Following Fate

Rate this book
“You never have to force anything that’s meant to be.”
But some things are worth fighting for.

Rule #1 of bonding a Wildling
They’re Wild.
Avyanna’s dreams of being a Rider have finally come true. Except… it’s more of a nightmare. The dragon she bonded is unlike anything anyone ever expected, and yet, she is supposed to act like any other Rider. How does one teach a Wild Dragon… to act like a dragon?

Rule #2
They are not house trained.
Bonded to a Wildling, Avyanna struggles to keep her own emotions in check. She let that dream die. Now it has revived and crushed her hope of a life spent with Rafe. She has to wrangle a full grown dragon that won’t listen to her, and humiliates her at every turn. How much can one person take?

Rule #3
Always trust the magic.
The bond meant to bring Rider and dragon together becomes a gaping wound. When the dragon does the unthinkable—tarnishing the name of all Dragon Kind, the magic she didn’t want gives her a warning—a choice. One that will alter the course of her future. Will she choose to follow Fate, or listen to those who have never been in her shoes?

More importantly: Where is Rafe?

A mashup of Eragon and Fourth Wing, readers who enjoy romance and dragons will love this tale of adventure and perseverance. Be forewarned, there be dragons ahead.

**Please note: This is book two of a trilogy. It immediately follows the events of book one**

This book didn't hit as hard as book 1 did for me, but it picked up at the end. I had issues with the writing and the female main character for most of this book. Tizmet was the only bright light. Minor spoilers in the below + some swearing because I am who I am lol

I liked Avyanna in book 1 because she was likable, a survivor but a fighter, fairly mature for a 17-year-old, and fought for what she wanted. In this book, she was the fucking worst. She just thought about Rafe as an annoying lovesick teenager for the entire book. Her eyes were constantly welling with tears. She tells us about 1,000,000 times that Rafe is the only person who knows her (despite having like 5 people who REALLY care for her). She's constantly "biting back smiles" or looking down to hide her smile....like honey you're not that subtle. Meanwhile, Rafe could give a fuck. Avyanna is constantly crying over this man who is 14 years older than her and who seems to barely like her despite a few sweet words here and there. She went from acting like a strong woman to acting like a teenager who keeps stomping her feet about how she's "a woman" and "not a girl." Catch me over here rolling my eyes.

Additionally, for half of the book, Avyanna hates her dragon. But she doesn't just hate her dragon, Tizmet-she's borderline cruel to her. She tells Tizmet she hates her over and over and over again, and all Tizmet is trying to do is protect Avyanna. It was super off-putting. They basically spent most of the book going in circles where they start to get more comfortable with each other, and then randomly have a huge blowout fight and Avyanna says "I hate you." Suddenly towards the last half of the book, the narration is like "months went by, and Tizmet and I now understand each other and are bonded." It was so random and out of the blue after Avyanna was so cruel.

I really hated aspects of the writing in this book because it was so rushed. The 1st book was dragged out and slow in terms of plot, which I was OK with because I got used to it. Meanwhile, this book was the complete opposite, so it felt like too much of a drastic change. The 1st book would tell us about every single moment in Avyanna's day in heavy detail. This book had the main characters jumping from place to place, between the palace and random villages and Northwing, WAY too quickly. Additionally, months would pass by in the span of a few sentences mid-page in the middle of a random chapter. It was incredibly hard to follow the pacing of the plot, and it just didn't match how the 1st book flowed. Everything moved so quickly compared to the first book.

Also, the friendship with Mikhala felt rushed (probably because the writing rushed through every plot point so much). I understand it spanned over the course of months, but the book did more "telling than showing" us their relationship grow. It was just like, "months passed, and we are now best friends." *Sigh*

Anyways, the story is good. I love Tizmet. The world-building is good, but it's nothing that will blow you away. I just hated Avyanna in this and felt like her character did a total 180. The romance is underwhelming, and I don't care about Rafe, but I know we're supposed to love the romance because Avyanna cries/thinks about him non-fucking-stop. The side characters are great. There are still a lot of triggers in this book, so note to readers - check your triggers before starting this series!

