Forever marked by dark magic, Marai reels from her emotional departure with Ruenen. She seeks sanctuary with her people, the other fae, hiding in the secluded Badlands, in order to heal her fractured heart. Believing Ruenen dead, Marai has become a target of King Rayghast of Tacorn and his own twisted, dark powers. Marai will do whatever she can to protect the fae, all while learning the true depths of her magic and heritage.
However, the war between Tacorn and Nevandia still brews in the distant Middle Kingdoms, and Keshel sees a vision of the continent being thrust into chaos and devastation.
Marai must make a choice for herself and her people–to escape to far away Andara, or stand and fight, once again becoming the Lady Butcher. Will she use an ancient faerie queen’s cursed ring to exact revenge upon Rayghast? Or will dark magic consume her, pulling her deeper into its unknown, dangerous power?

☆ Her tear-lined eyes blazed with feriocity. "Do it." Marai unshackled her magic. ☆
Wow, that's a super easy 5☆'s from me. The absolute chills I had from the battle portion in this book were insane! Book 2 of the Dark Magic Series by J E Harter was an explosive continuation! After reading book 1, I knew this was going to be a series I would thoroughly enjoy, and this book has truly exceeded my expectations.
The writing is so easy to fall into and was expertly done, enveloping me as I lost myself into the story for hours. The characters, as before, are phenomenally written with Marai - a complete badass and Ruen - one of the most genuine, lovable characters and relatable.
One of my favourite things about fantasy is the policts, especially with how J E Harter has brought the council to life. I found myself deeply invested in the structure of this world and how realistic it was portrayed. With such a prominent integration of magic folk to an empire who has not forgiven past acts on either side! It was refreshing to be fonted with the truth that acceptance takes time and is not immediate. Even if they are the reason all was not lost!
That cliffhanger was brutal. But so, so good. That last revelation both ripped my heart out, angered me to oblivion, and generally scared for Marai!
Book 3 cannot come soon enough, and I must thank J E Harter for gifting me the ARK for this book, I am so grateful to be a part of the journey 🗡
Book 1 in this series is already out, so dont forget to grab a copy ready for the release of book 2 on February 7th, 2024!!
GOD DAMN IT SHE DONE IT AGAIN. THE ENDING!!! WHY!!!
J.E. Harter is a magical storyteller. Her badass heroine Marai grew into herself in this book. She felt with her past, fought for the present, and hoped for a future. She was able to bring her family back together. This book developed so well with ending the first half of their journey’s Into the second half.
Basically this should be a Netflix series. The way Harter developed relationships, you can feel the different between love. Love between Ruen and Marai feels different from her family. I love the way it flows and then she hits you over the head with a brick. Thanks.
It is for fans of Throne of Glass and The Witcher. I promise if you pick up this series, you won’t ever want to put it down.
Thank you Harter for sharing your stories with the world!!!
I need the 3rd book like now, please! I could not put this book down. I had to know what happened to the characters. The drama and trauma and romance and people got me all caught up in my feelings. The world and its people are fascinating. The story moves at a good pace, not too quick and not too drawn out. I wanted to scream at the end, and I'm desperately waiting to see what happens next!
I was provided an ARC in exchange for my honest review! 🫶
- Minor Spoilers Ahead -
4.5 stars for me!
The return to Astye was great! I throughly enjoy the worldbuilding in this series, each kingdom has its own personality and the characters we meet (such as Nieve) really upped the stakes of this book. We also get a look in to Rayghast’s POV and even though Rhia is anti-magic, homegirl is one of the most compelling, interesting, and girlboss characters. How she put up with everything? WE’LL NEVER KNOW, SHE IS A SURVIVOR WE LOVE HER
The romance? *mwah* chefs kiss. It’s a slowburn but the good kind where it makes sense that the romance isn’t on the front of their minds due to their responsibilities. Ruenen is adorkable and the person that Marai needed in her life and I need to know what happens after that cliffhanger! I
The only reason this wasn’t a full five star for me is that the pacing felt super fast and when you combine that with a long roster of new characters, some scenes felt a little underwhelming and just a tad confusing HOWEVER THE BATTLE? Amazing, showstopping, incredible.
