Bound by Fate, Torn by Duty: A Love Forged in Forbidden Shadows
In a world where the laws of love and desire are dictated by battle and bloodline, Elara stands as a fierce warrior, not only against the savage beasts of the outer realms but also as the sole defender of her dying brother. Elite warrior Varek, honored by the Elders yet numbed by a life of hollow privilege, meets his match in Elara, whose fierce spirit ignites in him an unfamiliar blaze, revealing a connection that defies their world's stringent decrees.
Sent on a treacherous quest by the Elders to procure a mystical serum from the Tree of Life, Varek and Elara's path is fraught with more than the dangers of the wild—they are challenged by the burgeoning, forbidden passion between them. Promised rewards become twisted in webs of deceit, and as they confront the reality of their mission, they must unravel whether their love is a beacon of hope or a harbinger of doom. In this dance of shadows, every choice is laden with the potential for salvation or the peril of a curse, leaving them to determine if their love is the ultimate sacrifice or the greatest gift of all.
Fallen Shadows started off great. Lots of tension, mystery, drama, mysterious curse. And then Elara and Varek. Warriors, lovers, drawn to each other despite knowing that their love can never be. There was so much going on and I couldn't stop reading but halfway through it all sort of fizzled out. Which is a real shame because I wanted more. I wanted more world building, more character development, more background story. Overall, it was a good read but it left me slightly unsatisfied.
I want to thank NetGalley and Flyaway Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read Fallen Shadows.
This was a really good book! It is 51 chapters and dual P.O.V bouncing between Elara and Varek who are the two main characters. There are some trigger warnings so be aware of that going into the book. There is excellent world building and the characters and environment really drag you in and make it so you don’t want to stop reading! There is a sorta love triangle in this book that keeps you wondering who Elara is going to end up with! The book really keeps you entertained and on your toes wondering exactly what is going to happen and there is some spice in it too!
Overview: This is a story about a forbidden romance between two warriors set in a world where the entire population is under control of a group of people called the “Elders”.
The Elders have granted the people safety from the danger of the Ravenous Curse that lurks beyond the walls of the kingdom via the use of amulets they all must wear. The Elders are ruthless and tyrannical in their ruling of the people - everyone must obey order and no one can question their decisions. Any resistance is met with death.
The story follows Elara and Varek, both warriors under the command of the Elders. Forbidden to love but destined to want only the other, they find themselves unable to stay away. When Elara’s brother falls ill, Varek can’t stop himself from going against the Elders and helping Elara. Things quickly go awry and Elara must push Varek away for the safety of both him and her brother.
When the Ravenous Curse pushes its way through the kingdom barriers, in an attempt to make an example out of them, Elara and Varek are sent on a mission to collect sap from The Life Tree to help their injured people. Their mission enlightens them on what truly lurks beyond the safety of their walls. They find themselves faced with the decision to run or return to their people and share what they’ve learned - if they live long enough to do so.
My thoughts:
The story was compelling and the world dynamic was really interesting. I was sucked in from the beginning which isn’t common for me when it comes to fantasy books. But after that initial 10-15%, the story and character development fizzled out a bit.
A lot of Elara and Vareks initial love story is either implied or told rather than shown. The story immediately jumps into their desperation for each other but there’s very little explanation as to why. I found it a little difficult to believe their dynamic without the context that was needed. It would have felt more genuine if we either had backstory developed in the beginning or their love built gradually throughout the story.
The language and dialogue took a bit to get used to. Because it’s very insta-lovey, some parts felt cringy. I actually like a good insta-love, obsession style romance, if it is developed properly.
Overall, it was fairly enjoyable!
*I am grateful to have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own
Firstly I would like to say I’m very grateful to have received a digital ARC from Raven More.
I started reading this book after reading another book with very little happened and boy am I glad at how quickly Fallen Shadows jumped into the action. The relationship between Elara and Varek is a compelling one, but for me, it was the emotion and relationships between Elara and her family that hooked me.
