The Endurable Alex Tilley: The authorized biography of the man beneath the world-famous hat

Rate this book
It wasn’t always easy. Hindered by a brain injury and learning disability, Alex struggled in school and was fired from several jobs. His first business venture was a spectacular failure but when he later returned to entrepreneurship in desperation, Alex enjoyed moderate success in art rentals.

It wasn’t until Alex was in his forties that his fruitless search for the ideal sailing hat inspired his own invention, the now-famous Tilley Hat. His hobby went haywire when others wanted one too. He kept creating new clothing and Hats and never looked back.

Success was mired with challenges: a costly failed expansion that threatened bankruptcy, a protracted lawsuit with a business partner, and a few ups and downs with four wives. He found his market as travellers, adventurers, the Canadian and American armed forces, Sir Edmund Hillary, and even royalty embraced his products, which he often referred to as his “children.”

The Endurable Alex Tilley is an in-depth biography about the man and his business—so intertwined that a court of law deemed they could not be separated.

“The Endurable Alex Tilley” by Nancy E. Beal is an unputdownable tell-all about Alex Tilley and his dream of making the perfect sailing hat. This extraordinary biography compiled of years of research delves deep into Tilley’s successes and failures, beautifully capturing his determination to create a hat that would endure almost everything while remaining stylish enough for people to want to wear it.

When readers pick up this novel and embark on Tilley’s journey to creating the hat, they will resonate deeply with Tilley’s struggles through school, landing in multiple jobs that didn’t work out, and the obstacles he had to overcome throughout the years of running his hat business. Tilley’s story serves as a good reminder that nothing worth having or wanting comes easy and that if it’s something we truly wish to do, we must persevere and keep going. His story is more than just the hat and its symbolism, it’s also about the ups and downs of life and business.

Readers will gain insight into the man under the hat as Beal perfectly captures Tilley’s humour, values, and sense of adventure in her writing. Beal’s passion for genuinely depicting his experiences and reactions to decisions he’s made (the good and the bad) makes it easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of Tilley’s life and devour the book in one sitting.

Anyone interested in the Tilley hat, the man behind the hat, and the process of trying to create a successful business will need to read this book. This biography will easily capture hearts and laughter through the incredible years of Tilley’s life. It’s witty and full of humour, but it’s also about a brilliant man who’s gone on many adventures, the proudest one being his endurable Tilley hat.

This book is easy to read with stories of Mr Tilley's early life, his challenges with schooling and being an employee...and his evolving journey of being an entrepreneur. Written with much research, it is a credible account that gives us a glimpse into the life of the Man with the Hat and his successes, challenges and advice for any budding entrepreneurs ! Loved how the author organized the stories making it easy to pick up & down to read on the go or to read to others. My Father-in-law's favourite story I would read to him was the 'The Hat that fights' about the response to the order from the Canadian Department of National Defence for 1,000 hats to protect of members of the Navy heading to participate in Operation Desert Storm in the Gulf War. This book has something for everyone. And includes lots of pictures!

What a wonderful story! What a fascinating man! I gobbled up the life of Alex Tilley in three days! So many lessons for those of us who have a dream ... whatever that dream might be! The author presents the man as a true human being. Like us all he has his faults ... he made mistakes ... but his passion and resolve carried him through to a highly satisfying, pride-filled finish line. I loved the way the author structured the narrative and included many of Tilley's own insightful remarks on his turbulent journey. Her own sense of humour shines through it all. Bravo! Well done! The Endurable Alex Tilley is definitely "one for the books!"

Almost everyone is familiar with Tilley Endurables, especially the Tilley Hat, but this book opens the door wide and delves into the heart of the man behind the famous clothing line, Alex Tilley. Just a regular guy with lots of struggles throughout his life, Tilley finally hits it big with his most successful venture. In an interesting format and with no shortage of humour, Nancy Beal walks us through Alex’s life, lived on his own terms, highlighting not only his successes, but also his shortcomings and failures. A well-researched and beautifully written account of the life of one very interesting man.

Dig that Tilley Hat out of the cottage closet and read about where it came from. In-depth. Well researched. Good.
