Blood oaths aren’t the type of debt that you can ignore. Not if you want to keep your magic or your life. When Eddie offered Nemain a blood oath years ago, she’d accepted because it’d been the only option that had allowed them both to walk away. Eddie swore to take her secrets to the grave, and Nemain promised to take him back to his home realm so he could rescue his lover. When she accepted the oath, Nemain didn’t know what Eddie was or how difficult it would be to open a gateway to his home realm. But everyone’s secrets have been blown wide-open now. Her friend is a dragon, and dragons have a complicated history with daemons. For someone who spent most of her life avoiding complicated situations, Nemain has found herself in a bunch of them lately. She’s sworn her allegiance to the Unseelie Queen, has become the guardian of multiple wanted vampires, and something dark and consuming is forming between her and a certain clever-tongued vampire assassin. But a debt is a debt, and even without the blood oath between them, Nemain always helps her friends. Even on insane rescue missions. When Pele invites herself to come along, an already dangerous task becomes even more so. Because the dragons aren’t just some ancient enemy of the daemons, they’re potentially allied with the exiled fae king as well. Because that’s just what Nemain needs in her life. More enemies.
Maddox Grey is a queer nonbinary elder millennial who still remembers vividly what it was like to be emotionally damaged by the season two finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
They write morally grey characters who fall for equally unhinged morally grey love interests. And the banter flows as fast as the action in the stories they craft.
When they’re not putting their characters through hell, Maddox is playing video games, reading smut, burying their nose in comic books, or hiding behind a pillow while they watch horror movies.

If you’re curious about what I’m reading, you can follow my “reviews” here. Personally I’m not comfortable publicly reviewing other authors books. So if I enjoyed it, it gets five stars from me, lol. My taste in books is… chaotic… but mostly some flavor of fantasy.
I love in devoured this book so fast. This book made me laugh made me cry and made me super nervous. All of the emotions I want to feel when reading a book. Maddox definitely delivered. I am so pleased about the diversity and inclusion in this book it warms my heart. Many authors who aren’t POC don’t always do diversity very well, but I can appreciate the love and time Maddox put into this book. She is now an auto buy by author for me. I cannot get enough of this series. I was lucky enough to get a arc of the upcoming novella. I will go and dive into it right now. If you have not started this series, please do.
A shift in ashes is book 4 in the lost legacies series. With the last book being in a different characters POV, I was super excited to get back to Nemain’s story!!
I will say that you can definitely feel the tension between Nemain and Mikhail in this book growing!! This series is definitely a slowww burn so get ready for all the angst 🔥
While this book has a decent amount of court politics, it is still action packed and even some 🌶️🌶️🌶️
I listened to the audiobook for this whole series and absolutely LOVE the narrator!!! She was perfectly casted! Her accents are amazing! 10/10 recommend♥️
A Shift in Ashes by Maddox Grey is book 4 of the Lost Legacies series
Nemain is a four-century old feline shapeshifter with devourer magic who is kicking butts and taking names once again in this continuation of a fast paced fantasy action adventure with a large blend of different magical beings with LGBTQIA+ representation, and a dash of romance. The world and magical beings are complex and some are a bit snarky and a touch vindictive which I love. The friendships are fiercely loyal and they love like no other. Especially when Nemain tries her hardest to ignore her pull to avoid being heartbroken with the loss of yet another person they fall in love with. Mikhail is a centuries old fae vampire who has all the time in world to wait for her but his longing is running his patience thin. She just needs a bit of a push in the right direction. 😘 This edition adds some new characters with new problems for Nemain and friends.
Side note: The vampires in this series are unlike the traditionally written ones that we are all used to. No, they do not sparkle in the sun, but some can vanish in smoke or have other interesting abilities due to being mixed with fae giving them different magical abilities.