I am looking forward to reading book 3. I hope this brings back the magic of book 1 because I really liked the beginning of this.

What! Wow! This is truly such an emotional roller coaster. I wept at parts, I laughed at parts. I was stressed out and on the edge of my seat at parts. This truly is such a magical ride to experience. I know everyone raves about the popular dragon book, but this series is TRULY something people need to stop underplaying. It's amazing. So many twists, turns and great moments. The character development is amazing. The cliffhangers are always so shocking. Such a worthy read, if you enjoyed the other dragon rider book... you are going to LOVE this one! It needs to go viral.

I’m so shaken right now…I don’t even know how to start this review!!

Get ready for the revolution, the fb fan pages, the merchandise….THIS series is the real deal.

I have never been so invested, ensnared, or bursting at the seams to talk about a book before this. Truly I was a fourth wing follower…fourth wing? What is fourth wing after this book??

The world building - top notch, character development - top notch, PLOT - ORIGINAL, captivating, and entrancing!

This is the 2nd in this series and we follow directly where the first ends- a cliffhanger (I know not for some). Fair warning this also ends on another nasty but oh so good at the same time, cliffhanger !! This book is the battle of binding a dragon, overcoming persecution of sorts, and connecting with our found family! Did I mention DRAGONS! The dragons are one of the main attractions!

Our characters ENDURE - through the worst of the worst. Our female lead is spectacular! She never strays from her purpose and fights! Our male lead is absent for a portion yet still remains on the forefront of everyone’s mind. We meet new characters in this book that you become obsessed with almost as much as the main characters. MIK - must I say more! JUST WAIT! I will not give any spoilers away!

If you are on the fence of picking up this series…stop thinking and start reading! You can thank me later!!

This is a strong 4.5 for me.

With a strong debut of a book of world building and character development I had strong hope that this series would give everything I needed it to. And it delivered. I will never judge a series by a first book. I think with any series that there is always a stronger book and this one showed exactly that.

I found just about every moment of this read enjoyable! And I can’t wait to read the next one! This had more dragons, and I feel like we saw a lot more of Vys strong willed personality. We meet a few new characters and they happen to be some of my favorites if this series so far.

Spice is fade to black for someone who reads a lot of dark romance but it is wholesome in the best ways. I love that the MMC always has the FMCS go ahead every time and primarily has her best interest in heart. He is everything.

Book 2 was everything I hoped for and more! This whole world is magical and draws you in for endless adventure. The twists pack a punch, the character development is relatable and empowering, and the relationships have such a charm with the found family elements and connections.
Loved the additions of new characters and this one had so much action I was hooked throughout, especially seeing the dragon bond development.
I need book 3 asap after that finale, but I also don't want this series to end!

ARC review here!

“Don’t give up on this simply because of what makes sense in your mind. Love makes a way.”

Wow wow wow!! I have no words! I was immersed! I was kicking and swinging my legs smiling. I was afraid. I was shocked. I covered my mouth several times, wide eyed! The character growth and new characters we are introduced to are amazing! Although not quite as angsty 🥵 as book 1, the emotions go for a wild ride when it comes to our FMC and MMC! The physical and emotional growth we see in Vy is amazing! Vy matures (thanks to Tizzy 😏). The relationship growth between Tizmet and Vy is beautiful. Tizmet’s history is heartbreaking and explains so much. Mik gives me Ygritte from Game of Thrones vibes and I’m so glad to see Vy find a female friend who shows her respect for who she is and doesn’t attempt to changer her or degrade her for the choices she has made for herself. Mik supports her as she is, and Vy her. And that ending!! 😩 How dare you hit me like that! Rafe is perfection. The age gap is 🔥 and the bond Rafe and Vy have created, the tenderness but fierce love they share. Although Fourth Wing may be more widely known, I feel like this series is far more fleshed out and the characters even more likable, and the story even more captivating! I adore this series and cannot wait for book 3!

