these two led. Dorian, the heir to the earl of Ashton was given everything and was a disgrace to his family. Octavia, daughter of a gentleman scientist, had nothing and did remarkable things with her life. They meet at a ball and she falls in love at first sight. This love lasts a lifetime.

The reason for the 4* rating is the story moved to slow for me and I really disliked the Hero. It took too long for them to come together and I didn't feel any chemistry between the characters. It's a good story, with a good strong heroine, just not for me. If you like sweet slow-building stories, then this is the book for you.

I really enjoyed this story. Although, I wouldn’t call it a second chance - since they weren’t a couple to being with. I like that the author gave accounts for both their lives as they navigated their choices in life that lead them to lead the lives they did between meetings. I really liked Octavia’s character and how she grew to gain the love and respect of the community despite her initial feelings about herself. She had a good heart and it showed in the relationships she developed. Dorian was a rake and behaved badly in most of his relationships. His was the second chance at a good life with someone who cared and loved him. I’m not sure how I truly feel about his character. He really didn’t do anything that redeemed himself aside from falling in love with Octavia. Having said all that I really did enjoy the story. I felt the characters were fully developed and the story was well written.

At the very first ball Octavia attends Dorian asks to dance with her, as part of a wager with his three friends after which Dorian ends up running to the continent with a married lady. From that point on the story focuses on the next twenty years of both their lives and how they deal with the challenges they individually faced and dealt with during those passing years. Then their lives comes full circle as they coincidentally meet up again after Dorian returns home to claim his title after his father’s death. When Olivia finds him in grave danger she uses her apothecary knowledge to save him. During his weeks of recover they slowly come to truly understanding how the passing years have molded each of them into the person they have become today. Olivia finally has her hea with the man she has always loved.

An okay second chance romance between Dorian and Octavia. Its insta love on Octavias part, she sees him at a ball and falls in love with the hero, but he humiliates her and runs off with Lillian a married woman who as as shallow as him.

Many years later Dorian returns with to England only to be greeted with a son who hates him and a daughter in law who tries to kill him. Octavia meanwhile has established herself as a businesswoman successfully, but still carries the torch for Dorian.

So there's no relationship building until after 60% of the book is done. Even then many pages are dedicated to sick bed care, a bit gross in details. I liked the writing style but the lack of character and romance building was very apparent.

I Have Always Loved You is a Second Chance Regency Romance by G L Robinson. I think that this was a wonderful romance. I especially enjoyed how the author wrote the book. The story was divided into Parts with either Octavia or Dorian as the focus. When Dorian met Octavia, they were both young and for Octavia, it was love at first sight; for Dorian, no love. The story progresses over time and they are older when there paths cross again. G L Robinson is one of my favorite authors and I think that this book just might be my favorite… it is amazing. Delightful read telling of a young man’s folly, as he comes of age and learns hard lessons in life, and an industrious, plucky young woman who learns to fend for herself and those she loves. Their love story is not the common regency read, but one of second chances where two souls eventually find comfort, solace, and deep love with each other. The journey is full of heartbreak and loneliness on the way, but ends with their lives full of joy. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This is my first book by the author, but I look forward to reading more!

This tender, beautifully told story swept me away. Octavia and Dorian—two lives, two hearts shaped by time, distance, and very different choices—left an ache in my chest and hope in my heart. Octavia is sharp, grounded, and unforgettable. Dorian is charmingly flawed, full of regret, but oh so real. Their journey spans decades and continents, with warmth, wit, and just the right touch of heartbreak. A love story not just about romance, but about growth, forgiveness, and finding home in unexpected places. Quietly powerful and completely lovely.

Audiobook: I enjoyed this story a lot. I felt for Octavia as her life had many struggles; however, I admired her practicality, intelligence, and determination to overcome those obstacles which she could. I loved her independent spirit. Although I wasn't a fan of Dorian when he was first introduced, I developed an affection for him as he matured. I thought GL Robinson's narration was great as her knowledge of the characters enhanced her reading of the story. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

I must have spent at least half of the book wanting to give Dorian a sharp kick to the shins either from fury or exasperation!
Whereas I often wanted to put my arm around Octavia and give her some motherly love and advice.
It’s good to engage with the characters isn’t it?
She rose to her challenges and he went with the flow, until he eventually finds his purpose and way .
For much of the book their lives are separate and the story is told from their individual perspectives and we can follow their maturing characters. Although, 25 years on, she’s still a softie and he’s still a charmer, some things don’t change!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and different characters, it kept me engaged and entertained and I like to think of Dorian and Octavia realising their shared capacity for love.♥️

A charming read

I Have Always Loved You by GL Robinson is a charming and emotional second-chance romance. I really enjoyed how the story spans over twenty years.
The back-and-forth narration between Octavia and Dorian gives the story depth and insight into both of their feelings. There’s a lot of wit and humor in the writing, and I really enjoyed this. I would undoubtedly recommend reading it!

Stupid tripe: derivative & repetitive

Author relies on modern slang and superficial characterzations. Plot is derivative throughout all her books; formulaic and unfortunately relying too much on cloying sentimentality and not enough on invention or cleverness. At least this story is not loaded with gratuitous groupings as are her other offerings. Still, except for passing time this tome has no other qualities and is imminently forgettable.

I can't help hearing Dolly sing the title, though her voice fits neither in the regency or the victorian era. Hard to love Dorian and hard not to love Octavia. She was neglected by the mother who left her behind and the father who is off in the clouds, and yet she is kind to everyone she meets. It takes an extraordinary act of courage for her to get the attention of the upper class twit she loves

This is an original plot spanning the Regency era through Queen Victoria's early years on the throne, though the middle years are skimmed over quickly. The writing is satisfactory but I didn't find the characters engaging and didn't feel much chemistry between the heroine and hero. There are several typos including missing or unnecessary punctuation marks and misspelled words.

I have always loved you

A delightful story of life and paths chosen. This is a heartwarming story of second chances and forgiveness. Octavia is a wonderful main character and although we all feel like Dorian doesn't deserve her at least he himself agrees with the same. An enjoyable read with depth and joy.

An Anti-hero and A Strong Lifetime Love

Once again GL Robinson has conceived an unusual and unforgettable tale. She tells it in first person accounts that reveal character and plot leading to an ending that is as heartwarming and hopeful as you expect from any romance. Be prepared to smile.