This book is packed with so many different things with diverse representations so it's best to just list them
Morally Grey FMC/MMC Strong respected female leaders Slow Burn Romance Enemies to lovers One bed Steamy magical dancing Seely Court Nonsense Deadly Tournament DRAGON Shifters LGBTQ Rep Deaf representation Mysterious Magic Mixed Fae Daemons Fae Vampires Shapeshifters Witches/Warlocks Man eating plant Grumpy Talking "cat" Portal Magic Realm Jumping Found Family Snarky banter
*SPOILERS* Brief recap cliff notes
Nemain and her friends go on another dangerous mission but first, Nemain must do her duty to attend the Unseely Queen's First Day of Spring celebration and officially announce who her actual parents are. The only good thing was knowing that her mother would hate it as much as she does. Dressed to the nines that don't include her usual weapons and expected to take a date, Nemain's usual choices are conveniently unavailable so Mikhail is her only option. Not thrilled with the idea due to her unmistakable attraction to him, she tries to keep him away but of course, things don't always happen like you plan. Just like they were all surprised when the Queen presented Nemain to the court as the daughter of The Morrigan and The Earl King- nephew of the Queen, she also announced that Nemain has a new position as the Queen's knight. For now, it is in name only, but the future could be a problem. Due to ties to the Seely Court, Nemain's parents could not be officially announced as the Queen's knights so the Queen hasn't had one for centuries, but they unofficially filled the duties of the title.
After the show at the Spring celebration Nemain had to put on in front of the court for the Queen to send a message to all in attendance, she and Mikhail gather some information she and her band of misfits needed that is not only a mission for the Queen, but also to to help Eddie find his one true love, but the Queen wants her Knight to go there to see what the Dragon's are up to. The Queen's spies heard that she and the Seely Queen's enemy have been working with the Seraphim, Devourers, and Dragons so she wants to know exactly what they are doing. Nemain's Fire Daemon best friend Pele also wants to tag along to make peace with the Dragons to end the exile and free the Dragons and allow them to finally have the option to leave the Dragons Realm they have been trapped in by offering a peace treaty. It's been a long time since Eddie was banished from the Dragon Realm failing to find a way back and having his magic suppressed not having access to change. He is desperate to see the love of his life who happens to be a Dragon Princess and her father was the one who banished him. This is the perfect time to honor Nemain and Eddie's blood debt formed with each other.
Eddie is reunited with the love of his life Cerri and finds out that since he's been gone, her father has tried and failed to marry her off. He tries to convince her to leave with him back to the human realm but she is reluctant to leave the other Dragons to deal with her father's rule. The Dragons are having a huge meeting, celebrations, and a tournament that will include all the factions. The tournament is for male Dragons to compete and the winner will get to marry Cerri. Similar to an auction to win a prized cow. With all the Dragons in attendance, it's the perfect time for Pele to try and offer a peace treaty with them, or initiate a coop as she is transitioning to be the leader of the Daemons replacing her father who wishes to retire and finally mourn the loss of her mother without the worry of leading the Daemons in the human realm. She has been hiding and protecting all the dragons who were banished from the Dragon Realm for many years and wishes to have them all have safe passage between the realms with this treaty.
At the Dragon celebration the day before the tournament, Nemain and Mikhail needed for information to find out what Cerri's father was up to. In an unexpected heated display to hide their digging around for what she was doing in the Dragon realm, it was a convincing ploy to not let the Dragons know what they were actually doing, but it complicates Nemain's feelings to break through the wall she keeps up against Mikhail. Things got seriously dangerous when Eddie decided to put himself in the deadly tournament to win the hand of his beloved and many of the Dragons in the tournament were fighting to the death. Cerri's father was hoping that he would be taken care of once and for all without getting his own hands dirty and the satisfaction of it done in front of a large audience. This mission was more than they expected and everyone is in danger. Nemain is finally forced to admit to herself how she truly feels about Mikail when he decides to take an action that he may not ever return from in order to save her life and allow her and her friends to escape.
I received the audiobook courtesy of NetGalley, and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend this edition for lovers of fantasy, action, adventure, banter, romance, and a side of spice.
I am a devourer of books; those who know me will attest to this. I gobbled this book right up!
