Lost Legacies #3

A Shift in Fortune

Rate this book
A few months ago, Bryn was just a girl living in the remote fae village that she had built a life in after being abandoned as a baby. But fate intervened, and her world suddenly became more complicated than she ever could have imagined.

Now she’s living in the human realm and getting a crash course on everything from coffee to supernatural politics. She also finally knows what she is—a valkyrie. Sworn to protect Finn, the son of the exiled fae King, Bryn is determined to live up to her role as his guardian.

Her new friends are helping as much as they can, but none of them can help her master her magic. When Nemain arranges for Bryn to meet with Sigrun, an old valkyrie with a complicated history of her own, she jumps at the chance. Unfortunately Sigrun wants nothing to do with training a new valkyrie.

Bryn is determined to change her mind and enlists the help of the dark-haired and clever Elisa to help. But the deeper she dives into Sigrun’s life, the clearer it becomes that the valkyrie warrior might need Bryn as much as Bryn needs her.

A Shift in Fortune is a long novella told from Bryn's POV. This fast-paced fantasy adventure features a sweet sapphic romance and introduces some fun new characters... and has several amusing moments with Mikhail and Nemain.

Maddox Grey is a queer nonbinary elder millennial who still remembers vividly what it was like to be emotionally damaged by the season two finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

They write morally grey characters who fall for equally unhinged morally grey love interests. And the banter flows as fast as the action in the stories they craft.

When they’re not putting their characters through hell, Maddox is playing video games, reading smut, burying their nose in comic books, or hiding behind a pillow while they watch horror movies.

the sheer amount of grammatical errors and forgotten words made this unreadable. thankful that it was less than 200 pages. really hope the next book is better. the only thing that got me through this book was bryn and elisa being cute, but i also wish there was more tension and build up. i truly have no idea how this is 4.2 stars average.

"A Shift in Fortuney" by Maddox Grey is the third book in the "Lost Legacies" series, and it continues to deliver a thrilling mix of fantasy, mythology, and emotional complexity. The story follows a young woman who, after dying in an attempt to save a friend, is reborn as a valkyrie. While that might sound like a dream scenario for some, the protagonist soon discovers that becoming a valkyrie is just the beginning of a whole new set of challenges. Without a guide or manual for her newfound abilities, she’s thrust into a world of magic and danger, seeking out someone who truly understands her new reality.

Enter Sigrun, an older, jaded valkyrie warrior who initially wants nothing to do with her. Sigrun's reluctance adds layers of tension to the story, especially since the protagonist has only three days to win her over. As the clock ticks, the stakes are raised by Sigrun’s secrets and enemies, pushing the plot into a high-paced, suspenseful direction. The blend of Norse mythology and modern fantasy elements is beautifully done, making for a setting that feels both otherworldly and grounded in emotional stakes.

One of the things I truly appreciated about "A Shift in Fortune" is how the book is rich in plot without relying too much on "spice" or romance-driven drama. While many fantasy books nowadays lean heavily into steamy scenes, Grey focuses instead on the depth of character development, world-building, and the heroine's internal struggles. This makes the story feel more nuanced and layered, which was a refreshing change of pace.

The characters are well-rounded and dynamic. You can feel the weight of their pasts, their losses, and the burdens they carry, which adds emotional depth to the action-packed plot.

Additionally, Krys Janae’s narration for the audiobook version enhances the experience. She perfectly captures the personalities of each character, especially the inner turmoil and growth of the protagonist, making the listening experience immersive and captivating.

In summary, "A Shift in Fortune" is an engaging, plot-driven addition to the "Lost Legacies" series, perfect for readers who enjoy action-packed fantasy with strong characters, rich mythology, and a focus on growth over romance. Maddox Grey balances intrigue, magic, and heart to create a story that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking, leaving readers excited for what comes next.