The notion of the elders being in charge is not too dissimilar to a 1984 surveillance state. This of course provides some interesting struggles for the characters, which were intriguing as a reader.
For me, personally, I do think the story jumped around a little bit with very little focus on the beginning of Elara’s journey as a warrior and the budding relationship between Elara and Varek. It became very intense very quickly, and while this is not necessarily a bad thing in many stories, I think I just hoped for more backstory there to really build my emotional connection as a reader to these characters. This also could just be a result of an instalove trope. This is why it was a 4 and not a 5 for me.
Despite this, my interest was grabbed at every point in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was a lovely dip into what felt like historical fantasy (it likely isn’t historical but that’s just my mental image of the castle and the warriors along with the language choices) which is not normally a vibe that I personally delve into.
If you are a fan of romantasy, ‘touch her and you’ll die’, swords and magic, and you’re not a fan of a slow burn, then this could be the book for you! Also the cover is stunning so what more can I say?
I went into this with decent expectations - and I have to say I am...underwhelmed. I did like the concept of the story but I also felt like it needed to be more developed. The chichi-ness of the wording was distracting and took more away from the story than added to it. I could have done without that and had more explanations/plot/character development instead.
The beginning started off at a good pace but then it just sprinted off and I felt like the first part of the story went missing and the progressions just didn't make sense - the places that needed the most story or character development - e.g. the romance - went at warp speed.
The romance portion just missed completely if I'm being honest, there was nothing that appealed to me about it which was disappointing, especially since its supposed to be a forbidden love. Even the descriptions of the loves scenes sounded chichi but were bland. Don't misunderstand, I love closed door romances and even fade to black - it doesn't need to be descriptive or raunchy, but this was convoluted to the point that I ended up skimming most of it to just move forward. The part that I felt had some meat on its bones was overshadowed by jumping back into warp speed.
The resolutions and reveals were kind of anti-climactic, I figured out the "curse" before I was halfway through the book. I love fantasy and romance but this just kind of left me with a "meh" feeling, unfortunately.
Overall, I think that chunks of this needed to be more developed, the relationship arc among them. I believe it would have made the story more engaging and immersive than it ended up being. Again, I liked the concept but the execution fell flat for me.
*Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that not everyone is going to have the same outlook on books because reading is subjective. I am a big advocate for honest (including negative) reviews. I believe reviews are the readers’ space and I want to be truthful with how every book I read – gifted or not – resonates with me as a reader.
I really hate doing this, but I have to be brutally honest. I DNF'd at approximately 50%. I really hate doing this and very rarely do, but I just could not engage with this book.
The world building was essentially non-existent meaning that from the very beginning it was almost impossible to actually connect with or engage with the story. The prose felt very flat, there wasn't really any emotion or depth from the characters. Even though it is told through their perspective it felt very much as if you were being told what was happening as opposed to experiencing. The same can be said for the scenes with attempted spice, it felt flat, no passion or emotion.
This story is very much insta love from basically the first page with little to no explanation as to why or how the characters actually developed these feelings. This leaves it very difficult to actually get behind the relationship or the love story.
There seemed to be a lot of explanation lacking also. Much the same as the world building. We were being told things but there was no explanation as to why things were a certain way, or how that came to be.
For these reason I really struggled through the 50% I did read and was unable to persevere any further.
Firstly, I would like to thank both NetGalley and author for providing me with a free e-copy of this book in exchange of my honest review.
I feel so sad only giving this book two stars, however I feel like the story could’ve been so much more. The story itself, and the premise sounded so intriguing and held so much promise; however, I don’t know how I feel about it’s execution.
Firstly, we have the two main characters, Elara and Varek, their love from the very start was all consuming. I feel like there could’ve been a first book, which could’ve focused on building their personalities and the relationship between them so that the reader felt more emotionally invested in these characters. Instead, as a reader, I felt thrust upon the story, and expected to accept this all consuming love between the characters, without really knowing how it got to that point and what it was about each other they felt so deeply. Their overall personalities felt a bit lack lustre and non existent apart from their mutual pining.