After a rocky start to their relationship, Nemain trains with Kalen and Badb to hone her powers. Her relationships slowly evolve with Mikhail (🌶️x100) and even Dante. This book focuses on Nemain and her merry band of misfits embarking on a dangerous journey to Eddie's home realm to fulfill her blood debt to him and her order from the Unseelie Queen. Despite their progress, danger looms ahead as Nemain and their friends rally to prepare against an imminent war with Balor and his allies. A Shift In Ashes is my favorite book so far. The world-building continues to expand as we discover new realms and characters. I love the dynamic of Nemain and her found family. Nemain is cunning and sarcastic, as always. However, she may have met her match in Mikhail. Their relationship had me giggling, crying, cursing, and gasping. I never knew what mood they would be in from one moment to the next, stabby or "STABBY." These two are going to give me a heart attack. If you're looking for a thrilling and engaging read, this is just what you need. The story is packed with non-stop action and epic quests that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters are dynamic and vibrant, each with distinct personalities and quirks that add depth to the story. The clever and witty dialogue makes for an immersive and entertaining experience. And if that's not enough, the slow-burn romance will keep you hooked.
Nemain is my girl, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. This whole series is one of my absolute favorites and the fact that it is also beautifully written is the cherry on top. With all kinds of magical creatures and found family… the story line just keeps getting better and better. If you like DRAGONS, this one is for you!!!
This part of the story explores Eddie and Nemain’s blood debt, which I absolutely love their relationship. The picture on the wall of Eddie’s office has haunted Nemain since the first time she saw it. Now the opportunity has arisen for Nemain to not only meet the Woman from the painting but help a friend. To top it all off, she is a dragon PRINCESS?? Accompanied by the usual suspects, the band sets off to rescue the love of Eddie’s life. What could go wrong? The exiled Fae King has plans of his own and has no plans of stopping until all the realms are under his rule.
I appreciated how although the main part of the story focused on Eddie, we still got to see Nemain’s relationship with Mikhail blossom and all the emotions, the highs and lows, that came with it. Fast paced, action packed, fantastical realms and the creatures that inhabit them, throw in some good risking it all for those you love… I cannot get enough of this series! Maddox Grey has created a fully immersive world that you will be entranced with and will leave you thirsting for more.
Another terrific book in the Fae, Demon, Dragon, Otherworldly Realm… Of note: This is book #4!
Nemain returns, and once again is given Impossible Tasks to carry out. Aside from being Assigned something that she in No Way wanted!
If you can see through all the blood, gore, ripping, clawing and so on … this has some beautiful, wonderful underlying moments!
Also, the fact that the Friends Stick Together through thick and thin, well…it’s just amazing!
Add in to that the sparks flying around Nemain and Mikhail…and wow, you are in for a treat!
I absolutely Did NOT like the ending, as it calls in all the bad feelings that I did not want…at the end. BUT…it also means that there IS going to be another book! So there’s that!! 😄
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!!

A Shift in Ashes is labeled as a slow burn romantic fantasy and absolutely lives up to that!
After a rocky start to their relationship, Nemain trains with Kalen and Badb to hone her powers. Her relationships are slowly evolving with Mikhail and even Dante!
This book focuses on Nemain and her motley crew embarking on a dangerous journey to Eddie’s home realm to fulfill her blood debt as well as her order from the Unseelie Queen.
Despite the progress they’ve made, danger looms ahead as Nemain and their friends rally to prepare against an imminent war with Balor and his allies.
Tropes/themes: Action-packed Banter 1 🛏️ Found family Touch her & 💀 Deadly trials Political intrigue Ballroom dance scene Slow burn 🌶️
This is my favorite installment so far. The world continues to expand as new realms and characters are introduced and I love the dynamic of Nemain and her found family. Nemain is cunning and sarcastic as always but she may have met her match in Mikhail.
This series is perfect if you’re looking for an action-packed story with epic quests, colorful characters, top tier banter, and a slow burn romance!
