This time, they're not Racing for the Gods – they're Racing against one.

After summoning the God of Winter to Ytopie, Viola Mistflow didn’t expect to have to flee from a megalomaniac who declared her to be the daughter of Winter. Unfortunately, Viola has learned that there are no set outcomes when the fae are involved.

Narrowly escaping the garrison with hopes of avoiding the Frostweaver’s control, Viola embarks on a journey through the Lowlands of Krillium accompanied by the only people she can trust, hoping to find a way to stop Himureal once and for all.

After his dangerous treatment of Tulip, Zeph is desperate and willing to do anything to get back in Viola’s good graces - even if it means aligning himself with the God she was so desperate to escape. Together, Zeph and Himureal enact a plan to endear Ytopie to the returned God and usher Viola into Zeph’s waiting arms.

As Viola learns more about her magic, herself, and the history of the world around her, she is forced to ask herself: what’s the difference between Gods and monsters?

The First Fall is book two in the Shadowweaver trilogy, a fantasy romance journey through the land of Krillium. It picks up where book one left off, and ends in a cliffhanger. Due to violence, sexually explicit content, and potentially triggering topics, The First Fall is recommended for adults only.

What a f*cking ride.
I love this story so incredibly much. I want to scream it from the rooftop.

These characters, they are so beautifully flawed, and I loved seeing their struggle with past and present choices and their growth throughout this story.
The dialogues that the characters have with each other felt so raw and real and emotional at times, but there were also lighter moments and banter.
There is so much love, not just romantically, but also platonic, and I appreciated the way that the author showed us the different layers and complexities of friendship and sibling bonds. Especially when there's so much on the line, and everyone has a different opinion on what is morally correct.

In my review for The Last Winter, I mentioned that I wanted to see more of the magic system, and the author definitely delivered on that. The way that it can be applied is so varied, and the author manages to surprise with a new application multiple times throughout the story.

This series has my whole heart, and I'm already pumped for the final book!

I love how this story and the characters progress in this second book of the Shadowweaver trilogy. It really pivots from the first books hunger games type challenge into a true battle to save thier world and.uncover the Gods secrets, with some humor and romance and no small amount of sadness and loss. There is depth and growth and flaws in each character that makes them feel real. The story moves forward with intention, at a good pace. It's a really well built and thought out world and story! I really enjoy how the magic system is built out and continues to grow. Himurel, the Winyer God is quite an interesting character. The slow burn romance is intense, complicated, and beautiful. The author is really good at giving each aspect of the story from multiple povs- which really helps build a cohesive storyline and helps understand the various motivations behind each person's actions. Viola is a strong lead- with some pretty serious flaws, lol. She is enjoyable to read, and I love the dimension she is created with. Mace, absolutely the same. I will be waiting for the 3rd installment of this story!! Can't wait in fact. I absolutely recommend this trilogy!

Overall - it was a much slower pace due to lots of story building which I suspect is meant to be a bridge of where #3 will take us. There were very few breadcrumbs this time around I was really hoping for more.

This book is VERY dark compared to the first, the main characters that are damaged and rightfully flawed. It was well written from this perspective. I honestly couldn't predict much that happens in the plot which is refreshing. I did love the addition of the reference guide in the beginning. A map is what we need next!

It does end on a cliffhanger and O.M.G. what a cliffhanger that was!!! Ahhh I NEED to know what happens next! I'm really looking forward to the end of this trilogy.

I said it after the first book, Holly Monroe is absolutely going to be an author to keep an eye out for. Writing is her art form and these are masterpieces for her debut trilogy.

Following the icy revelations of The Last Winter, this sequel is a masterclass in escalation and emotion that will have you riveted from start to finish.

🍂 Escalation of Epic Proportions: Gone are the days of mere racing for favor; now, it's a race against a god. Viola Mistflow finds herself labeled the daughter of Winter, catapulting her into a deadly game of divine politics and perilous magic. This sequel thrums with a sense of urgency that makes it impossible to put down.

🌌 A Journey Through Krillium: As Viola, alongside her trusted companions, navigates the Lowlands of Krillium, we're treated to a landscape lush with danger and mystery. Monroe’s world-building shines as she expands the geography and deepens our immersion into her vividly crafted world.

💔 Gods or Monsters?: Zeph, desperate to redeem himself, crafts an uneasy alliance with the very god Viola fears. This alignment blurs the lines between savior and destroyer, pushing Viola to confront a haunting question: What separates a god from a monster? The exploration of this theme adds a rich layer of philosophical depth to the high-octane adventure.

