I read the first book, Defiance Rising and immediately fell in love with this series and couldn't wait to read the second book. Amy Miles has truly impressed me again. Typically a second book doesn't live up to the first, there is always something lacking, however I couldn't be more wrong about that assessment with this series. Once again, taking the reader by surprise with so many twists and unexpected characters I fell in love and didn't want this book to end.
I'm not into spoilers, but in this second book in the series, time has passed, Bastian hasn't been seen or heard from (as far as Illyria knows) and there is serious turmoil in Illyria and Eamons relationship. Illyria knows her fate, or at least she thinks she does and gets some truly surprising information. There is so much going on in this book, I promise you won't be able to put it down.
Finally I have to say Amy reminded me how much I love this series and I can't wait to find time to read the first two books over again.
3.5 stars. Overall, I liked it. I really did, however there were a few things that dropped it down a star for me. Let's go back to the first book. Bastien leaves. I knew he was coming back in this book, and considering he is my favorite character in the series by far, I was eagerly anticipating his return. It took forever. I wanted to throw my Kindle against the wall everytime Eamon opened his mouth. I cannot stand the guy, and my dislike of him was planted in the first book. I wonder if the author intended for him to be dislikable...because it's torture reading about Illyria making out with him when in my mind it should be Bastien. So, the beginning was slow. Okay. Moving on...Bastien shows up. Yah! I was happy for awhile. Really happy. The twist that the seer threw on them was awesome, and I was filled with this great hope that maybe, just maybe Illyria and Bastien will be together finally. But no. Then another twist that I kind of expected. But it wasn't bad. I rather enjoyed seeing Illyria's jealousy, which only confirmed the feelings she still had for Bastien. When they are ambushed and taken on the ship is when things really started getting a little weird for me. It was still good, but I started to lose some interest. The descriptions of this new world were not what I was interested in at this point. We're close to the end and I'm turning pages like they're on fire because so much is going to go down soon....is the prophesy going to come true? What's going to happen to Bastien and Illyria? How in the hell are they going to get out of this mess? I wasn't concerned with the lengthy description of the world, the castle, the subjects. I ended up skimming a good part of it to get back into the action. I was excited when the king allowed Bastien to be Illyria's bodyguard. I was thinking all sorts of fun ways for them to take advantage of that...and maybe admit the feelings they still have for one another and finally be together. But no. Enter Eamon. And just like that Illyria forgets about Bastien? I'm sorry, but even if you are in love with two guys, you don't kiss one of them with the other one standing just on the other side of the door, knowing what you're doing. I think that scene killed it for me. Though she did end up saving Bastien's life in the end, and Eamon seemed to get it--that she does love Bastien in a way that she'll never love Eamon--Illyria still doesn't pick him! She doesn't run into his arms and tell him that she loves him. She just...moves on from the moment and I was left feeling disappointed. The girl needs to pick already, because I'm starting to lose interest in the love story the longer she stays in the middle of these two guys. I just hope it's Bastien, because I desperately want to see some more sweet moments between them like we had in the first book. We didn't get to see hardly any of that in the second book. Her "sweet" moments were with Eamon, but I honestly can't stand the guy enough to read anymore of those scenes. The ending...I'm curious to see how this will pan out in book 3. Again, I hope we're not forced to read through nothing but Eamon moments before Illyria comes to her senses and remembers how she feels about Bastien. I hope we have more of Bastien and Illyria together in book 3 because book 2 just didn't give me what I craved as far as their relationship went. However, I am invested into their love story enough from book 1 to continue on with the series. I have to know how it ends. And that confirms that the author has done her job at pulling me in.

At first I thought the story was slow but boy am I glad that I continued to read till the end as eventually all the action I was craving came to life and the love triangle continues. I will definitely be reading the last book in this series and I can't wait to see what happens next and what is in store for Illyria:-)
This is a review for the complete series which I read, but I don’t think the box set is available any more. I will try not give any major spoilers away for any of the books. You can tell that this series is for the YA market, the actions and situations are definitely adolescent and while I liked the characters I wanted to slap both Ilyria and Eamon several times in each novel, in fact all the triangles except for Amiah and Toren were not something made the story better, in my opinion. I understand that Illyria is young and immature and I can see her making mistakes in both errors and judgment before and after she finds out that the future rests on her shoulders, but repeatedly make the same mistakes and bad decisions does not make for an entertaining story. They have survived this long by hiding and trying to ensure that they do not let the enemy know where they are but Ilyria continually puts herself and the others, especially Eamon in danger. We know that she is one of the main providers of food for the group, without her they would probably die or be captured. It is doubtful anyone else in the group could help Eamon with the hunting and eventually they would either die or be captured.
One of the things that I really liked but also had a major problem with is the “chosen mate” aspect. It’s nice to think that everyone has a met that was created for them but the author never really explains how this works. Since births are planned on the other planet and only those that are sanctioned are allowed, do they ensure that your perfect mate is someone you would be around for your whole life? Once you reach a certain age are you told who you are suppose to be with or is it more like it was here in previous centuries, your parents tell you who you are going to marry? Also, if you were created as the perfect mate for one person there should be no doubt on either side; Eamon never considered anyone besides Ilyria but while she loved him it wasn’t the in the way that you should love someone that was supposedly designed for you. It may make for a good story but for me it ended up cheating three other characters even though the author attempts to explain how it happened but the explanation just doesn’t work because of we are also to believe that the aliens are so much more technically advanced that us but yet this types of errors can happen. Ilyria’s birth was the first mistake and then there’s a mistake with her perfect mate, it’s too contrived and too unbelievable. If you read the complete series as I did I think you will agree; the ending just wrapped this storyline up but it resolved it only resolved one thing and the way that is resolved is both disturbing and sad and Ilyria’s reaction to it is too effortless and superficial even for a novel.