This book was great! Especially for a new author it is such a great start and I can’t wait to see where the series goes, not to mention where the author goes in the future.
Forcing fate felt like a prologue to following fate, setting up the backstory and giving context to why Avyanna makes the decisions she does. Following fate is much more exciting and I liked it a lot more than I liked forcing fate. Seeing the writing style develop throughout the book was so beautiful.
I like the premise of having the dragon be unable to communicate and not be trusting of humans, having to learn to communicate word by word. That was something I’ve never seen before in a book which was really exciting. Having Tizmet live her whole life away from humans, having her own opinions and personality, as well as her own trauma added so much depth to her personality. Tizmet also is so funny! I loved her sassy comebacks. My favourite one was “My size is intimidating--unlike your small stature”
The emotions this book put me through was insane, i was laughing, crying, angry at all the men in the book(namely Ruveel) for not listening to Avyanna. Once Avyanna and Tizmet got some space from the world and started really bonding with eachother I was so happy, it was so heartwarming seeing them get to know eachother.
The ability for this book to get me emotional was insane, when Ruveel said Rafe was dead I physically reacted, and when Avyanna finally found him I was crying.
Overall this book was a rollercoaster of emotions that I was having the time of my life going through. I cannot wait to read the next book!

I got the chance to read my first ARC and I was NOT disappointed. The story follows Vy and the continuous wild ride of her growth as the main character. So much action and adventure packed into this second book, I love that the writer simply didn’t follow the cliche tropes and put her own spin to this crazy ride of a series. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get teary eyed at the end but I am eager to read the next in the series. Read it! You won’t be disappointed!

"You are free to defend only yourself and those you wish"

The second one was just as good as the first one! The cliffhanger was good!! Avyannna is warrior.. a fighter.. and a woman who knows what she wants 😂

This book had so much depth! It covered a large timeline of events without sacrificing details. We went through years of trials as Vy struggled to find herself and make an impression on the world.

"I will come for you" boy you better!.. I can't wait for the third book to come out.

This was the first arc I ever read and I'm glad it was this one because I was addicted. I enjoyed reading this one a lot. If you are a fan of fantasy/romantasy you have to give this trilogy a try!!

I absolutely love this series and it's such a in-depth, sprawling world that the author has introduced us to. It's like the books have a spell on me as no matter how much I try to put them down, I just find myself thinking about the book and not being able to stop myself reading!

The introduction of Tismet in this book was just absolutely perfect and I love the relationship between Avyanna and her, its so endearing and I was just right there with them throughout the book.
The world building, relationships and characterisations continue to be excellent and utterly enjoyable to read. I was happy to revisit some of Vy's previous friends and life but also see her development as an individual and her journey as it continues. She is such an endearing character with such strength but also imperfections, I've really enjoyed reading about her growth and experiences.

The story did go to places I wasn't expecting, the author is not afraid to shock the reader at times and honestly make you question whether there will ever be a HEA!

I can't wait to see where the final book goes and find out what fate is in store for Vy!

I was given an arc of this book and absolutely loved it, this is my honest opinion.

Everything Fourth Wing wishes it was. I cried like a baby.

---

If you like books that center on the infinitely complex relationship between a dragon and a rider - you should absolutely pick this up.

This is a masterful sequel that not only met but exceeded the high expectations I had after the first book. Avyanna has finally achieved her dream of becoming a Rider, but she realizes that she'd moved on from that dream. Unlike the usual dragon/rider partnerships, this one is fraught with unpredictability and chaos. Instead of bonding with a hatchling and growing together, this a wild dragon with a personality and opinions of her own. Frick does a stellar job of portraying Avy's struggle to train and connect with her dragon. The bond they share is depicted with a rich emotional depth, evolving from a source of frustration and humiliation to one of mutual understanding and respect. I freaking loved it.