💥 Magic Amplified: If you thought the magic system in The Last Winterwas intricate, prepare for it to unfold with even greater creativity and surprise. Monroe flexes her imaginative muscles, delivering spellbinding new uses of magic that integrate seamlessly with the evolving plot.

🖤 Emotional and Ethical Complexity: This book dives deep into the emotional reservoirs of its characters, exploring themes of love, loyalty, and the moral quandaries they face. The dialogue crackles with authenticity, capturing the raw, sometimes painful evolution of its characters. It’s a narrative woven with threads of joy and despair, each adding weight and wonder to the journey.

🌟 A Cliffhanger That Claws at You: Ending on a cliffhanger that will leave you desperate for the trilogy’s conclusion, The First Fall is an exercise in how to keep readers on the edge of their seats—and loving every minute of it.

Final Verdict: 5 stars for The First Fall, a sequel that not only meets the promise of its predecessor but exceeds it in every conceivable way. If you were enthralled by The Last Winter, prepare to be obsessed with The First Fall.

Thanks for the ARC!

I was very excited to receive the ARC for the much anticipated second book in the shadowweaver series!

This book continues on from where we left off with the characters in book 1, and the author very skillfully recounts the important events in book one throughout book 2. So even if you haven’t read the first book recently, or didn’t reread it, you will be able to easily recall any events of note.

In this book we get to see a bit more from Zeph and his arc, and Humerial, although not as much as I had anticipated or hoped. Perhaps this is going to be content for book 3?! We do see a lot of Viola, Mace, Tulip, Plume, and Morrow as they travel. I enjoyed the hurdles they encounter through their travels, the beasts they conquer, and learning more about how the beasts themselves are affected by the weakening of the magic in Krillium.

We get a lot more of Mace and Viola and some great spicy scenes too. We get to see more of Viola’s ruthless nature (morally gray FMC, anyone?), and how that affects those around her. We also learn a bit more about why she is the way she is, and why Mace and Zeph are at odds.

I absolutely adore Morrow and Tulip and I hope we get to see more of them in the future!

I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait too see what happens in book 3.

This was so, so good. Viola, Mace, Tulip, Morrow and Plume are traveling back to the lowlands to try and fix everything that's wrong with the Race and the imbalance of power in their lands. As they go, they realize that Viola has some of Himureal's power, and they begin to seek out journals and artifacts to bring back the rest of the gods. Of course, nothing is ever so simple.

Zeph is working with Himureal to gain followers and devotion to increase his power, but what he doesn't know is that Viola has her own plans for power. She can't imagine ever being on good terms with Zeph again, but he has hopes that she will be his none he less. How wrong he will be...

Viola and Mace have their issues, but an electric experience whenever their intimate is only an issue when there's actual lightning happening. They do their best to work around it, but eventually they just have to give in, even though everyone knows exactly what's happening. I think Mace is the perfect match for her, and I need resolve on this cliffhanger!!!!

Another amazing instalment to this series. Once I picked up this one, I didn’t want to put it down. As with the first the plot, the world building and the characters were brilliant. I really enjoyed Vi and Mace’s relationship and the way that it seemed to blossom from what can only be described as the depths of disparity. I’m still unsure how I feel about Zeph though, he’s still a little off in my opinion. Although the scene with him and Loris did have me thawing a little towards him, as well as having me sobbing like a baby! There was a lot of action, but for some reason, and one I can’t really explain, I felt that this was a little more subdued than the first book. Not that it took anything away from the story as a whole and I was in no way bored when reading. We are left with confusion and conflicting emotions at the end and the cliffhanger…..I cannot wait to read the final book. I shall be sitting here oh so impatiently twiddling my thumbs. For a debut series I think that this author has done such an amazing job. Would definitely recommend!

You must read Book One: The Last Winter before reading this book. because The First Fall jumps right into continuing the previous book. The heroine, Viola, must find a way to stop the winter god, so she and her motley crew must go on a journey to find the power to defeat a god. Just when you think that Viola has found everything she needs, the end throws in a twist I definitely didn't see coming, and leaves you wanting the next book immediately to find out whether Viola succeeds. This book has the epic journey to find everything our crew needs to fight a god and save the world, thrown in with a little spice and romance, conflict to overcome, and situations that threaten to break apart our heroine which she must survive. Viola is a strong heroine, and while she does find romance admist the turmoil, the story is NOT about her romance, it is about the sacrifices she must make to save everyone she cares about, the world, and even those who stand in her way.

Writing reviews without spoiling anything is hard.. Here we go.

I really enjoyed watching the growth of all of the characters in book 2. I didn't think there would be any coming back for 1 of them, but he may have a chance at redemption if he continues his current path.. We shall see.