There are 3 things I need to disclose prior to this review.
1. I have received an advance reader copy of this book for an honest review.
2. I have impulsively purchased two other books by this author in order to fully understand this one.
3. I am biased against werewolves and vampires. I have no patience with them.

And yet, I finished three books in this series, this one included. And I enjoyed them all. Neither the vampires nor the shifters managed to deter me (this was a surprise to me). And I'm not one for wasting time on books I don't enjoy!

So what worked for an impatient hater like me?

It's a book about a freshly born valkyrie - quite an uncommon concept. I mean come on. If that's not enough for you, keep going:

=====

The story's just chill enough to casually read, but deep enough to keep you thinking about. The writing is fun and the characters all unique and interesting. The dynamics of the found family and various motivations behind the characters was quite the colourful box of crayons to unpack. Despite the fact that this was a [relatively] short story arc in an otherwise lengthy, darker saga, it felt like a bit of a cosy fantasy read.

Bryn as a main character is precious and sweet. I want to hug her and pet her and tell her everything is going to be okay. Nemain, our usual protagonist from the previous books takes a little bit of a back seat. And I have to say, I like Nemain a LOT more as a supporting character. She's so much more intriguing to read about this way; as the feral, ancient, chaotic cat parent of a Valkyrie.

I could sit here and gush for ages with points on each character because they're all written with flavour and nuance. The cats alone provide crazy amounts of entertainment value. But I'd like to keep this relatively short.

So I'll get to the easy to read meta scores. Scored on a scale of 1-5.

Plot: 📚📚📚📚
Characters: 👤👤👤👤👤
Cat antics: 🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈
Intrigue: 🕵️🕵️🕵️
Valkyrie depiction: 🪶🪶🪶🪶🪶
Cosiness: ☕☕☕☕☕
Romance: 💖💖
Writing: 🖋️🖋️🖋️🖋️🖋️

Total: 4.25 rounding up to 5 because I honestly devoured this one. It's so far the most enjoyable book in the series and overall a fun read.

Review of A Shift in Fortune (Lost Legacies Book 3) by Maddox Grey

A Shift in Fortune is the third book in the Lost Legacies series by Maddox Grey, and it continues the saga with twists, emotional depth, and a captivating narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Grey’s writing style is both immersive and compelling, drawing you into a world where destiny and fate collide in unexpected ways.

In this installment, the stakes are higher than ever, with the characters facing moral dilemmas, shifting allegiances, and the constant pull of their pasts. Grey excels at character development, creating multi-dimensional protagonists whose growth feels both organic and necessary to the story. Their internal struggles and external challenges add rich layers to the plot, making it much more than just a tale of adventure.

The pacing of the novel is well-balanced, building tension and suspense at the perfect moments, while also allowing for quieter, reflective scenes that give readers time to connect with the characters’ emotional arcs. The action sequences are thrilling, keeping the reader engaged, but it’s the emotional beats that truly shine and make this book memorable.

The romance in A Shift in Fortune is also expertly woven into the narrative. It’s never overpowering but adds another layer of complexity to the characters’ journeys. Grey manages to balance action, romance, and drama, making this a well-rounded read.

Overall, A Shift in Fortune is an excellent continuation of the Lost Legacies series. It delivers an engaging plot, deeply developed characters, and a story that is both thrilling and thought-provoking. Fans of the series will not be disappointed, and newcomers to the world of Lost Legacies will find it an irresistible introduction to the world that Maddox Grey has created.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from BookSirens for giving my two cents. We met valkyrie Bryn in previous books where she bonded with Finn the son of Balor. She has promised to keep him safe. Neiman tells her they are going on a quest of sorts to find Sigrun, am exiled valkyrie who may or may not help Bryn. So off they go along with the vampire kids. What they find is a super quiet area where Sigruns companions are a wolf and a form of cat shifter. Neiman explains the situation and Sigrun gives Bryn 3 days of training...well then...not sure what she can accomplish in 3 days. Bryn knows there's more the story of Sigrun than what her and Neiman let's on. There is smtg in the area that shouldn't be and this gives Bryn and the vamps a good training exercise eventho the threat is real. They find little creatures that are acting strangley and they all decide to investigate. Bryn is at her wits end. Sigrun won't give her what she need and she has a plan to convince her to help...but will it be too late? On the plus site both Bryn and Elisa have processed their like for one another so that's smtg for Bryn to keep positive about. It was nice to learn a bit more about Bryn in this book as she kinda came out of nowhere with Finn. It will be nice to see what she will accomplish in future books.