These sentiments also apply to the story itself. I feel like if there would’ve been a first book focusing more on world building and the magic, which lead up to the events of this book, the story could’ve flourished so much more. I felt that the author of this book whilst writing it had such a clear and fleshed out vision in her head, but sort of forgot that us as a reader don’t get to have the privilege of knowing her creative insight, and just expected us to know the history behind the story leading up to the events that follow.
I can’t help but feel bad whilst writing this, but as I said at the start, this is my honest review. I just wish this book was a sequel where I would have more knowledge of what was actually happening, instead though the writing is very descriptive, I spent most of my time reading this trying to figure out what was actually happening. The role of the elders and the ravenous, the magic at play was so intriguing however whilst reading I couldn’t help but have thoughts like “oh another near death experience” “wait what?” “what’s actually going on, how did they end up here” The premise was there, however personally for me it just didn’t hit the spot, but this is just my opinion and I’m sure that there are others out there who will love this story. If the synopsis intrigues you then please read it, you may be pleasantly surprised!
First, I would like to say thank you so much to Raven More for the opportunity to read the ARC. Secondly, on to my review....
I really enjoyed Fallen Shadows. It kept be interested and wanting to know what happens. There were a few times I was a bit confused about it, but it wasn't enough for me to stop reading. I really loved the dynamic between Elara and Varek. They seemed to balance each other out and were there for each other no matter what.
There were a few parts that I wish would have gone more in-depth and gave a bigger explanation or back story. I also feel like the ending was a bit rushed. It could have either been drawn out longer or made into the starting of a sequel. (Hate cliffhangers, though lol)
Overall, I really enjoy the characters' personal growth as well as their growth in relationships. Elara went through hell, but she would always come back stronger.
Would I read this again? Yes Would I recommend it to a friend? Also yes Was there spicy parts? Mmmhmmm 🌶🌶🌶🌶 Do I hope for a sequel? Yes, yes, I do!!!
Let me start by mentioning that the plot was very interesting. I was sucked in the book from the start. I like the world of Elders the author build and I enjoyed the pace of the book as well. It was a bit if info dump at the start which was dragging but it is same for every fantasy book. This book gave dune meets assassins creed vibes which was intriguing.
I would wish that the author explored more backstories of the main characters rather than just mentioning their reasoning. The story follows our main characters who are in training to become warriors and are forbidden to love. But they seem to be drawn towards each other. At the end the MMC breaks the rule and helps the FMC when her brother dies.
I would have loved if there was a little slow burn, this was insta-love which is fine with explanation. Without their background it didn’t stick to me. Overall, it would do with some editing and character development.
Thank you Netgallery for the e-ARC I enjoyed the read.
This tale drew me in immediately, it has an archaic and very traditional setting. The world in this book is plagued by darkness outside the castle that shelters those remaining. The elders are strict and require a lot from the warriors, this leads us to a new warrior Elara, the first woman to step up to this title.
Elara is driven and fierce holding herself to high morals and vows wanting to protect those in the castle and her remaining family member. She is looked down upon due to being a woman wanting to be a warrior, but another warrior Valek assists her with her training and becomes someone who she longs for. Its funny that in the beginning it seems they desire each other but think it will not be reciprocated.
Due to the rules by the elders marriage and children are not allowed and it is also forbidden for warriors to wed. This leads both Valek & Elara on a journey for freedom, honour and love.
While I appreciate the author allowing me to read and review this ARC of her book “Fallen Shadows,” i do have to be honest. Her writing itself is great, she knows syntax and how to build great sentences. However, the lack of world-building in a fantasy book is just not going to cut it. Too many authors think that writing spicy scenes is all there is too it, but if there’s no plot; what’s the point? The characters had instant love from the very beginning with no real backstory, and no real connection. The main male was usually misogynist and the main female character was trying to be a “girl boss” without any real emotion or duality. I had no idea what the real point of the elders were, what is there true purpose there? Why do they need the people to feed off of? Where do they come from? And also why are Elara and Varek trying to f eachother over her brother’s sick/dying body in the first few chapters? I think this book needs a lot of work, 2/5 stars for me personally.