Avy's growth is particularly compelling as she navigates her complex bond and the high expectations placed upon her. Her journey is not just about becoming a Rider but about understanding herself and her place in a world that constantly challenges her. The way she deals with her dragon's behavior and the societal pressures around her is both inspiring and relatable.

The romance between Avy and Rafe is another highlight. Initially, I had reservations about their relationship due to the age gap, but Frick handles it with such sensitivity and nuance that it becomes one of the story's greatest strengths. Their connection is heartfelt and genuine, building on mutual respect. The emotional moments between them are beautiful and deeply moving.

This is a story of resilience and growth. It is a story filled with well-crafted characters, a richly imagined world, and a plot that keeps you hooked. Exceptional book. Highly, highly recommend.

This series… oh my goodness!! Once I started I couldn’t stop!
Following Fate picks up right where Forcing Fate ends and we get to dive deeper into the story.
This series is the slowest of slow burns and I almost love aspect the most (and I normally wouldn’t say that)! I love how natural it is versus some authors who almost rush out of the slow burn at the end.
I’m not a huge age gap reader (I love it, but don’t tend to pick those books up first) but Ayvanna and Rafe are just *chefs kiss*!!
We see the bond between Ayvanna and Tizmet develop!!!
The new side characters we meet in this book are such a great addition. I love how they add to the book and the development of our main character!
I just love how our author makes the story line play out. This series is very different than a lot I have read and it is very refreshing!
Fourth Wing may be more well known but this series tops it for me. I found myself gasping, kicking my feet, clutching my pearls and just overall swooning over how good this book is!
If you are not a fan of cliff hangers… this book has one. That’s all I will say, you have been warned.
I cannot wait for book 3 to come out!!

Things to expect:
Strong FMC
Slowwww burn
Cliffhanger
More character development

“Always trust the magic.”

Following Fate is the second book in the trilogy, so if you have not read the first, please do so before reading this review!

Yes, there are dragons. Yes, there is an age gap. Yes, he’s her general. Yes, he’s an asshole.

Fans of Fourth Wing and morally grey characters will love Forcing Fate and Following Fate. It includes a nonfae age gap that is written in a beautiful and respectful read, with just enough spice 🌶️

Book 2 picks up with Avyanna realizing she’s now bond to a dragon. Not just any dragon, but a wild one. She must learn to communicate, bond, and accept her new fate. However, by accepting and following her fate, is she giving up everything she loves? Where does she fit in as a rider and soldier?

I loved reading about the character development Avy went through in this book, and how she stepped away from some of her previous naive thinking to become more of an adult (even if her dragon thinks she is a child). Moreover, Avy isn’t the only character we see go through set backs and growth. This heart-shattering had me crying at 2am on a Thursday.

I would definitely recommend this book to my friends that loved Fourth Wing and Divine Rivals, and I am excited for book three!

M. A. Frick did it again with an amazing immerse story with a cliffhanger that I was not prepared for.

Starting right where book one ended, so you definitely need to read that first. Avyanna ends up bonded to a wild dragon, and in let me just say someone FINALLY wrote a dragon that doesn’t instantly communicate and be at the rider’s side right away. I loved the way not only did Frick show how trust was gained between Avyanna and Tizmet, but also what occurred when it was lost.

Rafe is still a broody general who won’t act on his feeling for Avyanna. The way Frick has created this relationship where Rafe is aware of the age gap and inexperience Avyanna has is beautiful. Their connection is deeper than just physical because they have avoided it. The tension just continues to rise and I really hope he gets put out of his misery soon.

The ending, before we get Rafe’s POV, is an amazing cliffhanger, but am I ready for the third book now? Yes, but I’m not ready for their story to end. Now Rafe’s POV, I LOVE getting to read from his POV because this man became a general for his skills, and watching him use those skills in an attempt to undermine others was just «chef’s kiss»

My Rating: ALL THE STARS (At least 1000)
Spice: .5 (For angst and tension)

My thoughts after reading this...

