Rylan Jeffers has silent and dangerous down to an art form, even though it’s just a ruse to keep him away from people and protect his big, soft heart.
Then nightclub owner Kris Hillyard turns up in hospital, badly beaten, and Rylan can’t stay away, even as Kris and his entourage turn his life upside down.
Rylan can handle the danger that comes with protecting Kris. He can even handle Kris’s particular brand of stubborn. But can he drop his shield and find the courage to ask Kris to stay?
Jackie Keswick writes a mix of suspense, action adventure, fantasy and magical realism. She loves stories with layers, plots with twists and characters with hidden depths. She adores friends to lovers stories, tales of unexpected reunions and second chances, and men who write their own rules. She blogs about English history and food, has a thing for green eyes, and is a great believer in making up soundtracks for everything, including her characters and the cat.
- Bodyguard/Club Owner - Shady Parent - MM Romance
The prequel to this series "A Knight To Remember" introduced the guys of the White Knight Security group. I was intrigued to see how they all settled down and found love. In this second installment we get Rylan, who has been at the Rebel Retreat and noticed a man he can't keep his eyes off of, Kris. Rylan gets a call from Grant that Kris is in the hospital and has been torture beaten. Rylan takes the case on to protect Kris even though Kris is being quiet about who hurt him and why. Kris is stubborn and not used to asking for help, he is usually the one who helps everyone else so having Rylan and the White Knights get involved is making him feel great guilt. These two are drawn to each others sweetness and comfort pretty quickly. Rylan is a freaking teddy bear and making sure that Kris had all the foods and tea he liked in the mews and his own home. There is property damage, car chases, and a showdown involved in this action packed novella. Up next is Luca to get his new assignment that leads to love.
The trope was similar to Grant as in, big strong ex-military guy is hired to protect a client then falls for said client with minor differences. In this one Rylan actually knows and has a thing for Kris before he sets out to protect him. It wasn't as insta-love/lust as in Grant so I'd call this one an almost slow burn or as slow a burn as it can be in less than 100 pages. Also, the drama in this one wasn't as suspenseful in my opinion but it worked okay.
● Contemporary ● Fast easy read ● Ex military Bodyguard/Club owner client pairing ● Drama ● Instant attraction but also an almost slow burn (if that makes sense) ● Some sweet moments ● There are some kitties to soften the story LOL ● Really liked the MCS... Rylan & Kris ● Characters from previous book make an appearance ● Chosen family ● A not surprising conclusion to the drama ● A satisfying enough ending ● Under 100 pages ● NOT a stand-alone
Another lovely story in Jackie Keswick's White Knight Security series.
Rylan is the gentle giant of the four business partners in the team and his calm presence is a great contrast to Kris Hillyard's nervy energy when the nightclub owner is badly beaten up and approaches the security team for help.
There are hints that both men have had a difficult upbringing and struggle with trust issues which is one of the reasons that Rylan hasn't approached Kris before, although they both volunteer at the same shelter for teenagers.
I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot and the growing bond between these two wonderful men, helped by Kris' larger-than-life cats as part of the supporting cast.
Great found family group of guys that band together to open a security company and proceed to find their special someone’s as clients need help. These guys are protective and adorable as they help resolve some issues and deal with the bad guys. This one has Rylan, his crush, and lots of cats.
Enjoyed reading the second book of the series, am impatiently waiting for the next one. Rylan had been drawn to Kris while working in a retreat for kids that needed help. When Kris was hurt, Rylan was there to help protect him. Good storyline and great characters. Recommend reading.
Not much of a story. The fact that it took me over a half of a day to read such a short book tells you it was boring. It read like a Hallmark movie meaning it was unrealistic and way too predictable. I'm not sure if I'll read anymore in this series. Just not my style of writing.
Another wonderful story with White Knight Security team. Rylan and Kris were so good together and I was thrilled that Kris's horrible father got what he deserved. And who could resist the cats!!!
As Grant Keeping and Dr. Spencer Corel are getting cozy at the hospital. The conversation leads to one of Spencer’s patients. He asks Grant to go with him while he checks on the patient.
Spencer knows of Kris Hillyard, the owner of Gloss a nightclub in High Wycombe. He arrived at the hospital unconscious. Grant jumps on it and immediately calls Rylan one of the co-owners of White Knight Security.
Besides the teasing, Rylan Jeffers is hot to jump on the situation and heads for the hospital. He’s had his eye on Kris Hillyard for sometime now. He knows of Kris from volunteering at the Rebel Retreat halfway house, teaching business skills and money management. While he helps handle finances with his friends at the White Knight Security, Rylan also gives instructions at Rebel Retreat. He joined the Rebel Retreat to do something constructive and teach his skills to the teens and also did background checks on backers and supporters. He got immersed in watching Kris’s style of sharing and giving his attention to the teens.
Kris is ready to leave the hospital, but he can barely stand up. It’s really important that he get’s home. Ready to fall over he’s caught by some strong hands. As Rylan has been instructed by Spencer, not to let Kris leave the hospital, he comes up with a plan. When they enter Kris’ apartment, Rylan can see what he's worried about. Three furry babies: Night, Shade and an old Tom.
Kris claims he was mugged but Rylan knows there’s more to it than that. He’s already planned to have Kris in a safe house at Knightdale Court. First they have to get there in one piece as they’re being followed. Given their followers the slip, they head to the retreat where they get help from some of the older teens: Damien and Mallory.
Kris has always taken care of himself from the age of fifteen. He lived on the streets and never took handouts or government subsidies. He didn’t trust anyone but a kitten he found that became his long time companion.
Kris doesn’t like that now he’s gotten the kids and the retreat involved. But Rylan isn’t ready to give up on Kris. He’s going to get to the bottom of what’s really going on. He’ll have help too, as the White Knights and an unlikely insurance investigator will spring into action.
I call “White Knight Security” a mini-series, as I don’t know what Jackie Keswick has planned for it’s future. So far, it’s the story of four men who come together after serving in the military and begin a security company. Grant was our first story and now we have Rylan. Rylan seems a little more low-keyed and he meshes well with Kris. Kris is a little more excitable and doesn’t want to be a burden on anyone. I like how the author took Tom and made him a support cat for Kris. Whenever there was any occurrence where Kris was unbalanced, he always reached for Tom. “Rylan” has a nice group of characters to go along with Rylan and Kris. There’s the teenagers from the retreat: Damien, Mallory and Keefe; and the insurance investigator, Drake Norton. Of course, there’s the best: Fritz, Luca, Grant and Spencer.
I highly suggest “Rylan” and “Grant” if you haven’t read them yet. The stories are quick reads, but the author does well focusing on the characters. She also knows how to bring the danger, suspense and some very feel good moments. I’m ready for the next book “Luca” coming soon.