This was an ok book. Some parts were very interesting, other parts were very cringy for me. The concept of the elders having ultimate control over everything was very intriguing to me and fed into the forbidden love between Elara and Varek.
The storyline gave me slight "The outsider" vibes mixed with one dark window.
The World building and character development wasn't the best, but it wasn't the most I've read. The writing style and "old" language was not my up of tea and not something I would typically head.
Thank you Netgallery and Raven More for this Arc and allowing me to read this!
Thank you to Raven More for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
You know when you listen to someone telling you a story about something you know nothing about, so you feel like you're missing half of the point? That's what Fallen Shadows felt like. It read more like the second book in a series, where we've seen enough of the world to understand it, and after the main characters have already fallen for each other, had some issues and worked them out. Instead, the reader is plopped into a world they're expected to understand and into a romance already in full bloom (with no history given, I might add).
The writing was sometimes beautiful in its imagery, and other times seemed to try too hard for an old time feel. Much of the dialogue and inner thoughts of the MCs seemed out of place or just plain awkward.
Overall, I could have enjoyed the story and even the cringey characters had there been adequate world building.
In a world where love is forbidden. Elara and Varek are warriors protecting the people against the evil beasts that roam the kingdom. Elara’s heart loves Varek but she must push him away to save him and her brother. Everyone is under the control of the Elders using amulets for protection but is a deception to enslave people. They are asked to go on a quest to find a serum from the Tree of Life. Elara wants to use the sap to save her brother.
I want to be upfront and say that i dnfed this book at about 40% as i am definitely not the target audience.
Fans of the Insta-love trope, touch her and die, love triangles and forbidden love, would probably like this book.
A huge part of my decision to DNF this book was based on the couple Elara and Varek. I could not make myself be invested in their characters and relationship due to the instalove trope. I felt that as the reader i never really understood why they loved each other, vague allusion are made but i never got a solid understanding of their relationship which makes much of the scenes that would probably read romantic to some fall flat for me.
the biggest thing i take issue with and is primarily what my reasoning for a 2 star review is the lack of world building. i’ve heard that there is some at the end of the book, but there was very little in that 40% i read which imo is not okay. bc of the severe lack of world building i struggled to ground myself in the world and become actually immersed in the story. i had so many questions constantly that are not answered or even hinted at being answered by 40%.
this world has the beginnings of what could be a really interesting gothic fantasy (it reminds me a lot of One Dark Window in its concept with fevers and such), but fell flat in a lot of ways on delivering that gothic vibe again mostly bc of the completely lack of necessary world building.
I like the bones of this book and I feel it had the potential to be great, but it wasn’t quite my style of writing and I ended up struggling to finish and see past it.
I would have loved some more world building and background for our main characters. I think if there was some more padding out of the story it would have been easier to connect with Elara and Varek.
It also felt a little wordy at times, like it was hard work to read and sentences took 20 words to say what 3 could have.
Overall it was okay, but probably not my style of read.
I loved this book from the beginning. This is a new author for me and the writing is phenomenal. I read a lot of fantasy books so I often find the plots to be somewhat predictable. This book kept me guessing at every turn and had so many unique pieces. The story of Varek and Elara is heartwarming, relatable, and unique. A must read.
I got this book as an arc through NetGalley. The cover is stunning, and sounded super interesting! Unfortunately there’s just… so much going on and not a whole lot going on? The first fourth of the book was super intriguing and had great promise. Around the halfway I was confused what the heck was happening. I was thinking about DNFing, but a character said something where I had to find out if it was true or not.. even though it didn’t make sense. The last half of the book was very rushed. The spelling of the MMC interchanged randomly and that was confusing. This wasn’t my cup of tea, and I’m so sad.
Rating: 2.75/5 Penguins (rounded up) Quick Reasons: instalove; the "chosen" one; interesting world; flat though intriguing characters and fast paced story building; some confusing scenes
HUGE thanks to Raven More and Defy the Dark Publishing for the title! My review is voluntarily written and in no way impacted or altered by this gesture.
