Let's call this one 3.5 stars, shall we? Better than many books I've rated 3, but not quite a 4.

This is the penultimate book in my 2020 Book-of-the-Month reading list, the November choice. Chosen for a frivolous reason, it was a surprisingly entertaining read. Mira is a relatable main character, a young woman looking to change her life by moving to a small town in Minnesota. I'm missing some of her background, having joined in here at book number seven. But I didn't feel that I was missing any crucial information.

One of my favourite side characters is Mrs. Berns, the blunt spoken senior who seems to be Mira's BFF in Battle Lake. Unfortunately, she leaves the Minnesotan winter for Arizona for the majority of the book. She provides a good foil for Mira, who shouldn't really fit into the small community. Mira is from a big city, has given up alcohol, and doesn't eat red meat, just a few of the ways she stands out from the general population. With Mrs. Berns to “sponsor" her, she's fitting in well enough to have a job at the library and a regular column in the newspaper. She also seems to have a talent for befriending seniors and other folks who don't immediately fit in. There's also an amusing subplot concerning her hot new boyfriend--she's just been through a bad break-up and is determined not to sleep with him for 6 months.

So it's kind of a typical cozy, although those usually involve a local girl who's come back home from the big city after a break-up. The real hook is that Mira is working on getting her PI license, which is what draws her into the conflict that begins this novel.

So I find myself strangely wishing that I had started with book one, although I'm not likely to go back to it at this point. But I might be convinced to go on to the December adventure.

November Hunt is my first Jess Lourey book.

Quick recap, Tom Kicker is shot by his best friend, Clive. Tom's daughter hires Mira to investigate because she believes there is more to her father's death than a hunting accident. And, being a mystery, of course there is more.

I love quirky fun reads. I love a mystery and I love a laugh, so this seemed right up my alley.

SPOILER DISCLAIMER: I don't think I really spoil anything, but I point out a few scenes and some lines.

What I Liked:
The quirky characters - I like Peggy, Julius Metzer, Jed, Mira. I think they all add fun elements.

Snazzy comments, even if they were just thoughts - like when Mira is describing a huge furnace, "My first thougth was that the witch in Hansel and Gretel would have loved it." Love that line.

And, Chuck, I want a Chuck. I want him to think "I should double-check his belly to make sure I hadn't missed a spot."

Small town lore. I grew up in a small town in Montana, and we all have thoughts about the people who are distant - emotionally. For instance, the theory that Clive murdered his wife and children and fed them to the pigs, yeah, total small town. And I loved it.

Some truthful elements: Such as Hallie not being able to hear her father's response to Clive when they argued. Let's be honest, we just don't always get the full fight. LOVED, that Jess added this tidbit. And that she didn't use the typical, something loud obscured his words. I repeat: I really, loved this, such a small element that lends big impact of credibility.

Even the story line worked for me.

What I didn't like:

The political aspect. Maybe this is brought up in one of the prior books in this series, but to me, it read as if the author was coming through and preaching. I read to escape a lot of crud I encounter daily. Sadly, the political aspect is one that drives me nuts. I have family that are far right and some that are far left. When we gather, it's round after round of "you're brainwashed," "No, you're brainwashed." After an hour I'm banging my head on a wall in an attempt to be brain dead.

I see the series won the Lefty award, but I don't see why this has to be political.

There were many moments where I was pulled from the story. Just piddly things, but still.

Inconsistencies: Peggy's book is due in a month and a few hours later it's due in two weeks.

She tells Hallie, she's her only client. However, she had just accepted payment from Peggy so no, she's not her only client.

And the author stepping into the story:
When Mira is berating her excitement while speaking with Johnny and points out she should lose the exclamation points. No, the exclamation points are for the reader, Mira shouldn't be aware of them. She should be "I need to control my voice, if it goes up another octave I'll burst his ear drum."

Things that just don't make sense:
"I rolled my eyes, but quietly." Um, I have never heard an eye roll. I've seen them roll, but even with my good hearing, I've never heard one.

"He's getting a crown on his wisdom tooth." What dentist would do that? It's a wisdom tooth, it would cost thousands less to just yank it.

And one more peeve: The whole budgeting scene. I have no idea where the Battle Lake police department shops, but I think every police station in the nation wants that number. The department needs four Kevlar vests, four communication systems, four battery units, AND two full surveillance kits. And $3700 is going to get them all that. WOW! Either they have an in with some company or I would fear for those officers using that cheap equipment.

