Rate this book
Embark on a captivating journey into a not-so-distant future where the world teeters on the edge of transformation. Meet Hope Valencia, one of the world's most accomplished PT-SOF agents for the League of Consciousness, as she embarks on a mission that defies the boundaries of time and space. Her adventure commences in the future city of Amsterdam, cloaked in an aura of uncertainty, where a cryptic task awaits her.

In this uncertain future, technology has taken an unexpected turn, controlled by powerful media conglomerates. What was meant to propel humanity's progress has become a tool of manipulation, ensnaring humanity through the technological programming of belief systems.

At the heart of this turmoil lies a profound discovery made by Hope's own father, Dr. Gabriel Valencia. He, along with Hope’s mother Ella Valencia, discovered the Trans-Dimensional Probability Threads, a groundbreaking revelation that bridges the chasm between consciousness and the physical world around us. With the invention of Quantum Thought Dynamics-AI Protocol (QTD-AI), the streams of thoughts coursing through the human mind can now be harnessed, digitally rendered, and utilized for experimentation. For the first time in history, science has the ability to digitally read people's minds, but its implications extend far beyond what the Valencia’s had anticipated. The invention of QTD-AI provides evidence of a multiverse, where every belief-based choice spawns new realities. At the heart of this discovery lies a powerful equation, B∈E+T=R, a symbol of the infinite choices available to every individual and society as a whole.

Join Hope Valencia as she embarks on a perilous journey, navigating extraordinary challenges that transcend both physical and metaphysical realities. Every step she takes defies the boundaries of our understanding, unraveling the very fabric of reality and unveiling hidden truths and untapped potentials.

As you immerse yourself in Hope's quest, consider not only the intricacies of her mission but also the profound implications it holds for your own life. Explore the intricate interplay of your beliefs, thoughts, and emotions as they weave the tapestry of the world you inhabit. What if the boundaries of your reality were far more malleable than you ever dared to imagine?

At the intersection of science and religion there exists the concept of the greater consciousness - quite possibly the best argument for the explanation of the human soul and its fate after death- and how our beliefs and experiences have the literal power to influence the course of reality along a curve of infinite possibilities aka the multiverse. In this case, the multiverse stems from the same central point of origin and spirals out into a wave of future probabilities that can shape the destiny of humanity itself. As a butterfly flapping its wings can create a hurricane on the other side of the world so too can a single misstep at a critical moment in time create a ripple effect transforming the landscape of our future from an advanced utopia of broadened human understanding to a horrific nightmare of enslavement to global techno conglomerates that control every aspect of virtual and actual reality. But within a myriad of possible futures only a singular moment of time can reroute humanity’s future onto its intended path…

That’s quite literally the world of Threads of a Needle. The opening chapters are an exciting blend of cyberpunk Mission Impossible and the Matrix that introduces the aforementioned pivotal Neo character of the story- Hope. Across multiple timelines the author lays out the vital mission where the main character has an ephemeral link to the fabric of expanded consciousness that exists behind the linear fabric of our known reality and must discover a crucial message whose failed delivery has irrevocably altered the course of humankind. The story centers on her family and their impact on this gaffed futuristic hellscape.

While originally enthralling with the spy thriller opening, the context for plot line is steeped heavily in profoundly high level metaphysical concepts and theories that exist in the fringes of our current understanding of the universe. I personally love the in depth exploration that attempts to merge our perceived reality with the power of emotional intuition often expanded from our personal beliefs. Like every cliche science fiction story before has claimed, magic is science whose underlying principles cannot yet be explained. It’s the ponderous and mind expanding enjoyment that I’ve found in works such as Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past, which is part of why I think this story will be extremely challenging for a broader audience. This is not by any means an easy read and will be borderline boring or cryptic to readers unable or unwilling to devote the time to parse over every sentence and study its implications. There is a heavy reliance on abbreviations and equations that have a devoted glossary at the back of the novel for readers who find themselves overwhelmed by their frequency. For me, it was a wonderful exercise in mindful awareness that paired well with the story that the author wanted to tell.

However, my enjoyment was somewhat halted in what amounts to the more emotional/ religious (for lack of a better word) side of the story. A large swing from the tech and physics heavy opener is a series of sequences that take place in the Inverse, what is essentially the greater consciousness that exists behind our physical perception that may easily be rendered down into the afterlife. It turned into a cliched and kitschy deep dive romp of feel gooderie that included notable historic figures that I won’t name for the sake of spoilers. I understand the intention was to give an almost scientific evaluation to the softer topics of thought, emotion, and belief in such a way that ties them to the prototypic technologies of this universe, but it was such a drastic shift in tone and writing style that it was difficult to believe this story had a singular author. It wasn’t to my taste and was such a jarring transition that I ended up skimming those chapters almost as much as I had deep dived into the other ones.