**I received a free e-ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Thank you to Maddox Grey for the opportunity!**
SO MANY DRAGONS!!!!! Y'all, I really love this series! It's such a fast paced with lots of action and tons of magical folk! I love how many types of mythical beings and creatures are in this series. The world building is awesome and I love all of the characters! I can't say too much without giving things away since this is the 4th book in the series, but there is a slow burn romance that has been simmering for the last few books that may FINALLY come to a boil! My only gripe about this book is that there isn't more Jinx 😂
I've gotten used to the narration style since this is book 4, so the occasionally "Siri" voice doesn't bother me as much. At any rate, she does great with the characters so it doesn't really matter.
I hope you add this to your TBR if you haven't already, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! Book 6 comes out on August 13, so I'm getting started on book 5 now!
This series is for you if you love ✨️A badass, feline shifter FMC ✨️Lots of fun and sexy side characters ✨️Tons of action and suspense ✨️Unique magical abilities ✨️Found family ✨️Slow burn romance ✨️Banter ✨️Awesome feline companion that can ruin your day with bad luck if you piss him off 🤣
It’s incredibly easy to become so engrossed in this book. Granted you do have to give it your absolute attention because of the plethora of characters. However, it is definitely worth it for the relationship dynamics and banter.
The slow burn is SPOT ON! The emotional weight and sexual tension between Nemain and Mikhail was intense and delicious, and everything I needed in a book that is full of fast paced action.
The action really is a key part of this book, but that made me enjoy it even more with the tournament and heist vibes.
One of the main things that I love so much about this series is the huge amount of fantasy creatures present. With Nemain being able to travel between realms this is expected, but come on, there’s vampires, shifters, daemons, dragons, and even characters paying homage to the Greek Gods. See now this may seem like a lot, but all of the realms, characters, and their magical heritage works together seamlessly.
I received an arc copy of this book and can confirm that this is my honest review.
In reading this series, I’ve completely fallen in love with this world and become obsessed with these characters - every book has been amazing, and “A Shift in Ashes” was no exception!
Eddie finally called in his favor from Nemain, but at this point, I think she would’ve helped him even without it. The found family trope is strong in this series, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Eddie, Nemain, Magos, Mikhail, and Pele all end up in the dragon realm to try to form an alliance between dragons and daemons as well as reuniting Eddie with the love of his life.
A variety of new characters were introduced in this one, and for the most part, I enjoyed learning about them! I loved Cerri especially because she was strong, confident, and sassy - all personality traits that I admire.
I also was so pleased with how Mikhail and Nemain’s relationship develops over the course of this book - certain scenes had me giggling like a little girl, whereas others made me want to cry. This was definitely a 5 star read for me!
Narrator: Krys Janae does a good job but the male voice interpretations paused the flow for me as my mind kept saying doesn't sound male enough. After a while the reader will get past this feeling and really enjoy the story.
The Book:
Great plot and storyline progress with very interesting characters. There is a lot going on in this storyline and at times I had to refer back to my notes to make sure I understood the different characters and their relationship to each other. This didn't hinder my enjoyment of the audio book but I think for me I would love to read the book as well to make sure I have the correct spelling of the character names as well as listen to the audio. Actually I think I need a chart of characters from all her books.
Author Maddox Grey has a very creative mind when developing the characters for this book and I look forward to her next book.
I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This has been my favourite of the series so far. We’re back to Nemain’s POV which means we are on another “mission” but this time it’s for Eddie. We find ourselves in the dragon realm with trials, secrets and slow burn.
I preferred this book as I do find the amount of different characters and lore a bit much, but being in just the dragon realm for almost the entirety of the book reduced the amount of detail. With the previous books it’s still an easy and quick read, and it featured some good old tropes us fantasy readers love like one bed.
Overall I gave this book 3.75⭐️ which I’ve rounded up. Though it’s been my favourite so far it is feeling like this series isn’t going to get to the big finale soon and I’m not the biggest fan of overly long series.
I received a free copy of this book in return for a review. With thanks to NetGalley, the author and Victory Editing for this ARC.
We finally get to go to the Dragon's realm. Yay, but wait, it's not what I expected it to be at all.
First of all, I expected the dragons to be super hostile, but some of them are actually okay. Second of all, the plot thickens, and the corruption is spread so much more than Nemain believed at first.
