The Spider-Man you know is one of many. Meet ten Spider-Heroes in this new short story collection from acclaimed, best-selling authors writing across the Spider-Verse.
There is a Spider-Verse filled with Spider-Heroes, each on their own world: Spider-Punk, as adept at the guitar as he is at fighting crime. Spider-UK, who’s juggling Eid celebrations and a super-villain threat to her London neighborhood. And Web-Weaver, whose latest fashion event is threatened by a citywide storm of hallucinations.
Some, like Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, have already crossed from one universe to the next. Others are still discovering they’re not alone. And now ten acclaimed best-selling authors, including New York Times bestselling authors Tui Sutherland, Frederick Joseph, and Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, and many more, tell the stories of these amazing Spider-Heroes—just as a mystery villain rises to threaten the entire Spider-Verse.
Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé is the instant New York Times, International bestselling, & Award-winning author of ACE OF SPADES and WHERE SLEEPING GIRLS LIE. In 2024 she was a world book day author with her title THE DOOMSDAY DATE and she also has a Marvel Spider-Verse story coming out this year where she writes a new Spider-Verse character known as Spider-UK/Zarina Zahari. Faridah is an avid tea drinker, a collector of strange mugs, and a graduate from a university in Scotland where she received a BA in English Literature. She also has an MA in Shakespeare Studies from Kings College London. When she isn’t spinning dark tales, Faridah can be found examining the deeper meanings in Disney channel original movies.
I am going to start this off with a rant. Call me old or biased, I don't care. To me Peter Parker will always be the Spider-man. I know they have tried multiple times to pass the torch to Miles (maybe they have succeeded with the younger fans), but not me. Now to have a Spider-man/Spider-verse book without Peter even in it just annoys me.
Aside from that the book is above ok, I wanted to give it 3.5 stars, some of the stories were just not enough for a round up.
Prologue staring Araña. I like Araña and think she is under used in the comic and more of the same her. This does not really count as a story as it is very short but sets the villain and thread running through all the other stories. 3 Stars.
Second-grade Super Villian staring Ghost Spider. Again I like Ghost Spider, but this story was a bit too kiddie for me. Having all the second-grade kids calling the shots was kind of dull for me. The Gwen's parts were actually very good and a good introduction to her comics. 3 stars.
La Araña Y La Arena staring Miles Morales. This is Miles only appearance in this book. The story was too simple. I understand and playing up Miles' Puerto Rican heritage, but did most of the story (atleast 20%) have to be written in Spanish? 2.5 stars.
Picture Day staring Peni Parker & SP//DR. A decent story, a bit repetitive to the point of annoyance at some point (you will know where it is), but one of the more enjoyable stories. 3.5 stars.
Tedha Ghar (Your House) staring Pavitr Prabhakar. If i am being fair this story would suffer from the samething as Miles' story. As it was showing Pavitr's Indian heritage and a huge part of the story was in Hindi. Being someone who understands the language made the story more readable for me. It might be the case for Spanish speakers in Miles' story. Though the actual story was more complex than Miles'. 3.5 stars.
Electrici-tea staring Zarina Zahari. I think this was my favourite story in the book. Maybe as a British Muslim I can relate to it a bit more. Still a very simple story, but they got the culture bit spot on. I also like there is an MJ here. 4 stars.
Immaterial staring Cooper Coen. A LGBTQ story. I think thus story does a good job of highlighting the struggles LGBTQ people go through and the paths they can take to becoming a hero or a villain. 4 stars.
Broken Punked Bridges staring Hobart "Hobie" Brown. This was one of my favourite of the book. The punk rock rebel taking it to the establishment or a punk rock traitor. However a ghost from the past has returned. 4 stars.
Speeding Through The Wild West staring Cindy Moon and Patrick O'Hara. A good story about thinking and not just reacting. A good introduction to Web Slinger for me. I already knew about Silk. 3.5 stars.
The Man In The Ragged Cape staring Kwaku Anansi. A decent story (according to mt kids) very Tinga Tinga like. Obviously very African influenced. I like other mythology stories. Can't go wrong eith a story about stories. 4 stars.
Face The Future staring Miguel O'Hara. This brings everything together. The same author as the prologue. Is Miguel the hero to save everyone or will someone else step up? 3.5 stars.
This YA collection of Spider-Man heroes short stories is a must read for kids ages 8 and up. Even as an adult Spider-Man lover, some of the stories about the various spider heroes were rather enjoyable. The other stories, through an adult lens, felt very young and not "for me." Through my kid lens, this book is "fire," as the kids say.
The only criticism I would offer is that if the reader, be they adult or student-age child, doesn't have any background knowledge of the characters from reading the comics or having seen the Spider-Verse movies, then they might be confused as to what's going on. I wish the authors provided some sort of deeper background of the different spider heroes.
Either way, I look forward to reading more from these characters in either the comics or a second volume. It would be interesting to have spin-off reads for each spider hero, perhaps even by different authors.
An anthology of ten individual stories from Marvel’s Spider-Verse. The physical book is oversized(larger than a standard hardcover). The stories are linked together by a classic Marvel villain and mysterious thefts.
A good book to read while waiting for the third installment of the animated film.