Now, why should I point out this piddly stuff? Because I really think Jess has a good story formula. But, I want to read one all the way through without being yanked out. Those piddly things give me a reason to go wash dishes, throw in a load of laundry, vacuum, run errands, watch TV and then, just before I fall asleep, remember, "Oh yeah, I have a book I haven't finished yet."

I like being sucked in because I can't stop turning the pages. I like debating how long I can stave off my children with snacks rather than making dinner to find out why someone is hospitalized. *NOTE: My children don't starve, I love them dearly and feed them well.

I know I started this series midway through, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment!

I liked the quirky small town setting and the murder she wrote style of story, but it wasn't afraid to gloss over the darker aspects of small town life either.

When asked to investigate an accidental shooting, town librarian Mira finds there's a lot going on in the under belly of Battle Lake and, worst of all, a big old snow storm is on its way...

Entertaining mystery listening 🎐😃

This kindle e-book novel is from my Kindle Unlimited account book seven of twelve.

Mira is asked to investigate the death of a father. She is at risk from the the four boys who raped a girl in high school. It all comes to a conclusion after the truth comes out leading to arrest.

I would recommend this series and author to readers of romantic family and friends relationships adventure mystery novels 🎄🎊 2024 👒😎

Just finished November Hunt by Jess Lourey and I’m officially charmed! This is book 7 in the Murder by Month Romcom Mysteries series, but don’t worry—I jumped in here with no problem. You can totally start the series wherever you’d like.

Set in small-town Minnesota, this one’s a nostalgic gem for us Midwesterners. It nails the cozy-but-nosy vibe of the land of 10,000 lakes.

Not quite a traditional cozy, not a dark thriller either—November Hunt lands wonderfully in-between. It’s funny (but not too sweet), romantic (without too much spice), and mysterious (but not scary). Basically, a delight.

Would recommend to:
• Fans of funny mysteries
• Anyone who loves small-town stories
• Minnesotans who want to feel seen

Thank you to the Author for the copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a monthly themed series, that started with May Day. This was the first book that I read in this series, but I do play on going back and reading the others. I felt that you could read these books as a stand alone, but I am sure that it would be better to know backstories of some of these characters.

A cold November in Battle Lake, Minnesota and Mira is still just in the beginning stages of getting her PI license, but that doesn't stop Mrs. Burns from referring Mira her first case. One of Battle Lakes beloved business owners has been shot during a hunting accident, but his daughter is convinced that it wasn't an accident. Mira agrees to look into the case and finds herself knee deep in snow, ice and a decades old scandal.

This was a cozy mystery that was so fun to read. The characters are likable and I laughed a lot reading this book.

Thank you to @Netgalley and @Brilliance Audio for the copy of November Hunt, thank you as well to @jesslourey for a great story.

Thank you so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc of this one in exchange for an honest review!

This book is in the murder mystery by month series. We follow a librarian in a small Minnesota town as she keeps finding dead bodies. This one follows the death of a man killed in a hunting accident. But was it an accident?

Mira is a fun character to follow and i really enjoy these books. She is really funny and I find myself laughing out loud sometimes. I also love that she is a librarian because I also work at a library.

We have a lot of fun characters as well to follow. The mystery kept me engaged and I was intrigued throughout. I also enjoy the quick pacing of this one.

I would definitely recommend!

Mira is back still working in the library and seriously pursuing a PI License. Not to mention, a relationship with Johnny. She’s asked to look into the killing of a man in a hunting accident. Only his daughter doesn’t think it’s an accident. I really enjoy being back in Battle Lake with Mira and the gang. Lots of laughs, mystery and a little bit of romance for Mira had me flying through the pages. Can’t wait to see what December will bring!

For readers looking for comfort food rather than an adrenalin rush, Jess Lourey's "November Hunt" goes down easy. The setting is Battle Lake, Minnesota. It's the last week of November ("cold enough to freeze the balls off a pool table"), hunting season, and a widely respected local businessman named Clive is out hunting deer with his best buddy, Tom Kicker. Clive takes aim at a white-tailed buck, pulls the trigger, and Tom falls down dead.

Tom's daughter, who overheard her father and Clive arguing before the accident, hires town librarian (she got the job when the incumbent was murdered) and part-time detective Mira James to investigate. With a brand new copy of "Private Investigating for Morons," an aging Toyota Corolla without a thermostat, and a daffy author of pithy aphorisms in the passenger sat, Mira is on the case.

