Ruby’s Heart Song is a delightful story about a singing penguin who discovers the melody of her heart. Ruby worries that she doesn’t have what it takes to sing in the talent show. When Ruby sings in front of other penguins, her body feels all jumbly wumbly and her heart beats louder than a drum. But after sharing her heart strings with her best friend Pengwee, Ruby’s unbridled heart delivers a show stopping tune. This beautifully illustrated book contains themes of mindfulness, self-awareness and heartfelt inspiration.
Ruby’s Heart Song is the second book in the Pengwee & Ruby picture book series. Each book provides engaging stories involving two adorable and best friend penguins with embedded lessons of mindfulness and social-emotional learning.
A musical rendition of the signature song in Ruby’s Heart Song, also by the same name, can be found worldwide on all music platforms including You Tube, Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. The song is a collaboration between Debbie Nutley (lyrics) and Wells Hanley (music).
Wonderful book about the magic of overcoming fears and finding your voice. It also comes with a corresponding song 😃 which was such a nice touch!
It follows Ruby, a cute penguin who is set to sing at the upcoming talent show. She’s both nervous and excited (“nexcited”), and talks with her friend Pengwee about her unique way of dealing with the jitters … by doing a “Jiggly Wiggly” dance.
However she still worries that her heart will beat too loudly on stage. Up there she’ll be the center of attention and every Penguin on the glacier will be watching.
Ruby’s friend, Pengwee, encourages her to focus on the music that comes from her heart, echoing the advice Ruby’s mom gave her about music being an expression of the heart’s true feelings.
At the Talent Show, Ruby begins to sing “Ruby’s Heart Song.” Despite a moment of doubt where her voice falters, she finds strength in her connection with Pengwee and the audience, leading to a joyful and uplifting performance that inspires everyone to join in her “Jiggly Wiggly” dance.
The students were already familiar with Pengwee the Penguin. So I figured first we should re-read “Pengwee’s Breath”, to help them make the connection. So we read the two books back to back and the kids had a great time 🥰 the writing is great and the creative language had them laughing almost immediately. After we read it, I played the song for the kids and we had an impromptu dance party 🥳
It’s great to see another book expanding on this “Penguin universe”. The Author, Debbie Nutley has created some seriously cute characters and we can’t wait to see these penguins again in future books.
The song is the last slide in this post or can be found on YouTube (search: Ruby’s Heart Song feat Lisa Viggiano)
A beautiful story of emotions and courage. Ruby the penguin is feeling nexcited - nervous and excited at the same time. She tries to explain to her friend Pengwee how her heart feels when she feels different emotions. These emotions make her feel all jumbly wumbly inside. Can Ruby unwobble her worried heart when she sings at the talent show? Read this lovely illustrated and well written book to see how Ruby overcomes her fear and sings her heart out to all the penguins.
I recommend this book to any parent or teacher who wants to help someone young put a voice to internal anxiety. The writing and the illustrations are beautiful.