I received this eARC from Booksirens.com in exchange for an unbiased review.

This is a short story in the Lost Legacies series that takes place after book two. Most of the series so far has centered around a shifter by the name of Nemain, who has spent much of her time tracking down and ending the life of Sebastian. During her time, she settled down on the Washington coast, and has started to make roots. This short story is told more about Bryn, a fae that just came into her powers as a valkyrie. Nemain and friends are trying to help her find a way to learn about her powers, in order for her to protect the one she is bonded to, a fae boy named Finn, who happens to be the heir, and son of the exiled fae king.

I felt just a little lost as I started this story. It had been awhile since I read the last story in this series, and because it was centered more on Nemain, who is in this one as well, but most of the tale is interaction with Bryn. I thought it a fairly quick read, that I am guessing will go to adding some detail and characters that may be appearing in the next regular story in the series. Maddox Grey has done a wonderful job of continuing the storyline, and introducing some new players into the game. An easy day read for anyone that like shifters, vampires, and many types of fae and demons.

Thank you so much to the author, who offered a free eaudio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I liked Bryn's perspective more than Nemain's. Nemain isn't a good audience stand-in because she already knows everything, so we feel like we're playing catch up. Bryn's getting to know the cast like we are, figuring out the dynamics, asking our questions, etc. There's a reason the protagonist is usually new to a world and not someone already immersed in it. And I just liked Bryn in general.

I'm not sure why this was called a romance when the romance was barely there. Not even a subplot, more a romantic element to the story. Pet peeve of mine.

This was a fun adventure, abbreviated though it might have been. Bit of a cliche, seeking help from the grumpy old warrior-cum-recluse. I missed why exactly Sigrun was reluctant; I assume past trauma. Her disinclination to be helpful did become aggravating. I didn't like her very much.

I also missed in book 2 why or how Bryn and Finn were bonded. It's important to know in that it's her motivation as a character, yet at the same time it's unimportant because it's rather inconsequential at this point.

So another improvement. Whatcha got, book 4?

I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review.
It seems like I am going to be a lone dissenting voice here as all the other reviewers seem to have loved this book. That is the great thing about books and readers, we all like different things which is why we have the great variety of reading materials we have.
The issue I have is that while I don't mind different takes on the same thing, for example vampires, I feel that if you go so far from the original concept that the thing becomes unrecognizable you should perhaps consider giving it a different name. Happy little vampire families, winged Valkyries bonding with others and happy little suburban demon towns - sorry just did not work for me.
I appreciate that this is a spinoff from an arc which I have not read so I am missing a lot of world-building and there is a nice little FF romance building up in the background but it really is not for me.

Okay so first off I was a dodo bird and did not read the first two books before reading this novella, which is clearly marked 2.5 and not a standalone. So I was a tad bit lost without the full backstory but that’s absolutely my fault. Either way, I really enjoyed this novella. I enjoyed it so much that I already ordered books 1 & 2 so that I can read them and then do a reread on A Shift in Fortune.

A Shift in Fortune was a quick, easy read, took me less than an hour to complete it. This was my first book by Maddox Grey and they did not disappoint me at all. Definitely dug their claws in me for the long run, will for sure be an insta-buy author for me. Also can we talk about how gorgeous the covers are for this series?! Omg seriously so freaking gorgeous!