I loved how Morrow & Tulip put Mace in his place (finally) in this book too and I hope that they get their own book. I'd love to read more about Morrow!!

Honestly, I'd love to get a story on just Himureal as well or more POVs at least so we can learn more about why the other gods wanted him banished..

The ending, I felt like something was going to happen and I kind of saw it coming BUT it seems like Himureal is struggling with what he's doing, so I can't wait to dive deeper into that.

Can't wait to find out how Viola is going to get herself out of her current situation and how a certain someone is going to act once they realize what happened!

Wow! Just wow!!! That’s about as much as I can say after just finishing this book. What a roller coaster of emotions!

This book begins immediately where the last book left off. It takes you on two separate journeys: one of Viola and company on their path the collect the seeds of the other gods, and two being the journey that Zeph takes while trying to better himself to win over Viola.

This book is the definition of MORALLY GREY. Some of the actions of these characters had me questioning the direction of this book and it definitely kept me on my toes!

I really cannot wait to read book 3 and finish off this awesome trilogy!!!!!

***One of the main reasons this book only received 4 stars is because the switching back and forth between Viola and Zeph felt very disjointed for me in the beginning. If I wasn’t a completionist, I could see potential for a DNF. But once you push past that, everything comes together in the end and makes sense.

I refuse to spoil anything major but wow, this book is incredible.

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice Rating: 3/5 (I have a pretty different view on spice compared to some LOL but I would say this is definitely a spicy romance)

I love how complex the characters are and how they grow from The Last Winter to The First Fall. I appreciated the FMC being older at 28 years old instead of being 18-20 like a lot of fantasy books. Viola is not your typical FMC. She's flawed and makes some morally grey decisions which honestly makes me love her even more. The romance is amazing and will have you hollering at the page!

It's not just the romance that holds onto you but the friendship as well. Viola is not an easy person to love, nor be around but she seems to draw people in. Not to mention how fiercely protective she is of the people she loves.

If you love fantasy, Fae, slow burn romance, magic and even some familiars this series is for you.

I love this entire series and cannot wait for what the author has next!

I just finished reading "The First Fall" by Holly Monroe and it was a real roller coaster of a read! The second installment in the series really exceeded my expectations. The book introduces amazing characters, explains the magical system, and builds a vivid world that truly immerses you in the action.

The tagline "This time, they're not Racing for the Gods - they're Racing against one" really grabbed my attention. The plot has evolved from the first book and has become a phenomenal story. The characters are beautifully written with their own flaws and judgments, which adds depth to their actions in the story. Their struggles and challenges make them feel so real to us as readers, and I absolutely love it.

Another gripping story from Holly Monroe. Yes, it took me a while to get it read, but that wasn't the book's fault. Life has just been hectic. Without getting spoilery, it hits the ground running and doesn't stop (including ending on another cliffhanger). I was originally going to complain about the character of Viola, but after a couple of days of reflection, she was going through a lot so I'll give it some grace. It just seemed like she was close with her companions one minute, especially Mace, and then completely alienating them the next moment without any new contributing factors. Something about the relationship dynamics just seemed off. But she's adjusting to her new normal and what happened to her in this book, so I'm chalking it up to that. All in all, I'm really excited to read the conclusion to the trilogy in a few months. It's been a fun ride.

In book 1, I found myself really captivated by these characters and the magic system Holly built. I couldn’t put it down! Learning more and watching the progression in book 2 of the Shadoweaver Trilogy was everything I was hoping it would be!

The first few chapters did move a little slow for me, but as a whole the book has good pacing. I also really enjoy that we once again get the rotating POVs. It really helps you to better understand the characters and that’s so important when they’re so flawed and making questionable choices.

Overall a very enjoyable read and great addition to the trilogy! I’ll definitely be picking up book 3 when it’s released (especially after that cliffhanger)!.

2.5 🌟 rounded up

I enjoyed the story and the characters...

BUT - this book needs a lot of editing. A. LOT. Book 1 had 2 instances where the word "rouge" was used where "rogue" was meant. I wrote it off as a typo. However, it happened THREE times in this book. Editing should have caught that. In addition, there were instances of extraneous words, missing words, incorrect words, and at least one instance of incorrect pronouns being used because the writer confused who was speaking and who was being spoken about. Frankly, I'm surprised that none of the other reviews called out these issues.

Because of this, I feel like it is an overpriced kindle book.

I like the story enough to read book 3 to see how it ends, but I truly hope the same editing issues don't tarnish book 3.

I love how flawlessly The Last Winter and The First Fall are seamed together. There is no time jump!

