For Gil, getting an education at a Division I university was merely the byproduct of racing cross country at the next level. His life is thrown into chaos when he meets a girl, the irresistible and quirky Autumn. To complicate things further, Coach Wilson recruits the swift-footed Nicodemus upending the team’s speed hierarchy. Gil must find a way to stay afloat academically while balancing his running with the competing forces of romance and rivalry.
For those whoove running and competing with yourself.
For anybody who has wrestled with their own demons on a snowy Saturday morning, in April, but still went for a 16 km training run, this book is for you.
For anybody who gave up a New Year's Eve Party to run a half-marathon on New Year's Day, in the mud left over by a Chrismas monsoon, this book is for you.
For everybody who thought to give up on their dreams of becoming a runner, no matter how slow or fast, but kept on struggling through self-doubt and loathing. This book is for you.
In short, I saw myself in the struggles and victories of each of Conrad's characters on and off the running trails. We all have greatness in us, and we all have folly. Luckily enough the folly can be burned off along with soft places around the middle if we just run enough kilometers.
The characters in Running Red have stuck with me weeks after reading it, like Quenton Cassidy and Bruce Denton (IYKYK). I am looking forward to a few training runs with my new team mates in the new year.
I really enjoyed this book. I was surprised to find that it was so full of humor. I laughed a lot. I became very invested in the characters and their concerns. As a middle-aged, off and on again runner, I was thrilled to find that much of the concepts in the book applied to me and my running. I really didn't want the book to end.
Unexpectedly, I found myself thinking about the book and its characters during runs and during my daily life. This is a book that sticks with you.
This book was also written and edited very well. This made reading it even more pleasurable. Kudos!
I read the second edition paperback ISBN: 979-8-9894649-0-6.