I highly recommend you read books 1 & 2 like you’re supposed to before diving into book 2.5. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy and fae.

I actually really loved this novella! Maddox Grey’s “A Shift in Fortune” is a sapphic Valkyrie fantasy romance that I adored.

All of the previous books/novellas in the series have been from Nemain’s POV, so I was really excited once I realized that this one is from Bryn’s!

Bryn is a really intriguing character, and I enjoyed learning more about her personality and her unique magic. Her bond with Finn is only getting stronger, and it was nice to see how much they care about each other.

Grey also introduced a new character, Sigrun, who is a Valkyrie as well. Nemain is determined to get Sigrun to mentor Bryn, but Sigrun has some reservations.

I also loved all the banter between the characters - this is one of my favorite things about Grey’s writing style, and it never fails to make me laugh out loud. And the tension between Nemain and Mikhail was definitely noticeable!

All in all, this was another great addition to this series! I’m so attached to these characters, and I’m excited to see what happens next.

As with any and all Maddox Grey books, this one was top tier. A sapphic romance that is action packed (as expected with this series) and continues with the found family trope that I cannot get enough of. Relatively quick read that is masterfully written and easy to read. I absolutely love this series and cannot get enough.

This part of the story, while still involves my girl Nemain, follows Bryn. A lovely, sweet Valkyrie who is learning her powers to protect the one that she is fated to, Finn, a fae prince, son of the exhaled fae king. In comes Sigrun, fellow Valkyrie who Nemain is attempting to convince to mentor Bryn. During their training, Nemain brings along the apex vamps, including Elisa. And romance blossoms in the most unexpected of places.

Valkyries and Norse mythology have always been intriguing to me, so when this stories focus was on a Valkyrie, I was sold immediately. Throw in some magic, shifters, and all the other wonderful creatures that we have grown to know and love throughout the Lost Legacies series, and I am in heaven.

🎧 NetGalley Audiobook Review

A Shift in Fortune (Lost Legacies 3) by Maddox Grey
Narrated by Krys Janae

This third book in the Lost Legacies series sees a change of main character and point of view. Bryn was reborn as a valkyrie after her tragic death, and as she learned to adapt to this new way of life with little help, she found her way to the Lost Legacies crew - Nemain, Mikhail et al.

Continuing in a similar vein as the previous books, there is magic and plenty of banter, plus a little excitement. Krys Janae's narration brings life to Maddox Grey's characters, and I enjoyed the sapphic love interest, but I feel there could have been more oomph there; it just fell a little flat for me. Having said that, it's a good third instalment, and there's plenty to enjoy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Shift in Fortune: Lost Legacies #3

This novella is told from Bryn's (the Valkyrie) POV. This is a fast-paced shifter fantasy adventure with a focus on Bryn as she is getting used to her powers that she never knew she had until recently and also has a side of a budding sapphic romance with the oldest of Nemain's adopted shifter vampires she is caring for now.

While they meet one of Nemain's old friends who happens to be a rogue Valkyrie to hopefully get proper training to understand Bryn's powers, they run into a bit of trouble and they all work together to sort it out. Some new sassy characters are introduced and a few amusing moments with Mikhail and Nemain where they are both avoiding the fact that they are very much into each other. It seems that Mikhail is waiting for Nemain to make the first move. He's a centuries-old shifter vampire, he has all the time in the world for her to make up her mind to give in to their obvious attraction. She just needs a little push. I'm hoping that will happen in book 4 because this slow burn is killing me.

This is a short story in the Lost Legacies series that takes place after book two I have listened to the audio versions of the earlier book and enjoyed them so decided to read this one when it was offered.

Bryn’s a fae who has just come into her powers as a Valkyrie but she needs a mentor to help her control them so Nemain and her friends are trying to help her find one. She needs them to her to protect Finn, who she is bonded to, he is the son of the exiled fae king and the heir.

