Lucie Miller's been headhunted to join the staff of Hulbert Logistics, a respectable blue-chip firm in Telford. Great prospects, competitive salary - you don't have to be mad to work here! But wasn't she made for better things, like travelling by TARDIS through time and space? The Doctor, meanwhile, has been fired - into a confrontation with the most terrifying of enemies...

It's been many years since I've listened to the Lucie Miller run, especially Human Resources and I've forgotten so many good things about it. Ironically, when I first listened to this, I was working in HR in the NHS at the time so I found the irony to the whole HR department.
Eddie Robson writes some wonderful Dr Who stuff. Looking forward to Part 2!
Well what can I say this was over as quickly as I started it, it's not a bad story and the Cybermen don't appear until the end. Lucie has been headhunted to join the staff of Hulbert. The timelords give the doctor a time ring again. It seems to be very series writing, I rated it so low because it just didn't appeal to me and I felt rather disappointed but hopefully part two is better.
I love Paul McGann as the Doctor, and I thought this was a really interesting first part. It drew me into the plot, and had me wondering all the way through what was going on and what was the purpose of the company.
It ends on a fairly standard Doctor Who cliffhanger, but it just makes you want to read Part 2 straight away.
Honestly, I'd say that this was a better story than some of the New Doctor Who era TV episodes.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. I haven't been a fan of the Eighth Doctor/Lucie Miller stories in general, though there have been a couple of stand outs. I find Lucie to be too abrasive, on the whole. Thankfully, that part of her personality takes a back seat in Human Resources.
I think it's fun when Doctor Who takes a mundane situation(in this case, a typical office setting) and turns it on its head. The idea of an office building being a front for mercenaries is interesting. The bland cheerfulness with which most of the office workers go about their jobs is darkly funny once the listener knows the truth. Onward to Part Two!
This was intriguing and exciting with good bits of dialogue between Lucie and the Doctor and other supporting characters. Really loved that the Doctor was “working” at an office and had his own business cards (which were the exact same ones that Patrick Bateman had in American Psycho, fun reference there!). The concept is interesting as well. I have to listen to the next one and see how it all turns out. Great start!
A mind blowing multi-layered office audio drama with a perfect campy but disturbing sci-fi twist.
My lord this has to be one of my favourite listens of the season below Immortal Beloved. I liked Blood Of The Daleks but Human Resources has the ability to have its first part stand out as its own story. I was puzzled and eager to solve the mysteries of the office along with The Doctor and Lucie. Its also a good first part conclusion to a very interesting minor story arc through this season of adventures. The cliffhanger infact reminded me of the tone of the new story and it set up higher stakes for Part 2.
I'm absolutely speechless. Big Finish truly is a delight to listen too. Eddie Robson wrote Phobos beautifully and his writing is definitely at its peak here. He's really good at giving tons of multilayered depth to Paul MacGanns 8th Doctor and showing off his Doctors flaws and strengths. Its a really good structured first part finale to the first part of Lucie and The Doctors relationship. Both characters really come into their own and get to shine in their own ways. Lucie really breaks away from the typical companion role and essentially becomes his equal.
Honestly there's nothing I can critise about this audio drama it's practically perfect in everyway. My only pet peeve is that I wish we'd have even more of a foreshadow to the cliffhanger and twist. It smacked me in the face and felt like it came out of nowhere. Just a nitpick though because as I've said I loved this audio drama and it was a very mysterious and fun listen. I completely got lost in the story due to it's creativity.
There's so much I could praise about this audio drama but I'm gonna share my favourite parts.
First the performances. Every story in the 8th Doctor Adventures Range has been super well casted for me and Human Resources Part 1 is no exception. Every member of the cast grabbed Eddie Robson's script and put their whole soul into it. It generally felt like watching a TV epis ode in the show. I was puzzled about what was happening but the performances kept me pulled in. Paul MacGann absolutely knocked out of the park and was a pleasure to listen to, he definitely showed the Doctor's curious and recklessness through his performance in this one. Sheridan Smith also knocked out it out of the park and through her performance shows how much Lucie has grown and got use to The Doctor's life style. Louise Fullerton also makes a really good surrogate companion for Lucie as the actually nice Karen. Owen Brenman is also really charismatic and chilling as Jerry. Popping up in several stories throughout the series Katrina Olson absolutely kills it this time round in her best performance as The Headhunter yet.. She's a mysterious but at the same time cold and menacing person. Roy Mardsen also was great as Todd Hulbert and was really good at portraying a mysterious leader, I imagine he's even better in part 2. Barnaby Edwards, Andy Wisher and Nicholas Briggs did good too. This is definitely worth giving a listen to for the cast alone.