Varek and I stand rooted, a novel scent tickling my senses, crisp and unfamiliar. A guttural snark rips through my concentration. "There's a stir within this sea of gold," I murmur, more to myself than to him.
I struggled to review this one, Penguins. Let's start with the good things. I REALLY feel like the ideas of the world, the magics, the society, the monsters, etc that the author plays with in this book are unique and intriguing. I WANTED to fall deeply into this story. I wanted to be pulled away, to learn all the nooks and crannies and secrets that lurk beneath these pages. The characters were interesting, the "star crossed romance" could have REALLY brought this journey to life. The prose was bordering on purple and plain, a delicate mix that worked well for this story especially when woven between the dual point of views. I wanted SO BADLY for this book to sweep me up and spit me out a changed reader.
Unfortunately, I struggled to suspend my disbelief and really be drawn into the world of this novel. I feel as if this book started page one, more like in act 25. The characters' don't so much leap off the page as TUMBLE from them, seeming more 2 dimensional than really fleshed out. Their romance feels like it's stuck somewhere on the fifth act, instead of as a "just beginning" feeling (honestly, it feels like where WE start this book, should be more like the MIDDLE of the read than the beginning). While the magic is unique (for the bits and pieces we get) I had more questions than I ended with answers. A lot of this story was left to be desired, and I ended up more frustrated than fulfilled at the end.
There is no one for me to confide in. No person of worth wants a warrior for a friend because we die too young to matter and I'll never be fully accepted by the male warriors. I don't care; the only person I want to be with I almost killed to earn a title. But I cannot--will not kill him. If the Elder demanded a death, I would have surrendered and fallen on Varek's blade.
STILL, while this book wasn't the read for me, I would recommend to lovers of steampunk fantasy, unique magic systems, and worlds that seem to leap off the page at you as you read. The characters are intriguing, the monsters are terrifying, and just because this book didn't work for ME doesn't mean that YOU won't love it. The shadows are falling, Penguins...are YOU ready to see what hides beneath them?
Really enjoyed being an ARC reader for this book. Strong characters who kept my attention for the full book. I loved the points of view and great story telling. I look forward to reading more from her!!
Spoiler: I love this touch her and die scene from the MMC:
“You cannot have her. I will kill you before I let you touch her.” The raw timbre of determination and protectiveness vibrates within me. “I know.” “Yet you will still help? Knowing you will never have her?” I ask, confusion and mistrust swirling. “Yes.” How can I trust a man who signed the paper to imprison her in the first place?”

I’m about 40% of the way done and I’m gonna have to DNF this for now. I really wanted to love this and the story itself isn’t bad but I’m finding it hard to keep up with the lack of character and world building as to why they love each other. I’m on page 125 and have no idea why. Then enters Torin and he has some interest in Elara relating to his past love. I’m not sure if this is gonna turn into a why choose trope type situation. I love a touch her and die moment but the renaissance era “unhand her” type writing just doesn’t hit the same. It’s just not for me, as I read it I find myself wanting to read other books vs being captivated by this story in itself. I don’t dislike it but I also don’t find myself enjoying it either.
Elara Life before…the Ravenous curse, before her parents had died, before her sister had given up her life in search of medicine for Elara when she was young had been so different. As an elite warrior she would be allowed to leave to go beyond the outer walls of the castle to search for the much-needed medicine to hold back the sickness that was befalling her people. But why did the Elders insist she go against Varek to gain this highly placed position. Did they know she had feelings for him. She was the only female warrior and was better than most of the males. Testing her, placing obstacles in her path, allowing others to harass her continued. Now her brother was ill, and she needed help. There was only one person she could trust to bring a healer to her room for him. If the Elders found out he was sick, they would send him beyond the walls left to the Ravenous curse. The virus that turned humans into vicious monsters.