Viola is a badass. She fights to get where she is and to stay alive. She also loves deeply, even though she doesn’t let it show.

The spice is a 5 and the buildup to it is just as enticing to the reader. Mace and Viola complement each other well.

The author put so much work into creating her world and it shows. Ytopie is full of magical characters that make the story come to life. Her efforts are very much appreciated by this reader!

I received an ARC copy from the author. My opinions are my own.

Second book in a series that started out very Hunger Games-esque. Not as thrilling as the first part. There is more world-building, back story, the setting is different and the tempo is slower. The flaws of the main character is a major thing that is being explored in this book. The different perspectives are for the most part fun, especially the contrast of Viola and Zeph. The character development is very strong. I just personally don’t like the love interest and don’t think they work together! Sex scenes are written somewhat awkwardly at times. 3 stars because of the tempo and unlikeable love interest.

This book was a ride in the best way. I love that the characters are grappling with situations and the inner turmoil of “I want to do the right thing” but the choices they have to make aren’t easy or free of consequences. Flawed characters and a truly morally gray FMC who can accept why she made the choices she has and the repercussions of them make the story relatable.

The magic system is also unique and the writing takes you on a journey of understanding the magic as the FMC does. It can be frustrating to want the answer and understand but going on the journey with Viola is fun and well written. I’m excited for the next book!

I absolutely loved reading The Last Winter, and was thrilled to get The First Fall ARC. Now I will be anticipating the 3rd installment!

This second book picks up right where the first left off. The settings, characters and emotions are so expertly detailed that I feel like I am living in this world as I am reading.

There is an intricate mixture of joy, sorrow, defeat, triumph and spice that keeps the reader engaged.

The ending has you sitting on the edge of your seat to see what is to come.

Congrats Holly! You’ve done it again!

The First Fall continues with the story of MFC Viola Mistflow in a second book that keeps all the threads tightly woven together of a fantasy romance that doesn’t disappoint.
The writing is splendid with imaginative world building, and characters crafted to evoke every spectrum of emotion as the magic, intrigue, suspense, and personal vulnerabilities keep the storyline energized and the reader immersed.
Set aside the time needed to become lost in the Shadowweaver trilogy.

I can’t get enough of this story! I love how all the characters flow, and their development throughout the story is fantastic. Viola is hands down one of my favorite Fmcs. Shes got that fierce, morally grey, take no trouble type of personality that I absolutely adore! I thought the friendships in this story were written beautifully, especially the friendship between Viola and Tulip. It’s also got a nice bit of spice mixed in as well. I can’t wait to find out what’s gonna happen in the next book.

So we carry on from book one and it’s such a great continuation. Book two in the Shadowweaver trilogy draws us back in and holds on tight as our exciting and thrilling journey continues. Our characters are growing and developing and i just love Viola, flaws and all. There’s an incredible slow burn romance, complex friendships, enthralling and captivating storyline brimming with magic and twists and turns to keep you hooked and on the edge of your seat. I am definitely looking forward to the next book!

I was so excited to get this as an ARC!

I really enjoyed how different this book was to other fantasy books. I give it a 4.5. I struggled to like a lot of the characters throughout the book (which I think was the point), but I’m glad I continued reading. There is great continuation of the story, starting immediately where the first book ends. I really enjoyed the magic system and the world building. I will absolutely be reading the 3rd book of the series when it comes out later this year.

This book.. man it was something.. the journey of this group was full of surprises, all the emotions, some moments when you just wanted to yell at them to get their stuff together! A bit more dark than the Last Winter, but overall a must read book. Just when you think you know where the book could go/end… Holly said nope, just kidding! Cannot wait for the third and final book in the trilogy to see what else happens!!

Viola and her band are finally facing their fate while working to weave magic to bring back the Gods. To do this they must fight the evil God Himureal and Zeph to be free. The drama, action, and intrigue explode off the pages, to create an intriguing story. The battle is not over, it just got more intense. The next installment is eagerly anticipated.

This is the second book in a trilogy, and after reading the first book my expectations were very high.

It is quite the stunt to be able to write an even better second book.

I loved the details of the very well-written sexual scenes - I like my books spicy!

The only "problem" with this book is that it was not the last installment of the trilogy and I have to wait for the final one.

I’m really struggling to finish this. The storyline feels so similar to a series I’ve read before—a girl who has no idea she’s a fae, yet holds incredible power. Both stories are full of adventures, searching for something, and even sharing that eerie connection with “someone” in the darkness. I can’t help but think… if I’d read this one first, maybe I would’ve felt differently and given it a higher rating.