In the meantime, she and Nemain are glorified babysitters to the young apex vampires with some help from Elisa and the Grimalkins but Nemain wants them to obtain additional protections for the vampires and persuade an unwilling Valkyrie to mentor Bryn.

There is plenty of paranormal action, humour, and evil magic. As usual, the cliffhanger ending leaves me wanting more! An easy read for anyone that likes shifters, vampires, fae and demons.

This book follows Bryn, a character introduced in book two, A Shift in Fate. If I say too much I will spoil a reveal in the second book, but this one was a cute novella addition! Bryn is hoping to get trained in the new magic she has obtained, but the one person that can train her wants nothing to do with her. Fortunately, she happens to be developing a close friendship, and maybe more, with one of her vampire neighbors. Even though we are reading from Bryn's POV, we still get plenty of Nemain and the other characters. It's fun to see Nemain from a different point of view!

I listened to audio of this as well. I had somewhat of a hard time staying engaged and following the story because the narrator was using her "Nemain" voice, and I kept forgetting that it was Bryn's POV. It's still great and if I had read the book this wouldn't have been an issue. This story was still as fun and fast paced as the others with fun new characters!

This is the first book I have read from Author Maddox Grey and I found her very creative with her characters which will grab any reader. Her characters are well developed and vastly different from each other. This will cause the reader to pay attention on every little thing that is happening in the storyline so they don't miss something important.

This book is fast-paced and full of unusual details that make it an exciting read.

The ability to read the book and also listen to the audio book of this book was fun. I was able to refer back to the book for spelling of names and to read for comprehension when I was trying understand detailed plot twists. I enjoy the Audio books a lot because I listen to them as I work. The best of both worlds for me.

You should read this series. It will keep you on your toes.

A Shift in Fortune is a novella written from Bryn’s POV. They journey to find Nemain’s acquaintance Sigrun to help Bryn understand her Valkyrie powers. Bryn also feels immense guilt for Nemain’s sacrifices to keep them all safe.

This book opens up the world further with introducing more realms, the lore of the Valkryie, and the Vanir.

A Shift in Fortune also focuses on group dynamics as Finn and Bryn are now brought into the fold. Bryn also has a blossoming relationship with Elisa. We also get some great snippets of all the main characters we know and love!

This was a fun, quick, and entertaining read! I can’t wait to continue the journey with Nemain and company.

A Shift in fortune by Maddox Grey (Audiobook Edition)

A Shift in Fortune is a light and entertaining fantasy novel suitable for teens soon adults. Although it is part of the series, I read it without having read the other books and it was relatively easy to pick up the storyline. The story follows a young girl named Bryn who discovers that she is a Valkyrie and requires training. The best person to train her is an older Valkyrie named Sigrun and trying to find and persuade her forms a part of the adventure of the book. There is a sweet love story between for Bryn and interesting cast of supporting characters including werewolves, vampires and fae.
The narration by Kris Janae is excellent and the characters are easy to differentiate.

This is a great audiobook to curl up with on a lazy Sunday and just sit back and enjoy.

I loved this book. I've been hooked on this series and these characters from the from the first book I read with them, so it was really fun seeing everything from a different character's point of view. The author does a great job of immersing us into this new life Bryn is learning. The book is impossible to put down, so I was glad it was a quick read. That being said, it was one that sticks with me. The world-building is intriguing, and I love the characters. Their interactions and relationships are a highlight of this book and the series as a whole. If you enjoy urban fantasy, fae, and the supernatural, I highly recommend this book and this series! I can't wait for the next book.

Narrator: 5/5
Story: 4.5/5
Spice: 1 if that

I love seeing this series from another character's POV. I did read this and book 4 out of order by mistake. It was fine only a few spoilers. I love seeing this from Bryn's POV and how she views Nemain and how she's handling her life being turned upside down. Plus her seeing more of her relationship with all the other characters really rounds out the universe to me.

