Foggy Basin #2

Books, Beans, and Buns

A small town rescue romance -- saving more than their hearts!

Brock inherited a bookstore with a tiny café in the quaint but confining hamlet he grew up in. He never imagined coming home would bring brand new issues and maybe a man of his own to protect.

Eddy is on the run. He may be a little paranoid with a side of anxiety and a tendency to be obsessive, but that doesn't mean someone isn't out to get him. Worse, it might be someone he knows. But he never thought he'd turn to a sexy, gruff and unlikely bookstore owner for help.

Welcome to Foggy Basin. Just passing through? No problem. Here to stay, well, better find your place. Sit back, relax and get to know the townsfolk. They love hard and play even harder. Each book is a standalone but why not stay and get to know us and read them all.

Eddy got threatening emails and bam left town. Eh, no police? No, he ran.
Eddy is a game developer at his family business, with his brother Greg and Greg’s husband Kurt.
Kurt is a nasty mf. Eddy is almost certain Kurt is behind the emails.

Brock is the owner of a tiny bookstore in a tiny town named Foggy Basin. One day a frightened guy entered his shop for shelter. In a blink, he’s gone again.
Their attraction is instant and when Eddy shows up again Brock feels protective and takes him home with him.

Eddy is right someone is looking for him. He doesn’t want to bring Brock in danger and returns home. He can’t convince his brother about Kurt being the one threatening him.

It was a super light read, even with some danger still light, and slightly developed, all fast-paced, with instant attraction, and several (a lot) sexual encounters which I scrolled through because I couldn’t feel it.
The suspense and who and why someone was after Eddy was nicely put together.
The supportive people of Foggy Basin were a nice addition to the story.

I am a little disappointed in this series so far. Generally, the first book world builds and starts to introduce the characters who live in the town.
This is book 2 and follows Brock a shopkeeper who meets Eddy. They literally say hi and then are falling into bed with each other.
There is a story in the background but I really am not as engaged as normal with these type of series.

DNF @ 40%.

There are so many reasons why I had to DNF this.

First, the editing. Was it Eddie or Eddy? Both are used throughout the book.

Site used in place of sight. ------> "I'm not letting you out of my site."

Those are only a couple of examples. Did nobody even skim over this book before it was published? All of it is literally right in your face. And I've seen nothing about the horrible editing in any of the other reviews I've read.

For Eddie/Eddy to be a so-called genius, he's dumber than dirt, and quite naive.

Everything with Eddie/Eddy and Brock happens too fast.

You're hiding from somebody you believe is trying to kill you, but you're perfectly fine with sitting down and having coffee with the town gossip - while giving said town gossip your real name? Come on.

I ended this not knowing who was trying to kill Eddie/Eddy - unless it was the very obvious person - and honestly, at this point, I don't even care. The same with Jackie and Alfred from Finding Alfred. I wanted to see how they originally met, but not enough to keep reading.

No rating because I don't rate books I don't finish.

DNF @13% ... I have a vague memory of reading this author's book Holeshot a million years ago, before I started tracking my reading here on GR, and liking it. Based on that, I've picked up a few other books by her... and been consistently disappointed.

This one had a cute premise, so I grabbed it, but quickly realized it isn't for me. The storytelling is choppy, like the equivalent of instalove but instead insta... plot points? Whatever the right term is, it just feels like the events are forced and contrived and missing any depth or real context to either make them make sense or make me care. I gave up during Chapter 3 when the MCs finally meet and it just got ridiculous. 🙄

I wish this author well, but I'm going to try to remember now that she's really not for me. 🤷‍♀️

More than a romance

While the barebones of the story is the love story of Brock and Eddy, Michaels weaves a plot into the tale. Knowledgeably writing of the intrigue of a small game-developing shop and its internal shenanigans, mixing in some psychological factors and then pushing the action to a quaint small town in Northern California, her narrative is full of the comfortable ambiance of the suburban escape to country. Add in some greatly heated scenes and falling in love, this is a great read.
Ms Michaels ran a drawing in a newsletter, and I am a lucky winner; I selected this ebook from her catalog. My review is honest and uninfluenced by this win, which is more than just Books, Beans, and Buns!