I liked learning more about the world, the dragons and their history, and I really enjoy how the author is introducing new facts about this very extensive world using each volume for one main world, but the plot is also moving along and it doesn't feel like a waste of time reading about this new realm.
The romance was also really exciting and I can say I called it from the start. I'm happy to see them accept their feelings and start developing the relationship.
I think this was my favorite volume so far, with a strong 4.5 stars/5
Disclaimer: I received a free e-book in exchange for my honest opinion
That is how you end a book!! 👏👏👏 One of my favorites of the series so far!
What I loved - I loved being back in Nemain’s head. Her thought process, inner dialogue, and overall awesomeness are my favorites. Plus, her ability to self-reflect (even if it’s hesitantly at first) just proves that you can always grow no matter how old you are - The best found family - Enemies to lovers (or as a good friend lovingly calls them, idiots to lovers 🥰) - DRAGONS - More action and scenes with our favorite side characters (and some new ones!) - That epilogue 🫢
Side note: For those who read and enjoyed Throne of Glass, do you remember how great it was to have a really long series with characters you love and events that keep you on the edge of your seat? I was afraid I’d never find another series like that again, but here we are 😍.
I absolutely loved "A Shift in Ashes" The dragons brought an extra layer of excitement and danger to the story, making it a thrilling ride from start to finish. The plot seems simple—rescue the princess—but when the princess turns out to be a dragon in a realm full of angry dragons, things get complicated fast. The stakes feel high with an exiled fae king plotting, and the characters, especially the strong and witty protagonist, make it even more engaging. The combination of action, dragons, and twists kept me hooked throughout!
Krys Janae’s narration was phenomenal and brought the story to life in such a captivating way. Her ability to differentiate characters and deliver emotions made the entire experience even more immersive. Her voice truly added depth to the action-packed plot, making the story all the more exciting and memorable.
I was one of the privileged to receive this book as an Arc and I can’t truly describe how much I loved this book ! Hands down my favorite of this series so far ! The banter the action the continuation of this amazing story line was just chefs kiss ! Fast paced action packed deft would recommend reading this book in order and also the novella in between so you know all the characters involved so you can enjoy these stories that much more and love where nemain came from and why and how she is the way she is !! And mikhail omg swoon the banter and friction so hot 🥵!! 100% would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys action , adventure, fantasy Lgbtq 🏳️🌈 characters, and just a damn good read to get lost in !
If you are looking for a series that has Fae, Vampires, Werewolves, Demons, Dragons, Valkyries, Seraphim, Gods in hiding, Necromancers, Shifters... and more and more... Enemies to lovers, found family, friendships that would end a world to find you... this series is it.
I found this series because of the audiobook narrator, Krys Janae, her narrating between characters, male and female, accents... and there are many in this series all flow together seamlessly. Which makes this series inhalable.
The plot twists and mild spice, its all worth the read, its even better to listen to. Trying to keep a straight face and the giggles during scenes of snark are a little difficult especially at work, thankfully my office mates know that a headphone in means I have a book playing
Book 3 in the Lost Legacies series finds Nemain thrust into a dangerous mission to fulfill a blood-oath and rescue Eddies lost love from the Dragon Realm accompanied by Pele who has her own agenda.
Add in some political shenanigans with the Unseelie Queen, a bit of meddling from Nemain's parents and the ongoing attraction between our Shapeshifter and her Vampire friend all lead to an action packed, drama filled story that is impossible to put down.
Despite the character roster growing to a series high, Maddox Grey's writing allows the reader to separate and compartmentalize the individual friends and foes to create an engaging story
A Shift in Ashes: A Slow Burn Romantic Fantasy (Lost Legacies, #4) by Maddox Grey Heading into a complicated RPG adventure our main characters find there is more to the plans of the enemy transfer multiple worlds. The Fae and the demons battles and conflict are instigated over history, yet this pit them against more than one species. They banished the Fae prince, the demons, the de-vowers, and the seraphim locked each in their own realms. The core group of friends have to not only find the plot, but investigate why and how things have changed. They are facing their greatest danger, and finding their love is the motivation to work through it all.
