“Sparkles with warmth, wit, and a sweet helping of holiday charm! The perfect stocking stuffer for readers who crave all the holiday feels and a happy ending!” —Rachel Linden, bestselling author of The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, this joyful Christmas romp tells the story of a woman who can’t stop trying to help everyone around her find their happily-ever-after—even when her help leads to disaster.

Frankie Lane knows what’s best for just about everyone but herself. Her divorced sister, Stef, who is too young to give up on love; her shy employee, Elinor; and her daughter, Natalie, who works in Frankie’s shop, Holiday Happiness, and really needs to start her own business selling the delectable chocolates she makes at home; even her best friend, Viola, who is trying to renovate her old Victorian. Frankie knows she could help all of them, if they’d just let her—and if all of her help didn’t end in utter disaster.

Then there’s Mitch Howard, the owner of the local hardware store. They’ve been friends ever since Frankie opened her store, nine years earlier. He got her through the nightmare when she lost her husband in a freak accident, and he’s her favorite shoulder to cry on. He’s been divorced for years, and it’s such a waste of man! Mitch is the fittest, finest man Frankie knows. He’s easygoing, wise and kindhearted. Mitch needs someone. And she’s determined to help him find that someone—whether he likes it or not.

2.5 "meh" stars, rounded up cuz it's a holiday book. Never read this author before, but the marketing described this as "Austen's Emma at during Christmas" or something, which was just total 💩 This story did not feature a sweet, but "clueless" young women who lives with her doting Dad & has a hunky guy under her nose, NOPE, this was about a widow in her 50's who's got a mom, daughter & sis she'd like to fix up with various townsfolk, so "Matchmaking" was the whole similarity???🤷🏻‍♀️ And it was SO predictable & boring AF!!! I guess it would play to Hallmark holiday rom-com set, so that's who it should have been pitched to. Big fail for me

The Merry Matchmakers by Sheila Roberts
Contemporary holiday romance.
Frankie leaned into motherhood with a vengeance. She loves telling people what to do. If she sees somebody in need, she’s going to have a solution. She knows. Even though her two children are now adults Frankie can’t help being involved in their lives. Her friends are not beyond her machinations. She wants the best for everyone.

🎧 I listen to an audiobook narrated by Ann Marie Gideon. The narration performance was a wonderful. It sounded like a full cast. Even though it was only one person, the performance sounded awesome. One thing to note, is there is a full cast in this story. Frankie’s spouse, Frankie’s mother, Frankie‘s children, their spouses and kids. It’s a lot of people to keep track of. I enjoyed the audiobook, but this may have been a better book to read in a print format for the many names.

Inspired by Emma by Janet Austen, this novel is both joyful and too much interference, though Frankie means well. Of course, it all comes together and resolves exactly as you hope. It’s the holidays and nothing else is acceptable.

An adorable Christmas romance!! Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Shelia Roberts is so talented and I always love her books. All the holiday Happy feels. I enjoyed these characters. This is about Frankie who is always trying to set up her friends and family. She has the best of intentions and I found that so cute. She owns a holiday themed store in her small town. She always wants to make people happy. There are many characters in this one. I enjoyed getting different points of views. A heartwarming and cozy Christmas read that I highly recommend you picking up this holiday season.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Have you ever had someone try to set you up on a date?⁣

A matchmaker perhaps? A coworker? A meddling auntie?⁣

The Merry Matchmaker was inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma and tells the story of a woman who can’t stop trying to help everyone around her find their happily-ever-after, even when her help leads to disaster.⁣

Frankie can’t help herself. Even though she owns a busy and successful holiday themed store and the season is ramping up - she still manages to somehow find the time to meddle in just about everyone’s life around her. She seems to think she knows what’s best for everyone else… except herself.⁣

I absolutely loved Frankie. It’s fun and refreshing when a meddlesome family member is all heart and truly does want to genuinely help everyone. And even though it always blows up in her face, you love her even more for trying. And you just wish she’d step back and realize that trying to fill others with what she hopes is love and joy, is just masking what she’s missing in her own life. With a rich cast of sweet and relatable characters, and a charming town called, what else - but Carol… this holiday is sure to be a happy + heartwarming one, if you add this to your holiday reading list!⁣

The Merry Matchmaker was my first Sheila Roberts novel, and while it won’t be my last, I did have mixed feelings about it. Overall, it’s an enjoyable read—not one I’d rush to recommend, but not a waste of time either. Thank you to HTP for the gifted copy.