Lourey has a knack for wholesome sexual innuendo, and she gets plenty of mileage out of Minnesota ("...a three- party government with a former professional wrestler at the helm isn't the laugh riot you'd think it' be..."). Her librarian/sleuth Mira James is smart and resourceful, and always on the prowl for unusual recipes like "Twinkie Sushie" for her newspaper column. This light novel keeps the reader engaged, like one of those sweet chewy Nut Goodies that Mira is addicted to.

Liked the book, but missed involvement of Mrs. Berns and the other oldsters. Also, Kennie played a minor role in the story. I do like the evolving heat between Mira and Gary. There also weren't as many recipes or laughs in the book. I still am looking forward to December :)

After a disappointing October offering, Jess Lourey returns to form with ‘November Hunt’ which opens with an intriguing premise – Clive’s accidental shooting of his hunting buddy, and employer, Tom Kicker.
I took a little break from these after October, as I had a few in a row and was starting to wane a bit on them.
But right from the off, this one feels like a return to form: from the aforementioned hunting scene to Mira’s woes when it comes to driving in winter. One of my favourite things about these novels is how Battle Lake is almost a character within them – that element was lost a little in the previous novel but is back in force here.
One thing that is not back in so much force is Mrs Berns, who is outsourced to Sedona from early on, but not before bullying Mira into looking into the shooting as a way of chalking up some hours for her PI licence. There are suspicions afoot that the shooting was not an accident, and given that Mira moved to the murder capital of the northern states, it’s a safe bet that the suspicions are right.
What follows is a solid mystery that offers us a reasonable line of suspects, unearths new twists and turns, and a few side quests along the way. In fact, some of the sidelines were almost too much – there was a particular twist, late on in the novel, that I felt could have made a good mystery of its own.
There’s the usual zaniness with Kennie, the swooning brooding with Johnny, an out-of-leftfield development with local cop Gary Wohnt, and bookending it all, some Mrs Berns to play us in and out of this instalment of the monthly murder mystery series.
The mysteries have been getting progressively darker, and in the case of one or two, a little bit out there. This one keeps its feet on the ground, so to speak. There are no speculative sciences or murderous cults – the story is very human, very local, and really feeds into the ‘secrets of a small town’ notion that so many other novels do.
I can’t help thinking that a quick phone call to Mrs Berns about three-quarters of the way through might have answered a lot of questions but I think the whole point was that Mira needed to take this one on, on her own.
As I say, a solid return to fun form and I look forward to the next one after a buffer break of one or two other, different book in between.

My thanks to Thomas & Mercer for the eARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Release: Oct 28

Details:
Local resident Tom Kicker braves the bitter cold to hunt a deer, but in the process, his best friend Clive fatally shoots him during a hunting incident. After just a few weeks of pursuing her PI license, Mira isn't entirely convinced this was an accident. Tom's daughter, Hallie, isn't either and begs Mira to look into it. Hidden secrets are uncovered while Mira investigates this mystery.

Thoughts along the way:

-first page and had to look up a definition: muzzleloader hunting -
Hunting with a muzzleloader is a unique experience that involves loading each round manually through the barrel of the firearm.
-I'm not a fan of hunting, hopefully I can get through this book without DNFing

-Battle Lake, Montana in Nov

-Tom Kicker ✝️
--was it really a freak accident?
--daughter is Hallie who thinks it wasn't an accident

-Clive and Tom fight prior to Tom's death

-Clive was drunk, but has enough experience in shooting that it shouldn't have resulted in Toms death
--sells pot
--how does he have so much money?

-monty
-I know Mira thinks he's a hero after helping with her car, but I'm suspicious

-After the first 2 or so chapters, it seems like things are slowing down. Lots of random details about things that don't pertain to the plot? Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like a slow burn.

-I love that Mira works in a library
--in the beginning stages of becoming a PI

-I want a Mrs. Berms

-the secret room better be awesome
--meh, could've been anything

-Lyle did time for Tom and Tom did time for Lyle?
--Lyle is a pedo? Or is Tom?
-Victim is Carla - Clives girlfriend
--Was Carla really pregnant?

-recipes?

-Who killed Lyle and why?

-Why is Clive in jail?
--a daughter?

-Hallies mom died birthing her
--Clara (not Carla) is her mom; Tom's first wife (did he marry his victim)? Is he Hallies real dad?