The afterword acknowledgements does make mention of the author’s use of ChatGpT AI writing to help with some of the topics and “clarifying some of the complex scientific and metaphysical aspects” of the story. This is the best explanation I have for why this at times felt like two different narrations and had me question if I truly enjoyed this author’s work or if the reliance on AI in fictional writing has a greater implication for the creative process. The ongoing discussion and controversy of AI can strongly impact an individual reader’s perception on a creative work and while I appreciate that the author disclosed this fact I feel that it is something that should be included at the beginning rather than after fact so an informed decision can be made if a reader has a strong belief about its inclusion.

Overall, I’d give this story a 3.5 for my personal enjoyment being somewhat spoiled by the softer elements of the storytelling and the above disclosure regarding the writing process.

~Thanks to the author and Netgalley for a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review~

“A ‘human thought’ is not a mere fleeting neural impulse confined to their brain. It possesses tangible essence, a life that endures infinitely from its inception.”

Somehow all at once a study of theoretical quantum mechanics and a thrilling science fiction novel examining the driving force behind human thoughts and emotions. This story posits the idea of alternate realities that are available with strong intention and the Dimensional Algebraic Reality Equation: belief–intricately connected to emotion–plus thought equals reality.

When MIT graduate Gabriel Valencia began his research on the existence of quantum consciousness and a conceptual “Conscious Agent” particle, he never imagined his ideas being purchased by a large social media company. Suddenly, his miraculous scientific discovery is twisted into a tool for addictive reality-escaping technology. His daughter, Hope, is an operative for the League of Consciousness, which is directly fighting against Gabriel’s inventions. Hope finds herself on a mission to discover her father’s true motivations through space and time, investigating the nature and manipulation of reality.
"Beliefs aren't just memories in human minds, they're living personas, etched in moments in time, as vital as the person in the present."

This book was both enthralling and honestly rather confusing. Although the science terms were well explained and thought out, I found myself lost with some of the abbreviations and needing to flip through to the definitions at the end of the book (which were very helpful!). Parts of the story felt much more like a physics textbook than others, but I found the discussions about human life, thoughts, and emotions so incredibly interesting.

I came across this book on Netgalley, where it was categorised as SciFi. The back cover promised a book that would appeal to 'curious seekers of meaning', which sounded like me. However, after reading it, I must admit that I felt incredibly stupid after trying to understand even 10% of it.
The language used by the author was quite pompous and the sentence structure was overly complex. In addition, the author made excessive use of abbreviations, which made it difficult to follow at times.
All that has stuck is the Copenhagen interpretation (quantum mechanics) & how to alter algebraic reality (I think - ), and the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam.
It seems that the author may not have taken into account the different backgrounds of his readers. Furthermore, the author acknowledges that ChatGPT played a significant role in the writing of the book, for ‘the complex scientific and metaphysical aspects of the narrative.’
And I am not going to review a ChatGPT text.
This is more of a scientific treatise, and frankly it went over my head (no knowledge of maths or physics beyond my A-levels a long time ago) - not suitable as a novel for the general reader.

I’m DNFing at 25%. The extra star was for the cover (which was likely made with an AI extension).

Readers: if you’re at all interested in what real research looks like, don’t read this book. If you’re interested in physics, don’t read this book. If you hate overused cliches, don’t read this book.

But if you’re interested in gobblygook trying to connect hard theoretical physics to random liminal spaces filled with ghosts, sure why don’t you go for it. But do know the author may have confused the hell out of ChatGPT, because it’s clear that even ChatGPT didn’t understand string theory in the book’s narrative context. It’s not pretty spaghetti, ChatGPT. Further, had ANY researcher made string theory visible they would not have a ‘limited budget’.

The whole premise is stupefying.

The storytelling was great moving at a good pace, as was the world setting. It is very well written and keeps you wanting to read on for the next zinger. You get more than you expect and it unfolds in a great way.

Stylishly written, this is an engaging read that pushes the envelope of the sci-fi thriller genre.

Action, suspense and drama all combine to make a wonderful escape.

The all out action, conspiracy, & intrigue makes this entire book so difficult to put down.

This was a fast-paced story,. We barely catch our breath between catastrophes before we are flung inside another one.

I loved how everything unfolded, I thought that part was perfectly done.