Much thanks to Maddox Grey and NetGalley for allowing me to listen to a free eaudio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
To this point in the series, this installment is the best. The volume of secondary characters makes my eye twitch, and I still don't feel the narrator, Krys Janae, is well suited to this material; it actually really bothers me that her narration style does not at all match Nemain in character or attitude. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book most. Dragons, star-crossed lovers, action, dazzling displays of power, character arcs, humor, plot twists, good writing---what more could a reader ask for?
Once again, the found family element shines brightly n this book, as Nemain and her merry misfits venture to a new realm in order to reunite Eddie with his true love.
There were so many laugh out loud moments in this one that ran along side some nail biting adventure, offering the levity we know and love from this ever snarky crew. I loved the introduction of new characters who seemed to fit in nicely with everyone.
And of course, the star event was the tension between Nemain and Mikhail. I knew it would be explosive once they finally gave in and I cannot wait to see what comes next for these two.
Here we are at book three and Nemain is fulfilling her blood oath to Eddie, to help him save his true love. Eddie’s home realm is dangerous and exciting and is full of dragons and per usual all is not as it seems. It’s a fast paced and action packed read that helps you find yourself drawn back into an amazing world and back with our fabulous characters as their journeys continue. It’s a fantastic fantasy read and a fantastic addition to this incredible series as they try to find out what the evil fae king is up to.
Holy cow, this book was amazing. The last few chapters really had me tense with what might happen! I feel like this book got more intense to the other books in this series. But now I seriously can’t wait to read the next book so much happened in this book especially at the end. I absolutely loved reading it. I would very highly recommend this series/book. It will take you on a very unique adventure and you will meet so many amazing characters. And then there’s never a dull moment with them. Very highly recommend!
Maddox Grey surprisingly has managed to claw my interest back after a thorough disappointment in book 3.
This book is fantastic, the plot, the pacing, the tension was delicious.
Nemain and Mikhail finally got together after the will they, won't they that had been a theme throughout the series, I personally feel it was dragged out a little too much but when it happened I'd be lying if I didn't shout "YES!" At the top of my voice.
I was prepared to DNF the series after Bryn's novella which I very rarely do but this book has fully restored my faith in the series and Maddox as an author.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Narrator: 5/5 Story: 5/5 Spice: 2 (Spice is totally subjective)
The twist in the Epilogue! I will not give spoilers but the group of friends that Nemain has is ever growing and even more wonderful in each book. Seriously, this series is my favorite I've read in a long time. It is hard to step away from the books. Their dedication to each other makes the characters all ones you want to be friends with and you really don't want anything bad to happen to all of them. This book will make you squeal in delight and potentially yell if you're that kind of reader. Please read this series. It is amazing.
The fourth book in the series is just as engaging and action-packed as the rest! In this installment, Nemain and her friends journey to the Dragon realm to fulfill her blood debt to Eddie to find his love. She also is there under order of the Unseelie queen. The slow burn romance between Neiman and Mikhail continues.
I absolutely love this series! With each new installment, we are introduced to new realms and characters. The author seemlessly brings them together and weaves the story full of action vampires, shifters, demons, dragons, and Fae. I can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a copy of A Shift in Ashes. I absolutely love this series and I will always continue with it. The plot is excellent, with great witty and funny remarks made by characters. The characters and world building balanced through different realms and supernatural beings is amazing and breaks down a complex idea into something highly enjoyable and readable. I 1000% recommend this series.
3 ⭐ It was a quick and funny read - well I listened to the audiobook so funny audio? 😁 The slow burn was great and the FMC while sometimes irritating was entertaining so that's a plus Great representation of POC and LGBTQIA+!
The narrator was absolutely brilliant and I will definitely pay closer attention to her 5/5 ⭐
I got the audio arc thanks to the NetGalley which I am so grateful for! #AShiftinAshes #NetGalley
There were so many moments in this book where I was screaming! The build up to Nemain and Mikhail has been so good and it really paid off in this book. And we finally get to meet Eddie’s love and a bunch of other dragons! And I love the relationship between Pele and Nemain, glad we got to see more that in this one. The cast of characters in this series is so freaking good!