-I predicted about half of the twists, but still a decent read

LOL moments:

"it's so cold I think the rock rattling around in my boot is my big toe"

"anyone tell you that you're lazier than furniture?"

"Margaritas are like boobs, you should only have 2"

A 100 times YES!

This is what I'm talking about a good mystery, this book had me feeling all the emotions! I think this book is my favourite so far!

Let's get started with something happy. I'm so glad that Jed has found a passion for something but hopefully it will continue with Monty gone. Also the fact that Johnny and Mira are still together is remarkable!

I loved all the different characters in this book and all the ways the story could have played out. I'm a little sad that Tom's reputation was sullied when he went along with his friends in Clara's rape. I wish he would have been the guy to try and stop it but he can't come back from what he did in my eyes. Jess Lourey's books always make me feel like a guy is good and then at the end she will flip the story around, this was true with Clive. I thought Clive was bad on the outside but a decent man deep down. Maybe he was a little bit since he saved Mira but that doesn't change all the evil things he did.

I feel like we need to talk about the fact that Clara married a guy who let her get raped and then he raised her daughter. I'm sorry but no. You don't know his intentions deep down and I would never leave a child alone with him who knows the monster he could have been! From the sounds of it Tom was a good dad to her but Clara couldn't have known that. Maybe she felt differently since she thought she would be there to raise her daughter.

Also why does our girl sort of have a thing for Gary Wohnt of all people!!! But I'm kind of living for it lol

November Hunt by Jess Lourey takes place in a town called Battle Lake where tragedy has struck - a man was killed in a hunting accident where his best friend shot him. Problem is, the two men were seemingly much too experienced to have such an accident occur. Mira James, an unassuming librarian working towards her P.I licence is hired by the deceased mans daughter to subtly investigate the incident.

I haven’t picked up a Lourey book in a while and I was was quickly reminded of the instant, utter ease at which she is able to put her reader. She has this masterful way of dropping you right into a story and making you feel at home there. Battle Lake quickly became a very vivid, likeable town. I specifically love all the little additions like bar, shop and street names that give the town its unique charm - these details go a long way to make it seem and feel like a real place.

The side stories were a bit wacky for my taste (like helping an older lady find her mojo and the vitamin drama) but they didn’t take up much time and that’s about the only thing I didn’t like.

November Hunt is a great, engaging read, with a fully fleshed out storyline that unfolded nicely. I look forward to reading another cosy instalment with Mira James. Can’t go wrong with one of Lourey’s books.

Thank you Thomas and Mercer and NetGalley for my revised copy ARC.

My favorite of the series so far! If I've said this before in a previous review, I really mean it now. This story seemed to have a more serious tone than the others and didn't have as many laugh out loud moments that I have come to expect and love. This surprised me since one of the shining attributes of these novels are the laughs. I did get a little separation anxiety from the minimal appearances of Mrs. Berns and Johnny, but I still loved every minute of it. It was a really good mystery. Lourey depicted this chilling atmosphere with the snowstorms and freezing temps. It almost felt like I was isolated in Alaska or Antarctica. Very spooky! And what's the deal with Gary?! I can't wait to read the next book to find out. I really enjoyed it!

November Hunt is book 7 in the Murder by Month series. It can be read as a standalone, but why torture yourself with not knowing these characters in their full personalities? Start with book one (May) and binge! You can thank me later.

This is a cozy mystery full of quirky characters that will keep you pining for more. There were a few of them to keep track of, so be mindful of that going in. I think there are enough that every reader is going to find someone they relate to and love, which was great. I loved the diversity. The small-town vibes were also a lot of fun. I don’t live in a super small town anymore (its borderline considered one) but I did grow up in a very small one. So, getting transported back to one for this book was a lot of fun. The little idioms that are familiar with small towns can be found here and I was all for it. I found the pacing to be nice and even throughout the book and on par what I look for in a cozy mystery.

This is book 7 in the series. I think I did fine reading it as a standalone but I think that having the backstory on the main character would have really added to the overall plot of the story. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries then you should look into this series because it seems like a good one.

Thank you to the publisher Thomas & Mercer and @netgalley for this e-arc. All thoughts are my own.

This themed-by-the-month series started with May, and I had previously read May through October. I do think a person could start with any month and understand the book just fine (although it was odd that a series regular - an elderly man who lives in a care facility - was not introduced until about 80% into this book; as a fun character, he could have been brought in earlier).