Secondly I have to praise the incredible pacing and mystery. I thought this story built everything up way better than Blood Of The Daleks. I was actually sat on the edge of my seat as the mystery reminded me of a dystopian Black Mirror setting. The mystery pays off really well especially towards the end and actually leaves you disturbed and suprised when you realise what's happening. I also love how we aren't too overwhelmed with what's happening and easily understand the plot if you've listened to the end of No More Lies. Things don't get resolved magically and the pieces of what the office is comes together very slowly. You think a story in a office would be boring but Eddie Robson puts his own unique sci-fi stamp on it. You'll leave listening to this part very satisfied.
Finally the themes. The villians in this part aren't who you think. This story heavily critiques capatilism and shows how easy it is to fall in to the line of doing work without questioning any of it. It also preaches the important of making friends and having allies in such a tough business. Your brain is physiologically messed with as like The Doctor and Lucie we know something feels odd but don't know until the end. Despite the main setting seeming like a sci-fi parody of an office it does effectively show how tedious and repetitive an office job can feel. Robson approaches Capatilism in a very subtle way but impressively shows how damaging it can be. There's also a lot of anti-war themes in showing how using others to fight a war is wrong.
Overall this is a blast of a story and I definitely recommend checking it out. Its so well written that it could be considered its own separate story. Human Resources Part 1 is creative, fresh and fun. I highly recommend as it's well worth the listen.
The first season of the 8th Doctor Adventures are free on Spotify and I highly recommend checking out the audios and giving them a chance.
#langolobigfinish L'ANGOLO BIG FINISH: “HUMAN RESOURCES” (The Eighth Doctor Adventures 1.7/1.8)
Scritto da EDDIE ROBSON. Con PAUL McGANN, SHERIDAN SMITH, ROY MARSDEN, OWEN BRENMAN, NICKOLAS GRACE as Straxus e NICHOLAS BRIGGS as The Cybermen.
Now this is more like it! The mysterious headhunter caught up with Lucie in the last episode, and kidnapped her. Now Lucie finds herself working in an office in Telford with no memory of how she got there. The data she is inputting has far more significance than she realises. The Time Lords send the Doctor to get her back....
I loved this one from start to finish. The production values are top notch and as ever the voice cast do an amazing job - Roy Marsden voices the 'evil?' mastermind here and is really convincing. The story is tight and well plotted and the pace on this is excellent with mysteries being unfolded slowly to keep you guessing right to the last. The fusion of hard sci-fi (alien battles) and real world mundane (office satire) works especially well and reminded me a little of things like Ender's Game and Wargames. McGann is great as the Doctor in this one and there are lots of shades of grey - by the end your heart is in your mouth as you realise just what the Doctor has done...
Great story and integral to the series arc, good character development, excellent production values and it is very 'Who-y' bringing in Cybermen at the end. At the top end of Dr. Who spin-off fiction. Highly recommended.

I'd have preferred to listen to this two parter as one united story and I'm glad I started listening to the next audiobook in the series before I reviewed this one, because I think I would have rated it lower than it deserves. It's an excellent first part with a killer ending and sets up he next half really well.
This was just a fantastic story from start to finish. The Doctor and Lucie spend most time apart which makes sense for the story but I always enjoy their banter, it was really good here. But I always want more.
Such a slow build-up to when the Cybermen show up for Part 2, there's interesting stuff here but this is an act one dragged out through a 50-minute story. The next part should be better since all the building blocks are there for a thrilling conclusion.

Human resources is a 8th doctor adventure with Paul McCann and Sheridan Smith as the Doctor and his companion Lucy Miller with the true enemy revealed at end
The sci-fi spin on corporate office life here is fantastic, one of the better premises I've ever seen for a Doctor Who story. Good execution too, very funny.
A great start to this two-part finale, wrapping together all the overarching plot threads from throughout the series. The villain is both strikingly obvious yet a pleasant surprise at the same time.