Wow... just wow...is the beautiful journey that is the Fates Unraveled Series, and the brilliant writing style that which I have come to know and love by M.A. Frick.

This isn't' just a breaking gender stereotypes series, this is a pulverizing and smashing them to the tiniest of pieces gender stereotypes series. This isn't a forbidden love age-gap series, this is a soldier falls in love with her general, slowly, after pieces of his soul gradually become revealed - but only to her. This ill-tempered general with an eye for pushing boundaries and breaking down the walls of Avyanna's heart. The second installment in this trilogy is less of the story of Avyanna and Rafe and more of Avyanna's story of coming into her own and her new bonded dragon.

This book picks up where the first left off - with our main female character, Avyanna bonding to a wild dragon. Thier relationship is tumultuous at best. Avyanna has always wanted to bond a dragon, but the first to bond a wild one is not what she had in mind for her fate. Now, she has to try her hand at communicating to a creature who has never been around humans before. Avyanna tries to show her new dragon how to be a proper but how do you change someone or something that is set in their ways. They need each other but resent each other. In a way, their bonding impedes on both of their freedoms and their way of life. Their new life is thrust upon them and is full of twists, turns and overcoming obstacles along the way. Tizmet's wild thoughts, one liners and her back story all were intricately weaved by this author to create a beloved literary dragon masterpiece. My favorite moments from this book belong to Tizmet, it appears as though she has also bonded my heart as well.

Will Avyanna follow her heart and not her orders? Will she be able to force her fate, or relinquish her control and follow it through?
Only you can find out by reading Following Fate by M.A. Frick!

Happy release day!!

What a wild ride! I absolutely loved Forcing Fate and could not wait to dive into Following Fate! This is one of those series where I catch myself thinking "I wonder what they are up to today" only to be reminded, to my dismay, that they are infact fictional characters. I will be so sad when this series ends.

I'm going to omit spoilers from this review but I have to say that when [redacted] was [redacted] and then [redacted] happened!! Girl was really out here doing field medicine way above her pay grade.

Following Fate is an epic sequel and didn't fall into the second book slog that many trilogies suffer from. I enjoyed the pacing, the reveals and the continued character growth. This slow burn is literally killing me. It's torture!

I absolutely love that I didn't predict the ending correctly and I am so hyped for book 3!

It's been a long time (think months, not years...but still) since I've SOBBED over a book, let alone a series. But this series is *chef's kiss* and far superior to the mainstream dragon book that everyone is on about. And damn, I was in need of a good cry.

This series has so much jammed into it. A solid enemies to lovers troupe, harrowing battles, found family, banishment, magic, a shared, vicious enemy, and obviously dragons. There's death and destruction, heartbreak, and lovers who beat all odds. I could seriously go on, but I want you to read this with surprises still intact.

I will definitely be purchasing hard copies of these because I need a reward for my heartbreak. My husband caught me on several occasions, full out sobbing, and had to turn and walk away because I was crying too hard to answer his puzzled gaze. And I want to read these books a million more times so I can destroy my sensibilities.

REVIEW

✨ ARC Review ✨ with my honest thoughts, spoiler free.

Absolutely OBSESSED! This book is part two, so make sure you read Forcing Fate first, it ends on a cliffhanger and Following Fate picks right up where it left off. Fourth Wing vibes carried over and the romantasy is great!

I was immediately captivated with this book, I had a hard time putting it down at any point. I didn’t think there were any lulls, I was often on the edge of my seat, and the romance was definitely there! I also loved the new characters that were introduced.

Avyanna is really finding herself in Following Fate and I’m totally here for it! I was giggling, thinking, and sobbing. This book also ends on a cliffhanger like Forcing Fate, and I cannot wait for Fulfilling Fate to come out!