Varek He had more than one secret he must keep. The Elders were not forgiving or tolerant beings. With the magic they held, they controlled all within the walls. He had turned away the female pleasurer the Elders had sent but he would pay the price they would demand because he wanted no other than Elara. It pained him to see her fight against others, to listen while they talked of her with disrespect. Her call for his help to bring a healer would give him some time with her away from the eyes of others. But when she found his greatest secret, he was surprised that she would refuse to expose him. The way she looked at him could she have feelings for him as well?
The Elders Their magic allowed them to hold sway over life and death. They controlled the warriors by forbidding them to marry, sending women to pleasure the men who won in the games. They held sway over food, shelter, even decided who might live with the help of a healer and who wasn’t worthy enough. They paid any indiscretion with death. Their power knew only one bound, they couldn’t leave to search for the much-needed serum that could be made from the Tree of Life. Varek and Elara were becoming a problem, they make an example of them burning them at the stack.
Then the Ravenous cursed creatures broke through the gate killing with savage force. The Elders needed sap from the Tree of Life and they knew who they would send. If they brought back the sap, well but with like one would die. The only thing that protected people was the magic within the amulets the people wore. But Elara’s was damaged, and she was having terrifying dreams about her family, the Ravenous creatures. The journey Elara and Varek would set out on would turn their world upside down. They would face the decision to run or return to the people they left behind within the castle walls and change everyone’s life. But would the Elders let them live long enough to share what they had learned.
At the story’s center are the two main characters, Elara and Varek. We learn a little of their life before the Elders came before the Ravenous Curse that had devastated so many. A tale of strength, perseverance, and love for family and each other. There were several twists I didn’t see coming but I couldn’t put the book down. In this book, there are only humans, the Elders with their magic and strictures and the Ravenous creatures. It may seem a simple story at first survival under a tyrannical rule, a deadly virus, and a journey to find a cure for the deadly virus. As I got further into the tale, I realized there was so much more to the tale. The heart at the before and after, the differences between then and now, who were the Elders, what of the Ravenous and other territories. Elara and Varek’s love, the way they cared protected each other, supported each other under cover, but also stood by each other not backing down in the face of death. There was the pain felt at the loss family members, friends, and curiosity about those who had been changed by the virus. I recommend this title and hope that there will be more. However, I gave this a four-star rating for the depiction of the Ravenous creatures and the way in which they managed to murder so many humans. I would have to leave a spoiler to explain, which I won’t, I have my own theories. But it left me with questions and tested my extremely loose logic compass. I wait hopefully for the next book to learn more about the people of this very imaginatively creative world. I will say that Varek and Elara will find their peace at the close of this book.
I received an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion of what I read.
Firstly, thank you Raven More for sending me an ARC of this book! There will definitely be a lot of people who really love this book and the instalove within its pages.
⭐️⭐️.5
To start I’d like to stay the cover art and synopsis of the book we’re both stunning and intriguing and if I’d seen this at a bookstore I would likely have searched it up to look at reviews to see if it was up my ally.
The story started out very slow for me after the first initial chapter however it left me very curious to continue and I especially liked the dual POV. However it was at about chapter 9 or 10 I realised I felt the book was lacking a lot of what I’d hoped to see in the world building up to that point but still interesting enough that I continued to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of the book and was excited to see how the main characters relationship progressed but even though Varek (MMC) was my favourite of the two I felt frustrated by the way he was constantly talking of restraint and patience and never actually showing any especially in regards to Elara (FMC) and her wishes. I found also that a lot of the time characters would be one place and then all of a sudden be somewhere entirely different like pieces of the story were accidentally skipped.
I felt the world building wasn’t quite developed enough and even though for the majority of the book they were in the castle I still didn’t really know what the castles layout entailed. In a similar way I would have loved a better description of the Ravenous. I felt the description changed a bit and was quite vague, all I can really remember was they had long arms with claws, sharp teeth and were very large and for some reason I could only think back the the grieves from the maze runner even though I knew they were far from what the author was trying to describe. I wish the magic system had been explored/ explained more as I loved the premise of it but felt a little confused as to how the elders possessed such power and how the castles people never questioned it to begin with though I can see that it could be further explained in another book.
