I spent $2.99 for instasmut, and all I got was a rage-DNF.

I am really sorry to my friends who liked this book, but it literally hit a hard personal limit for me. CW for discussion of intimate partner violence.

Book opens with FMC's boyfriend of six months groping her against her will. (Nothing graphic described, but IRL it would qualify as sexual assault.) He says if she doesn't put out, it's over:

Straightening my shoulders, I refuse to back down or go against my values. “I guess we’re done then.” Rage enters his eyes lightning-fast, and before I know it, my cheek explodes with pain, and the taste of blood coats my tongue.

His hand rises again
, and I react. Lifting my leg, I knee him in the groin and take off for the door and out into the street as he shouts my name.

Galen the MMC (and Marcus’ brother, unbeknownst to her) finds her in the rain crying:

“How about the asshole smacking you around?” My hand flies to my cheek to cover the mark from Marcus’ hand. “Yeah, baby doll, I noticed that.”

He doesn't even need to ask "who did this to you", because he KNOWS. Fuck. Yeah. Marcus is in for a world of pain. Right? Right?? 🥴

The next day Galen visits Marcus:

“If you want a whore, Marky, go downtown. There’s plenty. Back the fuck off this girl, and get over yourself.” One more cross word about my Piper, and I’ll break his fucking nose.

“I don’t want the diseases.” He scowls at me, waving a hand in the air like he’s swatting those same diseases away.

“I’m getting married tonight,” I finally reveal. “Small ceremony at my place. If you’re coming, sober the fuck up because I won’t tolerate you fucking shit up with my bride. We clear?”

Yup. He INVITES him to his wedding. I expected Galen to be Gallant, not GOOFUS.

Gallant would say something like: "What kind of pencil-dick human shitstain tries to force himself on his girl, and then hits her so hard she bleeds?" while stomping his brother's testicles into paste. (This is like, Chivalry 101 in Romancelandia.)

I was so horrified by Goofus' easy-breezy attitude towards IPV I started rage-skimming, hoping to find justice.

Fast forward, Galen discovers Marcus is now stalking and scaring Piper. So he gives his brother another stern talking-to. And one. measly. punch. Followed by an invitation to family dinner, and this olive branch:

"It’d be nice if my kids had a decent uncle. Don’t make me regret letting you live."

No restraining order, no jail time, no therapy, no penile electro-shock therapy. But no worries!

⏩ Epilogue, 3 years later. Marcus is holding Piper's hand while she gives birth.

It took Galen and me a long time to forgive Marcus—Galen longer so than me. But eventually, we came to peace with things, and Marcus has been nothing but supportive of our marriage. He’s been a wonderful uncle, as well.

🤢🙅‍♀️ I might have really liked this book, if the author had made Marcus just a garden-variety prick, not an irredeemable, violent abuser. But she did—so fuck this book, I'm out.

Safety info:

No OWD: The H has been celibate and has stalked the h since meeting her.

It was weird reading the MMC referring to himself as Daddy when he's talking to her. Like "Daddy could never do that. Or daddy will make you happy"

But hey, it's an erotic novella that took my mind of my shitty morning!

DNF THE SHIT OUT OF THIS ONE

Horrible

I'm sorry. I love KL Donna but this book was a horrible ridiculous book. I'm all for over the top men but please....this book was just awful. I feel like I should get my money back and will definitely be weary of buying another one of her book, that's how bad this book was. I hate to add that this book will be deleted from my kindle and that it's in the top five of the worst books that I've ever read. Run from this book. Shirley

That was just awful. When you struggle to get through a 95 page novella… ugh. Not even going to attempt the 2nd one

Super short sweet book about a college woman and her stalker turned lover. Good storyline and plot and good spicy scenes. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I'm not a fan of the call me daddy kink lol. Still would 100% recommend!

This was ridiculous and unhinged in the best way.

2 issues with this novella:

-Why did Galen beat up Marcus for stalking Piper but not for hitting her?

-His name. His parents are David and Amy, and his brother is Marcus....then you have Galen. It doesn't fit. If this is the name the author wanted, then his family members' names should match a little better.

I finished this book feeling very conflicted.

On one hand, the plot itself was engaging. The pacing worked, I stayed invested, and there were elements of the story that genuinely kept me reading until the end. From a purely narrative standpoint, it held my attention.

On the other hand, several scenes were a major ick for me, and not in a fun, dark-romance way.

There are repeated instances of reproductive coercion, including birth control tampering, obsessive cycle tracking, and dehumanising language (referring to the FMC as being “in heat”). There are also sexual encounters that blur or cross consent, including scenes where the FMC is asleep. These moments didn’t feel framed as intentional commentary or kink, they felt uncomfortable, invasive, and pulled me completely out of the story.

