If you like Bernard Cornwell, David Gemmell, John Gwynne and Conn Iggulden you will love this Viking adventure packed with battles, betrayal, axes and swords.

881 AD, Northumbria. Hundr, The Man with the Dogs Name, sails the England’s coastline raiding and challenging Viking champions to single combat. His wife and child died in a savage war with Rollo the Betrayer and Hundr seeks to soothe his grief in the fog of war.

Hundr , a Northman with a dog's name… ruthless Viking warlords and savage individual combat… epic battles, gladiatorial fights, twists and turns.

Hundr is lost in a violent sea storm and falls foul of fellow Vikings who force men to fight in the hjaldr-garth slave fighting pit. Einar the Brawler searches for his lost friend and must scour the Danelaw for news of a one-eyed warrior. Hundr is faced with a battle to survive and escape the fighting pit, whilst Einar faces off against a brutal enemy. This fight will push Hundr and Einar to the limits of their warrior-skill and endurance.

Can Hundr survive brutal betrayal and vicious gladiatorial battles in this fast paced Viking adventure with striking characters and bloodthirsty action?

quite gripping

Such good characters! What a set up with the pit and a satisfying ending. The new characters will be something in the next book! Quite an excellent series so far.

Great series

Another great book in a great series and I’ve loved reading every single one. The plots vary each time, but all are well-researched and brilliantly written. I can’t wait for book nine now!

stop using thought cage…..smh

The continued use of thought cage when referring to the characters mind was a clever spin in the early books. However, it didn’t take long to grow weary of the two word approach. It’s like you’ve come across a couple of clever words that you push in to almost every page. I remember in your earlier books reading “ thought cage” over and over and growing weary of it, and then to find it mentioned at least 35 times in this book. Unbelievable

I honestly thought the last book in this series was end of Hundr saga, but yet Peter Gibbons astonishly added another story after the death of Rollo. This book reminded me of Spartacus or even 300 the movie. I would never dream of a viking jarl being reduced to a slave and fighting in roman-like pit forced to fight other slaves. This book was awesome I really hope Mr. Gibbons gives another book, possibly drama after Hundr tries to collect his son.

Fast and furious!

Yet another compelling read from a master storyteller. His fascinating mix of well developed characters combined with a great adventure makes this book one of the best in the series. If you like historical novels about Vikings, I highly recommend this author and the Viking Blood series.

Lots of build up and then a very quick ending. Clearly more planned but a little frustrating after reading so much about Hundr’s suffering to more or less glaze over the escape and the battle at the end.

Brilliant

Peter writes a great series. Book 8 makes me want to see more of the tails of Viking Blood and Blade Saga.
I place Peter in the same category as Bernard Cornwell
Truly a great story teller

Always exciting to

Absolutely love these stories of Hundr and Einar. They still show no signs of slowing down even though 15 summers have passed since they met. I really enjoy these books, can't wait for the next installment.

I do hope this is the last book in the series, as much as I have enjoyed the rest. I think the story of the Man with the Dog's Name has run its course. I haven't given up on Peter Gibbons but I'll be on the watch for other characters and adventures.

great books

The only problem I see is that the amount of punishment the protagonists take and survive is unbelievable.

Fun to see the bad, guys get theirs although they are all bad guys aren’t they!

Entertaining and the battle scenes are believeable.

all around

EXCELLENT!!
poor Hundr is all I’ll say. Well ok I’ll do more since I have to… really-do I know one man, woman or child that could handle the amount of pain and pressure the people back in those days did? and the answer would be probably not!!

Not excited…

Not excited that this saga is nearing the end for me. I almost don’t want to read Book 9, because I don’t want Einar, Ragnhild, Hilda, or Armundr to die. Great, epic series. There will be twists, but I know of several lingering enemies that must be confronted.

Not for the faint of heart

Peter knows how to write a battle scene. He also clearly described the “pit” so well I could see it in my minds eye. Well done!