Everything seemed to lead up to the “Quest” the FMC and MMC go on but I felt it was short and entirely too uneventful for how it was made to feel and up until this point and after I was slightly frustrated at people’s lack of acknowledgement towards Elara’s achievements and actions in battle even though she did just as much as Varek in some instances. People were always thanking Varek and never really Elara even after some came to accept her as a warrior.
Overall I felt the book was a little under developed but has such promise if some plot holes are fleshed out a bit more. There were instances in the characters POV’s that they referred to themselves by name (an accident I believe) and Some of the wording was incredibly well written and then other sentences didn’t flow well and were hard to comprehend. I love the idea of the book and the world the author is trying to convey but I don’t think it quite does what the author was hoping for. With very little background information the world building and magic system was lacking and it felt more like a second book compared to a first like I was missing a lot of key details.

"You cannot have her, I will kill you before i let you touch her."
Elara and Varek are warriors defending a castle of despair from gastly monsters known as the ravenous with the help of their savious; the Elders. But when they can no longer deny their feelings and they are caught in bed together, their world is thrown into chaos, and everything they thought they knew may turn out to be wrong.
The premise of this book is incredible. The plot is fantasic. The characters, though sometimes frustrating and lacking in chemistry, are multidimensional, and you begin to feel for them. The supporting characters make the world feel full and interesting. Unfortunately, this was a difficult book to get through.
The story starts in the midst of action, and the instalove has already developed, which made it hard to root for the MCs. The first half of the book i felt like i knew nothing about the world in which they live except that it sucks. It felt like i was reading book 2 of a series and if that was the case i would happily have gone back and read the first.
The style of writing was intrigueing. It was written like a historical novel; wordy and proper. At first i felt it hard to get into but after the first 100 pages i felt it complimented the story nicely and started to enjoy it. Another issue i found was the pace. It was so quick in some areas, and so slow in others, evenetually it did start to even out a bit more which helped my enjoyment levels. I do however wish that the editing process was a bit more thorough. Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and just silly issues could have been easily fixed with another sweep through or 2. One chapter was even from Arianna's POV... who is Arianna? I dont think she is a character in this book... i figured out that it was actually an Elara chapter, but it was silly things like that that made my reading experience not as enjoyable.
Having said all that, when i got to about 75% through, i really started to enjoy the book. I liked the twists it has, and i enjoyed how different things tied into earlier chapters. It was a shame it took me so long to get into it because the story line is great and im sure plenty of people will enjoy this book, but because of the issues i had with it, i needed to get it 3 stars.

In a world where love is forbidden, marriage is a privilege approved only for a select few, and secret desires of the heart can get you killed….
Elara is the first ever woman allowed to train as a warrior. She has faced hardship and pain in her past and is driven by the need to care for her younger brother. Her ferocity, courage, and strong-will are only outmatched by her passion.
Varek, leader of the Elite Warriors, is the most prestigious position within the warrior rank. But he is not content in his position, he yearns for more in life… passion, intimacy, marriage, family…. all forbidden.
The Elders send Elara and Varek on a mission to the Tree of Life which will help the Kingdom’s survival against the Ravenous Curse. When Elara’s brother falls ill with the death fever, her mission to succeed becomes more personal and of the utmost importance over fiery passions of the heart.
“Warmth curls through my belly, but no, I cannot care for him. One day I might have to kill him.” “Our souls have danced in the fire, and yet, we emerge-bound, surviving, wearing.” “We are not pawns to be sacrificed.” “You belong where the steel sings, at my side in the night.”
The chemistry between Elara and Varek was sizzling, full of heat, passion, and intimacy. Varek’s strong presence helped to anchor Elara during her most dire times; and Elara was the guiding light for Varek, steering him away from darkness. Their emotions were so strong and dripped off the page! I enjoyed this story and their ending was well deserved after enduring so much.
The ending is a sweet HEA, leaving me satisfied and curious for the next book!
I received an ARC and am leaving my honest review.