For a second I thought this was gonna be a duology and IM SO HAPPY THAT IT’S GOING TO BE LONGER. I was so worried that our time with these characters was done and IT’S NOOTTTTTTTTT
This is one of my new favorite series, everyone seriously needs to read The Butcher and the Bard and THEN THIS ONE
I had high hopes for this book after loving the first one, but overall, it ended up just being okay for me. While the buildup was promising, I ended up wanting a little more. The spice, for all its slow-burn lead-up, was sudden and too short-lived, in my opinion.
The battle scene, which should have been a major highlight, felt underdeveloped and lacked the intensity I was hoping for. One of the most frustrating parts was Ruenen not staying with her after waking up from being morrally wounded—given everything they had been through, that choice felt completely out of character and disappointing.
On the positive side, I loved the inclusion of magical creatures (especially the vampire!), and the side storyline with Raghast and Rhia was really intriguing. Still an enjoyable read. I just wanted a bit more in some areas and didnt agree with some plot decisions regarding the mmc!!

I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What a follow up to The Butcher and the Bard! This book picks up literally where the last one left off and just keeps going from there. The amount of action and plot development that happened in this book in just a little below 500 pages blew my mind. I grew to love Marai and Ruen more than I ever thought possible and it was heartwarming how all of the characters came together to fight for a common goal. There was a sense of camaraderie and, of course, THE CLIFFHANGER END. My gosh, I need more!
I'm obsessed with these characters! A slow burn romance with an epic battle, politics and all the MAGIC you could as for 🖤
🖤 ARC REVIEW 🖤
5 ✰✰✰✰✰ Might be my new favorite series under TOG
Would I recommend: YES! To all Fantasy Romance readers who love adventure, battles, politics and strong FMCs
Me throughout this book: 😥😐🤔😲😍🥰😃😁😥😢😭🥰😍😮🤯😭
🖤 Grumpy x Sunshine 🖤 FMC bodyguard 🖤 Slow burn Romance 🖤 Touch him & die 🖤 Politics 🖤 Underworld Creatures 🖤 Elemental magic 🖤 An Evil King 🖤 Dark Magic 🖤 Vampires and Werewolves 🖤 Kingdoms at War 🖤 Found Family
I really loved The Butcher and the Bard. But this book tops it. Red Lands and Black Flames was absolutely wonderfully amazing. This picks up right where book 1 left off and thank Lirr because that ending had me shook. I was really looking forward to the world building and plot development and I wasn’t disappointed. It was easy to visualize Nevandia and the beautiful land of Astye. The plot line of making the kingdom safe for not just humans but for all magical beings is so well done. I am really enjoying the new characters that were introduced in this book. They all have such great personalities and actually have a purpose. A very well paced action packed story and I can't wait to see what J.E. Harter does next with these characters. I 'am so invested in this series and in this world.
J.E. Harter’s writing is so beautiful and easy to follow. The way the point of views are written makes the story flow like a song. Just beautifully written.
💖Marai and Ruenen have my whole heart💖 I truly love a good slow burn romance love story that is both realistic and unique.
Ruenen thought then that the heart was the most curious of instruments. How could those luminescent eyes pluck so at his heartstrings? Why did his ears swoon with a melody only she produced? She was the singular song he ever wanted to sing.
… wow
Chapter 29-37: The way I cried through this range of chapters. Devastating.
The ending: I AM SO UNWELL!!! The cliffhanger. I literally gasped and yelled NOOOO at the end. J.E. Harter is going to kill me haha I am so scared.
Character Feedback & Favorite Quotes: Might be spoilers 🙃
♡ Ruenen ♡ The most genuine and lovable MMC ever. His growth, he is more than just a bard!!! No spoilers but when he discovers his courage and strength and POWER — Swoon! He truly is so good, trying to make Nevandia a safe place for humans and all magical creatures. My favorite part about him is the amount of respect he has for Marai. He doesn’t stand in her way or hold her back to protect her. He stands by her and trusts her. No damsel in distress BS, so refreshing. Well written. #ruenenisfeminist 🖤😍🫠
“I win” Ruenen whispered
♡ Marai ♡ This badass is such a goddess. I love her so MUCH! I was so captivated by her growth, internal healing and her journey of realizing her worth. She deserves all the happiness in the world and I am here for it. Book 3 is going to be so good! ahhhh! 🖤
As the air came alive with electric, volatile power, Thora looked up at Marai. Her tear-lined eyes blazed with ferocity. “Do it.” Marai unshackled her magic.