One of the best things about this book is the ensemble cast. I’m a big fan of stories with multiple characters you can really get to know, and this one delivers in that sense. However, I often felt like I’d been dropped into the middle of a plot line without enough context. Past events and relationships were referenced as if the reader already knew them. I even checked to see if this was part of a series (it’s not, as far as I can tell). While I don’t want heavy exposition, I do appreciate some groundwork to establish how everyone fits together.

I also loved that the book features a more mature heroine—so refreshing compared to the abundance of romcoms centered on 24-year-olds. That said, at times our heroine FELT like a 24-year-old. Her penchant for meddling, for example, was frustrating to read and relate to.

Speaking of meddling, I picked this up because it’s billed as an Emma retelling (IYKYK… but that’s only partially true. One plotline has shades of Emma, but with the ensemble cast, the story ventures far afield.

Despite these critiques, I did enjoy the book overall. The foundation is solid—on paper, it has everything I’d want in a Christmas romcom—but the execution didn’t meet my expectations. I’ll definitely give Sheila Roberts another try. If you have a favorite by her, let me know so I can start there!

This book was irritating at best and shouldn’t be marketed as an adaptation of Emma. The main character is 50 and the love interest is 58 (which is fine but not at all what I was expecting??), the whole thing was far too long and I found all of the characters annoying by the end lol. Also, weird fat shaming and religious undertones throughout???

Sheila Roberts has a new Christmas book out, and you'll definitely want to add it to your holiday TBR! I've read quite a few of her books, and she never disappoints!

Frankie Lane owns a holiday store in a small town. She thinks she knows what's best for everyone, so she meddles in their business. Her sister Stef, daughter Natalie, her employee Elinor, and even her long-time friend Mitch. She wants everyone around her to be happy and never thinks of her own happiness. She knows no one can replace her late husband. She really does have the best intentions, but sometimes it's just too much. When one of her "projects" doesn't go the way she wants it to, she comes to the realization that maybe she needs to think of herself from time to time.

Inspired by Jane Austen's classic Emma, this was an enjoyable read. It's told in multiple POV, and I loved the charming small town atomsphere during the holidays. All the drama from Frankie's meddling was very entertaining. I especially loved it when she had her epiphany. It's one of those books where you know what's going to happen, but the journey to get there is the fun. This was a heartwarming, cozy holiday read, and I would definitely recommend it.

2.5 stars...this one really didn't work for me. There was potential and I would say there were a handful of cure moments...but I really struggled to get into this one. The writing style didn't work well for me...I never felt like I was pulled into the story fully. I also think with 3 main romances/storylines going...none of them got the kind of depth to them that I wanted. This could have been 3 books with each book following one couple...but instead it's all crammed into this one and I never really felt anything for the characters. I also really didn't like Frankie...something about her meddling felt off to me...probably because there wasn't that depth to make her feel well rounded. This wasn't for me but I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it if it sounds like something you'd be into.

The Merry Matchmaker is now my third time reading Sheila Roberts not to mention seeing the Hallmark movie version of The Nine Lives of Christmas (adorable). I love Roberts’ writing and I haven’t read a book of hers I haven’t liked, but this one wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be. I found myself getting rather annoyed with Frankie and her constant need to set up people around her instead of looking internally to fix her own issues. I have never read Emma so I have no idea how it compares to this book, but I have to hope Emma is better in that regard. Minus that, I thought this had lots of funny moments and I loved the Christmastime setting.

The Merry Matchmaker is at times quite dramatic, and I thought this was perfectly captured on the audiobook thanks to the narration of Ann Marie Gideon. I would have liked more narrators since Frankie isn’t the only viewpoint, but Gideon did a great job on her own despite not doing anything to differentiate her voice between characters. As with any book that reads like a Hallmark movie, you can feel that HEA coming, and the touching ending really made the entire story for me. Read this if you enjoy Hallmark holiday rom-coms, older main characters (Frankie is in her 50s and a widow), and small-town charm.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Merry Matchmaker is inspired by Jane Austin's Emma and is a fun Christmas romance. Frankie Lane is a fixer and thinks she knows what is best for everyone else. First she tries to match her divorced sister, Stef, with the new man in town, then she makes her shy employee, Elinor over to match her with one of their customers, and is constantly trying to convince her mom to remarry. She runs Holiday Happiness, a shop where she works with her mother and daughter. She is widowed and has a best friend, Mitch, who she spends a lot of time with. When Elinor's makeover has her falling for Mitch and spending time with him, Frankie suddenly has feelings of jealousy?