This was not my favorite of the first seven books, but also was not my least favorite. I didn't relate to the hunting theme as much as the focus of some of the other books. The mystery of this book was a good one. Although I thought I had it figured out, there were a couple twists that I didn't anticipate.

Like the books preceding it, there are plenty of quirky, interesting characters and a setting that sounds like a fun place to visit. Each book has a number of recurring characters filled with personality, and a number of new ones to assist with the plot. I should add that the writing is not likely to win any awards, but is clean and clear enough that the style does not distract. I received an ARC for the audio version.

I'm already looking forward to reading the December book.

November Hunt is one of the books in Jess Lourey’s Murder-by-Month cozy mystery series. Accidental and not-quite-qualified librarian, Mira James, becomes involved in investigating an accidental death that might not have been an accident – at least according to the victim’s daughter.

I really enjoyed this book. It isn’t another lightweight cozy mystery, but rather a well-plotted, well-written, and well-developed story with a cast of interesting and somewhat off-the-wall characters. I particularly like ninety-year-old Mrs Berns, Mia’s best friend, although she isn’t present in November Hunt as much as I would have liked. But, when she’s around she says what she means and she means what she says. My kind of gal. The dialogue and humor are very well done and the story moves along at a nice pace.

It’s fun to read these books in the order they’re written, beginning with May Day. But, it isn’t totally necessary and no matter what book you start with, it will be an enjoyable read. NetGalley provided an advance reader copy.

Battle Lake local Tom Kicker braves the snow to bag a deer—only to get shot to death by his best buddy, Clive, in a hunting accident. Tragic, yes. Accident? Mira James, just a few weeks into working toward her PI license, isn’t so convinced. Neither is Tom’s daughter, who urges Mira to investigate.

Just like the previous book in the same series, I read this out of order, but still could enjoy the whole story without any issue.

I liked this even more than September Mourn! This was funny and super entertaining. Mira was cheeky, smart and so unlucky with her track record of finding murders 😁. Jennifer Jill Araya’s narration was again top notch. I chuckled out loud in places, especially during any scene involving Mira’s bestie.

The mystery was also great - it was gripping and kept me guessing. I didn’t guess the whodunnit till really close to the reveal.

Since Mira can't turn around without falling over a dead body, she has decided to become a private investigator. One thing that requires is working under another PI, a police officer, or a lawyer. In November Hunt, she gets her first real case. A man, Tom from a nearby town was killed by his best friend, Clive, in a hunting accident. Except Tom's daughter, Holly, doesn't believe it was an accident. Her lawyer hires Mira to find the truth.

The usual cast of wacky, raunchy characters help and/or antagonize Mira. This series is not family friendly. The author also has a specific agenda, and her disdain for people of faith persists even though it isn't as prevalent in this book. But she is a talented writer - her description of the bitter cold of Minnesota will make you wonder why anyone would ever live there. Her characters are flawed but loveable, with strong relationships and depth.

I received this book from NetGalley.

I just finished the first chapter and all I can say is... What?!

Sadly it's been a bit downhill from there. I'm now 34% of the way into the book and nothing much else has happened. It started with a bang, no pun intended, but since then has become rather slow going.

Now I'm 55% in and still...barely anything has happened. The book seems fairly realistic but with the start that it had, I feel like I was expecting something a bit more wow.

Is there any point to the vitamins part of the story? Because it seems ridiculous and unnecessary. Just adds to the length of the book. It's the same with the relationship with Johnny. What's the point of it? However, after reflection I believe that there are other books in this series so that's potentially why these plot fillers felt a little flat to me.

Overall the book was alright but I feel with the way that things turned out it could have developed differently.

This is the 7th book in Jess Lourey's Murder by Month cozy mystery series about Mira James, a part time reporter and librarian in Battle Lake, Minnesota. I'm really enjoying seeing how the characters' lives progress each month, as well as the murder mystery part of the stories.

This month Mira decides to take her sleuthing skills to the next level by becoming a professional PI, and her first case is to look into a hunting accident that she doesn't believe was accidental. She's still looking for unique local recipes and even mentions beavertails, which are a Canadian specialty. She's also getting closer to Johnny Leeson, and Mrs. Bern and Kennie Rogers are both up to more crazy antics. This was my favourite of the series so far, I had a few theories about what might have happened and there were a few unexpected twists.

Jennifer Jill Araya did a great job narrating the audiobook, she has the perfect voice and timing for every character and really brings the story to life.