Keshel: Great character! I am mad at him but that's okay. I hope to learn more about his secrets in book 3
Leif: I don't have words. I just want to give them a hug.
Aresti: another BADASS. Even though she was just introduced, her growth from the beginning of the book to the end was so good!
Raife and Thora: Protect them at all costs.
Kadiatu: AHHHH my heart! This sweet baby angel is my favorite character in this book. Stronger than she thinks. Smarter than she lets on. ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
Nosficio: I am so happy we got more of Nosficio! He is so important and I don’t even think he knows it. More vamps!! And werewolves ♡
Commander Avilyard: I really really loved him being an openly decent person. Love this man.
The Council: I don’t entirely trust them. I am still trying to figure out if Holfast truly is a decent person. The politics in this book were so enticing, very easy to follow and for once not boring as heck.
King Rayghast: HATE THIS PURELY EVIL MAN. A real 100% villain. Getting the POV of the villain adds so much to the story. I really loved that J.E.Harter showed us his thoughts and what was happening on the other side of the continent. Well done.
Queen Rhia: badass! I hope she uses her powers for good in the future.
Overall Star Rating: 5 ✰✰✰✰✰ Would I recommend: YES!!!
I was a fan of the Butcher and the Bard (Book 1 in the Dark Magic series) so I was eager to read the follow up. Red Lands and Black Flames did NOT disappoint. Is it fair to say it’s even better than the first one? I’ll do my best to keep this spoiler free, but man, it was SO riveting!
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and was invested from page 1. It picks up right where the first one left off but delivered some unexpected twists and turns. Honestly the lightning fast pace keeps you at the edge of your seat right from the start, all building to an intense, incredible battle sequence that is expertly written!
As with the first one, where this book truly shines is with the characters. Marai and Ruenen’s relationship takes center stage, and the slow burn is just sooo satisfying. There was some major character developments as well (keeping it spoiler free) that were truly original and just a lot of fun!
This book featured a ton of new characters but it didn’t feel overwhelming to me. I particularly liked Marai’s fae family, and learning more about her background and how the family dynamic worked. Kadi is such a sweet character.
The final battle was INTENSE. There were more than a few tears when all was said and done.
As with the first book, the author left us on a major cliffhanger so I’m chomping at the bit to read the third one. I definitely recommend this series, but make sure you read the first one or you will be lost!
This book. I loved the first one so much I didn’t think there would be a way to top it, and yet here we are. I’m so grateful to have been gifted and ARC.
The book picks up where the first one left off. It does have a bit of a slow start, focusing mostly on Marai with her fae family. Having left Ruenen she immediately regrets it, but is unable to get back because of using too much of her powers, and being too weak. And although I truly missed the banter between the two of them, I felt this gave us (the reader) a chance to see Marai in a light we hadn’t before. We also get to learn more about her past. But I will say - I was even more excited when we actually got Ruenen back. He is the perfect bard sunshine to Marai’s grumpy butcher, and balances the story well.
Where the first book focused more on running from their pasts, this book Marai and Ruenen are forced to face them. No longer a story about traveling, this book is a story about war, and loss, and dark vs. light.
There is more magic, mystical creatures, and the weavings of fate. Moreover, I truly loved seeing the characters continue to develop and grow.
I will 100% be getting the next one as soon as it is out.