Ultimately, I prefer Nemain's POV but that could be because I've had four books of it versus just this one of Bryn's. I still say the story was 4.5 and rounded it up to a 5. It still had the elements of the whole gang going on an adventure. I really love this series. Please if you are debating reading it, do. It's so fantastic.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook for my honest review

I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more , I hadn’t completely realized it wasn’t the first book in the series so jumping into the third one got a bit of time to get used to and understand what was happening. When I did though I still didn’t feel very attached to the characters , I didn’t find them all that interesting. The setting was unique and interesting though, I wish it could have been described just a bit more. Some portions of the writing had mistakes as well. Editing errors possibly. So I feel like the writing took me out of the story sometimes at times. However the plot itself is fascinating and I find myself really wanting to know what’s going to happen next !

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a copy of A Shift in Fortune. I was really excited to continue this series after loving the previous books. This book is from a different POV of Bryn which I think worked well and fitted really nicely with how the previous book ended and we get to see more of Bryns powers and relationships develop. I loved that this POV gave us some development and more information about the Valkyries whilst still continuing from the previous story and keeping the characters that we have loved from the previous two books. It’s a much shorter and lighter book than previously in the series but sets up the next book and some of the threats that are going to be faced really well.

A Shift in Fortune: A Sapphic Valkyrie Fantasy Romance (Lost Legacies, #3) audible
by Maddox Grey
The next story in the series from the Valkyrie of the series. Showing the natural development of the shift in change between the worlds as things change. The development of the Valkyrie nature and its sacrificial nature creates a new point of view to the series.
The audible version has a great reader, with an accent to her presentation that shows the nature of the character. The look at the world of Lost legacies from the new character, a young valkyrie who does not know her own power. With help from Numaine she attempts to find how to use her powers to protect her bonded, and friends.
The various friends show the nature of differences and acceptance.

This was an enjoyable short novella learning more about Bryn and the valkyries history and magic. Though I enjoyed seeing some of the other characters of this series through another POV, and I enjoyed the cute romance between Bryn and Elisa but overall this just fell a little flat for me. I put this down to it being a side novella, so though it takes place after book 2 and links to the story there, it’s unrelated overall and therefore I wasn’t as invested as I was for the other books.

However, I do think this novella will come in beneficial for book 5 which is where I believe we’ll see Sigurd again. But right now we haven’t got much further information so it’s a solid 3⭐️, worth the read if reading the series but not a favourite so far.

I found this book to be a great addition to the collection and the story, and giving the Valkyrie her own book was, in my opinion the best way to do it.

Learning more about the characters' past while introducing a new character tangled into that past was both entertaining and easy to follow. Not only that, but we also got to learn more about this race and their history and magic.

Personally, I liked this book a lot because I got to learn a lot about this world without it being overwhelming or being rushed. I also loved the budding romance presented in this book and I can't wait to read more about this group of misfits

I'm a bit fan of Lost Legacies series and this book is great as others before it.
Has a lot of funny situations (always envolving Nemain and Mikail or Jinx complain about something or someone) and if you like action, you will find here too. This book are more foced in Bryn but don't lost the main story. The chemistry of characters are perfect and when maddox introduces a new character (in this case Sigur), she adapts quickly to the dynamics of the group, not getting lost in such a complex "family". Hope the next book come soon. :D.

A Different POV:
The protagonist of this story, Bryn, is an endearing and lovable character who makes me feel a strong urge to comfort and reassure her. In comparison, Nemain, the main character in the previous books, plays a more minor role this time. However, I find Nemain more captivating as a supporting character, a wild, ancient, and unpredictable cat who serves as a guardian to a Valkyrie. It was enlightening to see her and Mikhail's relationship from a different point of view. Watching the development of Bryn and Elisa's relationship was also cute and heartwarming—lastly, the cats provide crazy amounts of entertainment throughout the story.