The beginning of the book was promising, filled with tension, mystery, and a captivating drama revolving around a mysterious curse. The introduction of Elara and Varek, both warriors and lovers entangled in a forbidden love, added an extra layer of intrigue, drawing readers into their tumultuous world.
Initially, the narrative held my attention effortlessly; the story unfolded with compelling force, and the dynamics of the world were genuinely fascinating. However, the initial allure began to wane around the 10-15% mark. The story and character development, once robust, seemed to lose momentum.
The relationship between Elara and Varek felt like an insta-love scenario, offering moments of spice without the necessary scaffolding of world-building or character development. Unfortunately, there was a notable absence of explanations regarding the peculiarities within the story – why certain things existed or what significance they held. This lack of contextual information left me yearning for a deeper understanding of the world and its inhabitants.
While the beginning set high expectations with its tension and mystique, the narrative's potential faltered in sustaining that level of engagement. In the latter part, the story seemed to prioritize the romantic angle without adequately anchoring it in a well-established world or providing meaningful character backgrounds. The absence of these crucial elements left the latter part of the book feeling somewhat flat and disconnected.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What the actual fuck… I’m so sick of books with shit writing, no sense of grammar or punctuation, and unnecessarily wordy. And for the love of the English language, do not use a word without understanding its meaning.
I swear to god my class of elementary schoolers could have written AND edited this better. Fuck.
This is less about the plot (which is lost in the mostly unintelligible writing) and more about my fucking burning rage that ‘authors’ seem to think putting out shit prose is acceptable. Writing, true storytelling, is an art. It takes years to hone and refine skill. And while I do not expect books to be perfect, I damn well expect them to be fucking edited if you’re going to ask someone to purchase them. We have completely lost the respect and beauty of the craft. And apparently, readers aren’t valued or respected either or there is no way this beloathed book would have graced my shelves.
I spotted four grammatically incorrect sentences in the first two pages, five instances of incorrect or no punctuation, and a calamitous level of fluff that served no purpose except to showcase the writers obvious lack of fundamental knowledge of the English language. If I have to read another subpar overhyped TikTok book that should have remained an inside thought, I’m going to scream.
This is the reason people give up on reading. Because I can’t give negative stars as a review, I will leave it with none.
I start with a short text why I give only 3 stars... It just wasn't my type of story. But it can be yours. Here is what I experienced with this book:
The story is about Elara and Varek, two warriors of the Gremlock castle who live to defend the last people against the Cursed. Times are harsh and love between warriors is forbidden. But how can one ignore the strongest feeling and follow the strict rules of the Elders, a small group of wizards who protects all people from the Curse by providing amulets? Elara and Varek struggle and get caught in the end. To regain their Elite Warrior status both are send to a nearly impossible quest to retrieve an essence the Elders need. But for this they need to leave the castle into the wild land full of beasts and the Ravenous. Will they both make it back? What will they find beyond the safety of the castles walls?
Follow their adventures and wild journey through a world of danger, deception and lies.
If you are into real fantasy mixed with some spice and a good love story then this is your book. The author takes you on a wild journey into the kind of medieval world of the two protagonists. This book is the first of a series but does not end with a cliffhanger which is nice.
Two fierce warriors who love each other but are forbidden to be together in the midst of their world that is threatened by horrible creatures that roam free outside the castle walls - what more could you ask for?
I really enjoyed Fallen Shadows. I instantly loved the connection between Elara & Varek - and was rooting for them the entire book. I loved the world that the author created… the beauty of nature is something that is long forgotten and in the past for them since they’re bound to the walls of the castle that keeps them safe from the Ravenous.
I’ll admit I had SO MANY QUESTIONS regarding the Ravenous and how they came to be, the Elders who rule, the amulets that provide protection and so much more… and these questions you carry with you throughout a majority of the book before they’re answered. But they do finally get answered! I was so glad to finally get these answers as it was driving me crazy knowing we were missing a HUGE piece of the puzzle.
I definitely would recommend Fallen Shadows to anyone who is a Romantasy fan. I don’t think it will disappoint and it definitely leaves you wanting MORE of Elara & Varek!