I received an ARC of Red Lands and Black Flames by @j.e.harter and I’m so glad I was chosen because The Butcher and the Bard definitely left me wanting to keep reading. Marai and Ruen continue their quest to defeat Rayghast despite uncovering some hard truths about their pasts. The slowest of slow burn romance picks up a little steam while they recruit supporters and fully accept their roles in shaping the future of the kingdom. It all comes together for an epic and heartbreaking battle leading up to an explosive conclusion that left me desperate for the next book in the series. If you love high fantasy romance with reluctant heroes, fae, vampires, and werewolves (oh my!) and epic quests with found family, magic and plot twists galore then you will love this book as much as I did. Head over to Amazon to pre-order and start reading the minute it is delivered, I promise you will not be disappointed! #jeharter #thebutcherandthebard #redlandsandblackflames #arcreader #bookstagram #darkmagicseries #romantasy #highfantasy #slowburnromance #foundfamily #morallygreyismyfavoritecolor
This book has my heart wrenched in pieces. In this spectacular sequel, Marai, Ruenen, and their comrades must prepare to battle the horrid king Rayghast and his darkness that plagues the land and ruind everything he touches. Marai's character development will both empower you and break your heart. Terrifying shadow monsters plague the land, deep wounds from the first book that need healing, character arcs that suck you in, and a battle that rivals that of Helms Deep. J. E. Harter held nothing back in this final battle.
If you like ACOTAR, Mistborn, or LotR, you will LOVE this series.
Content Warnings: Graphic battle scenes, talk of sexual assault, a few F words, and one spicy scene. For a more comprehensive list, see the first couple pages of the book. Personally, I don't like reading spice in my books, but this was easy enough to skip over without it affecting the story.
But seriously, why is everyone losing their minds about Fourth Wing when this series is so much better??
"We will not be conquered... I'm a nightmare." There are SO many moments in this book that just gave me chills. It's action packed; every single chapter will have you in it's grips. This book was even better than the first, and I loved the first.
We get more insight into Marai's and Ruenen's history and these characters grow so much from who they are the beginning of book one. From the very beginning, you can't help but to just cross your fingers and pray they get their happy ending. This is a slowwww burn but all the sweeter for it.
The world building really takes off when the politics start to take a front burner, and it's never dull! You get to know so many new characters and watch all of them overcome prejudices and obstacles and god I fell in love with so many of the side characters too. There's a huge twist ending cliffhanger that leaves you SO ready for the third book to come out already. The ending did not disappoint!
I was provided an ARC of this exchange for my honest review so let’s get into it!! Firstly, this book is a wonderful sequel to its predecessor “The Butcher and the Bard”. This book manages to take all the aspects that worked well in the first book and elevate them to a whole new level. Secondly, they were a vast number of great additions to this book that distinguishes it from the first. One of the best new additions has to be the introduction of a whole array of new characters. This small addition adds so much emotion and tension to the battle scenes, trust me you will cry. Thirdly, the world building was also greatly expanded upon within this book. It was so exciting to see all the pieces of this world start to come together. To conclude, I’m very interested to see where this series is taken, and I recommend that if you haven’t already picked up this series to do so immediately!!
There are no words to describe how I feel about this series. At least not the right words.
J.E. Harter has done it again! The characters and world-building rival that of Throne of Glass and Plated Prisoner. I absolutely love everything this story has to offer and it was a wild ride. I laughed and cried and gasped in shock. The plot twists are amazing and I cannot wait to see what is next!
I have had the pleasure to read both books as ARCs and their content never cease to amaze me. They are beautifully written and this book had so much more insight to the world Marai and Ruenen live in. It was nice to see all the new characters and how relationships and alliances are built.
I 100% recommend this series to anyone and everyone. I do recommend that this be read IMMEDIATELY after book one or after a refresher. It took me a few chapters to reorient myself to the situation.
I held off on reading this one due to book 3 coming so soon. I didn't want to be left hanging. And I'm glad I waited because that cliffhanger!
I absolutely loved the first installment, The Butcher and the Bard. So I knew I was going to love this one as well. There were a few slow parts for me. Mostly with Marai and Ruenen's romance bits. To me, it was a little drawn out towards the beginning of the book. And with a looming war coming, I just wanted some action 😆.
And boy, did we get it! I absolutely loved the pacing at the end of the book. The quick chapters and jumping between the POVs were some of my favorite writing in this series. You felt the despair, heartbreak, and threat of the war raging on. I can't wait to jump into Queen of the Shadow Menagerie.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this book and WOW!!!