This was a fun festive story. Frankie has passed on chairing the Christmas festival this year so she can devote her time to matchmaking. She is quite the woman, one who thinks she knows what is best for everyone, but can't see what is best for herself. I really liked Mitch, he was her BFF, but it was obvious to this reader that he was just biding his time. The Christmas festivities were fun, and I loved the contests to choose Mrs. Claus. There were times that I got frustrated with Frankie, but it all worked out eventually. The characters were all wonderful and played various parts in the story. I always enjoy Sheila Roberts stories. Her writing is wonderful and I always enjoy her sweet, clean romances. Throw in Christmas festivities and family relationships and you have a wonderful Christmas romance.

I really wanted to love The Merry Matchmaker, especially since I’m an Austin fan and was drawn to the idea of an older protagonist, which I thought would be refreshing. Unfortunately, this ended up being a DNF for me. The biggest issue was the horrible formatting—one long, unreadable block of text with no chapters or proper paragraph breaks, which made it nearly impossible to follow. I didn’t get any of the Emma vibes I was hoping for, and Frankie, the main character, didn’t do much for me either. I was expecting quirky matchmaking fun and holiday charm, but instead, I just felt bored and frustrated. This one wasn’t for me. I wanted a feel good holiday rom-com and this book was not it. Thanks to Frankie!! She was bossy, overbearing and snarky, and not in a good way. They keep saying how she is so beloved and thoughtful but I just didn't see it. Her character never really developed she continued to "know best" even when pissing people off left and right. And the author gave her the "happy ending" for everything she meddled in. I call foul!!

PS I'm the same age as her and her thoughts on aging were just plain old depressing and part of what made her such a miserable character.

I absolutely adore this cover but that is, unfortunately, where my love affair ended. The description had so much potential - a woman who wants to help everyone around her find love - but the main female character, Frankie, who is in her 50s, was insufferable. One of the male characters couldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer (yeah, no thanks), and another was a complete jerk but somehow he’s the perfect man for her sister. I know teenagers with more maturity than some of these characters. A total miss for me.

It was a cute book for Christmas and kinda different as the characters are all older as opposed to like 20 something year olds. But, there were so many characters and storylines it was hard to keep track sometimes.

A feel good, age-gap, small town holiday romance that was good on audio but not a super standout read for me. Grab some coco, your big fuzzy socks, and prop yourself up next to the fireplace because this book is sure to charm you with some small-town holiday escapism.

I can see the Jane Austen in this book, with all of Frankie’s meddling. Always from a kind place, but she’s obviously avoiding her own feelings and life. While that annoyed me, I couldn’t help but fall for all the charm in this book.

The town, the characters, the Christmas vibes and how everyone in the town gets into the holiday spirit. The budding romances, and the adorable way everything came together for a happy ending. It melted my little holiday heart 💝

This was such a fun Christmas read! I loved this reimagining of Jane Austen’s Emma and it really put me in the holiday mood! I especially loved the second chance at love aspect of the story.

I loved the cast of characters in the holiday tale, even though I didn’t relate to them as much as I had hoped with them all being in a different stage of their lives than me.

Full of holiday charm and cozy Christmas vibes this is the perfect read to cuddle up with in front of a fire. I recommend picking this one up when you are ready to get into the holiday spirit.

this was just.. fine. this is something I never thought of or maybe noticed before, but this had like white people jokes? like jokes white people would find funny lol and I just don't care for it. the writing was also poorly written in the sense it was very telling and not showing. everything was overly explained and spelled out in terms of people's relationships or personality traits. nothing bad about this but I wish it had more charm that the original Emma holds.

A Merry Matchmaker provides an entertaining and festive read for cozy winter nights by a crackling fire.

Have you ever been set up on a date?

In a nod to Emma (Jane Austen), A Merry Matchmaker is the story of middle-aged Frankie and her persistent matchmaking schemes. Christmas takes center stage as we witness Frankie’s latest and greatest matchmaking endeavors. How will her favorite handsome hardware store owner, Mitch Howard, avoid her recent scheme and how might he gain her attention? Is the incurable matchmaker about to find her own match?

All the fun of a rom-com with a few mature characters! It’s fun when older characters find unexpected romance in mid-life.

Fans of a festive Christmas setting will find lots to love here from a Mrs. Clause contest to gingerbread houses to a Santa Walk to all the decorations. A few recipes are included!

Sheila Roberts brings wit and entertainment in this nicely paced story. Frankie is meddlesome but loveable, and even though her matchmaking doesn’t always go according to plan, we love her for trying.

If you are a Sheila Roberts fan, you won’t want to miss this new release. Known for warm-hearted women’s fiction with sweet (closed door) romance and no profanity, A Merry Matchmaker might be the festive, light read you are looking for this winter…a delightful escape from the stress of the holiday season.

Thanks #NetGalley @HarlequinBooks #MiraEditors for a complimentary e ARC of #AMerryMatchmaker upon my request. All opinions are my own.