2.75/5 STARS: **I want to thank the author and/or publisher for providing me with a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine.**
Well, Amy Miles did it again. She excels at creating worlds that feel real, characters that are like old friends, and epic battles that leave you breathless.
Relinquish, the sequel to Defiance Rising, takes place a year after the first book. Much has changed in Illyria’s world. Everyone now lives in the city but the threat of Draken and his army is still very real. The stakes are high and a prophecy is about to unfold. Amy immediately sucks us into a battle at the very beginning so you better strap yourselves in and prepare for a wild ride.
All the characters we loved in DR have returned, including my favorite- Bastien. There are plenty of swoon-worthy moments and of course his famous sarcastic remarks that will make you laugh out loud. Here are some of my favorites:
“‘I’m a tough guy to kill. Haven’t you figured that out by now?’ I laugh and nod. ‘You do seem to get lucky a lot.’ ‘Luck.’ He scoffs. ‘When are you going to learn that I’m just awesome?’”
And this one…
“Sweet as in brotherly affection sort of sweet or sweet as in you want to rip my clothes off and thank me for the compliment?”
And of course, the swoon-worthy moments-
“‘The only thing I ever truly wanted was for you to fight for me.’… ‘I did, every night in my dreams.’”
Sigh. I just can’t get enough of him!
This is definitely a series not to be missed. The action never stops and there are plenty of twists and turns along the way that you’ll never see coming. Amy definitely knows how to keep you on your toes! I can’t wait for the third book to come out because Relinquish ends on a cliffhanger that will leave you burning for more.
I knew I shouldn't have read the epilogue. Three stars is based on the book before that point. It is only one or two stars if I include the epilogue. At first I thought, great, now I'm going to have to read book three. Then I read the description and a few reviews for it and decided to pretend that it ended right before that fateful, maddening epilogue. Really, if you are happy enough with the conclusion up to that point, just stop. Why that character has to be stupid enough to make the same mistake twice, the only reason the series has a reason to go on at all when there was an acceptable conclusion, just baffles the mind. The other thing that really gets under my skin about this series is how everyone is making decisions for Illyria and no one consults her, solicits her opinion, or seems to think she's capable of thinking or making decisions for herself at all. Have none of them met her?
I read the first book and received this book as a prize during the author's virtual release party on Facebook (I recommend following her, she is great). I likes the first book and this one is event better. The love triangle is still there and, while Illyria is determined to do what is right based on her prophesied destiny, the connection between her and Bastien cannot be denied. Their relationship, though strained because they keep fighting it, is certainly swoon-worthy and you can't help but hope they have a happy ending. As powerful as Illyria is, she still has to struggle to be strong and do the right thing while battling not only the aliens, but her own heart and the darkness that threatens to overtake her. It's not an easy path to take and you will be right there with her throughout her journey.
This was the perfect follow up to the first book and if it were even possible I think I've fallen even more in love with Bastien then I thought possible. He's just so honourable and wanting to do anything and everything to make her happy, even letting her go which is exactly what he does at the end of this book which I was so annoyed at because they're perfect together and I am pretty sure like 100% sure that she would've picked him but no he didn't want her to hurt so he chose for her. He chose Eamon for her.

Ummmm.....okay. First off, oh my god. Second, holy shit. And thirdly, what the hell? That seriously just happened. I thought Bastien leaving was hard in the first book...well that was nothing compared to what happens in this book! So many surprises! I was gasping the entire time I read this book. I honesty can't believe the ending. It was so perfect and then bam! It got complicated and that's putting it mildly. Overall the book was as great as the first one, but if this series ends up with Bastien dead or anything besides with Illyria, I'm gonna throw a hissy
The book was a great follow up from the first book. The characters were great, can't say that their was really want growth for the character development. but it didn't bother me. There were a lot of things that happened that as the reader you just have to go along g with and accept that the answers aren't going to be given. it is only the second book, so I am looking forward to the next book.
New to me author Amy Miles brings you an interesting read with the second book of this trilogy. You will have to read book one to be able to continue into book two, as it picks up right where one left off. Amy will capture right from the beginning and keep you handing on with her creative story line.
Wow, I do not know what to really say. This book was very detailed, and amazing that I thoroughly enjoy every minute. Even the ending of the book, took my breath away that urge me to continue reading the last and final book. It is really amazing book, and the author so much detail into the work that you picture everything in your mind like you are watching the movie.
I love the story and the characters and couldn't wait for this book to come out, but I HATE the ending. I'm glad there is another book coming out because that was not a resolution I could be okay with. Fun, quick read.
Miles sure knows how to write with emotion. The book is jam packed with it and it is heart breaking in every direction. I loved bastion, his character just grabbed me from the moment. Miles does a really good job describing the characters struggles and emotions they are feeling.
I love all of Amy Miles books. They draw me in an I never want to leave. I wasn't a reader until now when my husband thought I would like her books. Boy was he wrong...I love them!
I should have known she would still be minus a backbone. I can't believe it took a whole book to end where it did, and it's not even the end! There's another book???