It was such a great read!! I was in a reading slump and this book had me wanting to read more. The butcher and the bard was amazing but so was red land and black flame. This series really has everything that you could want in a fantasy series, fairies, werewolves, vampires and pirates!! Although I do want to say villains in a lot of book don't die anymore ( insert eye roll). I 'm anxiously waiting for the third book!!! I love Marai and Ruenen characters. The cliff hanger had me shocked with how the book ended!! This series needs to be talked about more!!
Absolutely stellar second book in The Dark Magic Series. JE Harter said “second book syndrome who?” I was beyond excited to see more of Nosficio. I loved him in the first book. Finally getting to see a vulnerable side to Marai was just what the readers needed. The book had some laughs, some heartbreak and great battle scenes. But, that ending!? That last spoken line had me so ready to keep on reading. Ahhhh. I can’t wait to see where the author takes these characters. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.
What an amazing sequel, albeit a bit darker than the first in the series. I honestly loved every aspect of the book – the characters and the growth they go through in this book, the vivid world, the magic, and the outstanding storytelling. This book was hard to put down; an emotional roller coaster, with action, twists and turns, love and loss, that kept me at the edge of my seat. And that ending, I’m just lost for words! I can’t wait to read the next in the series. I highly recommend the series.
AHHHH! I was SO EXCITED to get the arc for this book! I was an arc reader for "The Butcher and the Bard" too, and I rated that one 5 stars, but book 2 was even better! So much action! So much drama! I loved all the new characters and getting to see more of the fantasy world. Marai and Ruenen have my heart. I loved the twists and turns, the character growth, the romance, the heartbreak, and that ending! And now I have to wait for book 3 :'(
I love seeing the expansion of the world Marai and Ruenen live in. This story does well with expanding the cast of characters and doing more with the main characters than just going on an adventure. They have family. They have relationships. And it’s complicated and messy, just like real life is sometimes. I enjoy reading anything written by J.E. Harter. If you love action and romance and magic, Red Lands and Black Flames is for you!
Oh my....I loved this book. I truly enjoyed the 1st in the series The Butcher and The Bard, but book 2 exceeded my expectations. Such a terrific writer. I couldn't put it down and it was the first thing I thought about in the morning. Love the slow burn romance with all of it's anticipation and the battle scene was exceptional. I can't wait for number 3. She has created such interesting characters, who knows where she will take them next.
I cannot get enough of this series! The Dark Magic Series has captivating characters, an amazing magic system, and an incredible plot. Red Lands and Black Flames focused on family and interpersonal relationships, while also delving in fantasy politics and warfare that is so prevalent in the fantasy genre. Red Lands and Black Flames is a well executed sequel to the fantastic book that is The Butcher and The Bard. It expanded on the world and characters while adding so much more. The ending to Red Lands and Black Flames had me crying and absolutely shocked! I cannot wait for the third book in the Dark Magic Series to come out!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The plot is STIRRING. I am honestly very pleasantly surprised by this series.
The overall theme of faeries is very familiar, the books are heavily Aelin coded. BUT the plot really got me and I am really eager to continue this journey - wherever it will take us.
I also love the other characters that came up in this story. Queen Rhia is such an intriguing character, can’t wait to see what she will have in store for us in book 3.
This is book two in a series that has quickly become one of my favorites. It's an Epic fantasy, with a strong female lead. I have loved the journey that Marai has taken from when we first met her as the cold killer known as the Butcher, to a strong confidant leader she is turning into. Her relationship with Ruenen is a slow slow slow burn that keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat.
Red Lands and Black Flames was hard to put down. The second in the Dark Magic Series was a rollercoaster adventure with enough twists and turns building to a climatic battle. My heart was tied to the outcasts and misfits - trying to prove themselves and find a place in an hostile society. An unexpected turn at the end brings us into the next book. Spellbinding!
GO READ THIS SERIES. I feel like that's all I need to say. Who says indie authors aren't as legit as trad pub ones? J. E. Harter proves the nay-sayers wrong! Waiting for the 3rd book is going to destroy me.
I’m in love with this series 🖤 The character development and story continue to draw me in for more. I thoroughly appreciate how realistic these characters feel in this magical world. I’m so excited to read the next book in the series.
This book ended with such a twist that I did not see coming. It’s refreshing to be genuinely surprised by a book. I can’t wait til the next one comes out