Strong, fierce FMC with a grumpy, morally grey MMC. Grumpy/Sunshine. Also, DRAGONS 😍

MA Frick is an incredible writing and amazing storyteller. Even after this trilogy, I’m excited to see what she does next and will absolutely be reading it!

Oh. My. God. That was so good, I now eagerly await the third book. In the beginning I’ll be honest I didn’t like Avyana I thought she was a little whiny and very entitled, she grew on me though and is now what I consider a strong female lead. She does still have a few character flaws but I love that, I hate when authors make the fmc “perfect” especially in war times or they all of a sudden have complete control over new abilities so I love this. Rafe, what can I say? I’ve loved him since the beginning, I was heartbroken when Avyana found him all cut up I thought for sure he was getting killed off. I definitely cried a lot while reading this book, between that and her struggling towards the beginning of this book with Tizmet it was a really good read. Highly recommended

Following Fate by @mafrick.author (coming out February 29th)

WOW!

I DEVOURED this book! I loved reading about the relationship growth between Avyanna and Tizmet. There were so many twists and turns, plus I may have shed a few tears multiple times throughout the book. My heart broke for both Avyanna and Tizmet, but that ending! Another cliffhanger?! But the growth that Avyanna has made throughout this book - I’m so proud of her 🥹

The storyline was unexpected and I was a bit worried for a second, but I can’t wait for book 3!

I highly recommend this series especially if you love Andarna from Fourth Wing/Iron Flame. But this storyline is so different from Fourth Wing and that’s what I enjoyed.

Found family.

ARC REVIEW: WOW!!!! I can’t even begin to describe how much I enjoyed this second book. It was such a wild ride. I loved the depth of character development for Avayanna, and the addition of a strong, close female companion. I am not one to normally get too teary with written content, but oh my, when I say the ending had me sobbing, I was a MESS! With the brilliant cliffhanger ending, I will be keeping a close eye for book 3. This series is a MUST READ for anyone that enjoys fantasy/dragon realm content. ❤️

I enjoyed the first of the trilogy, but loved this second addition! I devoured it all in about 9 hours… the idea of fate has always been a strong guide for me throughout life, so taking that line of thinking through the adventures throughout this story was very real. I laughed and I cried throughout, which doesn’t happen often for me. The writing pulls all kinds of feels out!

This book had me feeling every emotion! From love and pure hatred. I laughed and cried reading this! The amount of description had me reading while seeing the entire story in my mind.

The dynamic of friends turned family had me falling in love with these characters. The pure determination she has to be her own is astounding.

Avyanna, newly bonded to a wild adult dragon, must return to her hometown to meet with the Dragon Lord, Ruveel. Ruveel and the King demand that Avyanna attend classes with the new Dragon Riders. However, Avyanna and her dragon, Tizmet's, bond is different -- how can they expect a grown dragon to attend classes with Hatchlings? As Avyanna struggles to be apart from all her friends and her General, she finds that forming a bond with Tizmet is more difficult than she thinks.

While beyond enemy lines, the Shadows are still hunting down dragons. One day, Avyanna has a magical connection and notices that Rafe is in trouble.

Tension. Age gap. Determination. Love. Learning.

------------------------------------

M.A. Frick does it yet again. I loved the character growth of Avyanna - from being a naive girl, to blossoming into a strong, warrior woman. While Avyanna was still as strong willed as she was in the first book, she finds herself navigating positions that are new and yet familiar at the same time. However, she will cower no longer. It was also incredible getting to see Tizmet grow and evolve alongside Avyanna, while their relationship grows as they learn each other.

The tension between Rage and Avyanna continues. My heart was ripped out and stepped on. That being said...

I am beyond excited for part 3!

Slow-burn, tempers, stolen glances, strong female characters, and true friendship - oh and dragons.

Following Fate is one of those books that keeps you awake until 2 am because you have to know what happens next.

How long do we have to what for Fulfilling Fate because I’m ready now. ❤️