What made this worse is that there are no content warnings in the book itself. I had to go to the author’s website to find tropes, and even then, tropes are not the same as clear content warnings. Readers going in blind should be aware that this book includes themes that many would reasonably find triggering or upsetting.

I enjoy dark romance when it’s clearly consensual, transparent about its themes, and allows readers to opt in knowingly. Unfortunately, the lack of warnings combined with how these scenes were written left a sour aftertaste despite an otherwise interesting plot.

Pure smut, with a bit of stalking

This is definitely 90 percent smut, where the whole plot is based around it. Stalker, turned lover this story has obsession to the max. Super fast paced, she literally kidnapped in the second chapter. Followed up with extended epilogues this is perfect for a quick smut filled read. Don't come here if you need extensive plot.

This was too short and too instalust for me to really enjoy it, but it was still a dirty good time. Not believable in the least, but it was basically a complete story, and that counts for a lot with me.

Oh honey, let me tell you, this book was a trip, and not the good kind. Honestly, it’s like the author sat down with a list of every popular tropes on the internet and thought, “Yes, let’s throw all of these into 100 pages and call it a masterpiece.” Spoiler alert: it’s not.

Who even knows what this thing was trying to be? It’s like someone tried to make a smoothie with everything in the fridge, including pickles and ketchup, and thought it’d taste amazing. News flash: it doesn’t.

And, oh my god, the predictability. I was rolling my eyes so hard, I thought they'd get stuck at the back of my head. It’s the kind of book where you could guess the next plot twist with your eyes closed. And when the characters did something "unexpected," I was too busy wishing for the sweet release of the end to care.

Here’s the thing - being popular isn't about stuffing your book with every trend and hoping something sticks. It’s about sticking to your guns and creating something fresh. But clearly, that was too much to ask. You end up with something so all over the place that it forgets to be good.

Honestly, it was such a missed opportunity because the concept could’ve been cool, if the author had just picked a couple of tropes and stuck with them. If you're into books that read like a random buffet of whatever's trending, then maybe this will be your jam. But as for me, I’ll be over here eye-rolling, wondering what could’ve happened if they’d just chosen a path and actually followed it.

Life is too short to waste on bad smut. And unfortunately, this? Was very bad smut.

I went into this knowing it was a short, spicy novella. I wasn’t expecting deep character arcs or literary brilliance—but I was at least hoping for coherence, chemistry, and some originality. Instead, I got a chaotic grab-bag of tropes that felt like the author Googled “popular kinks in 2024,” tossed them in a blender, and slapped a clickbait title on top.

We’ve got:

Breeding kink

Daddy kink

Dubious consent

Stalker “boyfriend”

Orphan heroine with trauma

“Good girl” obedience fetish

Oh, and insta-love because… he braided her hair?

The setup had potential: Piper’s in college, fresh out of an abusive relationship, and crosses paths with her ex’s older brother—who, surprise, has already been watching her, breaking into her place, and replacing her birth control. What could’ve been an intense dom/sub redemption fantasy just turned into a smutty fever dream where zero things made sense, characters shifted personalities mid-page, and the heroine went from virgin to sex kitten in record time with no believable emotional transition.

The writing felt rushed, the sex scenes lacked heat despite trying very hard, and the entire thing came off as lazy kink exploitation rather than genuine erotic storytelling. It’s like the title was the entire pitch—and once you read it, that’s all the story had to offer.

Yes, smut is supposed to be fun, kinky, indulgent—but that doesn’t mean it should be empty. When done well, spicy novellas can be downright addictive. This one just felt like it was cheapening the whole genre I love.

Hard pass.

This book is absolutely horrible. DNF. There is basically no storyline. the entire book is just sex. They are in “love” and married within 24 hours, there is no push back from the fmc who’s basically been kidnapped, forced to do things with no push back. There are fantasy books out there with better sex scenes. This is just horribly written. Straight out of someone’s fantasy in their head and onto a page. It’s not even good sex. They just hammer each other the whole time with no intricate language or wording. by the end of the book she has like five kids because apparently she’s sexy pregnant. Which he forces her to be by the way… and she’s like 20 years old. Would not recommend. The only reason this book is selling because of the title. I like spice, but this book is a waste of time.

I was so excited to get my hands on this book; dropped everything and devoured it! This title was so spot on, there should be some kind of award given to KLD. Galen and Piper's story was absolutely decadent, like eating dessert first. Piper is so sweet, so loving and Galen sees her so clearly. A chance meeting when she flees her ex-boyfriend's house in the rain gives Galen the opportunity to make her his. Galen is so masculine in all the best ways, so magnetically attractive that Piper can't help but be mesmerized by him. The heat, the chemistry between them is so incredibly intense. This is why I adore this author, she makes the real world fade away completely! I don't want to say more, you must experience the magnificence that is this couple for yourself!
